Who ordered up this weather?? Both economically and

weatherly lol. I can bet that everyone is ready for a better season both ways. I have taken some time off from writing in the paper up until

now, really trying to sort some things out and put the publication in the right direction/ and get ready to go to war for the people in 2012. Since the election last year this paper has accomplished many things. We have placed a paper in metropolitan St Louis Mo area, we have survived what most people say has been the coldest winter in many years. The only thing that got us to this point is a ton of hard work and a relentless support of our thousands of readers

who pick this paper up, or hit one of our two websites.

Just recently we have switched the “dealmaker” paper to a car magazine. Amerishop.biz will be the new brand name for the retail version of our paper. In these times of uncertainty, only the most faithful in the magazine business will continue to grow

because they can offer the public what they want and need to make them happy. Amerishop is that loud voice down every street educating Americans on the importance of supporting your local hometown business owners. WE NEED JOBS, but we also need to make sure our business owners can support the jobs with customers. Not everything is about how much money you save, most of the time it should be about the VALUE you receive. Make no mistake about it. In my opinion NO ONE BEATS some of our deals, and we are all about giving value to our readers online and in this paper.

One of the most important things that can be taught to people in America is the importance of being part of the solution and

stop causing the problem. When you look in the mirror and see the person you are....ask yourself if the way you are buying products for your family is helping or hurting your local economy. If you are buying imports that give nothing back to our economy the answer in my opinion is ABSOLUTELY YES we are part of the problem if we make excuses for why we support free trade countries that do not represent our values. Remember Made in the USA???? What happened to that?

Moving on. I have had some conversations in regards to the election of 2012. There is much work to do by every citizen to bring back the stability to this area that once was enjoyed by everyone. I have been all but begged by

some people asking that I run as a Republican in 2012. I will not begin to turn my head on the needs of the people by supporting either of these two corrupt parties that support mostly the people with the most money to help pay for their agenda’s in my opinion.

I am an Independent and will be running again as an Independent in 2012.I believe in:1. Consumer Education to buy products from American business2. More Shop Local Programs/ Support business owners that support YOUR VALUES not our enemies3. Small Business Loan Programs To Put People Back To Work4. Less Taxes5. Less Government

6. More Personal Responsibility7. Incentives for employers to want to hire and keep more employees8. I believe in manufacturing in America again and will fi ght to see it back9. Welfare Reform to put people back to work10. Let farmers farm, less restrictions on who can sell crops from their farms, and lift subsidy’s and let farmers work their land11. Support our troops12. Support our elderly as they have supported us

I would love to hear some follow-up to this commentary, feel free to write in and share those thoughts if you can keep it civil. email it in at [email protected]

So you have that business trip coming up to Saint Louis and

need some advice? As a business owner one thing that you can track throughout time is the quality of service one company provides verses the other. Unfortunately, service is not something that comes in high on the list of priorities of some companies. Quite simply put, professional minded responsible people are hard to come by in these times. A couple of weekends ago, I took at trip on the Amtrak again, yeah it was a fun time. The train was right on time and the view was remarkable along the River Run all the way up to Saint Louis.

When a company or person stands out for their accomplishments its just the right thing to do to bring it up and tell your friends. Ok friends, I am telling you that our experience in St Louis was the best that I have ever had in regards to service of customers. We checked into the Hilton Inn at 400 Olive Street in downtown area. If I were to rank their service to their customers on a scale of 1 to 10. Hands down, it would be a 10. I

don’t talk up the service of others much, but in a case like this I just had to. There were 4 specifi c occurrences at the Hotel that were handled perfectly by the staff at the Hilton. Exceptionally clean, very friendly and very responsive to our needs. That’s the ticket to any companies success story. Personal attention and professional service. On this business trip to begin a new paper for Deal Maker in St Louis, Professional service and timely business practices were a breath of fresh air to see.

There were many attractions for us to do close to the Hilton over the weekend. Within walking distance. This is a trip that I am suggesting you and your spouse must take. Jump on the Amtrak and spend a couple of days in downtown Saint Louis. The Hilton Inn is in the heart of downtown and the price you pay is well worth it. A 5 star Hotel with the best service by far that I have witnessed in the Hotel Business. While your up their you

can walk to or hop a cab to• Rams Field• Cardinals Field• Several Shops and Downtown Eatery places• Blues Hockey• Towering buildings to explore• The Arch is less then 1 mile away• The St Louis Ferry is 1.2 miles• The original City Hall Museum is less then 1 mile away

You can watch the Giant Screened fi lm about Lewis and Clark on their journey to claim the west while you wait on the Arch to become available to see St Louis from a panoramic view. Get your reservations in now while the rates for the Hotel and the train are lower then the in season rate.

