Turned toward the future…

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENTDear Spiritual Life and Com-munity Engagement Anima-tors, A sage once said; « A To-day well prepared for is a future assured ! ».

Our next province-wide ren-dez-vous is being organized within this vision. «  Turned

Towards the Future….  », this is the theme of APAVECQ’s Congrès 2016.

At the last General Council meeting of our Pro-fessional Association, an animator-delegate from her region mentioned that « we Animators are all « condemned to excellence ». As a member of the professional personnel engaged in the work of Animators, we are at the same time employees and the Animation Service for our school or schools. In the context of austerity, we are constantly asked to do more with less. If many school team members are precious collaborators in our mission, the com-

prehension, to variable degrees, of the Animation Service, and especially its spiritual aspect, require that we present an offer of service that is dynamic, fine-tuned to the needs of the schools and the lan-guage of our vis-à-vis with whom we work day to day, as those who decide the priorities of the stu-dents in their school.

It is in this optic that the Organizing Committee for Congrès 2016 proposes quality workshops that will allow us to perfect our Professional art of today, and to allow us to continue on the path of excel-lence for today, and we all hope, for a long time to come.

Thank you to the Organizing Committee and their Coordinator, Louise Coutu, for their dedication.

A good Congrès 2016 to All.

Pierre Bélanger

President of APAVECQ

A WORD FROM THE COORDINATOR

turned toward thefuture

Turned, oriented, directed… Toward where? When? How? Big questions that dwell in each of us, more or less in-tensely, from the beginning to the end of our professional life. Alone, these questions come without a doubt. But accom-

panied, they are lighter to carry.

In our practice as Animators of spiritual care, guid-ance and community engagement, we accompany the students from here by our classroom experi-ence of every day. Since the service was put into place, what are the steps taken by animators in

the public sector? What do we bring specifically as a complimentary educational service offered to the young people of our primary and secondary schools?

The society into which our young people enter is in profound change. We propose experiences to them that are re-read and re-invested, which sus-tain the enhancement of our sense of commitment to the students and adults of our schools. We have adapted our practices, since the birth of our service until today, in order to keep pace with life which has changed and changes again.

The educational and political choices which have been made since the birth of the Animation Ser-

vice, but most particularly in recent years, have had an impact on education and the services which are offered. In some milieu, the Animation Service seems to have taken a hard hit.

Are we well trained to support them in their jour-ney? What are their challenges, and ours, in this time where nothing can be taken for granted?

As in the case of periods of great change in the past, the members of the Organizing Commit-tee for Congrès 2016 call you to a time to pause which will allow you to further your Professional improvement in the challenges of today and of those to come. What do we see on the horizon for the Animation Service in service to the students of today and of tomorrow? How can we better reach students and better play our unique role in the en-semble of the school milieu?

By sessions and dynamic workshops, with resource people and colleagues from all over Québec, we want to allow you to re-read your Professional practice and give you a trampoline for the coming year. Our students are intensely turned towards the future. We who accompany them, are as well.

In these hours geared to Professional enrichment, let us explore new horizons together!

Louise Coutu, Organizing Committee Coordinator

Suzanne Barthe, Gérald Boileau and Julie Tassé, CS des Portages de l’Outaouais

OPENING SESSION OF CONFERENCEThose with whom we walk….

With the group Qw4RTZ*

Through the Big questions that our young people are posing in the tumult of life, we accompany them. Through what we propose in our milieu, they question themselves, touch their limits, and discover their strengths and their passions.

Through words and music, an opening of Congrès 2016 that is rich in meaning and open to the future!

*Qw4rtz is a vocal 4-part harmony group made up of Louis-Al-exandre Beauchemin, François Pothier-Bouchard, Philippe Chourchesne-Lobeouf and François Fa2 Dubé. Their perform-ance speaks to the ears and also to the heart and to the intel-ligence of audiences here, young and old, and in Europe.

