June 1, 2019 Dear Volunteer, Since the implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People by the Bishops of the United States in 2003, the Church has made great strides in developing policies and procedures that assist in providing safe environments for our young people. One of the most important safety precautions instituted by the Charter has been the requirement that dioceses evaluate the background of all employees and volunteers who have contact with minors. In 2018, the Charter was revised to ensure that all dioceses are using the most current and effective means at their disposal to protect the most vulnerable among us. In compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Minors and Young People, therefore, all employees and volunteers in the Diocese of Phoenix will be required to be trained in Safe Environment annually and complete a state and federal criminal background check prior to serving. Effective July 1, 2019, we are implementing out a new database training and background check system through Catholic Mutual Group. You will have to log in to the following website: www.phoenix.cmgconnect.org. · If you have been serving for the last few years, your information and class history should have followed you to our new database. You will still have to create a login and complete the Safe Environment Application online. After you have done this, you will be directed to complete the Renewal for Safe Environment Training. · If you are new to our Diocesan Safe Environment Training or if this is your first time serving for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, you will still have to create and complete the Safe Environment Application. You will be required to sign up for a LIVE Initial/ Foundation Training for Safe Environment. · Effective July 1, 2019, all volunteers are required to complete a state and federal criminal background check. A third-party company called Selection.com will be processing the background check for all. · The Diocese will not have access to personal information. The Diocese will be informed when you are cleared from the background check. · If you are a new volunteer, you will have to submit to an interview and submit references to your local Safe Environment Coordinator. Please contact them directly at the Parish office 480.967.8791 or [email protected]. We are grateful to all who wish to participate in the Church’s ministry. Thank you for your commitment in keeping a safe environment for our children. Anne Vargas-Leveriza, Ph.D. Director Office of Child and Youth Protection and Safe Environment Training

SISTERS’ CORNER ...

This Saturday, June 29th we celebrated the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We want to honor this day talking a little bit about Mary’s heart of service. When reading the Visitation’s passage, we hear, if we silent our hearts, God telling us: “Like her”. “Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea.”

Mary understood her mission, which was to communicate Christ to others. She didn’t wait for somebody to tell her what to do, she didn’t think about it twice. She hurried and went to serve.

We are called to serve like her, who doesn’t seem to realize that she sacri"ces herself, who doesn’t emphasize the service provided, who doesn’t tell others but serves quietly without other people knowing about what she is doing, as if she was the bene"ciary.

What the world does, many times, by work, let us do it by true charity and consent of true humility, generosity and patience.

Lord, give us hearts for service. Help us to see Your face in others, specially in those who are in most need of your mercy.

Let us continue lifting up our prayers to our dear Mother, may she keep interceding for us in heaven through her Son, so that one day we can all go live with her in the Heavenly Kingdom.

FROM THE SCHOOL WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL

Dear OLMC Community,

As the summer progresses so does the construction taking place at the school. We have been very blessed to have received such a generous grant of $2.8 million dollars from the Shea Homes Family Charities. As a stipulation of this grant we have to do our part by raising 20% percent. I wanted to thank so many of you for your donations so far as we are moving toward this goal. As we continue our efforts to raise this money, please prayerfully consider a donation. No donation is too big or too small. You may donate online at the school website, www.olmcschool.info.

The renovations being completed by Shea are taking place at both the school and the preschool. Each building has been completely gutted and are in the process of being remodeled. Everything is going to be new from the 'oors, to the cabinets, windows, lighting and paint to name a few! We also are having technology upgrades, air conditioners are being replaced and the roofs are being repaired. There will also be some new security enhancements. We are also getting new bathrooms! I have never been more excited about bathrooms in my life!! If you are curious about seeing the progress, please follow us on social media. Sign up now! We have Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You are able to follow the construction progress on all three. Additionally, we communicate weekly during the school year through our newsletter. Please sign up for this too! Go to our website and on the bottom right there is a link to sign up. This weekly newsletter is our most commonly used form of communication.

Thank you so much for supporting the school. I am very excited to welcome everyone back in August. There is still time to enroll if you are interested. Please do not hesitate to contact me [email protected].

Sincerely,

Dr. Shewbridge Principal, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School

Dear Friends,

As we head into the July 4th Holiday, the US Congress held a hearing to decide whether or not to form a Committee to study Reparations for Slavery. I heard someone say that “the US has never dealt with racism”. I would disagree with that as our history shows we have dealt plenty with racism, even if there is still more to deal with.

Many of our Founders did not want the new country to include slavery. But they soon realized that in order to get all the colonies on board they had to comprise. But many of them stated that the issue of chattel slavery sowed the seeds of future discord and division for the new nation. And so it did. A Civil War engulfed the country, in which it was the US Government that fought on the side to abolish slavery. So over 150 years ago slavery ended. But what did not end was the government’s ability to force segregation by law upon its citizens. Having “black only” sections for restaurants or restrooms was not the choice of the proprietors, it was a legal requirement.

Our society would be forced to deal with the issue of legal segregation a hundred years after the Civil War and "nally end it once for all with the Civil Rights Act. The Civil Rights Act not only ended any legal forms of segregation but it also set up a structure to deal with on-going racial discrimination whether in employment, housing, schools and other places of public accommodation. And that system has worked pretty well to root out systemic forms of racial discrimination.

But even with all that, we still realized that the legacy of slavery, segregation and racism left many of the descendants of slaves in a deep hole. So, in order to try to level the playing "eld and help them dig out of the hole much quicker, A!rmative Action was instituted as a way of implementing the Civil Rights Act.

One of the concepts behind A!rmative Action as it was applied to blacks, was a realization that for descendants of slaves to achieve legal, employment, educational and housing parity with whites and others in the US, they would need at times to get pushed to the front of the line until such time as when the playing "eld was even. This was a form of Reparations. It meant that whites and others might get pushed to the back of the line as one way of lifting blacks past the damaging effects of segregation.

Sadly, our political and judicial geniuses have expanded A!rmative Action way beyond race, creed, color or national origin. There are plenty of other groups who have been historically discriminated against but none of them to the

degree of US blacks. As a result, blacks are more likely to be pushed to the back of the A!rmative Action line. If a College has to choose between a poor black kid from the inner city and an upper middle-class transgendered kid, the black kid doesn't stand a chance in today’s pecking order.

Color me cynical but this latest call for Reparations seems like political pandering rather than an honest attempt to deal with the harmful legacy of slavery and segregation and denies the advances US society has made. The idea of a committee to study Reparations was the brainchild of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. She once declared on the House 'oor: “I stand here as a freed slave.” I guess she is older than she looks. Her estimated net worth is over $3.5 million. She and her husband graduated Yale and her son graduated Harvard. Her own success story seems to counteract her narrative of the need for Reparations.

But even so, the US has a history of racism and discrimination that was particularly aimed at blacks and we are still digging out of that hole. But we also have a history of dealing with it and trying to wash it out of our society and out of our hearts. And we will continue to try to rid ourselves of racial prejudice. That’s the amazing part about America, despite our 'aws we have consistently found ways to right our wrongs and correct our faults. If we had not, we would not still be here to celebrate our 243rd birthday.

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to

bear.” MLK

Happy 4th of July and God Bless America.

Love,

Fr. John B

PS Fr. Augustus Tolton, the "rst black Catholic priest in the US and a child of former slaves was advanced on his path to Sainthood as Pope Francis declared him “Venerable”, that he lived a life of heroic virtue. The next step is Beati"cation. Venerable Fr. Tolton please pray for America!