Dodge is turning up the heat in the full-size SUV segment,

introducing a new affordable performance package for the all-new 2011 Dodge Durango SUV - the Dodge Durango Heat. Designed to complement the performance-tuned Durango R/T, the new Heat package delivers aggressive styling, the high-performing 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with 295 horsepower and a surprisingly affordable price. With a starting U.S. Manufacturer’s Retail Price (MSRP) of $30,295 (excluding destination), the Dodge Durango Heat will be available at dealerships across the country in the Spring of 2011.

“Durango Heat is about handling performance and a street presence that puts the sport in sport- utility,”

said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand - Chrysler Group LLC. “The unibody rear-wheel-drive (available all-wheel-drive), two-row exclusive seating configuration makes this the lightest Durango model. A world-class double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension make Heat a handling champ that moves out smartly with 295 horsepower, a dual-exhaust, tuned air induction, custom

20-inch Satin Carbon finished wheels while delivering ultimate utility with more storage room at 50 cubic feet than anything it competes with. The Durango Heat also is among the most efficient in its class at 23 miles per gallon on the highway. For the money, there’s truly nothing like it on the market.”

From the outside, the Durango Heat and the R/T have a striking resemblance. Both feature a unique fascia with fog lamps, a color-matched grille and dark headlamp bezels.

The color-matched body kit, wheel lips and rear fascia with integrated dual chrome exhaust outlets, give the Heat a lower stance.

Built on the Durango’s new unibody platform, which is 25 percent stiffer than the Durango it replaces, the five-passenger Heat also shares R/T’s performance-biased engineering, including its aggressive suspension tuning, performance steering, unique 20-inch wheels with all-season performance tires (three-season high-performance tires for even greater grip and response also are available), a 20-mm lower ride height, tuned dual-exhaust and a modernized interior that holds drivers in their seats.

Where the R/T is powered by the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, the Heat is powered by the new Pentastar V-6 engine. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine is an all-new design, featuring double-overhead camshafts (DOHC) and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60 degree configuration. Contributing to best-in-class V-6 towing at 6,200 lbs. and a top speed of 130 miles per hour, the engine delivers 295 horsepower (216 kW) at 6,350 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. (353 N*m) of torque at 4,500 rpm. The EPA fuel economy miles per gallon (mpg) (City/Hwy) are 16/23 for the rear-wheel-drive model and 16/22 for the all-wheel-drive model.

While Heat entices with performance-biased styling and handling, the newest Durango also maintains SUV capability with room for five passengers and 50 cubic feet of storage space--more storage capacity behind the second row than any other five-passenger vehicle on the market- including 5.9 cubic feet

of under-floor storage. As in the R/T, Heat comes standard with Uconnect Voice Command and a premium 506 Watt Alpine audio system with 10 speakers, including a subwoofer.

About DurangoFrom its sleek exterior design

to its modern, spacious interior, and intelligent, fuel-efficient and powerful powertrain options, the 2011 Dodge Durango is all-

new from the inside out. And the changes are more than skin deep. The Durango’s unibody structure is more than 25 percent stiffer than its predecessor. The end result is a vehicle with crossover versatility, SUV capability and performance in a different league than its competitive class.

Durango customers live busy lives. They need a vehicle that is spacious and flexible enough to haul three rows of

passengers (Citadel, CrewLux, Crew, Express) and their gear, but powerful and agile enough to keep it fun. Durango customers are looking for the perfect balance of functional versatility and luxury at an outstanding value. Dodge’s newest SUV is the only vehicle in the segment that will meet their needs.

In the early decades of Lake of the Ozarks history there were

many “characters” in business at the Lake. Old timers like to recall Quillie Hunter, a quirky native of the Osage Beach area who dabbled in real estate and many other pursuits. He predicted that a day would come when highway frontage along 54 in Osage Beach would bring $1,000 a foot. He was laughed at and called “crazy Qullie.” But Quillie had the last laugh. That day came and went and is now well into the past.

