● As kids arrive, give each kid a different colored dot sticker. This will determine which team they’re on. Each small group will need a different color.

● Prepare all activity supplies before the activities start!

● Keep kids in small groups until their parents pick them up, while one volunteer checks kids’ name tags at check out.

*We’re switching up the schedule this month! The hour is broken up into six parts, alternating between large and small groups:

Part 1 (10 minutes)● Large group (5 minutes after service starts)

Part 2 (10 minutes)● May be in one large group OR small groups

Part 3 (10 minutes)● Gather kids back into one large group

Part 4 (10 minutes)● May be in one large group OR small groups

Part 5 (10 minutes)● Gather kids back into one large group

Part 6 (10 minutes)● Return to small groups until pick up

How to prepare for timing of the new lesson format:

● Plan each section of the hour to take 10 minutes.

● There are 10-minute keynote timers to help kids see when they need to transition. Start this timer for parts of the lesson that have an activity.

● When the timer is up, the activity is done, and kids transition back to Large Group.

How to prepare for activities in this new lesson format:

● Assign groups at the beginning of the hour by giving every kid a different colored sticker.

● Kids may return to these small groups throughout the hour, and they need to know WHERE that small group should sit.

GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Introduce and discuss today’s BIG IDEA.

Supplies: None

Homemade Rock Candy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODEWEnAm7wU)

Time: 10 minutes

Tip: As kids arrive, give each kid a different colored dot sticker. This will determine which team they’re on. Each small group will need a different color.

● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. I’m so happy to see you guys here. This month we’ve been hearing all about how God created a perfect world...but it didn’t stay that way. Does anyone know why? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Yep, people chose to disobey God, and with those wrong choices, ALL the wrong things in the world began. Luckily, God didn’t leave the world that way. He had a PLAN to make it right again….and he started by building a family!

● Ask: Raise your hand if you have a family, or people you think of as your family? (Let kids respond.) Well God decided to build a special family for Jesus, the rescuer, to be born into.

● Say: God started this special family with a guy named Abraham and his wife Sarah. He promised that THEY would be the father and mother of a huge family! And that leads to today’s BIG IDEA: God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us.

● Say: The thing is, Abraham and Sarah didn’t have any kids. And they were pretty old, probably around 90! They had been waiting to have a baby for a very, VERY long time.

● Ask: How do you think Abraham and Sarah felt when they were waiting for a baby, and it was taking sooooo long? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, maybe tired, disappointed, or sad. It’s hard to wait for something you really, really want!

● Say: Let’s check out a video of a cool science experiment. As you watch, try to figure out why waiting is an important part of the experiment!

● Video: Sick Science / Homemade Rock Candy● Ask: So why couldn’t that experiment be done in just a few

minutes? What had to happen for the rock candy to form? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it had to soak in that green mixture for a really long time, so the crystals could form!

● Say: It was the same with Abraham and Sarah. They waited a really long time to have a family. But they also knew that God always keeps his promises, so they trusted in him….and they kept waiting.

TRANSITION● It’s time to break into small groups and find out more about this

promise God made. Everyone army crawl across the floor to get into your group! (Direct kids to where their team’s color is sitting. They can go to tables, or they can stay in the large group area and circle up on the floor.)

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 1 (Large Group)

Page 3: June 23-24 2018 Science Experiments: Abraham and Sarah49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp... · 2018. 6. 5. · keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and

SPLIT INTO SMALL GROUPS

Main Goal: Discuss with kids how they’ve experienced waiting and promises.

Supplies:● Adventure Bible

(2/group)

Time: 10 minutes

● Look up Genesis 15:4-5 in your group’s Bible, and read it out loud (or have a kid read it for the group). You can start with the sentence listed below instead of at the beginning of verse 4:

○ Genesis 15:4-5: You will have a son of your own. He will get everything you have.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can.” Then he said to him, “That’s how many children will be born into your family.”

● Ask: ○ What’s the promise that God made to Abraham? (Let

kids respond.)○ What do you think Abraham did after he heard that from

God?● Look up the next verse, Genesis 15:6, and read it out loud to

see what Abraham did:○ Genesis 15:6: Abram believed the Lord. The Lord

was pleased with Abram because he believed. So Abram’s faith made him right with the Lord.

