Prayer and Resolute Discipleship

Dear OLPH,

This weekend last year, I wrote my first letter to you. My, does time fly! It is the weekend of transitions. Priests throughout our diocese are moving about, some retiring, some transferring, and some moving on. Together we give thanks for the time that Fr. Cesar Tolentino has shared with us here “in the Shade.” We promise him our prayers; we wish him farewell; and we hope to see him again. If distance should keep us apart, then we have confidence that all true lovers of God and neighbor will be reunited at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in Our Father’s House!

In that first letter, I recalled my first deep encounter with the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in the custody of the Redemptorists at St. Alphonsus Ligouri Church in Rome. A print hangs in my dining room and I gaze upon her at every meal. Many times this year I have cried out for her assistance: for wisdom, counsel, prudence, patience, courage… so that I may be the best pastor I can be, and above all, a holy priest. As we commemorate our Patroness this week, and as we enter into parish life with one full-time priest, please pray for me. I ask for and rely on your prayers. Seek the aid of our Mother.

This year, our parish taught me the “Mother of Christ” hymn, which describes our life as “tossed on a stormy sea” seeking the harbor of heaven! As your pastor, it is my duty to guide us through the waters -- be them smooth as glass, choppy, or downright perilous. I truly count on your prayers and support as we journey home to God, seeking as we go to bring the light of Christ into a world of shadow and woe.

Today in the Gospel, Jesus decides with determination to head towards Jerusalem and to the Crucifixion, a perilous journey: “When the days for Jesus' being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,” (Lk 9:51). Literally, Jesus set his face like flint towards Jerusalem, a phrase that recalls one of the suffering servant songs from Isaiah the Prophet, “I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame;” (50:7). Ever faithful to our Father’s plan, Jesus faced head-on what lay ahead.

As a parish family, let us look ahead. Jesus invites us to follow him, and He warns: “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God,” (Lk 9:62). The Lord God has everything at hand. Our confidence lies in Him.

This past week, I attended a three-day Pastor’s Workshop. One particularly moving homily from a brother priest and new pastor inspired confidence and peace! In the midst of great hardships, Saint Paul boasts not in his own strength but in the strength of the Lord. He acclaims what the Lord has done, and notes that he will boast of the things that show his weakness (2 Cor 11-12). The Good Lord assures Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9). Like Paul, I admit my weakness, “that the power of Christ may dwell with me.” I am far from perfect. On this one year anniversary of serving you, I do promise to concern myself wholeheartedly with the spiritual well-being of our faithful. I echo Paul, “I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your sakes,” (2 Cor 12:15). Let us pray for one another.

Your Father in Christ,

Fr. Wilson

Prayer of the Day ~ Thursday July 4th (Catholic Online)

Immaculate Mary, most

Holy Mother of God and

of Our Lord and

Savior Jesus Christ, we

the people of the United

States of America at this

historic moment stand

before you in a

humbled condition of

love, loyalty, affection,

and thankfulness. To

your Immaculate Heart

we recommit and

dedicate ourselves

throughout the entire American nation. To your

Son JesusChrist we pledge to serve His teaching,

His church, and to work for His kingdom on

earth. O Mary, to you do we flee for protection.

Surround the American family with your

maternal care; enfold us in your arms. Give to

this American land, built on the blood and tears

of so many faithful forebears, a peaceful and

praiseworthy existence in truth, love, justice, and

freedom. O Mary, we submit to you as the

Patroness of our beloved country. O Mary, Help

of Christians, enfold the Holy Father and

the Catholic Church within your protective

cloak; be our shield in the days ahead. Give to

the Church true holiness and freedom. Obtain

for our leaders holy zeal, the ability to face the

truth, and the courage to correct all abuses. Stop

the flood of atheism, greed, heresy, impurity,

lukewarmness, materialism, and selfishness that

threaten our nation. Show to those who have

strayed from the Church the way to

Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Mother of God, accept our

personal consecration to you and, through you,

bind us forever to the Holy Trinity. Gather us all

into your Immaculate Heart and unite us forever

with Jesus. O Mary, we love you.

Amen.
