Grad marks end at RobsonGrant [email protected]

End-of-school traditions have been casualties of the teachers strike, but parents at John Robson elementary kept one alive. Every year Grade 7s graduating from Robson have been treated to a trip to the water slides at Cultus Lake and another to Loon Lake Camp north of Maple Ridge. Those were cancelled because of the strike. But their parents made sure the last group to graduate from Robson before it falls to the wrecking ball weren’t deprived of a third tradition.

That would be the annual grad ceremony. This one, though, wasn’t at the school.

Isabel Downey said a group of parents were chatting earlier this month, bemoaning the loss of the three milestone events the students had been anticipating all year.

There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears in Steel & Oak.

Money too.As well as sleepless nights, hours

completing paperwork, anxiety over faltering equipment.

In fact, getting New Westminster’s first craft brewery up and running has been such a harrowing, roller coaster experience, Jorden Foss and Jamie Garbutt would do it all over again.

In the pull of a tap.Even as the duo, along with

brewmaster Peter Schulz, prepared to welcome the general public to their tasting room for the first time on Tuesday, there were complications.

The sign was finally going up on the front of their building next to the Third Avenue overpass after languishing for months in city building codes and red tape. The CO2 system to power their taps broke down.

It’s been so busy Foss, Garbutt

and Schulz have barely had time to taste the ferment of their labours.

But if the buzz on social media, the response at local pubs with

their initial brews on tap, and the lineup out the door of members of their Founders’ Club getting an early preview last

weekend are any indication, they’ll enjoy every hoppy drop.

The journey from a couple of buddies with a taste for craft beer and an idea to opening the first

brewery in New West since Labatt closed its giant plant in Sapperton has taken Foss and Garbutt almost a year.

Much of that time was spent wading through four levels of government bureaucracy and spending money without any revenues coming back into the business.

“The biggest shock is the sticker prices for equipment,” said Foss, who gave up his job in audio production to dedicate himself full-time to the brewery.

SPECIAL NOTICE: YOUR ELECTRIC METER AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW On a regular basis a government mandated change-out of your meter is done. This program is in compliance with the federally regulated Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.

The program is in place to ensure fair measure for all customers in regards to the energy they consume. Meters are sent to a government accredited agency to be inspected and tested for accuracy.

In the event that an exchange is required on your meter, which is a random selection process done by the accredited testing agency, an authorized contractor will attempt direct contact with you by knocking on the door or ringing the bell. At this time they will advise on the nature of the work being done and provide identifi cation as requested. If there is no answer, the required work will be done. Your power will be briefl y interrupted, and you will need to check your electrical appliances and reset any electrical equipment.

At the present time the City has no immediate plans to introduce Smart Meters. Replacement meters will be basic digital manual read or electromechanical type meters. The City is reviewing its current meter inventory and considering all available options to meet the City’s future needs.

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact Electrical Operations at 604-515-3750, Mon - Fri, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

LAWN SPRINKLING REGULATIONSLawn sprinkling regulations are in eff ect annually from June 1 - September 30.  The intent is for watering to take place in the early morning hours, when demand is low and evaporation is minimal.  The policy aff ects both residential and non-residential areas, and the permitted watering hours are summarized below:

1. Newly turfed or seeded lawns may be irrigated more frequently, provided a permit stipulating conditions are fi rst obtained from the Engineering Department.

2. Hand-watering of fl owers, shrubs and vegetable gardens is not aff ected by the regulations at this stage.

3. Car washing using a hose equipped with a spring loaded shut-off device is permitted.

Your cooperation will help save water and reduce the risk of more severe restrictions.  Remember, your lawn only needs about 1-inch of water (about 1 hour of sprinkling) per week to stay healthy.

If you require more information, please contact Engineering Operations at 604-526-4691.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Submits plans to city to build $14.4 million expansion next to Robson ManorGrant [email protected]

Like New Westminster, Urban Academy’s density is growing and it needs to find a way to house it.

The private school has submitted plans to the city to build an expansion behind its current base of operation at Third Street and Royal Avenue. The budget is $14.4 million, and includes the purchase of an eight-unit apartment building on Manitoba Street built in the 1950s.

It would be demolished to make room for the expansion.

The plan is to build a 44,600-square-foot facility next to historic Robson Manor, a 10,000-square-foot 1935 heritage house which Urban bought in 2006. It currently houses the school’s administration and early grades. The expansion would include an 8,900-square-foot gym, three storeys of classrooms and underground parking.

The school currently has 160 students from kindergarten

to Grade 12. Grades 6 to 12 students, however, are taught in a space leased from the Royal City Christian Church at Sixth Street and Eighth Avenue.

