It was boasted as the worlds largest petroleum show, and Strathmore was a part of it.

The Global Petroleum Show (GPS), held in Calgary June 12-14, had over 60,000 registered attendees, 95 coun-tries participating and over 2,000 ex-hibitors.

The Town of Strathmore had a booth right there among some of the top oil and gas industry leaders, trying to encourage investors and developers to consider Strathmore as an option. Mayor Steve Grajczyk, Chief Admin-istrative Officer Dwight Stanford and Director of Corporate Services Mel Tiede were on hand to answer ques-tions, while building new connections.

For $125 a ticket just to walk through, Grajczyk said people were serious or they didn’t attend. Stanford said there was a terrific turnout, with things picking up in the afternoons.

Today’s youth pretty much eat, sleep and breathe technology, something that Crowther Memorial Junior High (CMJHS) and Golden Hills School Di-vision (GHSD) recognize and want to encourage. With information literally at students’ fingertips, the days of crack-ing open a textbook may soon become a thing in the past.

“In September all of our Grade 7 and 8 students are going to receive their very own brand new school-issued lap-top. This is the first of its kind in this district…we are piloting this as a project with Golden Hills School Division and Crowther Memorial Junior High School,” said Linda Tucker, associate principal of Crowther Memorial Junior High.

“This will allow every student to have equal access to technology anywhere, anytime. There have been other school divisions in the province who have worked on these one-to-one initiatives, this is the first time for Golden Hills.

“The bottom line is these kids that we have today they are digital natives. We’re digital immigrants so we’re learn-ing, so for our brain its different, we have a different capacity for technol-ogy,” said Tucker.

“These students, technology and con-nectivity is their currency, they’re there. So we in education, we have to build this competence, this capacity in our schools to meet these students where they’re at and that’s why we’re embark-ing on this. We’re going to try it and see what it brings, but it’s just really about

Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale also spent most of the afternoon at the Town’s booth on June 13, helping to promote everything the area has to of-fer.

“That was a very good commitment on his part and we’re very happy he took the time to come,” said Stanford.

Stanford said some of the people they met in the three days were phe-

nomenal. One of them included the Vice President General Manager of Oil and Energy in China.

“He was very interested and he said that he will be talking to people in China about opportunities and what we have available,” said Stanford.

This was the first time in a num-ber of years that Strathmore has had a booth at the GPS, and everyone in-volved was impressed by all that was being offered.

Boy, we have been getting a lot of rain lately!

This gets me thinking about sewer back up and water damage. Sewer back up is a tricky coverage to explain, as each case of water damage is handled on a claim by claim basis but here’s the gist of it!

Just because you live in a condo, or you rent an apartment, don’t assume that you don’t need this coverage.

Sewer backup/ water damage basically covers you for a ‘sudden burst or overflow of water’. So if your bathtub or kitchen sink overfills, or your dishwasher or washing machine leak, you would have coverage to replace or rebuild some of your stuff. For example, if you bathtub overfills, then you may have water damage along the floor, under the vinyl or even the carpet in the hallway may need to be removed. Maybe it happened when you had to run out of the house suddenly and an hour goes by before you notice. You could be looking at damage to the basement as well. If there is a tv or a computer in the basement under your bathroom, these things may get damaged. Your sewer backup coverage could help to

repair or rebuild the portion of the house that was damaged, as well as your contents. Maybe not the bathtub. Or the dishwasher. But everything else could be covered. This varies case by case and company by company.

On the other hand, if there is a slow leak that is causing damage, or damage occurs because you have left the windows to your house open, then you are on your own for this. Reason being, in the eyes of the insurance world, these were situations that could be controlled.

Make sure you talk to your broker and see if this coverage is right for you!

creating opportunities for students to be innovative and creative and to connect to the world globally.”

The pilot project will see the students have their own laptops for a nominal fee. They will carry the laptop with them all throughout their time at CMJHS and Tucker said the details haven’t been worked out yet, but there may be a chance for the students to then pur-chase the laptop when they graduate, if they choose to do so.

Students will be encouraged to use their laptops in their classes and at home, and will be able to access infor-mation from around the world, under the guidance of their teachers. A big component of the pilot project is to teach digital citizenship, and inform stu-dents about being digitally ethical. Staff at Crowther will also be talking to and teaching the students to be safe online, while being critical thinkers when look-ing to Google for information.

“We need to meet students where they’re at. I think they’re coming to us so connected to the outside world, and then they come in and it’s sort of shut off. We need to change that,” said Tuck-er.

“They need to come into these build-ings and we need to be connected glob-ally. We’re really, really excited about this for our students, where it can go and the potential for the learning and imagination that’s out there for these kids.

“Teaching is changing, no longer is it

about, ‘I’m the teacher, I know all’ it’s different, we are now partnering with kids, we’re working together.”

Initially Grade 9 students won’t be re-ceiving laptops, but will have full access to the three current labs and the mobile laptop cart.

Tucker said there will be ongoing research throughout the 2012/2013 school year, and if the project is work-ing as well, as both CMJHS and GHSD believe it will, then in the fall of 2013 the new Grade 7 students will also re-ceive laptops.

Tucker said the most important piece of this initiative is not the tool itself, “because really this is a tool, kids have access right now 24/7 to knowledge at their fingertips, they already have that access” but it’s about having that infor-mation at their fingertips so the school can create thinkers, and doers, and students who can be more passionate about learning and more engaged in their schools.

The possibilities are almost endless from a digital perspective, especially with the right guidance from schools and educators.

Tucker said the details are still being worked out about the fee and the bud-get but she predicts it will be about a $60 fee. The entire school is wired for Wi-Fi, and each laptop will come with a charger and carrying case. Students will also be welcome to take the laptop home with them at the end of the day to continue on with their studies.

