Tacky berms, exhilarating jumps and flowy trails are the hallmark of Silver Star Bike Park. With an eye on progres-sion, trails range from easy riding green trails for the, uh, green rider, to black diamond, thrill-a-minute enthusiasts who look to push the pace.

With that concept in mind, Silver Star Bike Park is pedal-ling towards the future, add-ing Cross Country trails for the start of 2013 season.

“I’m super-excited we’ve been able to do this,” says Ian Galbraith, summer busi-ness manager at Silver Star. “By adding cross country trails, hopefully we can create even more mountain bike en-thusiasts. Our goal is getting people out there riding.”

The season opens with a bonus weekend June 22 and 23. The Bike Park gets into full swing June 27, where it’s open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plus there’s Extended Play, where lifts stay open until 7 p.m. every Wednesday and Fridays.

But it’s the addition of XC that’s getting the headlines this year.

For those old enough to remember, the XC trails will incorporate the resort’s old school Canada Cup course trails located around the Knoll. Cam Sorensen, Silver Star Bike Park director, said the trail crew has been work-ing feverishly to give them a “new-school flavour for the modern trail bikes.”

Sorensen said all levels

of trails will be added to the XC menu. An easy green trail around the Knoll, while a pair of blue and a trio of black trails will be added over the course of the season.

“Some riders might re-member the trail Crack of Dawn,” says Sorensen. “It’s had a few upgrades, but most of it is the same old classic burly XC from its previous glory days.”

While XC is new to the re-sort, the trail crew haven’t for-gotten its core riders. Harking to his inner Yoda, Sorensen and his crew are busy adding the newest blue trail to the hill. Construction of Jedi Mind Trick is well under way. The crew hopes to have the first phase open by late July. The fast, flowy trail will be filled with berms and jumps.

This really is going to be a fantastic ride. We’ve built a lot of trails over the years and I can say that I haven’t been this excited in a long, long time.”

The resort will also play host to a number of great events this year. The B.C. Championships take place on July 27 and 28 and the Fre-eride Festival returns Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

To follow updates on what Cam Sorensen and his crew are up to visit www.summer.skisilverstar.com and check for Bike Park Updates under the my MOUNTAIN INFO section. Look for Silver Star Bike Park on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news and great give-aways all season long.

Few days garner the atten-tion of so many of your fam-ily and friends like that of your wedding. Even fewer days are captured so vividly in pictures.

So it only makes sense that your backdrop be the second best dressed at your ceremony (with all apologies to the groom).

With a stunning array of wild-flowers and mountain peaks painting the scenery, Silver Star boasts some of the Okanagan’s most vivid canvasses on which to paint your masterpiece.

In summer, the resort’s wed-ding gazebo is a short walk from the village centre where it overlooks the Monashee moun-tain range. Ceremony’s can ac-commodate 120 guests exactly one mile above sea level. The scenery, combined with the cool mountain air makes a perfect combination.

Come winter, a horse-drawn carriage ride to the wedding meadow provides the perfect snow-covered portrait to accen-tuate your photos.

Once the ceremony is com-plete, smaller wedding parties

have the option of celebrating at the Silver Grill Steak and Chop House. The quaint restaurant delivers some of the Okana-gan’s finest food and wine. For larger groups, The Den offers a charming atmosphere with Sil-ver Star’s great dining options.

The resort also boasts some fantastic four-star accommoda-tions. Snowbird Lodge features 54 luxury units located in the heart of the village, each with private hot tubs.

FireLight Lodge, the newest accommodation at Silver Star, boasts contemporary rooms and is located adjacent to the skating pond and Tube Town, and just a short walk from the village. Plus, Silver Star offers great accommodation discounts for wedding parties as well as a host of activities, like skiing, skating and snowshoeing in winter and mountain biking in the summer.

For more information on booking your wedding at Silver Star, visit us online at skisilverstar.com or contact our groups department at 250-558-6043 or email us at [email protected].

Professional mountain bike and trials rider Ryan Leech re-turns to Silver Star on August 10 with his innovative Ride & Reach workshop, where both bike han-dling skills and refin-ing body and mind on the yoga mat.

Leech says this workshop goes be-yond the typical ‘how-to’ and explores the powerful develop-ment of mental state experiences to enhance your performance and enjoy-ment.

“It’s my conviction that we can ‘increase the bandwidth’ of our riding experience, so that riding just gets better and better the longer that we do it,”

says the personable Leech. “I believe in cultivating this

capacity for higher levels of enjoyment, it is of deep-ser-

vice to, rather than an escape from, our regular daily lives.”

Leech said his in-tention for this work-shop is to offer a va-riety of useful ways, through yoga and on-bike body/mind/spirit practices, to enliven every moment of ev-

ery ride. Camp price is $150 and in-

cludes bike park day ticket, yoga sessions, and on-mount-ian coaching.

They are like your favourite band that breaks up. Each go out on their own, con-tinue to thrive, but realize that their best work comes when they are together.

Silver Star Mountain Resort and the Okanagan Wine Festival Society are reunit-ing this summer to bring back one of their greatest hits.

The Okanagan Wine Festival Society is bringing the Mile High Wine Tasting into the village at Silver Star Saturday, August 10. The event is being sponsored by Valley First Credit Union.

Blair Baldwin, general manager of the OWFS, said some of the Okanagan’s best wineries will be coming to one of B.C.’s best summer venues.

“We’re pleased to be able to bring a sig-nature event back to Silver Star,” notes Baldwin.

The OWFS had moved the Silver Star event into the Valley for the summer of 2011, in hopes of reaching a broader base. Baldwin says the decision to come back to Silver Star lies in the fact that the event has such a unique appeal.