Urban Academy estimates by the time the expansion is built it will have 250 students and will grow to 450 by 2022 with two classes per grade every school year.

“We’re growing and we’re outgrowing Robson Manor,”

said Robson head of school Cheryle Beaumont, former New Westminster secondary principal and Langley school district superintendent. “We’ve met our enrolment targets every year for the last three years. Every year we’ve set to double the class we’ve doubled the class.”

Beaumont said the school has thrived because it appeals to families looking for a solid and rigorous education that is arts

based. “We’ve created a culture.” She added its growth won’t

necessarily be helped by the current discord in public education.

Urban Academy and the city will have to agree on a heritage plan that would retain and restore the exterior, and some interior elements of Robson Manor before the expansion can proceed. Heritage guidelines say the new

building should be compatible, distinguishable and respectful of Robson Manor. A city staff report to council said the initial plans meet those criteria.

It also identified student drop-off and pick-up as an issue that needs to be addressed because 60 per cent of Urban Academy’s students live outside New Westminster.

The school is willing to provide the current tenants in the apartment building at least six months’ notice. It’s also willing to consider relocation compensation, rent reduction and relocation assistance.

The report by the school’s consultants said the expansion will be 70 per cent bank financed and 30 per cent from parent equity and a community bond.

A neighbourhood open house on the proposal is expected to be held either this summer or in the fall. A presentation will also be made to the Queen’s Park Residents Association. A public hearing isn’t likely to be held until late this year or early 2015.

An initial project schedule has construction starting in March 2015 and occupancy by August 2016.

“You can’t buy used equipment anymore because craft brewing is so popular.”

To start, Steel & Oak has four 1,700-litre stainless steel fermenting tanks, but they’re already planning to expand with two more 5,100-litre tanks en route. They’re also awaiting delivery of eight 200-litre oak barrels to bring a different flavour

to some of their beers.Foss said Steel & Oak’s

business plan was built on producing 50,000 litres of beer a year, but they’ll likely double or triple that. A bottling line will be added in the fall.

Since the tanks were installed in the back garage of a former auto body shop, brewmaster Schulz has been experimenting with recipes that will bring a unique

experience to the booming craft beer scene. One of those is a red pilsner. Another is a smoked Hefeweizen.

“We’re able to play around a bit more,” said Foss. “For us it’s more about finding a niche with different styles of beers.”

Setting up in their hometown has also created opportunities for Foss and Garbutt. Almost every pub in the city is eager to get their

beer on tap. They’re already in three and more are scheduled to take delivery of their kegs.

But with that comes more than a little pressure to live up to expectations.

“There’s no point in our lives we’ll ever be more popular,” said Foss. “But then that weighs on you. People are relying on us. They want to be proud of us.”

Just as Foss and Garbutt are

proud to be bringing a brewery back to New West.

“We want people to say this is the best beer around, and it’s from New West,” said Foss.

• Steel & Oak is located at 1319 Third Ave., below the Third Ave. overpass. The tasting lounge is open every day but Monday, from noon to 8 p.m., and until 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

ARTIST RENDERING/CONTRIBUTEDUrban Academy plans to purchase an eight-unit building behind their current facility at Robson Manor for an expansion project that would allow the school to have all its classes at one location.

So instead of grumbling the parents decided to do something about it. Parent advisory council (PAC) chair Serena Trachta told them that while the field trips were out of the question maybe they could still cobble together a grad ceremony. The PAC provided some funds for it and Downey and fellow parents Kim Nezezon and Jeannie Chown hit the phones for the rest.

The community came through. La Perla Ballroom at River Market provided the space, Stefano’s restaurant and Safeway the food, and Starbucks the coffee, all at big discounts.

“It’s kind of nice local businesses are willing to help out these students missing out on these activities,” said Downey.

About 30 students, two striking teachers and an

educational assistant came to the ceremony along with about 90 friends and family Monday afternoon.

“The ceremony turned out lovely,” said Downey. “The parents were really appreciative.

“These children have been affected by the strike action. The strike affects [everyone], but this is a milestone year for them and we hope we were able to help with some closure on their elementary years.”

Ceremony ‘turned out lovely’⫸ continued from FRONT PAGE

Two New Westminster seniors fell victim to phone scams on the same day last week.

Police said in one case the victim got a call June 19 from a man saying he was his son and needed money to pay for damages from an accident he’d had after a rock concert in Victoria. The man said he was going to send a friend to meet the victim to get the money.

Police said the victim went to an Uptown bank and withdrew “a significant amount of cash” and gave it to the so-called friend at a nearby place.

The victim spoke with his actual son later that day and

found out he’d never asked for the money. Police have requested surveillance video from the area.

