Ramblings - Fr. Brankin Pentecost Today we are celebrating the Feast of Pentecost—the fiftieth day after Jesus rose from the dead when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and the Virgin Mary in the Upper Room under the appearance of tongues of Fire—we are talking about the Gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church—and that Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth—as Jesus Himself calls Him. The Holy Spirit, Our Lord has told us, is going to teach us all the Truth and that of course is what we must believe—because it is true. So we are back to our discussion of Truth—remembering that when Jesus told Pontius Pilate that He had come to give testimony to the Truth-Pilate scoffed “Heh! What is truth?” As a pagan—steeped in myths and darkness and ignorance—he had no idea what Truth might be—and he suspected that there probably was no such a thing as truth—and that even if there were truth—that we would never be able to know it. So what is Truth? Truth is basically when that which we think in our minds matches up with reality. And what is reality? Reality is that which is—that which exists. So if what we think in our minds lines up with what exists—then that is true. Of course, there are a lot of people these days—including many modernist cardinals and bishops—who say that we cannot know the truth. They say that the truth is too big and mysterious for wee ones like us. And they tell us that we don’t know the truth and we can never know the truth. Who do we think we are if we profess to know the truth—or if we think that that which we believe in our religion is true? How pharisaical and pelagian and gnostic! If you want to be holy and humble you will admit you don’t know anything—let alone the truth. Actually I think the problem is that these modernist clerics see their doubt as a virtuous thing—they thrill to live in a cloud of darkness where convictions and beliefs and even morals are constantly evolving and changing and surprising us. They seem to relish not knowing anything for certain. One wonders if they even believe in God let alone Truth. They certainly ignore the fact that Jesus Himself said that He is the Way and the Truth and the Life. He seems to claim that there is such a thing as Truth—and that we can know it—and that if we know Him—then We know the Truth—and as really and as completely as finite beings can. It stands to reason that Our minds must be molded by that truth, and our lives modelled after that truth--and if we cling to Jesus—interiorly and exteriorly, then the truth is ours. Isn’t that what Jesus said? Interiorly, we cling to Jesus by means of the sacraments and prayer and sacrifice. And when we do that we are transformed into Him who is the Truth. It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me. Exteriorly, we cling to Jesus by means of the teachings of the Church—where the God of Truth—desiring that we know Him and obey Him and love Him—uses the teachings of the Catholic Church—the One, True Church—the Mystical Body of Christ—to teach us who God is and what He wants of us. Our greatest guides in this life are the unchanging teachings of the Catholic Church; and they are unchanging because they come from God who cannot change. And who that God is and what He reveals of Himself is the Truth. If God were ever to change then He would not be God—and there would be no Truth. If God were some madcap jester—the now famous “God of surprises”—the God of paradigm shifts, who fools us one day with this nonsense and the next day with that nonsense—if He were Someone who teases us with ever changing rules and laws that come from an uncontrolled will—much as the Muslims believe—then He is not God—but more likely the Father of Lies—and we would need to run from him! So the truth—like God—does not—and cannot change. Why do you think that Benedict XVI spent so much effort trying to teach us that the Second Vatican Council was in line with all the prior teachings of the Church? He knew that many tried to make of Vatican II some sort of Super-Council that changed everything we believed.

He knew that if the Council did change anything that we believed about God and Jesus and the Church and life and salvation—then everything would be at risk. Nothing would be certain—nothing could be said to be true—not even the teachings of Vatican II—not even our belief in God. God—if He is God—does not change, and therefore neither does the truth change. And moral teachings—that come from moral law (which comes from God) do not change—and for the same reason. This is the real reason behind the program of the modernists—they do not want to accept that moral law is true and constant and universally applicable—that there is only one way to live. They do not want to be bound by the moral law. They chafe at the thought that moral law does not change, and that they are bound to it. So why does moral law not change? Because Moral law comes from God. It is derived from His Being—His Nature—His Essence—His Attributes—His Word—and that never changes. Moral law is God’s will for humans, that they be like Him and observe all that He decrees. Moral law comes directly from God and is true and real because it comes from God who is true and real. Can we know how to act morally in a given circumstance? Of course we can. If we believe that there is such a thing as Truth and that we can know it, we need not be paralyzed like Pontius Pilate or modernist prelates in the face of questions and doubts. If we know God and Jesus and the teachings of the Church, we can act decisively and morally. If God were this God of Surprises that the Pope talks about—where last year we believed this and this year we believe that—well we would surely be lost because we would never be able to determine what is true or false, right or wrong—moral or immoral. We would be paralyzed and unable to act because we would not know what is Gods will for us. What if there is a doubt? What if there is a controversy about what is right or wrong and everyone is confused? For Example—how about the use birth control? Or whether or not one can have an abortion or get involved in mercy killing?—or whether gay marriage or sex outside of marriage is allowed? The whole world says that all that is fine. Are we Catholics obliged to go against the world? That is difficult. What if someone really, really thinks that they can really, really do this or that questionable activity because they really, really disagree with the Church. Is that their conscience? And can a person violate their conscience? Is it ok to go against the church teachings if we think the Church is wrong? We have to distinguish between a poorly formed conscience which is mistaken and not fully informed and a good con-science. The moment a person learns what the Church teaches about any controverted issue, then by the very fact that they now know what the Church teaches—their conscience is thereby informed and they now know what is right or wrong and cannot go against the church or their conscience. We may not understand completely why the Church teaches these things—but if we accept that the Church is from God—we cannot resist her teachings. The Church helps us go from a poorly formed conscience to a well formed conscience. In other words a person might say: “I used to think that artificial birth control was ok, but now that I know what the Church teaches, I know that birth control is wrong. Because I believe in the Church, I accept her teachings.” The traditional teachings of the Church are how we go from doubt to certainty—from questions to Truth. There are sillies in our Church who prattle on about how there are no moral absolutes—that the rightness and wrongness of an act depends on what we think—and what we accept—and that depends upon circumstances and situations and consequences and which benefit outweighs other benefits. These people teach that in the long run everyone is right and no one is wrong—everyone wins and no one loses. Well, these are the bishops who give out participation trophies. And they are wrong—theologically, philosophically, and humanly. Think about it—if we really were unable to know the truth—what then would be the point of having bishops? By doubting the existence or know ability of truth—many of our bishops and Cardinals are casting doubt not only on the identity of Jesus, but on the existence of God as well and the impossibility of knowing and observing Gods will, and living a moral life. They seem to be throwing in with Pilate and with all his dark cynicism and doubt. As for me and my house—we will throw in with Jesus—the Way the Truth and the Life.

