My family went out for lunch this past week-end to a popular eatery.

My husband, who is very observant, noticed amother and two daughters sitting at a nearbytable. After 15-20 minutes he commented thatthe mom had been texting on her phone non-stop while her daughters chatted amongstthemselves.

He was even more appalled when the motherkept texting after the meal was served. "Socialmedia is anything but social," he commented.Rather than carry on a conversation face to faceand engage family members, this mom chose tochat electronically rather than talk one on onewith her daughters.

While folks of our generation, late forty some-thing and older, may frown upon this behav-iour, members of the 30 and 20 somethingsthink nothing of it. It's simply become a way oflife, whether they're using their IPhone, IPod,tablet, lap top, etc.

Even though these technological gadgets havebecome "essential" devices to conduct businessin our work a day world, should they overrideface to face communication?

Although my husband firmly believes in thevalue of face to face communication, there aremany who have opted to go the other route. But

I wonder that by going the other route, workand play, we aren't missing out on other valu-able opportunities to communicate? When youare fully immersed in technology you enteryour own world and shut out the outside worldand the people who are within hearing distance.By blocking out the people around you, I feelyou are sending a clear message that translatesinto don't divert my attention, don't bother meand don't interrupt me. If you do, you run therisk of being ignored, or not heard because youare trying to carry on a three way conversation.

Recently I spotted an article that pointed outthat while Facebook connects users with oldfriends, new acquaintances, and everyone inbetween, studies are starting to reveal an"inverse link with online connections and deep-er face to face relationships."

So maybe it isn't just a bunch of blarney fromus "old folks" who want to connect one on one.

According to the article Norwegianresearchers have recently developed a test fornetworking sites, called the Bergen FacebookScale, which likens inordinate amounts of timespent on the networking site to drug and alco-hol abuse. The test measures how often peopleuse the site, if they do so to forget their prob-lems, and how using the site negatively affects

their personal and working lives."When people abuse drugs and alcohol, they

are trying to feel better, but they are worseningtheir situation," stated psychologist Gregory L.Jantz, author of #Hooked: The Pitfalls of Media,Technology, and Social Networking. "We'refinding this is also true of for those who spendexcessive amounts of time on social networkingsites. Perhaps the hardest hit from social mediaaddiction is the family unit," added Jantz.

He recommended parents remember thatinteracting with children doesn't mean sitting inthe same room with them. He suggested limit-ing the amount of time of television, internet, social networking sites, cell phone, video andgaming systems. Jantz also recommended par-ents make a list of the good and bad conse-quences of technology use and compare thetwo, as well as considering changes that willturn negatives into positives.

"Increasingly, social networking infiltrates ourpersonal lives, but we need to remember that itis created to serve us, and not the other wayaround," stated Jantz.

I say, here here, and put those gadets down.

Even though it tookonly a few seconds tocut; it took years to grow.

But Alexandra Morsefelt much better aftereight inches of her hairwas cut off June 22.

Every year since shewas five, Alexandra hasbeen asking her momLaurie if her hair waslong enough to donate topatients undergoing can-cer treatments, but itwasn't until last Fridaythat the now 10-year-old's wish was granted.

For Alexandra, Laurie,

and other family mem-bers in attendance at the"No More HairMundare" event; it was avery emotional day, butone that held great sig-nificance.

It was back in 2008during a visit to seeAunty Christina in theoncology ward at anEdmonton hospital thatshe saw another littlegirl, about the same ageas she was, in the hall-way. The other little girlwas undergoing chemo-therapy and had lost allher hair.

Laurie said it was the"shock" of seeing that

other little girl thatprompted many ques-tions, and later,Alexandra's desire todonate her hair to some-one else going throughtreatment.

Laurie said the eventwas "overwhelming;"but was so proud ofAlexandra, and all of herschoolmates, staff, andcommunity memberswho either had their haircut or head shaved lastFriday. Altogether therewere nine students, twostaff members, and sixadults who had theirtresses snipped andshaved off, in the

process, they raised closeto $2,300 for theCanadian Cancer Society.

"It's such an amazingsmall town," addedLaurie, who couldn'thelp but shed a few tearsduring the event.

"It, (cancer) has hit usall," said Laurie, whosebeen personally affectedby cancer. She has hadcancer herself, and caredfor her ailing sisterChristina until shepassed away. For a year, she travelled back andforth by plane every twoweeks to look after hersister.

"I can't say enough

about the staff," saidLaurie, who supportedher and her familythroughout her sister'streatment. They saidprayers, offered encour-agement, and gaveAlexandra extra hugsduring the difficult days.

School secretary LisaMcNeely said it was col-league Jason Lafrancewho convinced her tohave her head shaved. When Lisa told her momPat about the fundraiser, she was more than will-ing to have her headshaved too.

