A. Whimsy Bark Houses - Ken Armsbury (Omaha, NE)Students will carve a cottonwood bark whimsy house which can be hung or carved in the round. Anything goes: house, castle, lighthouse, low relief projects and bark handled knives will also be available. The instructor will cover all aspects of the carving process to complete the project. A letter will be sent to all registered students. Cost of class is $25 (plus cost of the bark @ $15 and up). Expereinced beginner to advanced. Class size 12

B. Wood Spirit Face - Bob Lawrence (Fargo, ND)Student will be carving a 12” wood spirit face out of basswood. Facial structure and anatomy will be stressed. Palm tools, knife and carving glove needed. Cost of the class will be $35 (Includes 1 blank & finishing materials) Experienced beginner to advanced. Class size 12. (OCC/Denny tools will be available for sale in Bob’s classroom.)

C. Female Face - Dick Skauge (Lake Park, MN)Students will carve a female face in basswood. The block is 9” long, 6” wide and 4” thick. We will use long handled tools and a mallet. Holding devises and bench hooks available. Some tools will be available to use. This is a large project with a lot of wood to remove. Student wil learn structure of face; carving the nose, eyes and mouth. Plan to carve Friday & Saturday evenings. Cost of class is $20. (Includes blank) Expereinced beginner to advanced. Class size12.

D. Basswood Santa Egghead - Rick Jensen (Crookston, MN) This project will be a Santa head, carved from a turned 3” X 4 ½” basswood egg. Students will need regular hand tools. Students will need to furnish their own paint brushes. All finishing materials, glues, paints, etc. will be furnished. Cost of class is $30. (Includes two blanks) Intermediate to advanced. E. Realistic Faces In Bark - Marty Dolphens (Pappillion, NE)Students will be carving realistic cottonwood bark faces. Santas, Mt. men, Native Americans or woodspirits. Learn the structure of the face and details of carving bark. Spray and wax will be furnished. Cost of class is $25 (plus cost of bark @ $5/pound) Experienced beginner to advanced. Class size 12.

F. Big Horn Ram Bust - Dave Sharp (Smithville, TN)Student will either powercarve or hand carve a Big Horn Ram bust from a basswood blank. Student will learn animal structure and proportions. Bring hand tools or powercarving tools, such as Fordom, Dremel or highspeed carvers and burrs. Students must bring dust collector if power carving. Will paint in class and start on a base, if time permits. Cost of class is $40. (Includes blank) Intermediate to advanced. Class size 12. (Dave will have burrs for sale in the class.)

G. 13” Butternut Crappie - Perry Johs (Blaine, MN)The project will be a 13” crappie made of butternut wood. You will apply a clear natural finish that will bring out the natural wood grain that butternut possesses. No fish scales will be carved. By the end of the weekend, you should be ready for the final sanding, applying the finish, glueing the eyes and mounting the fish. I’ll have drawing copies of a 17” walleye with me, for those of you that are interested. Cost of class is $30 (Includes blank, eyes, brass mounting rod, fin material, abrasive material and finish) Beginner to advanced. Class size 12.

H. Dove of Peace Relief - Rick Brereton (Lac Du Bonnet, MB)Students will carve an elegant stylized pierced relief of a “dove of peace” from a rounded 10” X 1” basswood pane (band sawed & pierced). The focus of the carving will be relief carving techniques and use of templates. Various finishes will be discussed. Students will need to contact Rick for specific tools and carving accessories that are needed at [email protected], (204-345-6020) Cost of class $40 (Includes blank) Experienced beginner to advanced. I. Chip Carving – Bill Ness (Sartell, MN)Students will select projects according to their level of expertise. Variety of different size plates, boxes, music boxes, crosses, Christmas ornaments and other patterns to choose from. Various projects and supplies will be available for purchase, ranging in price from $5 to $80, based on project. Tools needed: sharp chip carving knife, protective glove and a happy face. Instructor will provide designs, spray adhesive, sandpaper and stains. Cost of materials $20 (plus cost of projects) Beginner to advanced. Class size 12.

J. Woodburning - Brenda Lodermeier (St. Cloud, MN)Open to any kind of subject matter. Students will purchase a walking stick and design your own project. Both carving and woodburning can be usedd. Techniques taught will be everything from patterns, preparation of wood, pattern placement, cleaning tips, use of burner and tips, including skews, shaders and writing tips and variations of patterns and techniques. Cost of walking stick is $20. Beginner to Advanced. Clas size 12. (Additional projects available if time allows.)

K. English Professor Caricature - Don Fischer (Cottonwood, MN)This carving is a caricature of English Professor David Johnson of Northwestern College. The carving is 6 - 8 inches tall from a basswood rough out. Some carving experience is needed. Bring your own carving knives, gouges and safety glove. Cost of Class is $30 (Includes 1 blank and finishing materials) Experienced beginner to advanced. Class size 12.

L. Carving Useable Spoons - Karen Henderson (St. Francis, MN)Students will carve useable eating/serving spoons from various hardwoods. The wood is carved green (wet) so basic hand tools can be used. No special tools needed. Just bring your favorites. Buckthorn, maple, apple, lilac and other woods will be available. All have a beautiful grain and unique color. Cost of class is $35 (Includes one blank) Other blanks availablel. Class size 12.

M. Rosemaling a Mangle Board - Alan Pearson (Fargo, ND)The project will be a Mangle board, also called a Mangletre, rosemaled in the Rogaland folk art style. This style is known for its symmetry with scrolls dominant and all parts are connected to and flowing from a central root where flowers are secondary.The student will provide their own #2 & #4 filbert or flat brushes and a #1 or smaller liner. All other supplies are provided. Cost of class is $40. (Plus$15 for cost of board) Beginner to advanced. Class size 12.