Widows and widowers : Third Saturday of the month, 2-5:30 p.m., looking for new members for Naim chapter, organization of widowed men and women who meet for friendship and support; at St. Vincent Ferrer Church Cabrini room, 1530 Jackson Ave., River Forest; for infor-mation, contact Virginia Mersch at 708-685-5042 or Gerry Liss at 773-685-5042 or [email protected].

Dear St. Odilo Parishioners, Hello! My name is Julia Camarillo and I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date of what is happening in my life. I am in my junior year at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. I absolutely love this school with the many friends I made, the teachers who teach me amazing things, and the welcoming atmosphere that led me to this campus in the first place. Most importantly, St. Norbert helped me grow stronger in my faith. Besides my pressure to achieve good grades here at St. Norbert, there are challenges in deciding what activities to be involved with. Many of these activities are fun and provide a break from schoolwork. Through my desire to learn more about God, I decided to join Cru my freshman year and continue to participate with Cru since then.

Cru is a caring Christian ministry that continues to care for college students since 1951. The group is active at St. Norbert and thousands of campuses statewide and overseas. The Lord continues to use this ministry to help me grow in my faith and give me a new heart that feels a great burden to reach people for Christ.

This summer, I have an unbelievable opportunity to take part in a summer mission project sponsored by Cru. I will be going with other students to Medora, North Dakota. A summer spent on a project like this can be invaluable. Few other environments can top this in developing spiritual leadership and ministry skills to equip me and others for campus outreach and ministry after college. There will be great opportunities to share my faith as international tourists and vacationers flood the cowboy like town. Our group will work during the day in the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation and during the night we will lead Bible Study and help our co-workers and other people grow in their relationship with Christ. My heart’s desire is to increase my understanding of God’s word, deepen my relationship with God, and to be more burdened for reaching people with the Gospel. To be fully honest, I am very excited to go to a new place this summer and encounter people I never knew; but I am also nervous at the same time for the very same reasons. I know that my faith will be stretched as I do things I have never done before!

In order to make this possible, I need a team of ministry partners who will give to Cru. All gifts will be earmarked for my summer mission expenses. As you might imagine, raising the necessary funds will be one of my greatest steps of faith in prep-aration for the summer. I need a total of $3,600 which covers room and board for the summer as well as transportation. Would you prayerfully consider joining my team by giving a gift of $50, $100, or $200 dollars or more? Of course whatever amount the Lord leads you to do is the right amount.

The easiest way to give is on Cru’s secure online site at https://give.cru.org/0995332. Or if you prefer, you can simply drop off your donation in the collection basket or at the rectory. Checks should be made payable to Cru. More than anything I need your prayers as I seek to follow the Lord by participating in this summer mission trip. Thank you for considering joining my team to help reach people for Christ at Medora, North Dakota this summer! Sincerely yours, Julia Camarillo

Archdiocesan priests will gather for renewal June 18-21 By Michelle Martin | Staff writer Priests from across the Archdiocese of Chicago will gather June 18-21 to pray together, to renew and refresh their spirits and to reconnect to Jesus and to one another. Cardinal Cupich will have an opportunity to address the presbyterate at the end of the convocation. All archdiocesan priests—from those being ordained May 19 to those in their 90s who still volunteer for ministry— are expected to attend the three-day gathering at Pheasant Run Resort, and priests who are members of religious congregations and who minister in the archdiocese are welcome as well. To make it possible for all priests to attend, Cardinal Cupich has asked parishes to suspend daily Masses during the convocation.

This means there will be no Masses Tuesday, June 19th, Wednesday, June, 20th, & Thursday, June 21th by order of Cardinal Cupich. The Mass intentions that are booked for those days have been moved to January 8th, 9th & 10th, 2019. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. Also, the Father’s Day Novena will be June 17-18 and then June 22-28.