In the second incident, the victim got a call from a man claiming to be her grandson. The man said he needed money to pay for damages from a car crash in Victoria.

She was also told to meet a friend of the grandson, who would deliver the money to him.

The next day she talked to her grandson and realized she’d been the victim of fraud.

The first suspect is described as a South Asian male, about 35, 5’8” wearing a maroon

shirt and tinted prescription sunglasses. The other was a black man about 25 who went by the name of Brian. He was 6’2” to 6’4” and wearing a black leather jacket with pockets that snapped shut, black dress pants, black shoes and jewelry.

The NWPD is advising seniors to verify the identity of people claiming to be their relatives over the phone and asking for money. If unsure they should call the police department at 604-525-5411. Anyone with any information should ask for Const. Shannon McLeod or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Whoa there, young fella. What’s the rush?

That might be the thought running through Mayor Wayne Wright’s mind these days.

It’s still almost five months until the November civic election, and already Jonathan Coté, the councillor who announced his intentions last week, wants his job.

Wright’s been mayor since 2002. This is his fourth term. Notably, in the last election in 2011 he said something along the lines of “Just give me one more term, folks. There’s a couple things I’d like to get done (Pier Park, Anvil Centre). Then, I’ll step aside.”

More recently, before Coté made his official announcement, Wright said his plans depended upon who was in the race. His concern, he said, was leaving the city in ill-suited hands. He wanted to ensure things kept moving in the right (Wright?) direction.

Whatever happens this fall, Coté and Wright are different animals in many ways.

Wright has been New West’s best cheerleader for the last 12

years, pumping its tires all day. When it was down, he cheered. And now that it’s rising, he hasn’t stopped, only now it’s like See? What did I tell you?

He’s got charm, he leads with his heart and he gets things done.

Coté’s a quieter, less ebullient sort. While he lacks Wright’s mega-watt charisma, he inspires confidence with the way he’s diligent, well-studied on the issues, and weighs his words carefully.

Under Wright’s tenure the city has focused on re-shaping New West as a double-edged city: strong on history but progressive and modern in policy (housing, homelessness) and infrastructure (Pier Park, Anvil Centre).

For his part, Coté has his finger on the pulse of progressive cities, having studied some of the best, most innovative things cities are doing, as a city councillor

and through his SFU urban studies coursework. If anything, he’d seek to extend on what Wright started.

In that way, it’s hard to imagine a better successor for Wright.

But hey, that’s still almost five months off.

If I were in Wright’s shoes, leaving the mayor’s chair would be the last thing I’d want to do.

Look at the guy—he’s having the time of his life. He may be 70-ish now, but he looks healthy and has an unfailing passion for the city. With the new Pier Park, plans next year to dismantle half the parkade and the recent rezoning of the massive Larco parking lot on the river, his long-term vision for regaining the waterfront is coming together.

And what job could measure up to city building?

No, it’s doubtful he’s ready to leave. But leave he will.

Why announce now, though? What’s the fun in that?

No one wants to be a lame duck. As soon as he says the words, he’ll be treated differently.

“Been a pleasure working with you, sir…”

“It’s July, you insolent

whippersnapper! I’m here ’til the swearing in of my successor. That could be December!”

So he’ll keep us guessing.Meantime, Coté isn’t wasting

time. As he did when he first ran for city council in 2005, he’s raising the bar in this city for campaigning. He’s got a splashy website with a promo video, he’s unveiled the planks of his platform, and his volunteers have already been out on the streets.

In 2005, I recall seeing Coté and his supporters out early one morning near the onramp to the Queensborough Bridge waving and holding up Coté signs, which highlighted the “X” for his middle name Xerxes—so easy to remember on election day.

The original Xerxes the Great, incidentally, ruled Persia back around 486 BC or so.

The name means “Ruling over heroes.”

He came to power at the tender age of 36, just a few months older than Coté is now.

By historical accounts, Xerxes took over from his father.

And the transition, so it is written, was a smooth one.

Will it be a Coté-Wright matchup?

Science deficit

Two weights, two measures.Whichever is more convenient. At least that is how it seems

Prime Minister Stephen Harper deals with science, scientists and their advice.

What other explanation can there be for Harper saying in a CBC interview, “it’s a tragedy when people start to go off on their own theories and not listen to scientific evidence,” in reference to parents who for various reasons do not allow their children to receive immunization shots

Let’s take a pause to let that bit of irony sink in.

Harper has consistently worked to eliminate or, at the very least, impede the development of scientific research, eliminate the objectivity of science from any debate by muzzling scientists, cutting budgets and just plain ignoring their findings and advice. More than 2,000 government scientists have lost their jobs over the past five years.