● Ask:○ Have you ever had to wait for something? What was it?

Why was it hard to wait?○ What’s a promise?○ Have you ever made a promise? ○ Has anyone ever made a promise to you? Did you have

to wait for it to happen?○ What promise did Abraham and Sarah have to wait for?

TRANSITION● Say: Now let’s all get back into one large group by crab walking

on our hands and feet! (Direct kids back to the large group area.)

*When the 10-minute timer is up, go back to Large Group.

Part 2 (Small Groups)

Page 4: June 23-24 2018 Science Experiments: Abraham and Sarah49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp... · 2018. 6. 5. · keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and

GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Find out how God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah, and why he’ll keep his promises to us too.

Supplies: None

Video: ● Video: God’s Story /

Abraham and Sarah

Time: 10 minutes

● Ask: Can I have a volunteer tell the room the promise God made to Abraham? (Let a kid share out loud.)

● Say: Yes, God promised him that he and Sarah would have a son of their own, and eventually, there would be so many people in their family, they would outnumber the stars in the sky! That’s a pretty amazing promise, right??

● Say: Let’s remember our BIG IDEA for today: God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and God wants US to believe it too.

● Say: We’re going to watch a video and see exactly how God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah, and how it shows that he’ll keep his promises to us too.

● Video: God’s Story / Abraham and Sarah● Say: You know, Abraham and Sarah could have been really

worried when they waited so long for Isaac. We know Sarah laughed when she heard she was going to have a son! It seemed impossible to her!

● Say: Sometimes things happen to us that make us worried or afraid. We might wonder if God has a plan for us…or if he’ll really keep his promises…or if God can actually help us with something. And when we start to feel that way, we can just remember the verse we’ve been learning all month! Can I have a volunteer read it?

● Slide: Colossians 1:16a All things were created in him. He created everything in heaven and on earth. He created everything that can be seen and everything that can’t be seen.

● Say: God created everything in the universe! Everything that we can see, and everything we can’t see! He can do ANYTHING, and that includes taking care of us and keeping his promises.

● Say: So who remembers what happened to Abraham’s family? (Let kids respond.) Yep, Abraham and Sarah’s family got bigger, just like God said it would. It became a whole nation, called Israel. From that family, came Jesus, who would one day die to take the punishment for ALL the wrong things in the world. So now WE can choose to follow Jesus and be part of God’s family, too! And we get to be counted among all those stars (refer to the picture).

TRANSITION● Say: To help us remember how God kept his promise, and

made Abraham’s family grow into a huge nation, let’s play a game! (Stay in one large group for the next activity.)

*Start the 10-minute timer for the next part of the lesson.

Part 3 (Large Group)

Page 5: June 23-24 2018 Science Experiments: Abraham and Sarah49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp... · 2018. 6. 5. · keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and

STAY IN ONE LARGE GROUP.

Main Goal: Play a fun version of tag to help kids understand how Abraham’s family grew and grew!

Supplies: None

Time: 10 minutes

CHAIN TAG● Choose one kid to be “it”● “It” has to try and tag another kid.● When they tag someone, that kid links arms and becomes “it”

too. Now both kids (with arms linked) have to try and tag more kids, and add them to their chain.

● The chain will get longer and longer as more kids are tagged and link arms with the chain.

● The game ends when all the kids are part of the chain.● If your room is getting too rowdy, give kids some rules:

○ Instead of running, have kids do slower (but fun) types of walking, like skipping, walking backwards, walking sideways, crawling, walking on their knees, scooting on their bottoms, army crawling on their bellies, crab walking, etc. (This applies to everyone, whether you’re in the chain or not!)

● Have a smaller group of kids?○ Have everyone only walk in ways that are slower, so the

game won’t be over so fast. For example, everyone (including the kids who are linked) have to crawl or hop. Or have only the kids that are link do a slower motion, while the kids running away can do a faster motion. Adapt as needed for your room!

● Play multiple rounds if you have time, then ask:○ What happened to the original “it”? ○ How is this like Abraham’s family?○ How did God keep his promise to Abraham?

TRANSITION● Say: Now let’s all get back into one large group. Everyone find a

place to sit by scooting there on your bottom!

