Starting October 1, remember to tag your extra garbage bagsHave an extra bag of garbage that won’t fit in your City black cart? Be sure to buy a garbage tag. The cost is $3 per tag.Where to buy tagsYou can purchase tags at participating convenience and grocery stores around Calgary or online. See the full list at calgary.ca/garbagetag

How to use garbage tags• Fill your black cart first.• Place your extra garbage in a bag and wrap a tag around the knot on top of the bag.• On collection day, set the bag 0.5 metres (2 feet) from your black cart.

Help reduce garbageWe encourage everyone to look at what they’re buying and throwing away to find ways to reduce waste. Sorting materials correctly helps maximize the use of all three carts (blue, green, black).

CECA TRAFFIC AND SAFETY REPORT

Please slow down, drive safely and watch out for each other!

COMMUNITY TRAFFICSchool is back is session! Or partially, due to the pandemic.Lots of work continues to be done to modify the traffic around the schools. You can help by having your children, if they are old enough and you feel comfortable, get to school on their own. This will help alleviate some of the traffic congestion around the schools. I believe Marshall Springs will be starting a program with “Ever Active” this year. If you drive, please be careful and watch out for kids. Do not park where the buses go. Also, arrive early to avoid congestion and do not stop in the middle of the road to let your kids out. September is the month the police will make the most rounds. There may be less traffic as school time may be modified as we adjust to the pandemic.

Speeding and Traffic CalmingSlow down! We are still having a problem with speeding in Evergreen as people shortcut through to 37th St. Be aware of this. We are continuing to work on traffic calm-ing to help with slowing traffic. I will be looking at what we can do to slow traffic at our playground zones.

ParkingIf you have a big truck and/or trailer, please be aware how close you park to corners and road bends. This can cause serious visibility problems for traffic. To report a traffic violation, if you think someone is parked too close or is causing a safety concern, or facing the wrong way, please contact 311 who can put you in touch with Cal-gary Parking Authority.

COMMUNITY SAFETYWatch out for each other! We are each other’s eyes! See something suspicious? Call the non-emergency number 403-266-1234 to re-port it.

Flex DeliveryDo you need to have stuff delivered but are worried about having it left on your doorstep? See about hav-ing Flex Delivery set up with Canada Post. You can then have your eBay, Amazon, Best Buy, or any other online purchase delivered right to the Evergreen post office. Check out www.canadapost.ca/flexdelivery. Don’t let the porch trolls get your package!

Unlocked doorsKeep your doors locked. Don’t be paranoid, but be vigi-lant. The CPS promotes the 9 pm lock down quite a bit. At 9 pm lock everything down before you go to bed. A good habit to get into.

Once again, if you witness any traffic issues on an ongoing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected] and also via the Traf-fic Service Request directly to the police. This can be done at http://www.calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Traffic/ Traffic-Service-Requests.aspx.

Please report road and sign issues to 311. This can be done by calling 311, or online at http://www.calgary.ca/CS/CSC/Pages/311.aspx or at the app website http://spot311.calgary.ca

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything I have written here, you can email me at [email protected].

Thanks,

Paul Bushell, Traffic Director

Normally, September is when excited youngsters hurry back to school to reconnect with friends and begin to plot new and exciting ways to avoid homework. But, we know that September 2020 will be different.

The coronavirus pandemic has been a part of our day-to-day lives for nearly six months and has changed our habits and routines. Albertans have done an admirable job listening to the advice from public health officials and have worked together to reduce the spread of COVID-19, protecting our most vulnerable and ensuring our healthcare system was not overwhelmed.

Alberta’s Education Minister, Adrianna LaGrange, has worked closely with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, as well as Alberta Health, school boards, and superintendents to develop Alberta’s back-to-school re-entry plan. We have acted with the best possible information and are committed to making sure that we make any adjustments we need to, so that we can keep kids safe.

The measures we are taking include: frequent cleaning of surfaces, introducing hand sanitizers to school and classroom entrances, grouping students in cohorts, and adjusting schedules to allow for greater physical dis-tancing. To prepare or to get more information, parents can go to alberta.ca/returntoschool.

And, while kids and teachers return to school, we know that folks still need to get back to work. That’s why we launched Alberta’s Recovery Plan. It’s a bold, ambitious plan to create more than 50,000 jobs and diversify our economy. We are building roads, bridges, schools, and other infrastructure Albertans rely on while making life better with investments that will allow our province to grow in the future.

Albertans came together at the outset of this pandemic to save lives. Now, while we move to gradually re-open our economy and our schools safely, we must continue to work together to make sure that Alberta continues to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

SAFE & SOUND

Back-to-School SafetyAlberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students about some road safety tips, as roadways become more congested, with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists both have an important role to play—road safety is a shared responsibility.

Motorists•Avoid talking on cell phones, texting, or any other be-

havior that diverts your attention away from driving;•Give right-of-way to pedestrians who have activated

overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street corner;•Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles—other than

those that are parked—in school zones or playground zones, during posted hours.