The overall effect is less science being done, fewer scientists to tell the public of the importance or implications of their work.

Canada’s fiscal deficit may shrink a bit, but our knowledge deficit grows.

Facts can be problematic, a nuisance, a hinderance, especially when he has an agenda and the only thing between Harper and the realization of his agenda is science.

Knowledge of our environment, and the deplorable condition it is in, is particularly troubling for Harper’s agenda.

So gone is most of the funding for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, as well as for the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, and the Experimental Lakes Area.

If we don’t know how mismanaged and mistreated the environment is, then we won’t have to lie awake worrying.

COMMENT

Re: Should we risk inviting people Uptown? (Column, NewsLeader, June 6)

When you talk Uptown, you need to be specific as to which part.

The area between Fifth and Sixth avenues on Sixth Street has very different dynamics than locations south or north of that block.

To my knowledge, the seating arrangements near Starbucks were changed specifically to deter smoking and “loitering” at the main entrance to the mall.

North of Sixth Avenue on Sixth Street has no such issues that I am aware of, and south of Fifth Avenue is totally different too.

So my comments here are about a specific part of Uptown.

Loitering, i.e. “the act of remaining in a particular public place for a protracted time without an apparent purpose” is to be distinguished from getting to know one’s neighbours or enjoying the space.

New Westminster has its fair share of people challenged by mental illness, addiction, and homelessness. The Sixth Street and Belmont locus is an area many of them frequent, whereas years ago Downtown New Westminster was experiencing this phenomenon.

I agree that more public spaces are a good idea, but any initiative in that direction should be coupled with additional resources for serving some of the hurting people we see in the area.

The Lookout Emergency Aid Society’s has excellent outreach programs in New West, thanks in large part to the efforts of Dave Brown, who I understand is stepping up activity in Uptown as much as he can.

More resources for Dave and his programs such as “i’s on the Street” would be a good idea.

A LESSON IN COMPROMISERe: A letter from a parent (Letters, NewsLeader, June 11)

I admire Fraser Barton and the students for standing up for what they believe regardless of what it might cost.

If these students understand what “compromise” means, why can’t the adults really understand what it means?

Are we teaching them “My way or no way”?

Here is short example of compromise:

During the 1980s, the president of the company where I was working called a meeting

and explained our financial status.

There were two options he offered: layoffs or forgo our yearly wage increase for a couple of years.

Which one do you think we chose?

As a single mother with two daughters, it was hard to forgo the yearly wage increase.

But we sacrificed our personal needs for the good of the many. Compromise.

We keep on saying that young people are our future.

So why can’t the teachers and the government negotiate, and compromise for the good of the students?

If there are concessions to give up—give them up to end this fiasco.

It is a two-way street.Teachers and

government, please come to your senses for the good of the students and their future.

Minister says too much being sought from Ottawa, VictoriaJeff NagelBlack Press

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said he’s prepared to authorize a referendum next year on creating a new regional carbon tax for TransLink – provided Metro Vancouver mayors confirm by July 15 they want to hold one.

Stone gave a formal response to the mayors’ call for new TransLink funding sources Tuesday, reiterating the province’s refusal to reallocate any existing carbon tax revenue.

But he also said the mayors’ ambitious transit expansion plan asks for too much, too quickly, in terms of federal and provincial government contributions.

He said the plan’s expectation of $1.5 billion over 10 years from Ottawa is $500 million more than the federal government’s entire Building Canada program allocation for B.C. and Stone indicated it may be too much to expect a similar amount from the province as well.

“The funding assumptions don’t add up and call into question whether or not the plan is realistic,” Stone said.

He said that could be resolved

by extending the investment time frame from 10 years to 20 years to spread out the demand on senior governments.

Otherwise, he said, the mayors might have to contemplate either shelving some priorities or else raising more money within the region.

The mayors’ plan aims to invest $7.5 billion into

new rapid transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver, a major bus system expansion, a replacement of the Pattullo Bridge and other projects.

Their preferred funding method was a reallocation of carbon tax on the short term – or a new carbon tax if the province refused reallocation – followed by a shift to yet-to-be-defined system of mobility pricing in several years time.

As for the government’s appetite to introduce mobility pricing – which could involve per kilometre road tolls – Stone reiterated the province is prepared to discuss that. But he noted it would be challenging to embark on major new transit system upgrades until there’s certainty on how a mobility pricing system would work.

Stone also rejected the mayors’ request for a 50 per cent provincial contribution on new

capital and operations costs for HandyDart, noting that’s always been TransLink’s sole responsibility in the past.

“Substantially, this would appear to be a

good plan,” Stone said, adding “a bit more work” is needed to determine how it will be financed.

