Hello my fellow RDAs,
My name is Karly Edwards and I have had the pleasure of sitting on the council since 2015, first as a director, then as President Elect and finally, today, I intro-duce myself as the 35th President of the Saskatchewan Dental Assistants Associ-ation. My first task is to thank outgoing President, Jillian Nault for her outstanding term as President. Jill was a splendid ambassador for the Association, nothing more or less could have been expected of her. She can and no doubt will, look back on her term with great pride and satisfac-
tion of a job well done. Thank you, Jill.
I am passionate not only about dental assisting, but dentistry as a whole, and hope you all feel the same. I implore you, not to be shy about getting involved, there are so many ways to fuel your passion whether through volunteering with the Dental Day in Regina and Saskatoon, mentoring a Dental Assisting student from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, speaking up at our member forum, or just simply being an ambassador for the profession at your
office.
We held our AGM at The Travelodge in Saskatoon on April 21th. I’m pleased to report that it was well attended. Gillian Isabelle, an RDA from Regina has been named President Elect and Melissa Blow was appointed to the council as a direc-tor. We are extremely happy to have you both on board. With these new appoint-ments, I am happy to note that we are a

the members that are due in 2018.
Non Practice member who are upgrading to practice status must also ensure
that they have a valid certificate.
WHEN SUBMITTING YOUR CERTIFICATE PLEASE ADVISE THE NUMBER
OF HOURS OF TRAINING AS PD CREDITS WILL ALSO BE AWARDED.
• 25 Year Service Awards recognizing 25 years of licensure
• The Penny Waite Award was presented to Nina Lobb, RDA
• Honorary Membership was presented to Leslie Topola,
SDT
We also held an anniversary luncheon after the AGM, where we, the Saskatchewan Dental Assistants Association celebrat-ed 60 years. There was a wonderful slide show put together by our Executive Director, Susan Anholt , as well as a reflection on the 60 years offered by past president Carla Effa. It was a nice trip down Dental Assisting memory lane. Thank you to Sinclair, Patterson and Henry Schein for the door prizes graciously do-
nated.
This council is one that I am incredibly proud of. Each member brings their own flare to the table and I know they will continue to be a forward-thinking council. If there are ever any ques-tions or comments for our council, please do not hesitate to get
in touch.
With that being said, I will mention the next event will be the SDAA/SDHA Seminar held at Evraz Place in Regina Septem-ber 28 & 29, 2018. You can register online through your mem-
ber portal. I hope to see you all there. Have a great summer!

Gillian Isabelle, Incoming President Elect
SDAA Officers for 2017—2018 The SDAA extends our most sincere thank you to Cara Breton
as she completes her term as Past President. Cara, along
with incoming Past President Jill and President Karly have
served as a forward thinking, action oriented leadership team.
We can all be very proud of their initiatives to expand the com-
petencies of the Saskatchewan dental assistant, to ensure that
post-graduate educational opportunities are available and to
provide oral health information and supplies to vulnerable pop-
ulations.

