The Musings of Pastor Jimmy

Hello Friends,

As you are reading this we are about to dive into the summer months. As a Kid I had a love/hate relationship with summer vacation. On the one hand I loved going on vacation, hanging out with my friends, VBS, and just taking it easy at times. On the other hand, it broke my routine that I had gotten used to during the school year. I was one of those weird kids what was for year-round school. I was happy with the idea of go to school a few weeks then take a break. The point is as I psychoanalyze myself I find that I didn’t like stepping away from my comfort zone.

Jesus addressed this in many times in the Gospels when he told the disciples in Matthew 16:24 to deny themselves and follow him. Jesus is saying “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?” (The Message)

Jesus is telling us that no matter what we face in our lives especially the things that make us uncomfortable or scared, He will be with us always. Even as an adult I have to be reminded of this as the world can be a scary place. May we always take a deep breath as we face the uncertain and remember that we are not walking alone.

Keep Loving One Another!

HENRY FORK SERVICE CENTER NEWSLETTERLISA’S LINES—In whom do you believe?

2018 is proving to be a time of uncertainty: the stock market is up and down, school shootings con-tinue, there is violence in the world and in our communities. How do we as Christians live in a world filled with uncertainty?

The certainty for me is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through the resurrection, Christ defeated death and rose to live again. The certainty of my life ultimately is that I will live with Jesus, both in this world

and after death. That knowledge allows me to live life to the fullest, to share that good news with others, and to deepen my relationship with God.

Willie James Jennings, writing in the 2018 Upper Room Disciplines, states, “First we rise to the day giving thanks to the Lord… Second, we speak to ourselves of what the Lord has done for us and for others. We live

always in the testimonies to God’s goodness, and we remember those testimonies of God’s redeem-ing action.” I also find comfort and strength in the hymn, I Know whom I Have Believed. The verses tell of God’s

work in and through our lives, and the chorus says it all, “But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto him against that day.”

Because I know that Christ is able to handle everything the world throws at me and I throw at the world, I can live in God’s love and grace for me and for all. God’s love then calls us to respond and to be in ministry to the

community and world around us. As we respond to God’s love, we feed the hungry, care for the sick and those in prison, and share God’s love with the children, youth, and adults in our community.

Henry Fork Service Center continues to share God’s love with children and youth, with over 60 stu-dents in the Afterschool program. As we share the Easter story, and prepare to share with our families at the Easter

celebration, our students are learning about the crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Our younger stu-dents are preparing to sing Halle, Halle, Hallelujah and our older elementary students are learning “Lord, I Lift your Name

on High.” The Middle School students are preparing a mime to “The Stand,” and exploring what it means to them to stand up for others.

Thank you for your ongoing support for the Henry Fork Service Center. As we share the good news of Easter and God’s love for us, you make that sharing possible. Through your gifts of cleaning supplies, pa-per

supplies, school and craft supplies, we have what we need for our student to participate in many differ-ent activities. Your financial gifts paid off the mortgage, and keep the program and campus up and running. Thank

you for giving to Henry Fork Center in so many different ways!

NEEDED: SUMMER CAMPERSHIPS Henry Fork Service Center is seeking camperships for our students for the summer pro-gram. The purpose of

Camperships is twofold:

1)Provide scholarships for students to attend overnight camp at either Children’s Bible Camp at Indian Cave Camp, Phoebe Needles, or other overnight camp. Henry Fork Center usually pays 1/2 the cost of camp and

the parents of our students pay the other half.

2) Enable students to participate in enrichment activities outside the HFSC campus. Activi-ties include canoeing at Fairystone State Park, paddle boarding and tubing at Franklin County Parks, monthly field trips

and end of the year trips to area attractions and Washington DC.Your campership of $50 will ensure that our students have experiences of lifetimes away from the HFSC

campus. You can make your gift in honor or memory of a friend or family member, and know that an HFSC student will reap the benefits. Thank you for your support of our summer program.