If mayors agree to hold the referendum sometime next spring,

Stone said the wording of the question would not have to be decided until this fall.

Although the mayors have consistently opposed further increases in property

tax over and above the extra three per cent lift TransLink is automatically permitted each year, Stone once again pointed them back to that option.

Transit plan doesn’t add up on funding: Stone

A Vancouver-based band and a Texas rock group will headline this year’s Uptown Live street festival.

They’ll be the feature acts for the third annual festival in Uptown New Westminster on Sunday, Aug. 10.

“Without a doubt this is our best lineup yet,” said Bart Slotman, chair of Uptown Business Association, which is organizing the festival. “We couldn’t be happier with the calibre of performers we have attracted.”

Five Alarm Funk plays original music that’s a mix of Afro-beat, funk, rock, Latin and hip-hop. It’s a nine-member group that recently released its fifth album with a concert at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver.

Its fourth album, Rock the Sky, was nominated for a 2013 Juno Award as instrumental album of the year.

The Bright Light Social Hour is based out of Austin, Texas. They call themselves

a “psychedelic southern rock band.” They combine Southern rock, hard dance, psychedelic blues and deep soul into their music.

Other feature artists include Rykka, BESTiE, Jordan Klassen, The Matinee and Ash Grunwald, an Australian independent phenom.

The lineup on the three stages will also include Headwater,

Pacifika, Santa Lucia, Redeye Empire, Halfway to Hollywood, Rich Hope and the Blue Rich Rangers, and Ben Rogers.

Previous Uptown Live festivals followed the Hyack International Parade in May and were done in conjunction with the Hyack Festival Association. UBA has decided to host it separately as a standalone festival.

Uptown Live releases festival lineup

Five Alarm Funk is a nine-piece band that performs a mix of everything from Afro-beat to rock. The band’s album Rock the Sky was recently nominated for a Juno Award.

Safety Tip:As the summer BBQ season and Canada Day celebrations kick off, it’s important to remember how deadly of a combination drinking and driving can be. Arrange for

a designated driver or use other options to get home safely.

Question of the WeekBob McHugh in his review of the Lincoln MKC reveals there is a new technology called “park out assist” which gets your vehicle out of the tight parking sport that the “park assist” shoehorned you into! Is this kind of technology in danger of diminishing a driver’s control skills?

Lincoln luxury at a non-premium priceSanta Barbara, Calif. - The MKC is the first (luxury) compact utility vehicle from Lin-coln and, while related, it’s very different from the Ford Escape. Development of both vehicles started with Ford’s global “C” platform, but other than its base 2.0 litre turbo-engine, the MKC has little else in common with its Ford counterpart. All-wheel-drive is standard (in Canada) on all three editions of the MKC and a start price just under $40,000 is also inviting compared to other luxury CUVs such as the Acura RDX ($41,390) and BMW X3 ($42,800). (A top-line Ford Escape, by the way, is listed at $35,699). The MKC is the second of four all-new product launches intended to redefine Lincoln. The first being the Lincoln MKZ last year, an all-new MKX is expected next year and a, so-far unnamed, full-sized sedan will follow. The new Lincoln styling theme includes smooth clean lines a slick shape (described as “graceful ath-leticism”) and up front, there’s a contemporary take on the traditional Lincoln split-wing grille.Another eye-catching feature of the MKC is around back, a huge wraparound lift gate includes full-width LED rear lighting assemblies. This unique one-piece hydro-formed steel door opens like a clamshell and allows complete access to the cargo area. An optional hands-free feature also allows it to open with a kick-ing motion below the rear bumper. The MKC also has a roomy feel to its interior, particu-larly for front seat occupants. A dash that slants away, towards the windshield, adds to its airy ambiance. It’s also a much quieter cabin than its stable mate, with numerous built-in sound deadening features that in-clude a noise control system that eliminates unwanted sound waves and enhances others. Available inside accent trims include brushed alumi-num or open-pore Zebrano and Santos Rosewood that

can be matched with standard, made in Scotland, Bridge of Weir “Deepsoft” leather upholstery. The premium car ex-perience actually starts as you approach the MKC with an accent welcoming lighting feature that’s automatically ac-tivated (by the key fob) when an owner is within 2.4 metres (8-ft). Our 320-kilometre-plus route took us away from the coast along the scenic Jacento Reyes Byway. This lightly trav-elled twisty two-lane road gets narrow in sections. It also presented some spectacular vistas along the way and some intimidating cliff faces and rock formations.I was impressed with the MKC’s predict-able handling characteristics through the twisty sections. It was stable, very forgiving at higher speeds and generally more agile than expected for a utility

