Miscellaneous observations, rec-ommendations, issues and what-have-yous worth considering or not this week in Nelson. Window Dressing: I love to wander around town and check out the window displays of Nelson businesses and entrepreneurs. There are the fanciful/whimsical displays at Bijoux on Ward Street and in the stand alone exhibit at the bus stop at Ward and Baker. In August, when Shambala comes to the Kootenays, Street-clothes Named Desire dresses up its windows on the wild side to reflect the festival’s spirit. In the residential areas, creative residents take their ‘window dressing’ outside with rooftop gargoyles and light displays. Up on Stanley Street, there’s rusted sculptured garden art and over in lower Fairview, behind the Safeway, there’s a fabulous driftwood garden gate. Rain or shine, it’s always worth a walk around town.

Raid the North Extreme (RTNX) is pleased to have the expertise and experience of BC Search and Rescue at this year’s event.

Members of Nelson Search and Rescue, Columbia Search and Rescue, Kaslo Search and Rescue, Rossland Search and Rescue as well as other volunteers will assist with technical aspects of the race as competitors travel through the West Kootenay region. A 24 year old New Jersey man was driving when he spotted a rattlesnake crossing the road. The man got out of his car to prevent the snake from being hit by oncoming vehicles. He then tried to pin the rattlesnake down with a stick — and the snake bit his hand.The man drove to a nearby state park where paramedics were called in.

Man Sets House On Fire Cleaning Foot Emergency personnel were

called Wednesday to a Florida home where a man accidentally started a fire with rubbing alco-hol and a cigarette.

The man told deputies he was sitting on his bed cleaning an infection on his foot with the alcohol when somespilled on the sheets, the man told authorities, and when his cigarette touched the spill, a fire started. He did not know why the cigarette con-tacted the bedclothes.

Another House And Home show on the way, as you like to do from time to time, this one has a theme, tell us about it. I am kind of revisiting my childhood a little bit. The first party I kicked off for my birthday was the star wars party, we had more costumes than Halloween apparently. I thought I’d continue with that and something that immediately suggested itself to me was Where The Wild Things Are, I think people of all ages have such a connection with it.

Can you tell us what your costume is going to be and how long did it take to make? My costume is going to be a Mini Max and I’d say about three hours.

There are prizes? Yeah, top prize is $100 cold hard cash in your hand, second and third are still in the works but there will be tickets to upcoming shows like Scientists of Sound.

For people that don’t know, what are the Scientists of Sound? What do they do? They are the best of both worlds, They are a live duo, sometimes trio, sometimes quad. They are basically performing live and looping live electronic dance music. They cover well-known and really loved artists like Dead Mouse, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers. If you can’t bring Daft Punk to Nelson, this is probably almost better, because we are bringing in a Canadian artist from Halifax to bring the energy and that’s where it’s at.

So is it all live instruments? {With the duo} they have a guitar, half a dozen synths and they bring their own visual show. I know one guy is sitting on stage with an electric guitar for sure. Sometimes, when they do play as a bigger group they do have a drummer and other live instruments as well.

Though only around for a for a few years, New York City’s Digable Planets left a mark in the early Nineties rap scene. Mixing old jazz samples with their positive messages, “Doodlebug”, “Butterfly” and female MC “Ladybug” created a unique, laid back sound that resonated with the masses.

Stoner-friendly yet smart, their debut “Reachin” in 1993 went Gold and won a Grammy for best Rap Performance, fitting in nicely with contemporaries De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest on the charts. The follow-up, “Blowout Comb” in 1994, also charted and featured guest spots from East Coast heavyweights Guru and Jeru Tha Damaja; it upped the funk samples and also featured themes like Black Power and social issues. Unfortunately, it was their “last gasp” - Ladybug quit the group over disputes over equal payment for her contribu-tions to both albums.

Still waving the flag, Doodle-bug and Butterfly continue to tour with a variety of female MCs and live musicians, bring-ing the Digital Planets message far and wide. For a dose of classic positive hip hop, don’t miss the show at Spiritbar - in their own words, Digable Planets are selling a “Nickle Bag of Funk”, and you should go buy one!

Electronic music seems to be making a push back into the mainstream in North America with festivals and bars alike booking more and more DJ’s, what do you attribute the resurgence in North America to? There have been some incredible artists, Dead Mouse and Chromeo who cross over to more main stream appeal but also I think a lot of what I would call Electronic Production Technique & Sounds have crossed over to producing pop music. A lot of these producers, again I go back to Dead Mouse who’s produced artists like Britney Spears under other names, start to bring that know how over, you get

that influence crossing over to the mainstream. I think its also getting away from the traditional DJ set up, two turntables and a mixer and turning into all kinds of unique setups. There is so much gear out there, you can set up any way you like. Scientists of Sound is a good example of that, they are basically performing electronic sound but they are actually making it right there in front of you as opposed to playing a concrete already finished article like a record or an MP3.

