Well-to-wheel efficiency of alternative fuels Range per year per m! of land
Biofuel: 7km
Hydrogen: 160km
Electric: 380km
A solar panel delivers 105 kWh/m!.
A solar panel delivers 105 kWh/m!.
After distribution, charging and storage in the battery, 77kWh is available to the motor.
An EV drives 5km/kWh, so 77kWh gives 380km range.
After electrolysis, compression and distribution 63kWh goes into the tank.
The fuel cell generates 31.5kWh of electricity. The vehicle drives 5km/kWh, so 31.5kWh gives 160km range.
Most efficient energy crops (palm oil, sugar cane) deliver 0.5L/m! including sowing, fertilizing, harvesting, refinement and distribution.
A vehicle drives 15km/L, so 0.5L gives 7km range.

Denza and ABB in China: DC Wallbox Press release on 13/02/2014
ABB is working on a number of projects with Car manufacturers in Europe and China on DC-Wallboxes of 10 and 20 kW. First production is in Q4-2014. The DC-Wallboxes will be supplied with the car We believe that due to the larger batteries of the BEV’s, home- and work-charging will move towards DC 10-20kW charging

Norway
! Highest amount of EV’s per inhabitant ! More than 14% of all new cars are BEV’s
! Well organized subsidizing rounds by Transnova for Charging Infrastructure projects
! Many different Electricity Suppliers (Utilities); 95% based on hydropower ! Quite some of them stepping up as local operator
! Issue: roaming between the different networks ! Some of them clustering into one Operator: “Grønn Kontakt”
! Owned by 23 power and electricity companies
What can we learn from Norway
© ABB Group September 24, 2014 | Slide 23
Norway – why so many BEV’s ?
! Incentives for EV‘s in Norway: ! Exemption from Initial Car Tax and VAT ! Access to the bus and taxi lanes ! Free pass in all of the country’s toll roads, ferries and congestion charge exemption ! Free municipal parking ! Annual fee of only 405 kr, ! 50% discount on company car tax, higher mileage allowance write-off when you have an
electric car (4.10 NOK per km) ! In many cases charging is free of charge ! Energy cost ca. 20% of comparable combustion engine cost ! Agreement with all parties in the parliament that the incentives will last at least until 2017
or when the sales exceeds 50.000 cars
! These exemptions can greatly reduce the price of the vehicle
Examples of advantages for BEV drivers
© ABB Group September 24, 2014 | Slide 24
Switzerland - Infrastructure
! One DC Fast Charger outlet for every 50 BEV’s (Rule of thumb)
! Charging locations every 40 - 50km (on major roads / highways).
! If more charging outlets are required: more chargers per charge location
! Depending on the expected car types: chose which charging standards must be chosen
! Near future: tendency towards 50kW in stead of 20kW for public charging
What can we learn from other countries / projects
© ABB Group September 24, 2014 | Slide 25
Conclusions & Lessons learned
! In some countries ! Players are stepping forward and rolling-out country-covering networks ! Battle on the locations is taking place in quite some countries
! Payment methods ! Actual status:
! Smartphone Apps, RFID,SMS (issue roaming) ! kWh also used as parameter ! Often two (or three) payment schemes: from light (non-frequent) to heavy
users
! Near Future: ! Debit card / Credit card (at eCarTec, 21-23 October 2014 in München)
© ABB Group September 24, 2014 | Slide 26
Conclusions & Lessons learned
! In fast charging it is all about reliability - reliability - reliability ! Remote diagnostics / remote curing (80% of cases solved remotely) ! Easy maintenance (fast replacement of modules) ! Quality and speed of the reaction of Service team ! Driver Care Solution (at eCarTec, 21-23 October 2014 in München)
! E-mobility is going fast in this world: ! Tesla is in the absolute top of best-selling luxury car in some countries ! Major car manufacturers (with combustion engine background) are worrying if
they will get enough return on their investments for plug-in hybrids ! Battery prices are dropping rapidly (1.000 EUR => 150? EUR/kWh) ! Rapid developments in China (volume factor 10-100 to Europe)
The question is who wants to take part in this race, who not"..