vehicle - especially after I finally figured out how to set-up the driving modes, called Lincoln Drive Control. The normal, comfort and sport settings for the sus-pension and steering are preset (via vehicle settings on the instrument panel and customizable to a limited extent) by a driver to function with “D” and “S” transmission selections. It’s a different and somewhat complex way of providing this feature. Push-button transmission selection is another feature that I wouldn’t get excited about. I get the space-sav-ing functionality and the historic connection to Lin-coln, but still prefer a shift lever. Manual operation of the transmission’s six speeds can be done via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The shifts, however, could be crisper and the system tends to be very pro-tective of the engine (over-revving) on downshifts. Only MKC vehicles with the new 2.3-litre twin-scroll turbo engine were available to drive at this U.S. event, which would price tag them close to $50,000 in Can-ada. An impressively smooth and quiet performer (in this application) this engine can produce 285-horse-

power compared to the base 2.0-litre’s 240-horsepow-er, which is the top engine in an Escape. As you might expect, the 2.0L engine gets better fuel economy, but the difference is minimal and both can run on regular grade fuel. All the latest driver-assist technologies are avail-able with MKC including, adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system, blind-sport alert, cross-traffic alert and park assist, with a unique new wrinkle... park-out assist. This added feature can now auton-omously steer that MKC out of that tight parallel parking spot into which it put the MKC! Lincoln may be a little late in joining the booming compact luxury utility club, but the MKC is certainly an impressively well put-together new member and it’s priced to sell.

Odyssey a very clean machineBy Ian HarwoodDriveway

The 2014 Honda Odyssey is ready to take you on your next big messy adventure with the kids and it can help you clean up too. The van features the world’s first in-car vacuum system called the HondaVac. It comes complete with a replaceable filter, canister bag, nozzle accessories, and a hose capable of reaching the front seats. I feel a family email coming on. My sister-in-law Cristina has an Odyssey van and has been transporting a full size shop vac and leaf blower around for years. My two nieces make quite a mess, unlike my tidy offspring. Just kidding. But before we get into an interior clean-up, let’s cast

an eye over the vehicle’s exterior looks. It has a stylish hood that sweeps down towards the grille. The headlights are angled up and back giving the profile a sculpted look. Honda refers to the overall design as a lightning bolt. Not only does it provide an exclusive appearance, but also adds increased visibil-ity for third row passengers.Very nice interior, every-thing laid out nicely. So many bells and whistles you almost would want to run through a checklist before driving. Eight-passenger seating with a total pas-senger volume of 4,887 litres, whatever, that means. And all those passengers get thirsty so Honda put in 15 cup holders. The third row is a one-motion 60/40

split ‘Magic’ seat that can accommodate three passengers and still leave 1,087 litres of cargo volume – that’s room for a lot of slushies for later in the journey. The second row is a 3 mode seating with fold down center console. Driver and front passenger seats are captain’s chairs that are very comfortable. My tester included a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, channel selector, cruise control, and hands-free telephone button. The instrument panel is easier to read, thanks

to a little tweaks by the engineers. Satellite-linked Navigation screen with trilingual voice recognition, 3D map and FM traffic is also available that uses GPS technology and a 60GB hard drive based operating system that provides the driver with turn-by-turn voice guidance to their chosen destination. Both side sliding doors open automatically via the key fob or a switch on the dash. A 270-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/Windows Media audio playback and seven speak-

ers including a subwoofer is standard, with a 650-watt and 12-speaker version also available. Safety is paramount with mini-van owners; the Odys-sey earned a 2013 IIHS top safety pick and is the only minivan with a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. All models receive a 6-speed automatic trans-mission. The combination makes the drive that much more com-fortable and enjoyable.

Teacher pickets will target locations where summer school is being carried out if they don’t have a settlement of their strike by June 30.

B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker announced that decision Wednesday, as he prepared for the first meeting

with B.C. Public School Employers’ Association since a full-scale strike began June 17.

The meeting has been characterized as “exploratory talks” dealing with possible mediation.

BCPSEA has applied to the Labour Relations Board for summer school

offerings to be declared essential services, if they

are “secondary remedial programs provided to students who have failed a secondary level course.”

Summer programs for elementary

school students, international students or

secondary students trying to improve a passing grade would not be protected by an LRB order, meaning the majority of summer programs wouldn’t go ahead.

Iker said the union is also considering the plight of B.C.’s five modified calendar schools, which have three month-long breaks instead of the

traditional summer vacation.

They are in the middle of their final three-month term and are facing more disruption than other schools.

BCPSEA has also applied for essential service protection so they can resume operation.