*When the 10-minute timer is up, go back to Large Group.

Part 4 (Game Time)

Page 6: June 23-24 2018 Science Experiments: Abraham and Sarah49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp... · 2018. 6. 5. · keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and

GATHER IN ONE LARGE GROUP

Main Goal: Give kids a chance to respond to what they’ve heard today, and worship!

Supplies: None

Video: ● I Am Yours

● Lord We Lift Your Name High (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MYdbQytUy8)

Time: 10 minutes

Tip: There are two music videos; one is a motion video and one is a non-motion video. You can choose to play both, or choose one of them to fit the atmosphere of your room, and what you think kids will respond best to.

● Say: Let’s remember our BIG IDEA for today (ask any kids if they can remember it on their own): God ALWAYS keeps his promises to us.

● Say: That means that the coolest part of today’s story...is that God makes promises to YOU too! And he will always keep them!

● Say: Can anyone think of a promise that God has made to you/us right now? (Let kids respond; they may not know any on their own though, that’s okay!)

● Say: Here’s a few promises that we know God has made to us, because he tells us in the Bible!

○ In Deuteronomy 31:8, he tells us this: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” What promise is he making to us here? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he will always be with us, and he will never leave us.

○ In Romans 10:9, he says this: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” What promise do you hear there? (Let kids respond.) Yep, when we believe that Jesus is our rescuer, he forgives all our sins!

● Say: Guess what? These are just a few of the many MANY promises God makes to us, and we can be completely, totally, 100% sure that he will keep these promises no matter what.

● Say: Let’s thank God for this is by singing to him in worship. Everybody stand up, and try to follow along to this new music video. It’s a little different than normal; there’s someone explaining the motions as they do them, so try to get into it! (Lead by example and do the motions in front of/with kids.)

● Music Video: I Am Yours (Motions)● Music Video: Lord We Lift Your Name High● Pray: Close in prayer, or have a kid come up and pray.

SMALL GROUP CRAFT PREVIEW● Say: Before we go to Small Groups, let’s watch a quick video to

see what we’re going to make. In the video, you’ll see how to put together the craft, and then in Small Groups, you’ll be adding something extra special to it!

● Video: Star Craft TRANSITION

● Let’s see if you can do jumping jacks WHILE going to your group!

Part 5 (Large Group)

Page 7: June 23-24 2018 Science Experiments: Abraham and Sarah49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp... · 2018. 6. 5. · keeps his promises to us. Abraham believed this, and

SPLIT INTO SMALL GROUPS FOR THE REST OF THE HOUR.

Main Goal: Create a craft to help kids discuss and respond to today’s story.

Supplies: ● Markers (1 set/group)● Craft example images

(3/group)● ½ size Pipe cleaners

(3/kid)● Beads (approx. 25/kid)

○ Set out beads at tables, so kids can pick out beads themselves)

Time: 10 minutes (or until the end of the service)

Tip: You can ask the review questions at the beginning of Small Group, or DURING the activity.

*Keep kids in small group until parent pickup.

RESPOND TO THE STORY● Ask: Who remembers the special way God described how big

Abraham’s family would be? (He said Abraham’s family would be so big, they would outnumber all the stars in the sky.)

● Say: We’re going to create a star to remind us how God kept that special promise to Abraham, and how he keeps his promises to us too.

● Discuss:○ Tell kids to think of a promise God has made to them. It

can be something we heard in large group, or something different.

○ Encourage them to imagine God is sitting across from them and telling them a promise right now: what would he say?

● Next, give each kid pipe cleaners and set out beads. (Set out craft images to help kids visualize it.)

○ Take the three pipe cleaners and twist them together at the center, so it makes a 6 sided “star.”

○ String beads onto each side of the star.○ To make sure beads don’t fall off, bend the ends of the

pipe cleaners, so they hold the beads in place.

● Ask (ask while kids work):○ How do you think Abraham and Sarah felt while they

waited for God’s promise?○ How did God keep his promise to them?○ Have you ever had to wait for something? Tell us about it

(if they haven’t shared it already).○ Do you believe God makes promises to you? How do

you know he’ll keep them?○ Why are promises important? Why does it matter

whether you keep them or not?● Extra time? Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets

to work on until their parents pick them up.