N. Introduction to Colored Pencils - Rhonda Smith (Hawley, MN)Learn how to create beautiful, realistic colored pencil drawings, using layering, burnishing and blending techniques. We will discuss texture and detail that make your artwork come to life. You will be able to choose the materials for your skill level, budget and preferred subject matter. You will complete a detailed drawing while learning new skills. Rhonda will contact you a couple weeks before to discuss supplies needed for the class. Some supplies will be provided. Cost of class is $35 (Plus cost of project materials) Beginner to intermediate. Class size 12.

O. Marian Fischer - Open Quilting and Crafting or Mystery Quilt (Cottonwood, MN) This class is for those who would like to work on their own projects; or new this year, a “Mystery Quilt.” The instructor will have 8 clues. When completed you will have a beautiful quilt top. Come for a fun filled weekend! You will need to supply your own fabric. For specific yardage or if you have any questions contact Marian Fischer @ 507-828-5056, or [email protected]. Mystery Quilt project cost is $10. Bring your own quilting supplies.

“NEW CLASS” - Beginning Wood Carving – Josh Epping (Fergus Falls, MN)This class is for the student that has minimal or no experience carving in wood. Student will learn carving

safety, handling of tools, reading the grain of wood, carving strokes and much, much more. Student will start by making a butternut otter letter opener. If time permits, the second project will be a basswood maple leaf. See separate registration page for class times and costs of taking the class.

General Notes of Importance

Check In Check in Friday, June 21, starting at 3 PM at the TechnicalCenter of North Dakota State College of Science.

Resident Halls Accommodations are double or single rooms. Sheets, towels, washcloths, pillows, pillowcases and blankets will be furnished. The residence hall is air conditioned.

Room Dorm assignments, class locations and schedule of events will be handed out when you register. Rooms are available Sunday night for $35 for single room and $30 for a double room.

Meals The first meal will be Friday night. The final meal will be Sunday at noon. Your NAME TAG should be worn at all times. It is your pass to all meals and activities. Meals before and after the workshop are available at the campus cafeteria, from their menu, at your expense.

Keys Keys for your room and the dormitory door will be in the registration packet. Remember to save the keys envelope to put keys back into when returning.

Return keys to the registration table by 2:00 PM Sunday. Those staying on Sunday night will be instructed as to where to leave their keys. All unreturned keys will be billed to the student at a cost of $50/Building Key Cards and $75/Dorm Room Keys.

Classes Classes start Friday evening. Check with your instructor when your arrive at the workshop. Classes start at 8:00 AM, resume at 1:00 PM after lunch and continue until 5:00 PM. No class changes can be made without approval by the workshop coordinators.

Enrollment Classes will be filled on a “First Come, First Served” basis, by the date your registration form is returned. Return registration forms as soon as possible! (If you took a specific class last year you will be on a waiting list, for the first 7 days of registration returns, before you will be given the choice to take the class again.) Call or e-mail Bob Splichal with any questions.

Cancellation After May 20, 2019 there will be a $30.00 charge for anyone dropping out of the workshop. After June 3, 2019, there will be no refunds. If you drop out at anytime after May 20st for medical reasons, you will receive a refund minus a $60 charge. Charge is for administration fees and to reimburse the instructor for the class blank (to be used in a weekend seminar drawing.) Courtesy Instructors will attempt to spend equal time with each student. Your cooperation will allow the instructors to accomplish this goal.

Lighting The lighting in the classrooms may be inadequate for detail carving, so you may want to Bring a Lamp.

Raffle A drawing for raffle items, and a 50/50 cash raffle, will be held at 12:30 PM Sunday in the lunch room. You must be present to win. Tickets will be sold throughout the weekend.

Smoking: Prohibited on all campus facilities.

Alcohol: Prohibited on all campus facilities.

General Meeting: Friday evening at 6:00 PM in dining room.

Impromptu classes Are held Saturday evening by the weekend instructors. Registration will be Saturday morning at the registration desk.

If you choose to stay off campus make your room reservations early.Reduced rates have been secured at most of these motels until April 30th, 2019 only!

Wahpeton is the home of a restored carousel (three blocks from campus) and the beautiful Red Door Art Gallery, refurbished from a 1915 Bank building (Main street in Wahpeton).

The International Wood Art Festival will be held at the Ramada Inn, Fargo, North Dakota, April 12, 13 & 14, 2019. Carving classes will also be available. Featured Artist will be Roger Beane from

Oskaloosa, Iowa. He will be teaching a standing 9” Basswood Santa. Additional classes will be given by Rick Jensen, Crookston, MN and Amanda Legal, Winnipeg, Canada. Vendors will be present and selling is

This is a new class that the Wahpeton Carving weekend is conducting to introduce new students to the art of woodcarving. The class is being taught by Josh Epping from Fergus Falls, MN. Josh is an experienced carver in all types of wood. This class is for the student that has minimal or no experience carving in wood. Josh will teach students carving safety, handling of tools, reading the grain of wood, carving strokes, and much, much more. Student will start by carving a butternut otter letter opener. If time permits, the second project will be a basswood maple leaf. Carving tools, 2 wood blanks and a safety carving glove are included in the class fee. (Instructor will only be conducting a formal class on Saturday, but students are welcome to stay for the weekend and informally carve with Josh all weekend.)

The cost is $100.00 per person US Funds (Canadians please use a money order in US Funds.)

Fee includes 3 meals on Saturday, 3 carving tools, 2 wood blanks and a safety carving glove. Student will have the option of staying in one of the dorm rooms on either Friday and/or Saturday nights, if staying for the weekend. Extra meals are also available for purchase.

If coming in on Friday, or staying through Sunday, the cost of the extra meals are $10.00 each (For Friday night, Sunday morning and Sunday noon meal.)
