FIRST NEWS “Helping people grow to love Jesus and each other.”
June, 2019
Dear FUMC Heath, The first week of June is the meeting of the North Texas Annual Conference, the governing body of our local United Methodist Church, and during that time I will officially be appointed for another year as the pastor at First Heath. My family and I are thankful and excited for the opportunity to serve here for a sixth year. And as I have mentioned before, with the blessing of our District Superintendent, Dr. Ron Henderson, and the blessing of our Church Board, my
family and I will be taking a six-week sabbatical this summer. Here’s some important information about this time: - I will be gone from June 10 - July 22 - I will not have access to email or texts. Our amazing staff will handle regular hospital and other
pastoral visits. The Rev. Joe Pool at FUMC Rockwall will cover any serious pastoral emergen-cies.
- If you need pastoral assistance from the staff please call or text Kerri Bergerhouse at 214-697-8014. If there is a pastoral emergency after hours you can contact Rev. Pool at 940-736-0808.
- Rev. Reid Fade, who was pastor First Heath’s pastor from 1999 - 2006, will preach the first three Sundays of my sabbatical (June 16, 23, & 30). Our own Lee Gilbert will preach on July 7, and our own David White will preach on July 14 & 21.
A sabbatical is not an extended vacation, but an opportunity to step into what Henri Nouwen called “creative withdrawal.” It is literally stepping into the reality that I am more than what I do, and that the congregation is more than the pastor or his sermons. Sabbath and sabbatical are mandated in Scripture, and my family and I are thankful for the blessing of this opportunity, and for all those willing to step in and serve where needed. Please pray for our whole family that this will be a time of healing and rest for our bodies, minds, and souls. Finally, I want to encourage every member of our church to be in worship on Sunday, June 9. This is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church (so wear read). It is also the last Sunday before my sabbatical and the first Sunday after Annual Conference. As you’re aware, our denomination is going through a painful separation, and we will take this special day in the life of the Church to pray for this painful season. As I write this today is Ascension Day… the day Jesus went to be enthroned at the right hand of God the Father before he sent us the Holy Spirit. No matter what is happening or what will happen, let us always hold on to the hope and confidence that Jesus is still on the throne. Amen and amen! Love and Peace in Christ, Pastor Omar

Your
General Fund/Operating Update:
January Beginning Cash Balance: $ 54,168
Year-to-Date Results for 2019:
General Fund Receipts: $ 114,035
General Operating Expenses: ($130,084)
Net Operating Results: $(16,049)
April Ending Cash Balance: $ 38,119
Dear Congregation,
Through April, our operating net results of a small deficit were in line with our budgeted results. We
were slightly lower by about $8,000 on receipts but have deferred some expenses also in the first
quarter. Our annual operating budget approved by the board has expenses of $410,000 for the
year. In addition to the general /operating fund, we continue to have significant dedicated account
funds. The interest from those funds currently held for investment or other dedicated purposes is
received into the general fund each month as part of the above shown receipts. We appreciate your
continued financial support of the monthly and annual operating needs of this Church.
We are currently recruiting members of the congregation to assist us with the weekly count as volun-
teer tellers. Normally, each teller might serve a couple of months during a calendar year to help
count the offerings after service. If you are interested in serving, please let Kerri know or discuss
with me.
Peace in Christ,
Brett Thames
