Reflection and Discussion

Pentecost Sunday is about a new beginning, a new way of living, acting and thinking. Pentecost is the day that the Spirit of God came to the disciples in a way that forever changed their lives. Instead of being afraid and confused, now the disciples lived and acted boldly and with confidence. Peter, as leader, gave his first sermon proclaiming the risen Lord and 3,000 other lives were touched and changed as well (Acts 2:14-41). We celebrate Pentecost not so much to recall a remarkable event in the lives of Jesus’ disciples, but to experience a remarkable event in our own. This means we must look for evidence of renewal in our lives today. Let’s examine the possibilities. Ask yourself:

Do I have a relationship that needs repair and forgiveness Do I have a friend who needs extra understanding? What can I do to jumpstart a new beginning for me? What job needs to be started or finished this week? Is there a good deed I haven’t done yet that still can make a difference for someone? Is there something I can do this week, out of my love for Christ, to help my friend, my family

or my community?

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church because this is the day that the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to take action and give witness to Christ. Their lives were changed forever, and they proved their love for God by how they treated one another. This renewed band of disciples began to act in a way that changed the whole world. How can you and your family change your world for the better and be renewed in Christ’s Spirit this Pentecost?