Alexandra's godpar-ents Carla and Mike

Meller were also on handfor the event. "Carla'sbeen cancer free for 12years," said Mike.Alexandra's grandmoth-er Margaret, and heryounger sister Jordanwere also in attendance.U n f o r t u n a t e l y ,Alexandra's father Darcycouldn't come in person,but there were more thanenough shutterbugs inthe crowd to snap pho-tos.

The gymnasium wasfilled as students, staff, and community mem-bers shared in the specialevent complete withsmiles, tears, and cheers.

As crops in the Lamont area start togrow and another hail season getsunder way, high commodity prices andinput costs are raising the stakes forfarmers this year, says Chris Dyck, with Agriculture Financial ServicesCorporation (AFSC), Alberta’s provin-cial crop insurer.

“Hail is a threat every growing sea-son in Alberta because we have one ofthe highest incidences of hail in theworld. But when crop prices andinputs like fertilizer and seed climb ashigh as they are now – at well-aboveaverage levels – hail becomes an evengreater concern for farmers becausethey have so much invested in theground,” says Dyck, senior manager ofbusiness risk management operationsfor AFSC. The Crown corporation pro-vides the majority of hail insurance tofarmers across Alberta on behalf of theprovincial government.

“Now is when many farmers startthinking about hail because as soon astheir crops emerge from the soil, they’re vulnerable,” says Dyck. Hepoints out hailstorms in late-May andearly June have already triggered sev-eral claims under the AFSC StraightHail program this spring in southernAlberta. Last year, the first StraightHail claim happened on June 4 in thePeace region.

“Crops have an amazing ability torebound from early season hail dam-age,” says Dyck. “However, those earlystorms do often result in reduced plantstands and yields. The later hail strikesin the growing season, the greater thedamage,” he adds, “because onceplants have podded or headed out –usually by mid-July – it’s too late forrecovery.”

AFSC paid out just over $25.5 millionlast year on nearly 1,500 Straight Hailclaims across the province, includingLamont County. The most severe dam-age was caused by two major hail-storms – one in early July that torethrough crops from Sundre to RedDeer – and a second one on July 18 thatcut a wide swath through fields fromMillet to Saskatchewan. Several small-er storms also peppered crops with hailin almost every region of the province.

“Last year was a good example of thefact that hail strikes everywhere inAlberta, not just in the highest risk areaknown as Hail Alley that stretchesfrom Calgary to Edmonton, along theHighway 2 corridor,” says Dyck, adding 2011 was an average hail yearfor Alberta.

What kind of hail season lies ahead

this summer is anybody’s guess, hesays. “If it’s wet and warm, we usually

get more hail. If it’s dry, there’s gener-ally less hail. But the weather canchange so quickly, it’s impossible topredict,” he says, referring to the dryconditions experienced in 2009. “Partsof the province did end up gettingmoisture that summer, and we had haillosses of more $30 million.”

Jonathan Hofer, who farms 5,000acres of wheat, barley, and canola nearHolden, says his crops have been hit byhail five years in a row. “Last July wasone of the worst storms I’ve seen. Thestones were golf ball size, and the cropwas perfect,” says Hofer. It wiped out450 acres of his canola and wheat. “Assoon as I see the canola coming up inJune and the moisture looks good, I puton hail coverage. With our overheadcosts so high, we have to.”

An increasing number of farmers areelecting to take out Straight Hail cover-age in April with their crop insurance –before their fields are even planted –qualifying them for a 2 per cent premi-um discount, says Dyck. “It’s an optionwe started offering two years ago forproducers who want protection theinstant their seeds are in the ground –rather than waiting for their crops toemerge and risk early hail damage,” hesays, explaining crops that suffer more

than 25 per cent hail damage beforebeing insured with Straight Hail cover-

age becomei n e l i g i b l efor AFSChail insur-ance untilthe nextg r o w i n g

season. “It’s a risk manyfarmers want to avoid,”says Dyck.AFSC Mandate

AFSC has been provid-ing hail insurance toAlberta farmers onbehalf of the provincialgovernment for morethan 70 years. It all start-ed when the provincepassed special legislationin 1938 creating theAlberta Hail InsuranceBoard. The original hailprogram offered by theHail Board still existstoday and is adminis-tered by AFSC.

“Until the Hail Boardwas established, therewere farmers in Albertawho didn’t have accessto hail insurance. That’sbecause private insurersweren’t able to provide

hail insurance in all areas of theprovince due to the high level of riskinvolved,” says Dyck. “Hail is riskybusiness, and our mandate as a provin-cial insurer today is the same as it wasback then – to provide hail insurance tofarmers in every corner of the province, even in the highest risk townships.”