There was the Okie from Oklahoma, Tex Bemis, who tried everything from photographing people on his collection of stuffed animals like buffalo, to operating excursion boats, roadside food stands, cafes and the Ozark Water Ski Thrill Show. He had a roadside barbecue place with food served from a covered wagon. He

had a sign painter decorate the canvas and the painter mistakenly spelled the word “sandwiches” as “sandwitches.” Tex loved it and kept it just the way it was!

There was Larry Albright, the cat lover who kept so many cats at home most people

wouldn’t enter his house. He had a wooden leg and was often called “Halfbright” but he was a shrewd businessman and did well with his gift shops. He billed himself

“King of the

Souvenirs” and came to own many pieces of valuable property around the Lake.

The list goes on but this story is about Harry Frack who was born near Columbus Junction, Iowa, in 1882. As a young man he followed construction work in the oil fi elds of Illinois and Oklahoma then returned to Iowa to run a mercantile business.

About 1929 or 1930 he bought a farm near Fortuna and would have tried farming if he had not visited old Bagnell during the dam construction period. Bagnell was a boom town and it inspired him to open a meat market and grocery store in Damsite, the construction-workers town that existed below the dam for just two years. His business did exceptionally well. With the dam’s completion and the demise of Damsite, he married Olive

he married Olive Cromer and invested his money in an acre of land in Osage Beach along Highway 54 where Walmart is located today. He vowed he was going to put as many businesses as was physically possible on that one acre of land and call it “Frack’s Acre.” At the time there were no other businesses even close to himeven close to him on either side of the highway. He was “out in the woods” as people said and predicted he’d go broke in no time at all.

But Harry persisted and within a few years had done exactly what he said and his business enterprises boomed. The photo that accompanies this article, photographer unknown circa 1940, shows a street view of Frack’s Acre which included a barber shop, meat market, grocery store, pool hall, ice and cold storage

facility, beer parlor, café, pottery shop, sandwich shop and a barber shop. The pottery shop structure was unique and fashioned of native rock.

His wife, Olive, died in January 1943, and in October 1944, Harry married Ida Graves of Camdenton. Harry retired in 1947 and died in October 1950. His widow continued to operate his businesses for a number of years.

The unique architecture of the pottery shop and the twin arches of the café and meat market, so reminiscent of McDonald’s Restaurant arches, were landmarks along the highway and lasted well into the 1960s.

These early day “characters” have all left a legacy that now livens up the pages of history at Lake of the Ozarks.

Per Facebook friend, John Put-nam, who lives 10 miles east

of the major damage, reports that local officials say 25% of the town is gone or heavily damaged. Peo-ple are still trapped this morning. 95 confirmed dead expected to go to 400. Citizen volunteers are be-ing organized at Missouri South-ern State University.

John has a very small vacant rent house on our farm where a couple or 4 guys (crowded) could stay if they are able to come and help. More heavy weather headed their way today and tomorrow.

For those who prefer to donate through a reliable church rather than the Red Cross, tax deductible contributions can be sent to John’s church which was not destroyed but is adjacent to the “war zone” and heavily involved in neighbor-

hood recovery:New Creation ChurchTornado Relief Fund1831 S. Connor Ave.Joplin, MO 64804New Creation Church is 2

blocks from one of the worst hit areas between St. John’s and 20th St in Joplin and will be the stag-ing area for our group to reach out into the community. There will be coffee and donuts for breakfast and

lunch for whoever can come. Meet at the church for a specific job as-signment in the local neighbor-hood. Please bring pick-up trucks, chains saws (if experienced), yard tools, work gloves, etc.

People who can help before Saturday can call Pastor Cliff Man-sley to learn of immediate needs in the neighborhood. (417) 782-8200, or call John at 417-674-1946.

Joplin Update

During the construction of Bag-nell Dam from 1928 to 1931,

old Bagnell was a boom town and grew to a population of more than 3,000 in a matter of a few months. The service road from old Bagnell to the dam construction site was four miles long and the hills and valleys along the way were densely populated with the tents and shacks put up by the men who came from all corners of the United States to get a job. The Great Depression was on and millions of men were out of work. The dam was the only on-going large scale construction project in the United States during the Great Depression.

On the service road were sev-eral general merchandise stores erected by local businessmen. A tent city developed around each one. Two of the largest tempo-rary settlements were Victor City and Damsite. The latter settlement grew to a population that rivaled old Bagnell.