Strathmore won a secondary prize in the 2012 President’s Choice BBQTown contest after placing seventh out of the ten communities nominated to participate.

“I think [the competition] really brought everyone togeth-er,” said Jennifer Sawatzky, Municipal Clerk for the Town of Strathmore. “It brought us together to get something positive in town, (to) get out and know your neighbours and have some fun.

“We’re one out of ten communities in the entire country that actually won a prize. If you look at some of the communities that we were up against, Vancouver, Victoria, Whitehorse, for our small town to come in a winning position is awesome.”

“There’s no reason to be upset. We won something,” Sawatz-ky says, reminding residents who may be feeling disappoint-ed that we should be “proud.”

Strathmore will be receiving a free community BBQ event for up to 2,000 people on the President’s Choice BBQTown Tour stop, which also includes face painting, stilt walkers, bal-loon animal artists and a fire juggler.

There will also be tons of President’s Choice food to sample including snacks, beverages and grill items which is to be served during five hours of entertainment. There will be a President’s Choice ice cream truck stocking a variety of their ice cream flavours.

“Winning a second place prize is by no means a disappoint-ment,” said Sawatzky, and looking at the list of things our community will soon enjoy, it is impossible to disagree.

Months of planning and hard work came down to one extraordi-

nary night this past weekend. The ef-forts of the volunteers and committee

members paid off when people gath-ered at the Ag. grounds for Strathmore’s annual Relay for Life on June 15.

The event, which ran from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., had 148 participants, 43 volun-teers, nine committee members, 17 teams and approximately 50 survivors plus their caregivers.

“I was really impressed, I was very happy with the number of people that we had,” said committee member Kristel Lang.

“For the amount of people, the amount of teams, and the amount we raised it was a very good total.”

This year’s Relay managed to bring in approximately $45,000 to $50,000. There was $35,000 raised online, and the cash is still being sorted

out to give the exact total. The money raised will go to the Ca-

nadian Cancer Society and will be used to enhance the

quality of life for cancer patients, while sup-

porting research to try and

f i n d a cure for all types of can-cer.

All night long every-one was kept entertained by the different events, the music and MC Matt Rederburg.

“We did laps around the track, such as the chicken dance, the Macarena, potato golfing which all earned people monopoly money. Then at 6:30 a.m. they were allowed to use their monopoly money and partici-pate in a live auction where they were able to earn prizes. That went over very, very well,” said Lang.

“We really appreciate how many people stayed up and walked all night. I think part of it was because people kept saying, well when’s the auction and I kept saying in a little bit. I said in a little bit from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.,” said Lang laughing.

“We were just going to fit it in where it fit, but we had so much going on with entertainment that finally at 6 I was like we have to do this, right now. It worked quite well in that aspect.”

Anyone wanting to join the com-mittee or anyone who has feedback on things they loved, or maybe didn’t like so much are encour-aged to email [email protected].

Encouraging early learn-ing and development is just one reason why Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) has partnered with schools to provide a Pre-Kindergarten option to the area.

The option to integrate the new class was offered to all schools in Strathmore, but Brentwood and Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) were the only two schools able to meet the goal of opening the program for the fall thanks to strong enroll-ment requests.

TCA was fortunate to have a perfect physical space just waiting to be transformed into a Pre-K classroom, said principal Wayne Funk. Su-san Hunter will be teach-ing the Pre-K class and the supervising teacher will be Sheila Neufeld.

“TCA Pre-K is a stepping stone into our kindergarten program. I will be doing some of the same programs as the kindergarten teacher just in a modified way,” said Hunter.

“The program is designed to allow all students to learn at their own pace using dif-ferent strategies and learn-

ing techniques. I will be using music, play, hands-on learning. I am excited for the upcoming year and see-ing how each child grows. Pre-K is setting them up for success in kindergarten.”

“GHSD is looking to be-come the Preferred Choice of Education in all of our communities. We felt that one way to raise the com-munity’s awareness of all we offer was to broaden our programming in our ele-mentary schools,” said Funk.

“One of the options that was chosen, was to open a pre-kindergarten program that aligns itself with the current kindergarten pro-gramming. It will make the transition into a kindergar-ten program nearly seam-less for our youngest learn-ers.”

Pre-K will be held on Tues-day and Thursday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

An orientation was being held on June 21 from 9 a.m. to noon for anyone interest-ed in seeing what was being offered.

The cost of your child attending Pre-K is $100/month, and while parent volunteers aren’t required, there will be a sign up sheet for anyone interested.

With Canada Day approaching soon, the pressure is on to provide a fun day filled with activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Jennifer Sawatzky, Municipal Clerk for the Town of Strathmore, said even though this is her first year organizing the Canada day fes-tivities, she is excited.

“We have two big bands in the evening … starting from 6:30 p.m. until the fireworks start,” said Sawatzky. There will also be main stage entertainment all day long starting at 2 p.m., which includes Katie Rox.

“We have a kid’s carnival which is put on by the Crisis Society,” Sawatzky says, “they’re do-ing face painting and activities like that.”

There is also a petting zoo, jumping houses, a slide, a dunk tank, canoe races, and many different vendors throughout the day as well as singers and contests.

“There’s also a karaoke competition that will be held by the water park,” Sawatzky says,

“and the cake decorating competition is being brought back.”

The cake decorating competition involves different organizations decorating cakes to be auctioned off by M.P. Kevin Sorenson with all donations going towards the food bank.

“Definitely [check out] all the live entertain-ment, we have some really great bands this year,” said Sawatzky, “the bands playing are Pulse and Al Barret.”

“All the events will take place at Kinsmen Lake.”

She said there will also be a glow in the dark bike ride starting at the AG grounds and riding to Kinsmen Lake in time to view the fireworks. Glow in the dark decorations can be won or bought on Canada Day.