Iker said if there is no deal by June 30, BCTF

negotiators would be available to continue talks, rather than take the summer off as they have done in previous disputes.

The two sides remain far apart on wages and benefits, with a long-running dispute over class size and special needs support levels going back to court this fall.

Bosa Properties brothers Colin and Dale Bosa will headline New Westminster’s second economic forum.

The 2014 Invest New West will be held in the new Anvil Centre’s conference centre Oct. 2. The Bosas, who run Bosa Properties and BlueSky Properties, will be the keynote speakers and will do a question-and-answer session with co-chair Gary Pooni.

Bosa Properties currently has a two-tower project proposal before city council for 1000 Quayside Drive, the parking lot in front of Inn at the Quay. If approved it will connect to Downtown via the McInnes

Overpass. BlueSky is nearing completion of Viceroy in Uptown New Westminster.

Realtor Bob Rennie was the keynote speaker at the first economic forum held in November 2012.

The opening speaker in October will be Andrew Ramlo, executive director of Urban Futures which does urban economic analysis. He will be followed by a panel discussion with New Westminster city manager Lisa Spitale, Merchant Square office tower co-owner Suki Sekhon and Overwaitea Food Group president Darrell Jones.

Pooni, president of Brook Pooni Associates, said attendees will get key insights into why New Westminster is a strategic

location for business opportunity and growth.

Invest New West is being put on by the City of New Westminster and the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. It will be the first civic

event to be held at the new Anvil Centre. The previous forum was a sold-out event of 300 and was held at the River Market. Co-chair Bill Harper said just under 400 is expected to attend this time.

The City of New Westminster’s planning division has won a silver award of excellence from the Planning Institute of B.C.

The award recognizes the city’s rental housing policy which has generated several

applications for new rental housing since it was instituted.

“It’s creating a positive change in the supply of long-term rental housing in New Westminster,” said Bev Grieve, the city’s director of development services.

The jury member who presented the award said New Westminster’s policy is a well thought-out, complex initiative and practical. The presenter also pointed out the policy could easily be adopted by other communities.

A New Westminster wine lover has just released a new guide to B.C. wines that’s different from others out there.

Produced by Stephen Bruyneel and called SB’s BC Wine Guide, it narrows down the wineries to visit—including four in the Fraser Valley—and focuses on their best wines, complete with his own personal tasting “tweets.”

“I got into B.C. wines in the late 1990s and have been writing about them on social media for about five years now,” said Bruyneel.

“People are always asking me what’s the best and why that’s the case, so I finally wrote it all down in one place.”

The end result is a intentionally no-frills guide of just 30 pages or so on all of B.C.’s wine regions—the Okanagan, Naramata, Similkameen, Vancouver

Island, and of course the Fraser Valley.

But you won’t find usual big names in it.

“Many of the wineries may be unfamiliar, except to ‘wine dweebs’ like me,” said Bruyneel.

“La Frenz, for example, is

widely seen as the best overall winery not just in B.C., but Canada. Pinot noirs from Blue Mountain, Kettle Valley and Averill Creek, Syrah from Nichol Vineyard, even wines from Mt. Lehman in Abbotsford. I hope it will show people just how good some of these smaller wineries are.”

The format for the wine guide is also pretty straight forward, with an emphasis on usability.

“No colour or photos, but directions to the wineries, recommendations on what to taste and buy, even my tasting notes going back a decade or so,” said Bruyneel.

“It comes as a pdf, so you can print it off or keep it on your smart phone to use while tasting or shopping.”

For more information on SB’s BC Wine Guide, visit www.sbwinesite.com.

New B.C. wine guide focuses on ‘the best’

Stephen Bruyneel has been writing about B.C. wines for about five years, and has been sampling the province’s wines for much longer. He’s put what he’s learned into a no-frills guide that gives you only what you need to know for a great self-guided tour of what B.C. has to offer.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

Heritage-style elegance is at top of mind at Polygon’s Kingston House, a collection of two-bedroom apartment residences in a master-planned community that is inspired by an Ivy League legacy.

“You can move in this summer,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “With payments from $899 a month, this is a great opportunity for fi rst-time buyers to purchase a home in the South Surrey market.”

Kingston House is the fi rst apartment collection at Polygon’s Harvard Gardens, a master-planned community that is also

close to top schools, golf courses, shopping and dining.“Th ere’s nothing like this anywhere else,” Rohatyn says.

“Many parents of fi rst-time buyers recognize the great value and are bringing their kids to Kingston House to assist them in buying their fi rst home.”