* Please note: The term “Animator” will be used for the sake of brevity as the variety of terms referring to this work in the English Sector are varied and long.

* Please note, for those less comfortable in French, there will be opportunities throughout the Congrès for break-out sessions in English to review subjects covered during the congrès and to allow for English-sector Animators to vision together the mech-anisms that will allow for their full participation in APAVECQ.

WORKSHOPSThursday June 9th, from 13h00 to 16h00

J1 Towards an Authentic Communicationwith Marion Séré*/ primary and secondary (offered in French)

An introductory workshop in non-violent communica-tion to :• Experience the power of empathy and self-empathy• Acquire concrete tools to use with students to speak of

needs and emotions• Develop kindness and constructive attitudes in all situ-

ations, including situations of conflict

* A trainer in authentic communication and facilitator. Stud-ies (Cycle 1) in psychology with mastery in a clinical-intercultural option.

J2 How to Speak About Sensitive Themes at Schoolwith Sivane Hirsch*/primary and secondary (offered in French)

Sensitive themes touching on knowledge should be ad-dressed with finesse, sensitivity and caution as they may solicit feelings of indignation, unease, and abjection or of contempt in students. They can bring controversy (wear-ing the Hijab) and may solicit strong emotions (Holocaust). They touch the boundaries of sensitivity, of discretion and of the ease of privacy.

Several studies show that educators at all levels try to avoid sensitive themes. They do not feel legitimately mandated to cover these themes and consider themselves as not having the knowledge to unravel the issues in all their complexity, worried also about confrontations in the classroom and a loss of control over their teaching. And yet, sensitive themes, because they are at the heart of social debates and touch our values and our social images, can arise in class and do, even when we are not ready to address them.In this workshop, we will reflect on the challenges posed by sensitive themes for those who wish to speak about them and support them. We will suggest some guiding principles to address this in school, and will consider different con-texts of diversity, across the presentation of the pedagogic-al guide «How to address sensitive subjects with students », prepared with the Centre d’intervention pédagogiqe en contexte de diversité and the Commission scolaire Mar-guerite Bourgoeys (Hirsch, Audet & Turcotte, 2016)

* Sivan Hirsch is a professor in the Department of Education at l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. She holds a Doctorate in sociology (Paris-Descartes, la Sorbonne) and in Education (Université Laval), she is interested in the role of education in inter-community relations, and in the integration of religious and cultural diversity in schools and its contribution toward the construction of identity among young people who are part of this diversity.

J3 An IT (TICs) Toolbox for Animatorswith Marc Nolet*/ primary and secondary (offered in French)

We are in the era of School 2.0 for some time, now. As animators, it is interesting to integrate IT (TIC = Technol-ogies de l’Information et de la Communication) in order to facilitate the success of certain projects or activities. Explore 12 technological tools that are easy to use and applicable in your every-day animation. This can also reach young people “where they are at” .This workshop will be dynamic and interactive (techno-logical capsules and concrete examples). Bringing your own laptop computer would be a plus. You do not need to be an expert, but come with a spirit of openness. (Completely up-to-date, this workshop is the follow-up to the workshop “The IT Toolkit for Animators” presented at Congrès 2013).

* Marc Nolet, Animator and storyteller with the Commission sco-laire de la Baie-James.

J4 Which Professionalization for Animators?with Jacques Cherblanc*/ primary and secondary (offered in French)

Since the creation of the Animation Service in 2001, it ap-pears that, if the spiritual dimension justifies the service in the Education Act (Article 36), spirituality renders it dif-ficult to define or to help a parent quickly understand…. Or a minister !This workshop will present the results of a research pro-ject conducted with Animators since 2012 on their pro-fessionalization. From this research emerge diverse find-ings that will be discussed in the workshop in order to think of the future of the service and its professionals, all the while keeping in mind the current ideological con-text. We will work, then, on 3 fundamental issues that will allow us to construct that which the service brings which is unique in the schools and for the students. These issues are identity, formation(education/training), and acknow-ledgement.