“There’s also the firefighter pancake break-fast,” Sawatzky said, “you get everything, like eggs, sausage, pancakes and bacon, it’s very popular.” The breakfast will be held at the fire hall.

As Canada Day approaches, posters with more information will be posted around town.

After graduating high school and taking a few years to ponder what his next career move would be, Nathan Hoffman decided to do something for others.

The Strathmore native, whose family has ties to the US Army, decided to put his life on the line to help keep the world a safe place.

“I knew that I wanted to carry on that family tradition of people that served in the US Army,” said Hoffman, whose mother was born in the United States of America. “My grandfather was in the second World War … a few of my uncles served in different branches; one was in the air force and one was in the marines, and one was in the navy as well.

“My cousin Chad, he’s actually active right now – he’s in the military as well.

“That’s exactly why I chose the US Army over the Canadian Army, was to carry on the family tradition.”

After making the decision to join the US Army, Hoffman quickly found himself in basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. It was an extensive 16 weeks of One Station Unit Training (OSUT), geared towards members going to the front line of duty.

“You are going to be on the front line, you’re going to be the guys on the ground fighting the fight,” said Hoffman during his vacation in Strath-more last week. “(OSUT) is a little more intense than some of the other basic training.”

Hoffman was deployed to the front lines in Af-ghanistan, arriving on May 13, 2011, until April 15 of this year. He said deployments at that time

were generally 12 months, though he did come to Strathmore in September for the birth of his child.

After his term, he headed back to Fairbanks, Alaska, where he is currently based for the next year or so when his three-year contract with the military ends.

Hoffman recalls his experience in Afghanistan.“There in Afghanistan, it’s a different fight,” he

said. “There is not a clear-cut, front-line fight. It’s not like (they’re) on one side and we’re on the other … it’s not a cut and dry front line. The in-surgency doesn’t wear uniforms, they dress just like the locals and they live with the locals and it’s difficult to distinguish friend from foe.

“(It’s scary) because there were times where we would have big meetings with the village el-ders and after the (meeting), some of the elders would come up and speak to some of our offi-cers and tell them that there were actual Taliban members in the meeting with us, gathering intel-ligence.

“They are a very smart, very well-trained fight-ing force. They know the land very well, because it is their home. They know how we operate – they are very smart and they’ve adapted to our tactics. They know exactly what we can and can not do.

“Our battlefield is very three dimensional – there is not clear-cut front line, it is everywhere around you and you never know where contact is going to come from or from who.”

According to Hoffman, Afghanistan is a very dangerous place in the world and anyone there-has their life at risk.

That is why he is thrilled to be back in North America with his wife and baby daughter.

Stir together butter and mustard and spread every other slice of bread, creating 6 sandwiches. Tuck a slice of cheese and ham into every other slice on the butter/mus-tard side of bread. Place loaf in centre of foil and seal edges tightly. Place foil wrapped loaf on grill over medium heat. Letters to the editor

To the EditorRemember the awkwardness when it came to your

first “S-talk?” Whether you were doing the talking or the listening, chances are discussing the birds and the bees was a bit uncomfortable. But it was necessary and helpful.

Fast forward to the present and it’s time to have an-other S-talk with your loved ones - this one is about stroke. Your first S-talk saved you from making bad de-cisions. This S-talk can save your life - or the life of someone you love.

Here’s why - too many Albertans don’t know that it’s crucial to call 9-1-1 immediately after stroke symptoms appear. And two-thirds of Albertans arrive at hospital too late for treatments that can prevent damage, reduce disability and save lives.

That’s why the Heart and Stroke Foundation has

launched the S-talk campaign. We want every Alber-tan to talk to their parents, families and friends about stroke warning signs and the need to seek treatment - quickly.

How quickly? For every minute of delay in treating a stroke, the average patient loses almost two million brain cells. The good news is stroke can be treated if caught early - within 3.5 hours from the onset of symptoms.

So protect the ones you love by having a talk about stroke. Help them know the signs and to call 9-1-1 if it happens. At heartandstroke.ca/stroke you’ll find out more about the S-talk and retro-inspired eCards to help get the conversation started with the people you love.

Yours in health,Donna Hastings

Pat FuleFule for Thought

Now that Spring has passed and Summer is here, you can hear the sounds of slo-pitch at the diamonds. You can also hear the regular claps of thunder, see the pounding hail/rain, and truly feel that it is baseball season in the County. Once upon a time (1970’s and 80’s), slo-pitch was not as popular as it is now. In fact, if a person suggested playing Co-Ed softball, he or she would be stared down!

Back then, baseball and fastball were the two types of ball that were played the most. In the Canmore area, a very competitive Men’s Fastball league ran for many years, and had successful teams that played in the league and in “Cash” Tournaments. This column is not about any of those teams.

I played on the world’s WORST fastball team in the history of recorded fastball games. We were the Canmore Pistols, dressed in the Yellow/Green/White uniforms of the old Oakland As. Even the look of the uniform alone, should have warned me what the next three summers would have in store for me, but I ignored all the signs!

The team was made up of players who left other Bow Valley fastball teams, and I slowly found out WHY they left … well actually they were encour-aged to leave! The other players consisted of my brother (who we abandoned in a theatre … earlier column flashback!), young hippies who thought Woodstock was still going on, a couple of my ex-teachers, and me, who never played baseball - EVER! I was more of a basketball player, but hey, I thought … how hard could it be? I was to find out in more ways than one … it would be VERY hard.