Th e homes at Kingston House are spacious and inviting, with over-height ceilings on the main and fourth fl oor, generous patios or covered decks, and huge windows. Engineered stone countertops in the kitchen are complemented by fl at-panelled cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. Rich wood laminate

fl ooring is featured throughout the main areas, with lush carpeting in the bedrooms. Spa-like bathrooms have designer-selected imported porcelain tile fl ooring, engineered stone countertops and a contemporary patterned hand-set ceramic tile tub and shower surround with marble and glass mosaic tile accents. Th e master ensuite adds another touch of luxury with dual porcelain undermount sinks (most plans) and polished chrome accessories.

Outside, the architecture is inspired by the East Coast, with brick cladding, natural wood soffi ts and black metal detailing.

Homeowners at Kingston House will also have access to Th e Rowing Club; a private residents-only clubhouse featuring over 9,000 sq.ft . of resort-style amenities such as an outdoor pool and spa, gymnasium, fi tness facilities, a screening room and other amenities. A resident concierge will be available to assist with your every need, and two fully furnished suites are available for out-of-town guests.

Two-bedroom homes start at $259,900. For more information, visit by the presentation centre at 152nd Street and 32nd Avenue, open 12 to 6 p.m. daily except Fridays, call 604-541-8092, or visit polyhomes.com.

Premier living at Polygon’s Kingston House

By Kerry Vital

Th e Cottages at Seabright Farm is the largest and newest residential project in Point Roberts. Construction recently started, and Lower Mainland residents are fl ocking to it to purchase their own private piece of paradise.

“You can purchase an ocean-view cottage for less than the price of an average condominium in Vancouver,” says Wayne Knowles of Orca Shores LLC, the project’s

developer.Seabright Farm is comprised of 58 lots

spread across 62 acres of gently sloping south-facing waterfront. Th e large lots (1/4 to 1/2 an acre) off er privacy along with the great views and are located in three distinct zones: the Bluff , the Meadows and the Woodlands. Seabright Farm will also have a barn/community centre, greenhouse, outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, sauna, community vegetable and fl ower gardens,

and orchards. Th e trails are perfect for running, cycling or horseback riding, and off er direct access to the beach. Because of both the elevation and south slope of the entire property, you’ll fi nd a gorgeous view no matter where you purchase.

Th e cottage plans range from 850 to over 2,500 square feet, in a variety of two-or-more-bedroom fl oor plans. Th e styles include open fl oor plans, stone fi replaces, sunny window seats, hardwood fl ooring, large relaxing decks and covered porches. All of the plans give owners the option to expand their cottages in the future, whether it’s with a guesthouse, a studio or a separate master suite. Covered decks and breezeways can be built between the buildings, and garages (complete with

guest suites) or potting sheds added to truly make your Seabright cottage your own. Th e cottage designs have been specifi cally developed to refl ect the historical summer cottages and simple farm buildings typical of Point Roberts.

Th at character is obvious when you visit the sales centre, which is actually an original farmhouse from the 1890s that’s been outfi tted with fi nds from garage sales and Pottery Barn. It will become an additional gathering place for Seabright owners, along with the barn-themed community hall that will be used as a venue for neighbourhood

gatherings, art shows for local artists, cooking demonstrations, musical performances and wine tastings, among many other things!

And beyond Seabright Farm, Point Roberts has plenty of other things to do, whether you’re staying for a month, a week or just a weekend. Play a round of golf at the 18-hole Point Roberts Golf and Country Club, or pay a visit to the Lighthouse Marine Park to see Orca whales, comb the beach or go clamming or crabbing. Th e 275-acre Lily Point Marine Reserve is just around the beach corner from Seabright Farm, and features sandy bluff s and tidal fl ats. Th e full-service Point Roberts Marina has over 900 slips and is also only minutes away. Th e Point’s unique restaurants and eclectic shops round out the experience.

Canadians looking to purchase a cottage at Seabright Farm will be able to secure attractive long-term fi nancing through a U.S. banking institution with 20 per cent down, and a Real Estate Disclosure Statement has been fi led in British Columbia.

With the opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road earlier this year and plans to build a new bridge to replace the tunnel on Hwy 99, getting to Point Roberts is becoming that much more convenient from all parts of the Lower Mainland.

Th e pricing at Seabright Farm is also exceptional, with lots starting at $180,000 U.S., while cottage and lot combinations start at $399,000.

For more information about Th e Cottages at Seabright Farm, visit www.seabrightfarmcottages.com, call toll-free at 1-888-732-6915 or email [email protected].

Submitted photosThe Cottages at Seabright Farm are located just minutes from the Lower Mainland, but you’ll easily be able to put your worries aside at your historically inspired cottage in a gorgeous ocean-view location. Tons of amenities are just around the corner, including the Point Roberts Marina.
