Team Talk JUNE 4, 2018 Tell us something good Ashley Blythe achieves ICEA Certification The ICEA (International Certified Education Association) motto states that the patient has freedom to make decisions based on knowledge of alternatives in family- centered maternity and newborn care. ICEA philosophy states that the birth of a baby represents the birth of a family. ICEA promotes informed decision-making, evidence-based teaching, and family-centered care. In the past, childbirth educators were not certified in teaching childbirth classes. When Ashley Blythe, RN, BSN, IBCLC, ICCE, accepted the position as T.J. Samson's Childbirth Educator, she said she was informed that she needed to be certified. Ashley said, "There are different pathways to becoming certified, and I chose the traditional pathway which allows me as a nurse to expand my services. First one must become a member of ICEA (International Childbirth Education Association). Second, one must enroll in a standard certification educator workshop to complete 16 contact hours. T.J. Samson sent me to Raleigh, North Carolina for the workshop. Third, one must successfully complete an evaluated teaching series of at least 6 hours. Fourth, one must observe a minimum of two labors and/or births. Last, one applies to take the certification examination and maintain certification." Ashley says, "As the ICCE (International Certified Childbirth Educator) for T.J. Samson, I hope to provide this service to as many parents as I can reach. Currently, T.J. Samson offers a free 4-week class that allows parents to meet once a week. For the parents who want to take a one-day course, we offer a Saturday course as well." "Our classes offer education on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care. This class has actually brought in parents who are planning on delivering at other hospitals that don't offer this service or the service isn't free. It makes me so happy after talking to parents that have delivered and I see them breastfeeding, because before the class they weren't going to breastfeed. Also, I love it when a patient tells me that their delivery went great and they are so thankful for the class." Congratulations on this accomplishment, Ashley! Thank you for the education and care you provide to your patients!

The ABCs of SunshineBe mindful of sun protection all year long

From tanning oil to SPF 100, we now know the impact of the sun’s harsh rays on our skin. The sun shines year round, but we often overlook sun protection until we feel hot on sunny, summer days.

Can you guess which U.S. state has the highest rate of melanoma? Arizona? Florida? Answer: Vermont. The small, northeastern state is one of our country’s cloudiest, and locals often overlook the need for sun protection. If you’re headed to the beach, sunscreen is a no-brainer. But, how often have you grabbed your sunglasses on a bright, winter day and left your sunscreen at home?

Sunshine reflects off surfaces (e.g. water, snow, and concrete) exposing your skin to harmful UVA/UVB rays. Thankfully, most damage and skin cancer can be prevented. There is no reason to hide from the sun, but you are best preparing for your day of play by packing proper sun protection. Follow these tips to prevent wrinkles and decrease your chances of developing skin cancer:

A = Away. Stay away from the sun as much as possible from 10am-4pm in the afternoon. Find shade if you need to be outdoors.

B = Block. Use a “broad spectrum” 30 SPF or higher sunscreen that protects the skin from UVA/UVB rays.

C = Cover up. Wear clothing that covers the skin, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses with UV protection. Did you know you can purchase clothing made with sun protective fabric?

Now, get outside! The sun pours healthy vitamin D on us every day – go get some! You’ve heard it before: everything in moderation. Be mindful, be prepared, and use your sun protection. Enjoy!

Appointment ReminderCan’t make it to your appointment? That’s okay, we know that things come up. We just ask that in the event of a necessary cancellation, please call or go online to my.marathon-health.com to reschedule or cancel your appointment. This allows us to keep our calendar up-to-date and accurate so that your peers can utilize the center at that time.

Engaged Status Reminders

If the results of the biometric screening process indicated you or your covered spouse have 3 of 5 Moderate Risk Factors or 1 of 5 High Risk Factors (see below tables), you must participate in the Coaching program offered at the T.J. Fit for Life Health & Wellness Center. Three Health Coaching sessions need to be completed prior to December 31, 2018.

There is an opportunity to reduce the required number of visits if you complete the first Health Coaching visit by July 31, 2018 AND improve your risk factors to non-coaching required status, (two or fewer Moderate Risk Factors and zero High Risk Factors). If risk factor(s) have not improved, the two (2) remaining visits will be required.

Health Coaching sessions must be scheduled in advance and the first “no-show” will result in the Engaged status being forfeited until the visit has been rescheduled and completed. Additional “no-shows” will result in the Engaged status being forfeited through the remainder of the benefit plan year.

If you have any questions, please call the Fit for Life Health & Wellness Center. Fit for Life Health & Wellness Center

Week 10: Hammering Down Hunger

Feeling hungry shortly after you eat can throw a curve-ball in your weight loss progress. Consider the following tips to manage your hunger.

Water. Drink water all day long. Dehydration can cause us to feel like we need to eat more.

Protein and healthy fat. Fruits, vegetables, and grains are fantastic, but they won't keep you full for long. Add lean meats, nuts, seeds, nut butters, avocado, or olive oil to make your meal or snack last longer in your belly.

Minimize sugar. Too much sugar in your diet causes your blood sugar to fluctuate and can result in feeling hungry more quickly. Keep your added sugar intake to 24 grams per day for women and 36 grams per day for men.

Up your fiber. A meal that lacks fiber can leave you wanting more. Include an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and true whole grains like oats, brown rice, quinoa, or barely to help fill you up.

Non-Food Related Management

Healthy distraction. At times, our appetite (desire to eat) may deceive us into thinking we're hungry. The best way to find out: engage in a healthy distraction (try walking, calling a friend, reading, or starting a fun project).

Movement. As your health improves, exercise has been shown to increase hormones that aid in suppressing appetite. Squeeze some movement into every day for better appetite control.

Healthy Snack Ideas

Think snack food can't be healthy, fun and fiber-filled? Think again. Try this vegan chili cheese nooch popcorn.