Our first season, we went 0-24, as in NEVER be-ing able to win a game, no matter what! We almost won one in mid-May, as we had the lead briefly, and a spring snowstorm hit at that time. I still feel it was a win, as they hadn’t scored 20 runs on us, AND we had the lead! Not only did we go 0-24, we did it with panache, with gusto , and with very little talent! We had a pitcher with hair so long, and in his eyes, I swear he could not see the plate! He had developed a brilliant strategy when-ever we were facing loaded bases (by the way, NOW when we play slo-pitch in High School PE classes, if the bases are loaded, I have trained my students to follow my lead. I pitch for both teams, to be unbiased, and to make sure if anyone gets rocked with a line drive … it’s me. Anyway, when the bases are loaded in class, I yell out: “bases are loaded”…???... and the kids respond “like Mrs. Fule on a Saturday night!”).

If you want to call the school division, I un-derstand. Back to our hippie pitcher. His strategy, while we faced loaded bases, was to intentionally

throw the ball PAST the catcher! Then he’d race home and try to tag out the run, as the catcher fired him the ball. The only drawback to his plan, was that he never told us WHEN he would do this! We were always surprised as one, sometimes two runs would score! I would stand sadly, huff-ing and puffing at Centrefield watching the chaos.

I was huffing and puffing usually, because we often lost by scores of 35-3, or 41-5! THAT meant there was an incredible number of hits … usually high ones deep to ANY field, or screamers over second base. I actually got down to 165 lbs. in this season! (Hmmm…maybe we should get the boys back together!)

Because I never played before, I was a fearless batter … that also meant, I led the team in getting hit by pitches! In fact, in one game in Cochrane, I was hit three times! I found this to be a pretty good strategy, as I’d get on base (wounded) and had some speed to be a threat. However, you did need SOMEONE to be able to hit eventually, so THAT was also a failed strategy!

We had one player who shall remain nameless, but he was the most unusual character I’ve ever met. He was a wild partier (sometimes DURING the games), and he always was up to something crazy.

In fact at one of the fastball tournaments I missed, the organizers had a “petting zoo.”

I’ll bet you’re starting to guess where this is go-ing! Yep, he decided when our games were done … (winless, I’m sure!), that he’d like to barbecue.

So, when no one was looking, he hopped the fence, bat in hand, bonked a piglet on the head, and had pork for supper! People always wondered what became of him, and you’d be surprised he settled into a relatively normal family life.

There was one other player who stands out to me from the old Pistols team. He was up to bat in a game, and a screaming fastball hit him on the knuckles of one hand. The skin was torn back to reveal a bloody mess. After a brief delay, his hand was wrapped, and he was on first base. A walk happened next, followed by a Pistol hit to shallow right field (hard to believe, I know). He sprinted to third with his bloody hand pumping with the other … only to be hit in the head by the throw to third base! He was knocked out, and as usual, we lost! I don’t think he cared, and I don’t think he even remembered. I’m so thankful for all he did for me, for all his sacrifices, all so I could have a better life.

(“Fule for Thought” is a slice of life humourous column that will appear in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two – Pat Fule. If you would like to get in touch with Pat, you can send him an e-mail at [email protected])

Thanks to ongoing support from Encana, even more kids will be able to experience the prehistoric magic of the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s camp this year. Since 2007, Encana has made summer camp experiences available to underprivileged kids, funded improvements to campinfrastructure and supported a new Leadership Training Program for camp counselors.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sleep in a real teepee or prospect for dinosaur fossils? Those are just some of the amazing adventures the Encana Badlands Science Camp offers to children of all ages at the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum in the heart of Alberta’s badlands. The camp offers six sessions for kids and families to participate in unique, hands-on learning opportunities - igniting curiosity and appreciation for natural sciences and the environment.

“Besides being home to many of the communities where Encana employees live and work, the badlands are a special place in Alberta and have significant historical value,” says Mike Selleck, Vice-President of Encana’s operations in south central Alberta.

“You may not realize it, but there’s a direct link between the origins of the natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil that we produce and the time of the dinosaurs. That link can be revisited through the wonders of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. We hope the experience campers have at the Encana Badlands Science Camp will spark their passion to continue exploring science and the natural world.”

Alberta Works, in partnership Siksika Employment and Training, hosted a job fair June 12 at the Siksika Community Centre, to highlight the Fort McMurray Oil Sands and Wood Buffalo County employment and training opportunities for Siksika Youth.

The presentation showed in two ad-ditional Alberta First Nation communi-ties.

“We chose to make presentations in Aboriginal communities because of their increased unemployment rates,” said Ron Ingram, Alberta Human Re-sources and Employment Contract Ser-vices Coordinator. “We want to make them aware of the opportunities and the realities of working in the camps.

By the year 2020, the oil sands pro-duction will produce approximately five million barrels of oil a day. There is a worker shortage to meet that quota.

The Alberta government is devel-oping education and employment in-centives like those offered by Alberta Works to meet that need.

The federal government has drafted a much-contested Bill C-38 that it hopes will meet the additional numbers of workers employed in all Canada. Ca-nadians are talking and tweeting the issues of Bill C-38, which supports oil sands developments through increased immigration to meet increasing worker shortages, changes to Aboriginal rights and toughening unemployment.

Many of the potential oil sands em-ployers have clauses in their develop-ment contracts which support the em-ployment of aboriginal workers. The average age of Siksika residents is

25-years-old with 20 per cent having graduated high school and 12 per cent having trade certificates. Wages offered in the oil sands for technical tradesmen and professionals with advanced certi-fication is more than triple what native workers presently earn in other em-ployment situations, which makes the offer very attractive.

However, housing and living ex-penses are also triple, with an average three-bedroom house selling for ap-proximately $789,000. Even rent rang-es from $1,200 for a bachelor suite to $2,700 a month for two to three bed-room accommodations. Food prices are also elevated. Many of the companies have work camps, provide meals and accommodation, and fly the workers in and out on a 21-28 day rotating sched-ule. Many workers find separation from family and friends difficult.

In 2009, the Canadian Policy Re-search Network did a study on the im-pact working in the oil industry had on aboriginal workers.