Around school buses•Flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to

stop—motorists should do likewise; •No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP,

when approaching a school bus with activated flash-ing red lights—unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you;•Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert

and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Pedestrians•Cross only at marked crosswalks, or street corners that

have clear visibility from all directions; •Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the

street, and keep distractions to a minimum;•When activating overhead crossing lights, pause be-

fore stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop;•Stay within the crosswalk lines;•Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the

street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop;•If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s

hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing; •Remember: children learn by observing. By dem-

onstrating safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

K To 12 School Re-EntriesGuidance and plans for students to start the 2020-21 school year.

Students across Alberta will return to class for the 2020/21 school year under Scenario 1: In-class learning with enhanced health and safety measures.

Effective August 4, school health measures include mandatory masks for Grade 4 to 12 students and staff where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

The school re-entry plan (2020-21 school year) allows schools and parents to prepare for learning while put-ting student and staff safety first.

The plan offers guidance on a wide range of operational issues including:•masks•hygieneandhealthrequirements•studentlearning•transportation•diplomaexams•mentalhealthandpsychologicalsupportsforstudents

and staff

Parents, students and school staff must review the self-screening questionnaire each day before going to a school building. Visitors must also use this question-naire to determine if they may enter a school.

For more info, including “The 2020/21 Parent Guide”, “Guidance documents” and the “Self-screening ques-tionnaire”, please follow this link: https://www.alberta.ca/k-to-12-school-re-entry-2020-21-school-year.aspx.

SECA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We are thinking of you and your families during this difficult time. Though the pandemic has been emo-tionally challenging, our sidewalks and pathways have been busier than ever before, and some of your gardens are looking especially nicely manicured. COVID-19 has caused SECA to take time off from programs, events, our 2020 membership drive, and even our communications, but we plan to re-set and come back strong.

We invite residents to join in our vision of creating a more neighbourly community. To take this vision from a good idea to reality takes volunteers. The contributions of our volunteers on our boards and committees helps to cre-ate a warm and friendly community where people feel connected and safe. We have a ways to go but that’s the type of community where I want to live. How about you?

You may have noticed an interruption in our communi-cations recently. It all comes down to too few people be-ing responsible for too many tasks. On their own these tasks are not onerous but when they pile up onto just a few individuals, it can be difficult to keep up.

Become a SECA volunteer! We have openings on the Board of Directors and on committees. Or, if you would prefer to volunteer for specific tasks, volunteers with basic social media skills, writing for our newsletters, use of Mailchimp, or website management, to name a few, would be warmly welcomed. We’re also looking for a person to help us to adopt G Suite for Non-profits which will make our volunteer work more efficient.

SECA’s Annual General Meeting will be online, Sep-tember 29, at 7:00 pm. We invite all residents to attend online to hear our reports and to join in the discussion. It’s your opportunity to provide feedback to the Board. We are recruiting for a variety of Board of Directors roles (Secretary, Vice President, Directors at Large). Please email [email protected] or call Lynn at 403-606-2406 to discuss how your skills and interests could fit. If you would like to attend the online AGM, please email at the above address to receive the login informa-tion. Watch for reports and agendas on our website and via our e-newsletters.

Membership revenue funds our operational costs, many of which did not stop when the pan-demic hit. Thanks to those who, despite the inter-

ruption in our events and programs, continued to support SECA by purchasing a membership. Please consider joining at Shawnee-evergreen.ca/ membership for $20 anytime. Your support is appreciated!

Progress has been achieved! Thanks to the action of SECA and engaged residents we have enjoyed some successes recently. (1) – The City has promised to take action to resolve the pre-COVID parking issues on 6 Street SW, though no signs have appeared yet. (2) – Our letter writing campaign resulted in a City Council zon-ing decision that means there will be no auto-oriented development (gas station) on the Graywood Develop-ments land at James McKevitt Drive and Shawnee Street. (3) – Many potholes were filled on Shawnee Drive. When we work together, we can make things happen!

SECA Plays is looking forward to reconnecting with families. Our Play Specialists are keen to start offering programs again with COVID precautions in place. We would like to hear from parents. Cardel Homes reminds SECA area residents that other than completed and opened areas, Shawnee Park remains an active, privately owned, construction site with all the hazards that entails.  For safety reasons, public access is strictly prohibited (including landscape buffer areas) and residents should observe all construction signage and respect the private property. For all development related inquiries please contact Brett O’Reilly, Project Manager, Cardel Homes at [email protected].

We can serve you best when we are connected! Receive our electronic newsletters by emailing [email protected], and like our Facebook page, @ShawneeEvergreenYYC. Our Board meetings are open, though we appreciate knowing if you plan to at-tend so that we can manage our agenda.

The Board of Directors is always interested in your feed-back, and we hope to see you at our AGM.