Honorary Membership to Leslie Topola, SDT
SDAA is honoured to announce that Leslie Topola is the 2018 recipient of
Honorary Membership in the SDAA.
Honorary Membership may be conferred upon any person who has distin-
guished themselves in the dental profession, the allied sciences, or any other
socially valuable activity and who has allied in promoting the welfare of the den-
tal assistant. Leslie’s career in dentistry has exceeded this criterion many times
over!
Leslie graduated as a dental therapist in 1974 and has dedicated her career to
improving the oral health of Saskatchewan residents. Leslie is a Saskatchewan
Dental Therapist. She graduated from Wascana Institute of Applied Arts & Sci-
ence in 1974, in the first class of “dental nurses”. Leslie worked as a dental
therapist in the Saskatchewan Health Dental Plan from 1974 to 1987. She be-
came a Dental Health Educator in 1987, and then accepted the position of Di-
rector of the Dental Health Education Program for Saskatchewan Health, man-
aging the provincial program until 1995. Leslie is currently the Manager of Oral
Health and Rural Public Health Nursing for the Saskatchewan Health Authority,
Saskatoon Area. In this capacity she has worked closely with the Ministry of
Health to implement preventive dental public health programming, focused on
health equity throughout Saskatchewan.
Leslie served as President of the Saskatchewan Dental Therapists’ Association from 2001-2005 and received an Honorary Lifetime
Member Award in 2006. She also served on the Saskatchewan Oral Health Professions Conference Committee from 2012 to 2016.
As a member of the Saskatchewan Oral Health Professions she has been an educator, mentor and an inspiration. In 2010 she envi-
sioned and founded the Saskatoon Oral Health Coalition which became the Saskatchewan Oral Health Coalition, and is currently the
Saskatchewan Oral Health Coalition Inc, a non-profit and soon to be charitable organization. The coalition is formed by a diverse
group of people who are dedicated to working together collaboratively to improve the oral health of vulnerable populations.
Leslie has worked tirelessly to improve the delivery of services for children in need of oral care in this province. She has spent years
helping to develop and implement protocol for residents living in long term care. Leslie has also championed all oral health profession-
als. She has ensured that each and every profession was given an equal seat at any table where Saskatchewan Oral Professions
have gathered. In search of one word to describe Leslie it would be to honor her with the word tenacity. Vocabulary .com defines
tenacity in this way. "Most people will tell you that tenacity is a great quality to have, especially if you're trying something challenging
that takes a while to complete. Odds are, the people you admire have shown real tenacity in achieving their goals. Anything really
worth doing takes persistence, perseverance, and stubborn determination. Tenacity is the quality displayed by someone who just
won't quit — who keeps trying until they reach their goal."
Leslie has encouraged, educated and mentored. Many of us have been inspired by Leslie to stand up and be counted as an equal
among the oral professions. It has been our good fortune to have Leslie in our court working on our behalf to improve the wages of
dental assistants working in government positions, endorsing the placement of dental assistants in positions of long term care oral
health coordinators and the hiring of dental assistants for oral health initiatives. Today we honor a woman who directed all of her
knowledge of oral health towards changing the status quo and for this she truly is a deserving and worthy recipient of this award.

Nina Lobb is 2018 Recipient of the Penny Waite Award SDAA is pleased to announce that Nina Lobb is the 2018 recipient of the
SDAA Penny Waite Achievement Award.
Nina was a member of the first graduating class of dental assistants from
Wascana Institute in 1976, now Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Professional-
ly, she has remained faithful to the profession of dental assisting and has
consistently upheld the ideals of being a responsible, reliable, tireless,
practicing Registered Dental Assistant who represents her profession in a
manner that is above and beyond the demands of employment.
Nina is passionate about infection prevention and control (IPC) standards
and issues and has been a strong leader in this regard in her capacity to
educate dental assisting students at Saskatchewan Polytechnic as well as
informing and updating co-workers. Nina has served on the committee of
oral health professionals who revised and communicated the Saskatche-
wan Oral Health Professions “Infection Prevention and Control Standards
in the Oral Health Care Facility” in our province in 2013. During 2017 and
2018 she has again contributed her invaluable time and expertise by repre-
senting SDAA on the committee tasked with the review of the IPC document. Her contribution along with that of other
committee members will serve to protect the public of Saskatchewan and will be of benefit to the entire oral health profes-
sion.
Nina has served the National Dental Assisting Examining Board through the Clinical Practice Evaluation process since the
implementation of the CPE in 2001. She is a Session Facilitator and also take on the roles of Evaluator and Clinic Coordi-
nator when needed. Nina was a member on the CPE Development Committee for 6 years, as her last term concluded in
December 2017. In this capacity she has given of her time and expertise to ensure that dental assistants are qualified to
hold a license and are able to practice dental assisting in Canada.
During 2017 Nina has also devoted many hours to the Canada - wide review process for the NDAEB written exam. This
process involved an exhaustive review of all test items contained in the test bank. Nina prepared and participated
throughout the review process; working collaboratively with other dental assisting reviewers to assess test items for im-
provement. This project was coordinated under the guidance of the University of Alberta professional testing services who
administers the development of written exam items, scoring and statistical analysis.
Nina’s commitment to the profession benefits all dental assisting professionals whether in educational and private practice
settings through her strong dedication to each of these vital projects, provincially and nationally.