They found their cultural back-grounds, need for community ties, edu-cational upgrading and ties to the land often made it difficult for the aboriginal employees to adapt. There have been efforts to remedy those situations. In-gram said they had arranged for groups of 10 to 15 employees from the same aboriginal area to work together, which provided them better peer support, and as well, developed many new paid training programs for potential employ-ees.

Advisors suggested to gain employ-ment, potential employees should do research and approach contract com-panies that supply the major projects, some of which are listed at www.wood-

The problem with contract companies is the work is often sporadic and benefits are hard to get. There are also drawbacks for the workers regard-ing unemployment insurance claims.

Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier and several elders addressed the discussion held in the community centre and encouraged the youth to take advantage of the em-ployment opportunities presented to them, saying that the reservation would always be there and their involvement in the project would support their fami-lies and the community at large.

Government, training officers and industry representatives were on hand after the presentation to help any in-terested employment/training seekers to access programs, funding and di-rections towards a new career and fu-ture. Saturday was awesome. That was one of the first things Alicia Flint could think to say about the bike giveaway held in front of Optimum Wellness Centre on June 16. The plan was hatched with an idea by Strathmore resident Cory Johnson to help promote healthy and active lifestyles in youth, while helping those in need, by asking people to donate their old bikes to be fixed up and given away. It was Flint who grasped onto the idea and created the bike giveaway into what it was.

“We were able to redistribute over 20 bicycles back into the community in those three hours. All recipients were referred to us from the schools or other organizations in Strathmore,” said Flint.

“There were so many heartwarming stories. We had the opportunity to see the joy on their faces. We take for granted that most children in this day and age have bicycles, but we learned that this is not the case.”

Being able to give back to the community, and to

hand the bike to the child and see the look on their face was one of the best parts of the afternoon. Knowing and seeing the community come on board to support the idea also added to the experience.

“We have been overwhelmed by the community response and support. This was supposed to be a one shot deal but we decided that we had carry this though over the summer,” said Flint.

“As well, I would love the chance to sincerely thank The Town of Strathmore, in particular Mar-tin one of the bylaw officers, for donating over 20 bicycles to us. Same with the community of Cluny who donated 25.”

The Orford’s who own Strathmore’s Canadian Tire not only donated a majority of the parts needed but also gave deal on helmets so that the donated funds went farther. This ensured that every minor who received a bike was also given a helmet if needed.

Because the bike giveaway is being held through-out the summer, Flint is looking for more used bi-cycles in good working condition.

Anyone wishing to donate can contact her at 403-921-7703.

On June 16, Alicia Flint and Cory Johnson, along with the help from volunteers, gave away bikes to children in need, and offered tune-ups to those interested.

Whether it is a hobby, a job,or a schooling experience, Strath-more houses some great local artists with a wide variety of in-terests.

Rebecca Gyulai, a nineteen-year-old student who is earning a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English, says that she “really loves to write” and hopes to get into either journalism, technical writing, or teaching.

“I’m writing a novella com-prised of short stories right now and messing with some poetry,” said Gyulai, who considers her-self more of an ‘essayist than a novelist’ due to the amount of essays she writes for university. “My novella is a social satire on a wide variety of topics, mostly taboo or social issues that are swept under the rug.”

Gyulai said that “inspiration doesn’t always come to you” and when it does, you have to

go with it. She advises new writ-ers to not stress about inspira-tion. Gyulai also says it is crucial to draw from real-life experi-ences in your writing because it can create great work. Aspiring writers should just “ease into the kind of writing” they would like to do.

Andrew Vooys, an eighteen-year-old lifeguard, says that the most important thing for writ-ers-to-be is to “just get out and write.”

He is a poet and a playwright-er, and says that he finds the “sheer depth of emotion and ex-pression” of poetry appealing as well as the passion that poems can create.

While Vooys would like his work published, “having it as an outlet is enough.”

“I find that writing relaxes me and helps me to keep things in check; by writing down what I think and feel, I can get a much better handle on what I’m think-ing of, on what is lying in wait

within my subconscious,” he says.

Geoff Vooys is a twenty-year-old student who is working towards degrees in both Pure Mathematics and English and says writing is “mostly a hobby” and a way to express his hu-mour.

“If your readers can relate to something, if they can feel it in their heart, you’ve done your job and written something that matters. If it’s your goal to make people laugh, you need to know what people will relate to in order to make them chuckle,” Geoff said.

While Geoff admits that “at heart I’m a mathematician,” he does enjoy writing and says that reading is also a great way to improve writing skills.

“You’ll find that you become a better writer for seeing how other people write,” he says.

Geoff says he does “a little bit of everything” but focuses on satires, short stories and poems.

Skilled workers and strong leaders are impera-tive for economic growth and development in ru-ral communities.

A labour market research project is underway and is focused on the Strathmore and Chester-mere region. The intention is to identify work-place and leadership needs.

Bow Valley College, Alberta Works, The Banff Centre, and Alberta Rural Development Network have partnered together to conduct a research project, ‘Rural Employer Access to Workplace Training and Aboriginal Engagement.’

The data collection has taken the form of an online survey, and is directed at employers and business owners in the local region. In order to produce accurate results, the survey was recom-mended to acquire feedback from over 50 pa-trons. The survey has successfully exceeded the desired number with over 75 individual respons-es.

“It’s a bit of a debate between qualitative and quantitative response, but we wanted to make sure we were reflecting the current or emerging issues, significantly impacting any of the human resource requirements for any labour market ad-justment needs,” said Teri McKinnon, the Project Manager and Regional Education Representative of Bow Valley College.

The data collection process will be complete by the end of June, and the final results will be presented to Strathmore and Chestermere busi-ness communities in September, 2012.

“I am really thrilled with the engagement level of employers and their willingness to participate because I do believe that any labour market data is important for every business owner so that they can facilitate any issues that they are seeing or, strategize for industries as a whole.”