* Jacques Cherblanc, professor of the Department of Human Sci-ences at l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Doctoral thesis on the Service of Animation.

J5 Learning to Adjust Your “Inner Weather”, is to Explore One’s “Inner Horizons”!with Manon Jean*/ primary (offered in French)

This training responds to the expectations of Animators who accompany teachers wishing to discover a different approach to well-being and flourishing. It is no longer the responsibility of the teacher to take on ALL of the emotions of the child, but more-so, to guide them to-ward a self-appropriation of their own emotions. “Arbre en Coeur” teaches a way of life for the teacher (or Anima-tor) so that they may guide the child from their own ex-

periences. This training brings with it a number of playful tools in order to favour the personal flourishing of each participant.

* Manon Jean is the founder of Arbre en Coeur, and animator of workshops for the Commission scolaire Chemin du Roy. She is au-thor of three books on the emotional management of children, which are published with éditions C.A.R.D. and sold in Canada and in Europe. For three years, she has participated in psychological research directed by professors of l’UQTR. A conference animator, she has written two television series on the subject, directed and produced by TVCogeco and broadcast in the province.

J6 “The Great Thirsts- The Search for Meaning and the Construction of Identity” Documentary & Animationby Delphine Piperni/primary and secondary (offered in French)

Les grandes soifs(The Great Thirsts), a 52-minute film on young people and their search for meaning. For over a year, the director followed four young people, age 15 to 20, who bring a critical look at their society and who search, in their own way, for solutions to better live their transition toward adulthood. Following the viewing, Del-phine Piperin will question the Animators on the themes that nurtured her creative process: Are young Québecers lacking tools to “live better”? Are they lacking a sense of “magic” and rituals? Is the Animator the only member of the school community (and even, of the society!) to be able to awaken these profound reflections in the stu-dent? And is it the role of the Animator to create a feeling of community with their students (to counter their soli-tude) and organize rites of passage towards adulthood?

* Delphine Piperni, director, is associated since Fall of 2015 with Éducation connexion with which she organizes viewings of her film with young people in secondary 4 & 5, followed by an in-class animation. The blog www.lesgrandessoifs.org offers a pan-oply of inspiring resources for young people to allow them to pursue their reflections.

J7 Our Past Enlightens Our Road Forward: Bill 118 and Beyond….with Dora Cesta, Frank Lofeodo*/primary and secondary (offered in English & French)

A bi-lingual workshop that will explore Bill 118, which gave birth to the work of Spiritual Care, Guidance and Community Involvement Animation, and is our best tool to defend a profession which is Turned Toward the Fu-ture. Samples of work taken from Animators work will serve as examples of practical applications for Bill 118.

* From the C. S. English-Montréal School Board , Dora Cesta is Assistant Director of Student Services. Frank Lofeodo is Consult-ant-Responsible for the Spiritual & Community Animation Team and the Guidance Counsellor Team.

The presentation will draw a picture of young people’s engagement in 2016, will address cer-tain challenges such as the low voter participation, and will present a collaborative track between Animators and l’INM. CLOSING CONFERENCE

No excuses, No limits !with Luca “Lazylegs” Patueli

Luca “Lazylegs” Patueli says he uses his crutches like we use shoes. They are accessories and not a necessity. What ever one’s age, race, gender or abilities, everyone can dance. Dance is that secret buried in each of us. Some decide to share it, others, to save it for themselves. Con-scious or not, life is a dance. Our mouvements, our inspir-ations, our heartbeats create a rhythm. The least of our gestures can be transformed into a benefit in our lives. When we move, we put ourselves “out-there”, carried by

energy, our emotions and the challenges we face. The choice belongs to us as to the way we transmit our dance in the world. It is our expression and gives us access to our inner force. Dance invites us to overcome our lim-its. So enjoy life fully by dancing and by inviting young people to enter into the dance in the most beautiful way.