Nelson is known for musicians. There are a lot of people that are in bands and play in various forms of music and I’ve heard more than a few times that anyone can be DJ, its just pushing buttons, there is no soul. How do you respond to people when they mention that to you? *laughs* I agree with them anybody can be a DJ, but as with anyone can play the guitar and anyone can play the piano. I think its much easier now to get started. You don’t have to learn a lot of the things you had to learn like playing with vinyl - a lot of programs will do that work for you. I’ve read somewher “a truly great DJ would have made a great musician they just picked this instrument” and I agree with that. It takes years to develop musical taste and experience to develop how to play, how to shape a night, how to direct energy, how to focus energy, As with any instrument, some people have it some people don’t. Anyone can learn to press buttons, but the cream rises to the top.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). 2. In a medium bowl combine the cubed chicken, melted butter and hot sauce. Mix well. Spread whole bottle of salad dressing over crust, then top with chicken mixture and sprinkle with shredded cheese. 3. Bake in preheated oven until crust is golden brown and cheese is bubbly, about 5 to 10 minutes. Let set a few minutes before slicing, and serve.

What’s A Violin Worth? A rare Stradivarius violin that once belonged to the granddaughter of English poet Lord Byron sold for a record 9.8 million pounds ($15.9 million) at auction on Monday in a charity sale for Japanese disaster relief.

The 1721 violin was bought by an anonymous bidder for around four times the previous auction record for a Stradivari violin, according to Tarisio, the online auction house for fine instruments.

Proceeds from the sale will go to aid Japan after the recent natu-ral disasters through the Nippon Foundation’s Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.

The “Lady Blunt” was offered for sale by The Nippon Music Foundation, owners of some of the world’s finest Stradivari and Guar-neri instruments.

It is one of around 600 violins,

violas and cellos by the famed Ital-ian maker Antonio Stradivari still in existence, and among the finest examples.

The last time it was sold pub-licly was in 1971, when it fetched a then-record 84,000 pounds at Sotheby’s.

Stradivarius DefinedWikipedia: The name Stradivarius is associated with violins built by members of the Stradivari family, particularly Antonio Stradivari. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or reproduce, though this belief is controversial. The name “Stradi-varius” has become a superlative often associated with excellence; to be called “the Stradivari” of any field is to be deemed the finest there is. The fame of Stradivarius instruments is widespread.

ConstructionWhile Stradivari’s techniques have long been up for debate and not fully understood by modern craftsmen and scientists, it is known for certain that the wood used included spruce for the top, willow for the internal blocks and linings, and maple for the back, ribs, and neck. There has been conjecture that this wood was treated with several types of minerals, including potassium borate (borax), sodium and potassium silicate, and vernice bianca, a varnish composed of Gum arabic, honey, and egg white. He made his instruments using an inner form, unlike the French copyists, such as Vuillaume, who employed an outer form. It is clear from the number of forms throughout his career that he experimented with some of the dimensions of his instruments.

Controversy Over Sound Quality These instruments are famous for the quality of sound they produce. However, the many blind tests from 1817 to the present have never found any difference in sound between Stradivari’s violins and high-quality violins in comparable style of other makers and periods, nor has acoustic analysis. In a particularly famous test on a BBC Radio 3 program in 1977, the violinists Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman and violin expert Charles Beare tried to distinguish among the “Chaconne” Stradivarius, a 1739 Guarneri del Gesú, an 1846 Vuillaume, and a 1976 British violin played behind a screen by a professional soloist. None of the listeners identified more than two of the four instruments. Two of the listeners identified the 20th-century violin as the Stradivarius.

Directors of the Amy Ferguson Institute had good reason to break out the champagne last week. After more than two years of fundraising the Institute learned it had been awarded a major grant from the Vancouver Foundation that brought the total amount raised for the opera commission to just over the $100,000 target set by the Board for completion of all aspects of the opera project.

The AFI Directors had an equally important artist mile-stone to celebrate last week, the completion of the first draft of the entire score of the new opera.   “Our composer, Don Macdon-ald, put the final touches to his score on Wednesday of last week and we received the first fully bound scores from the printers on Friday,” Horswill announced.  

“We will be holding auditions for the chorus of KHAOS in late September and begin musical rehearsals in late October” said Horswill.  “Full staging rehears-als will begin in January 2012 leading to the premiere perfor-mances at the Capitol Theatre March 8th, 9th and 10th.   We are thrilled that Mr. Macdonald will be the music director for the premiere and Ms. Harwood will be the stage director”, Horswill added.