The labour market research project is focused on identifying workplace needs in regards to the local economy. Recognizing workplace gaps and shortages in the gathering of information will be made available to educational institutions, so that action plans can be created to deliver local, rel-evant, and accessible training services.

In addition to identifying workplace develop-ment needs, building strong leaders goes fairly hand in hand because “leaders need work and work needs leaders.”

“We think the leaders guide the economic base; we want to make sure we are building strong leaders to provide for rural areas so that they can grow.”

More information can be found by contacting Teri McKinnon at tmckinnon@bowvalley college.ca or Research Officer, Tina Jarrett at [email protected].

Corri Kennedy is already excited about getting back to school this fall. Mrs. Kenne-dy is the newest addition to Wheatland Elementary’s K-3 Montessori-trained teaching staff which includes Mrs. Le-anne Pinel and Mrs. Vicky Smith.

Teaching since 1998, Mrs. Kennedy’s experience with the Calgary Board of Edu-cation spans grades K-3 and includes five years of teaching special education. She also has a strong back-ground in early literacy. In 2007, Mrs. Kennedy and her family moved to Strathmore from Calgary and have en-joyed becoming active in the local community.

This fall will mark the eighth school year for Wheatland’s Montessori pro-gram. The grade K/1 and 2/3 classrooms are characterized with specially designed, ma-nipulative materials inviting students to engage in learn-ing activities at their own pace. Under the guidance of a trained teacher, children learn by making discoveries with the Montessori materi-als, cultivating concentra-tion, motivation, self disci-pline and a love of learning. A significant benefit of the Montessori philosophy is the way it allows students to learn at an individual-ized pace, providing enrich-ment which can even chal-

lenge students to progress beyond regular grade level. It is important to note that though the way in which the students learn differs from a mainstream classroom, the curriculum set out by Alber-ta Education is followed.

Supporting the Montes-sori Program at Wheatland Elementary is the parent-run charitable organization the Strathmore Montessori Society. As an Alternative Program in Golden Hills School Division, the Montes-sori program receives fund-ing for teacher salaries, but this financial support covers neither the cost of Montes-sori materials nor specific Montessori teacher training, required in addition to a de-gree in Education. The SMS serves as the fundraising body to ensure these facets are addressed.

At present, there are still a few spaces left in the Montessori Kindergarten program at Wheatland El-ementary School which runs mornings, Monday to Friday. If you are interested in reg-istering your child in Mon-tessori at any grade level or would like more informa-tion, please call Wheatland Elementary School at 403-934-3318 and ask to speak to Principal Kevin Lane or Associate Principal Michelle Silver Rushford. Alterna-tively, feel free to call Trina Lloyd of the Strathmore Montessori Society at 403-901-0516.

Jason Hale, MLA for Strathmore/Brooks con-stituency, met with Wheatland Council to discuss issues affecting the residents of the area. He is dropping in to towns and villages in the area to get acquainted with the people sitting on the dif-ferent councils.

“We are currently getting oriented as to where we are at in Edmonton. We have had the first sitting with the speaker and the address to the throne,” said Hale.

Hale has found office space in Strathmore and will tentatively be in Strathmore two days a week and in Brooks two days a week, when not attend-ing sessions of government.

“My job now is to represent this area, regardless of the side of the house I am sitting on. Our of-ficial stance is to get along and build relationships with ministers. Realistically, we will not always agree on everything,” Hale said.

As Opposition Energy Critic, he met with the Alberta Energy Minister, where they agreed to

share ideas and to support what is best for the oil industry.

Council asked how they could voice their con-cerns in government. Hale replied that the council should still go through traditional channels ad-dressing the appropriate government committee members and ministers.

He will be available to attend meetings with the various members on invitation from the council and help find resolutions to their problems. If un-available to attend the meeting, he asked council to keep him in the loop about issue developments and he will make an appointment to discuss solu-tions with the appropriate people.

Council outlined the various municipal partner-ships that Wheatland County is involved in and targeted a few issues such as water resources and finding a voice outside of the Calgary Regional Partnership.

The county is taking measures ensure their voice is heard by forming their own partnership called Wheatland Regional Water Partnership which would include Rockyford, Hussar, Standard and possibly Okotoks.

Whether it is a bridal shower, a cor-porate meeting or a wedding, planning an event is time-consuming and can be a hectic process.

Brenda Duffield, who purchased Gold Standard Events a year and a half ago, is the Design Co-ordinator. She says that event planners have several advantages, similar to a wedding plan-ner, including stress relief and consulta-tions.

“We are immersed in everything to do with weddings and events so we have a lot of creative sources to pull from for ideas to make your event unique and suited to you and your guests,” Duffield said.

To make an event stand out, Duffield recommends a theme to help tie all de-tails in together. Duffield also suggests that picking a theme that is relevant to the event can give it extra continuity.

Amanda Bazant, owner of Studio B Events, agrees that events with a theme boost the entire experience for both hosts and guests.

“[The guests] are taking time out of their day to enjoy your event,” Bazant said, “you want to make them feel wel-come.”

Duffield said the cost of the event varies mostly on the size, rather than the type. “It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning an event,” says Duffield.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of having a well-organized and co-ordi-nated event,” says Duffield.

Bazant says “food is huge,” especially in a wedding, as well as spending mon-ey on decor to help tie everything in the event together. Duffield says event planners “know about all the details” that can often get overlooked, and they also know “touches that make your event stand out.”

Bazant also recommends the use of social media sites, such as Pinterest and Instagram. Bazant said these tools are “essentials” for all, even planners, and they often refer back to them to get new and fresh ideas.

For supplies to make your event spe-cial, Duffield says most event planners will be able to offer you many different services, such as decor rental, which is offered by Gold Studio Events.