“The challenge is to differentiate yourself, he says. “There are plenty of wine festivals in hotel ballrooms across Canada. It’s a very competitive market in the summer and as a society we realized it makes sense to work towards our strengths.”

Those strengths include a partner with the experience at organizing an event that in-cludes a number of B.C. best wineries. The fact that this is the only wine tasting event in Canada held one mile above sea level adds to its unique appeal. Baldwin says mix in the fact that the OWFS has a great work-ing relationship with Silver Star makes it an easier sell to their sponsors.

Ian Galbraith, summer business manager at Silver Star and wine enthusiast, says it was the one gap in their summer schedule that they are thrilled to have filled.

“It’s a great mix of wine, fine dining, an art exhibit by Gallery Odin,” he says. “We’re excited the festival is coming back to the Star.”

The popularity of the event made it one of the most sought after tickets in the Okana-gan each summer. Galbraith says he ex-pects another sold out event. The resort is complimenting the Saturday progressive tasting with three wine master’s dinners on August 9 as part of its Summer Wine and Food Festival.

The Silver Grill will host a fine dining ex-

perience, The Bulldog will feature a gour-met BBQ menu and Bugaboos will bring back its popular Tapas. All three Friday, Aug. 9 events will start with a reception at 6 p.m. and the main course starting at 6:30

The weekend will also include Gallery Odin presenting six Okanagan artists who will work on their own interpretation of Silver Star’s village. The artists will work on their art in the village over the weekend until the start of the Mile High Wine Tasting event. Then their creations will be sold through silent auction. Artists includes Glenn Clark, Elizabeth Moore, Destanne Norris, Wendy Penner, Barry Rafuse and Julia Trops.

The outdoor event will also include live

music and an after party starting at 7 p.m. in The Saloon.

“A great outdoor event deserves great live music,” says Baldwin, who’s lined up Sista B and the Boyz to serenade the patrons.

Galbraith agrees, saying there has been a flood of positive feedback and ticket en-quiries since the announcement of the Mile High Wine Tasting event.

“It’s hard to top the atmosphere,” says Galbraith. “Live music, wine and fresh mountain air. What more could you ask for?”

For more information or for tickets to Mile High Wine Tasting or for Wine Masters’ Dinners call 1-800-663-4431 or email [email protected].

It’s an early winter morning. Dark, cold, quiet. There is the sound of crunching snow be-neath my feet as I travel along a trail amidst the snow covered trees. Making its way over the Monashee Mountains to the east is the sun. It’s early rays light my path and blanket me with a sense of warmth. My mind is clear and I couldn’t be happier.

Switch to summer, same sce-nario, only snow has given way to dirt paths, grass and fallen leaves.

Still, the mind remains unclut-tered.

With the tremendous influence of a computerized world, out-door experiences like what I de-scribed appear to be few and far between for many people.

Time spent in the home, of-fice, car, and shopping malls rather than outdoors is more the norm. Moving in the fresh air, ex-periencing nature is more of an event than part of a lifestyle.

In writing this piece I came across a number of noteworthy individuals who, in their own ex-periences, appear to uphold the idea of spending time in the out-doors:

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand every-thing better.” Albert Einstein

While it has been reported many North Americans have become complacent with a sed-entary lifestyle, this trend isn’t a way of life for everyone.

Mountain health is a term put to the emerging community of people who embrace leading their lives by being active out-doors with pursuits associated in a natural or mountain setting.

The outdoors have become their reborn playground. Com-munities like Silver Star are seeing people who are already adapted to this enlightened life-style or wish to get started. With the wide range of activities of-fered throughout the year, play-ing outside on Silver Star is on the increase once again.

Being active outdoors not only has jaw dropping health bene-fits, it also has mental and social ones as well.

There are a number of entry level programs introducing peo-ple to both summer and winter activities at Silver Star. Whether on your own or with friends, the fresh mountain air coupled with the beautiful scenery is a step in the right direction.

Silver Star’s favourite place to Stay, Play, Wine and Dine!

One mile above sea level, Sil-ver Star’s mid-mountain village is light-years away from the or-dinary.

Located a short 20 minute drive from Vernon, the resort possesses some of the Okanangan’s most phenomenal, and ac-cessible, views.

The hiking season opens June 29 as the Summit Chairlift runs from noon until 4 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Sept. 1. Hikers can also access the Comet Express Six-Pack that runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike to the Comet takes about 20 minutes before be-ing able to make it to the summit. However, hikers using the Comet can’t take the charlift back to the village. With the Monashee mountain range as the backdrop, few can com-plain. Sprinkle in vast patches of wildflowers and some wild-life, and photographers and sightseers are in for an adven-ture.

For those looking for some insight into their surroundings, a guided tour with Outdoor Dis-coveries, led by award-winning

naturalist Roseanne Van Ee, is a definite must.

Outdoor Discoveries offers a wide range of tours, ranging from the informative Bears and Berries to the historical Ghosts

of Silver Star tour. For more information or to book call Van Ee at 250-545-7446 or go online to outdoordis-coveries.com.

Great food options abound in the moun-tain village, whether it’s lunch at The Sa-loon, a beer on the patio at The Bulldog, or a coffee and pastry at Bugaboos.

Disc Golf returns, with nine holes of mountainside ad-venture located just south of the village

near the RV and camping lot. Geocaching is also available

at the resort. It’s a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game and allows players to find hid-den containers placed around the mountain while using GPS-enabled tools. Silver Star will have GPS units for rent.

For more info on tickets or to book tours, visit the Ski Dazzle summer ticket office, located in the heart of the village or by calling 250-558-6023 or email [email protected]