Outstanding Essay Prize Presented to Samantha Siwy
In recent years, SDAA has offered a $500.00 prize to a dental assistant student at Saskatchewan Polytech-nic to a student that submits the most thought provok-ing essay. In 2018 respondents were asked to “Identify an at-risk population relative to oral health, and propose strategies to make positive changes”.
Council was pleased to present this years prize to Samantha Siwy. Highlights from her submission are
as follows:
“When asked to think about an at-risk population for oral health, the first group of people that come to my mind are the people living in northern and remote
communities.
...With many communities not having access to per-manent clinics, many people are forced to travel for dental care often driving long distances or having to fly to dental offices in the south. This issue is further compounded by cost and the age of the patient as travel out of remote locations requires a travel escort for those under the age of sixteen. In cases such as this, the cost of accessing dental care is doubled with travel costs. While many communities have part time clinics (only being open one week of the month), the types of dental care available is limited to generic care and does not include ma-
jor services such as dental surgeries.
…. By educating each community about the value of fluoride in their everyday life, we could prevent oral health issues. Fluoride is introduced in some cities’ water supplies which means that residents get treatment without even realizing it. Even though it is a small amount, it is sure to make a difference. Fluoride helps make the teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause dental caries. If used early enough, it could help repair the early stages of tooth decay before it can even be seen. Since there might not be a way to introduce fluoride into their main water source (or if the community simply
does not want it), we can introduce custom fluoride trays for each individual.
… The northern and remote communities require extra attention when it comes to oral health since they do not have all the resources that many others have access to in larger communities off reserve. Due to the remote location and limited access to a wide range of health services, northern and remote communities continue to be at-risk of serious dental is-sues. The fact that they need to travel for dental care, medical appointments or even just grocery shopping makes them at risk. I believe the pricing of foods also has an impact on their diets which could lead to a greater risk of oral health condi-tions considering the healthier food options are too expensive for any of them to even afford. For example, access to fresh fruits and vegetables is limited in many northern and remote communities where fruit such as raspberries can cost up to
twelve dollars for a pint and a four-litre container of milk can sell for twenty-five dollars.
President Karly Edwards presents portfolio, certificate and cheque to
Samantha Siwy in recognition of her prize winning essay
SDAA Awards
Page 12 Accent on Assisting
Marble coasters are awarded to Registered Dental Assistants with 25 years of licensure. Marble is a limestone that comes from old sea beds that have been crystallized by heat and pressure. This is why you may find fos-sils of sea life in the stone. The color differ-ences are due to varying chemicals that are in the sea beds where the marble is formed. The veining in this stone is present when the mud bed or limestone is changing from heat and pressure which causes the components
to be squeezed out.
Marble resembles life, and is particularly ap-propriate to commemorate twenty-five years of service in the oral health care profession. We are no longer shiny and new but are
molded by the influences in our lives.
We congratulate our members having achieved this milestone, offering twenty-five years of service to the oral health care of the
Saskatchewan public.

Dental Day 2018 was a great success under the direction of Dean Lefebvre, RH and Robin McKay Ganshorn, RDA. There was a great turnout of clients,
particularly new Canadians.
With translators on site, from Open Door Society as well as actual stu-dents, the language barriers were man-
aged.
SDAA staffed a booth promoting awareness on sugar and drinks and were able to hand out a great deal of
dietary information.
Congratulations to the oral health com-munity of Regina and the staff and stu-dents of Saskatchewan Polytechnic Dental Division for holding this amazing
event.

ber of individuals who are living with diabetes and
were able to discuss the importance of oral care
and regular visits to the hygienist.
Our drink display was a great hit and there were
a lot of people surprized about the amount of
sugar they, their children or grandchildren are
consuming.
We are all aware that diabetes affects everyone
and is on the rise, particularly in Saskatchewan.
Latest statistics estimate that 100,000 people in
Saskatchewan are diagnosed with diabetes –
representing approximately 8% of the population.
By 2020, that number is expected to reach
110,000 or close to 10% of the population. There
are a further 176,000 people living with prediabetes or undiagnosed dia-
betes.
Diabetes Canada is dedicated to support Canadians living with diabetes
to lead healthy lives, while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for
all Canadians in order to prevent these ominous and increasing preva-
lence rates.
With the help of our community partners such as SDAA , Diabetes Cana-
da can continue to spread the message of best practices in health man-
agement, especially for those living with diabetes.
Our next event will be the North Central
Health Fair August 22, 2018 in Regina, SK.
The booth will operate from 11am—2pm.
CAN YOU HELP? WE WILL NEED TO:
• Staff a booth and engage attendees.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:
• Thanks to members we now have an oral
care PowerPoint presentation for chil-
dren 7—12 and one created for adults.
• We need a presentation for 3—6 years
and a presentation on sugar and oral
health.
• We also need to identify members that
are available to offer presentations on
sugar, diabetes and other oral health re-
lated topics.