Planning for any event made a little easier

Safety lives in your community

After four years of fundraising and planning, construction on the new Stan-dard Community Hall has finally begun.

The quonset on the site was demol-ished and hauled away by Knibb Devel-opments and Bob Davidson’s Top Waste. Gray’s Excavating is clearing away the topsoil. Genivar is handling the tender-ing and site management, and the con-tractor is IMG Design Build from Cal-gary.

The project for the site and building came in well below the original pro-jected cost. Susan Bragg (Standard Hall Board Director) said that “after paying for our lot, blueprints and engineering we have over $1.1 million to start con-struction including $34,395 from the Provincial Community Spirit Program. We also have applied for $375,000 un-der the Community Facility Enhance-ment Program and will borrow money from the Alberta Treasury Branch as we need it.”

As they continue to fundraise with a Golf Tournament in Bassano on July 28,

and a Golf Ball Drop, Home Run Hitting Derby and Dunk Tank on Sports Day, Saturday, June 23 they will be able to reach their goal quicker in having the Standard Hall become a reality.

There have been many generous do-nations from local businesses and indi-viduals. Their major donors to date in-clude the Standard Lions, Encana, Gates Agencies, Standard Lionettes and Husky Oil and many private contributors.

Residents have had fun participating

in the various fundraising events over the last four years including events dur-ing their Annual Sports Day, concerts performed by local country music artist Drew Gregory, and Gold Tournaments just to name a few.

The saying “many hands make for light work” always rings true in small ru-ral communities such as Standard where everyone can come together to work on a project that will benefit the whole community in one way or another.

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor

Inspired from a daily newspaper in Calgary, schools from Strathmore and area have organized their own award with Strathmore’s weekly newspaper.

The Strathmore Times Class Act Award was created to recognize well deserving individuals who carry a well rounded excellence in academics, ar-eas outside of academics and possess strong character qualities.

“We had a committee and asked the teachers to nominate a student who’s either involved as a community vol-unteer worker, an athlete, or whatever and met as a group with what we knew about the kids, and to us, wanted to pick someone who’s a classy kid in all aspects,” said Vice Principal, Kyle Lar-son.

The SHS student who received the award was recently graduated Parker Gavey.

Gavey was deeply involved with the school as co-president of the Student Leadership Committee, and is a mem-

ber of the Strathmore Assembly of Youth. In addition, Gavey had been a volunteer for the Strathmore Lion’s Club for three years.

“I have been working pretty hard to get scholarships, I have been volunteer-ing within the community and volun-teering at the school, it was really nice when I got this one,” said Gavey.

Post secondary plans are currently “up in the air, I have a couple differ-ent ideas but they are so far apart,” ex-plained Gavey, who currently wants to work and save next year for a trip to Europe the following summer.

“It’s kind of weird, you’re done and it’s 12 years of your life that’s over. Then again, you’re stepping out into the real world and you have to make your own decisions.”

Cory Johnson was at Foothills Athletic Park June 9 and 10 racing to qualify for Nationals, which will be held June 27 to 30.

Competing for a spot in the Paralympic NationalsShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

It was only in March 2011 when Johnson laced up his runners and hit the track. Shortly after beginning to run, he broke the Canadian record for the 100-metre sprint. In May, Johnson, who has Cerebral Palsy, was at it again when he set the record for the 200-metre, breaking the previ-ous record by 3.2 seconds. The previous record was 22-years-old. Johnson’s record breaking run left him only 1.7 seconds away from qualifying for the Paralympic Nationals.

“My goal is to make the International B Stan-dards. So they have A Standards and B Standards, and for B Standards if you make the minimum qualifying times for the Olympics, if I can meet those then I can say I have done what I needed to do to qualify for the Olympics,” said Johnson.

“But it doesn’t necessarily mean that I will ac-tually get to go because Canada doesn’t have very many spots available so they need to take the best of the best. Canada sets their standards way higher, their standards are like 12.45 and the Olympic standards are 14.7. So I’m aiming for 14.7.”

Johnson has one last chance to qualify for Na-tionals with the 200-metre sprint, which is on June 23 in St. Albert. He said it is tough to go all that way to qualify for Nationals knowing he won’t make it to the Paralympics.

Last year the focus was on learning trying to find his stride, and get the basics down. Now he is spending three to five days a week in Calgary training with his coach Jason at either the Foot-hills or Glenmore Athletic Parks. Running and pushing to go further every time is a passion for Johnson, and not something he plans to give up soon.

“I have an opportunity to represent Canada next year in the International Track and Field Games and then I have an opportunity for 2015 for the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Am Games,” said Johnson.

“So I want to be in it until at least 2015 so I can get a chance to represent Canada on an In-ternational level.”

Johnson is enjoying aiming for the Paralym-pics so much that he is already considering a new challenge. He is thinking of trying out for the Canadian Para bobsled team this summer because he would be the only push athlete as of right now, and then he can be involved with both the winter and the summer Paralympics.

Rugby players faceoff against teammates

Playing together at a provincial levelJenna CampbeLL Times Contributor

The 2012 Alberta Summer Games is underway and four of Strathmore’s own inline hockey players will be attending at Lethbridge, July 26-29.

Athletes Tyson Ramsey (13), Austin Drummond (14), Tate Barnett (13) and goalie Cody Kozma (12) will be competing together on the same team from Zone #2, along with eight other players.

The Summer Games are Alberta’s foremost multi-level sporting event with over 2,800 participants com-ing from eight zones across the province, ages ranging from 11-17. There is a predetermined number of play-ers allowed to compete from each zone creating an equal representation from across Alberta.

The boys are excited for the games as they have never attended before. The four are also excited be-cause in addition to being inline hockey teammates in Strathmore, they will also get to be teammates at a provincial level.

