From the Organ Bench
It is a joy to announce the founding of Cardinal
Newman Organ Academy beginning Fall 2018. The
intent of the academy is to introduce faith-filled
students to consider choosing a voca"on as church
organist or organist-director of choirs. Why the organ?
“In the La"n Church the pipe organ is to be held in
high esteem, for it is the tradi"onal musical
instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the
Church's ceremonies and powerfully li%s up man's
mind to God and to higher things.” [Sacrosanctum
Concilium 1963] Organ music??? Yes.
The pipe organ (or high-quality digital computer
organ) is a natural fit for Holy Mass liturgy, even the
“new” Mass. Think about it… Excep"ng the human
voice, there is no other musical instrument that
developed side-by-side with Roman liturgy. When
properly executed by trained organists, liturgy and
organ fit together. That’s because the two grew up
together! However, the organ is torture when used
poorly. I know some of you will tell me it is torture
even if it is properly used! Love ya’ – mean it.
Currently, there is a shortage of trained organists and
choral masters, crea"ng a void of excellence in
Catholic church music. Execu"ng the type of music the
Roman Church has historically stood for and currently
calls for, requires a higher skill level. Thank you
Cardinal Newman Principal Jacqualine Kaprowski and
Director of Music Educa"on David Cochrane for
redefining excellence!
– Brad Cunningham, organist-music associate AND
adjunct professor of organ, Cardinal Newman High
School

Grateful and Giving
“This eternal joy “to the full” is the des"ny of every
person without excep"on. While on our pilgrim way,
stewardship, embraced as a way of life, increases our
awareness of how God is drawing us to himself and how
he is making life-giving connec"ons with others. The
greater the awareness, the greater the marvel; the
greater the marvel, the greater the gra"tude”.