In addition to being new to the summer games, it is both Drummond’s and Ramsey’s first year of playing

inline hockey, but both began playing ice hockey at a young age.

“It’s on wheels and it’s harder to stop. You can’t stop like you usually do,” explained Drummond.

The boys were notified about the tryouts, which took place on June 2-3, through Hockey Alberta. There were 14 kids in total who attended tryouts with the results of two having to get cut.

“(The tryouts) were challenging, it was really hard,” said Ramsey.

In preparation to the games, Drummond has been trying to increase his level of running.

“I’m working out, running from my house to the mailbox which is like two miles. I am running lots and working hard for it,” said Drummond.

According to Ramsey, the group of four are, “very excited.”

“It’s going to be fun, we’ll have a great time.”The boys will be having a bottle drive on the 23rd,

to help pay for the cost to attend the games, which is around $460 per player. The public is welcome to leave bottles outside or email [email protected] to organize bottle pickup from a residence.

Congratulations to the Strathmore Ren-egades for winning the gold medal on June 17 and claim-ing title of champions for Squirt Division 1 in the Calgary Girls Fast-pitch league. It was a thrilling finish against South Bow River Cal-gary, going to extra innings, and ending in a score of 14 to 13. Congratulations to the girls on a fantastic weekend!

For Dawson Johnson, getting a chance to head to Winnemucca, Nevada for the Silver State International Rodeo (SSIR) for calf roping is no big deal. He’s a cowboy through and through, and ro-deo is just a part of who he is.

“He’s 18 so this is his last year with High School Rodeo, so we’re all just very pleased he’s going out with mak-ing it to the finals. It’s a great way to end his career with High School Ro-deo,” said Myrna Johnson, Dawson’s mom.

“It’s a huge deal to go down there, it’s a six day rodeo its from July 2 to 7. He kind of had to go through a bit of adversity this year to get where he is. He missed out on the last probably five rodeos because he severely sprained his ankle while he was calf roping at one of the rodeos. His horse also went lame, his good horse, and so he trained a young colt himself and within five months he had it ready.”

Dawson has had a career with the

Strathmore and District High School Rodeo for years, focusing on his calf roping. It was on the weekend of June 9 that he qualified for a chance to go to the SSIR.

“This is just... an invitational rodeo so it’s the top 15 from Alberta who go to this rodeo. After this I’m just going to do some more amateur stuff,” said Johnson.

Fuel Automotive, Jesco Electric, Lakeshore Country Market, Ray Stew-art have all signed on to be Johnson’s sponsors. Johnson said he is also grate-ful to Lorne Lausen with Lausen indoor arena where he practices.

He is excited to be heading to Ne-vada, and said he hasn’t been there yet to compete.

Rodeo can be tough, there’s always the risk of injury, and it can be tough to make your mark and qualify for one of the bigger rodeos.

“Never give up,” is Johnson’s advice for aspiring cowboys and cowgirls.

“It’s tough, there’s lots of competition but you’ve got to keep trying and ev-erything will work out.”

Roping his way to the top

Winning streak continues for Standard baseball teams

Dawson Johnson, 18, will be head-ing to Nevada in just over a week to compete in the Silver State Interna-tional Rodeo.

The year is wrapping up for our club and I have to say it has been a good one! The last couple of months we have been busy with various club activities. On March 23, we went skiing to Na-kiska and had a great time with fellow members and families.

Our club always participates in the Highway Clean-up activity. This year was a great show of our determina-tion and willingness as a club. It was freezing cold and rained lots the entire morning of May 5, but we got it done. Have to say it was the wettest I have seen our club in a long time.

We held our annual Beef Mini-Show on May 31 at Bar Box Farm and Ranch. It started at 4:30 p.m. and we had a pizza and pop supper to follow. All the calves were well behaved and it was great practice for us all.

The big day arrived on June 9. Our club is part of the West Wheatland Dis-trict 4-H Show and Sale. It takes place in Rockyford at the Sportsplex. We set up for the show on Thursday, June 7 and once again we had a great show-

ing and lots of help from our parents. Thanks to our moms and some dads who made the chili to feed us at set-up.

Our club had a very successful day at our Show and Sale. Taylor Elder, one of Rockyford’s Senior members, won Su-preme Grand Champion. She was also the Senior Grand Showmanship Cham-pion and the Senior Grand Grooming Champion. Congrats Taylor on the Tri-ple Champion win at our show day. Her steer was purchased by Strathmore’s Kal Tire for $4/lb.

Samuel Kathol, a junior member of the Rockyford Beef club, won the Supreme Reserve Grand Champion. He also won Reserve Rockyford Club Champion and Second Rockyford Club Junior Groom-ing. His steer was purchased by Rich-ardson Pioneer Carseland for $3.10/lb. Good job Sam!

Our club also won Best Kept Stalls for the day. CONGRATS!

A special thanks to all our members, parents and leaders for your help to make our day a success. Also, thank you to the community and the Rocky-ford Lions Club and Ag-Society for your continued support of our Show and Sale.

Standard kids catch the ‘big one’madison Wheeler and her brother mitchel Wheeler along with family friend Cam Wheatly participated in the Father’s Day Fishing Derby in Little Bow Provincial Park. The kids won a fishing boat and around $6,000 in extra prizes. They are now able to participate in Kenora On-tario for the Championship Derby this coming August. madison who is Grade 5 at Standard school said, “I only went for a T-Shirt and end-ed up with two shirts, a boat and a lot more stuff”. She came away with the biggest fish of the tournament.

Baseball has really taken off in Standard after a 15+ year hiatus. Three teams with over 20 kids per team are out in full force for prac-tices and are geared up for games through east Wheat-land. The mosquito team had two wins this week against Hussar and the Drumheller Dragons. They also won their respective games on Thursday night against the Hussar Hawks.