Violence and crime of all kinds was rampant in the temporary set-tlements. The Miller County sheriff had to employ 35 deputies to keep law and order in the area. One of

the chief problems was moonshine whiskey and bootlegging because Prohibition was also in effect. Ille-gal stills were raided on an almost daily basis and rum runners were constantly cooling their heels in local jails.

When dam construction was complete, bootleg whiskey was also a problem on the Bagnell Dam Strip. One enterprising maker of white lightning even had his still on a boat in the Lake. Neverthe-less, the dance halls and saloons along the Strip never lacked for intoxicating drink. It was said that moonshine came in the back door by the pint and went out the front door in the belly of customers.

The White House Hotel, shown in the photo accompanying this ar-ticle (photographer unknown), is where moonshine was rumored to be available. Lawrence Fry who operated the White House Hotel did not drink but his partner, Bill Hargis, did. It is said that Hargis kept his moonshine hidden in the weeds behind the White House so he’d have plenty of it to keep his poker-playing friends well wa-tered during their notorious late night poker games in the hotel basement.

Moonshine on the Bagnell Dam Strip

The White House Hotel is where moonshine was rumored to be available.

The 18th amendment was re-pealed in two stages in 1933 – first beer in the spring and then a few months later, hard liquor. Prohi-bition thus came to an end. The nation celebrated and so did the merchants along the Strip. “Beer A Boom to Lake Business,” said a local newspaper headline on April 15, 1933. “The return of legal beer spelled the return of better busi-ness for business houses in the lake region. The long desired beverage was met with popular acclaim every place and many dealers stocks were quickly depleted the opening day.

“Resort owners throughout the lake area stated that beer was ac-counting for a good percentage of their business and that if sales con-tinued at the present level the com-ing summer should see the end of the depression locally. . . Only one lake distributor [was] foresighted enough to envision the demand and as a result, the Ozark Lake Distrib-uting Company’s dealers of Goetz Country Club were in an enviable position among their fellow deal-ers for a time.”

Low- and No-Carb diets have

been pretty popu-lar over the years. But after further re-search, there is more to a Carbohydrate

than what we previously thought! What is a carbohydrate? Carbo-

hydrates or Carbs, are basically made up of sugars, fi ber, and starches. They are one of the three major components needed in our daily dietary calorie in-take; with the other two components being proteins and fats.

Carbohydrates (which when di-gested turn into glucose or sugar) can be placed into two main categories; complex and simple:

Complex Carbohydrates* These foods are made up of three

or more sugar molecules. The sugars from Complex Carbs are broken down or digested more slowly and therefore not absorbed as quickly into the blood-stream. These foods keep our energy levels more even throughout the day, and contain more fi ber, vitamins, and minerals. (Unrefi ned Carbs; or foods in their most natural form.)

Simple Carbohydrates*These foods are made up of one or

two sugar molecules. The sugars from simple carbs are digested very quick-ly and absorbed into the bloodstream right away; making that source of energy available immediately for the body to use. If that source of energy isn’t used right away, we experience that sudden drop in our blood sugar levels which is known as a “sugar crash”. (Refi ned Carbs; or foods which have been stripped of most of their nutrition.)

Essentially, carbohydrates should make up approximately 50% of our

daily dietary intake with the majority of that percentage coming from Com-plex Carbs. This form of Carbohy-drates not only provides the body with energy, but it also helps our brain and nervous system to function properly. Our bodies require a constant supply of energy just for our daily functions. If we aren’t getting enough Complex Carbs in our diets, we set ourselves up for fatigue and tiredness, illness-es, and lack of concentration, just to name a few. But if we are consuming too many Simple Carbs, we not only could experience the same symp-toms as not getting enough Complex Carbs but could also potentially lead to mood swings, diabetes, other ill-nesses, and weight gain.

Some examples of Simple Carbs are soft drinks, sweets/candies, cakes, pastries/doughnuts, processed foods such as white rice, white bread and pasta, table sugar (sucrose), most packaged breakfast cereals, and fruit juices.

Some examples of Complex Carbs are whole grain breads, pastas, and cereals, oatmeal, potatoes, brown rice, and some fruits and vegetables such as carrots, peas, oranges, straw-berries, apples, and grapefruit.

So if you’re trying to lose weight – instead of cutting all Carbs out of your diet simply cut back on the Sim-ple Carbs and add in more Complex Carbs. Doing this will not only im-pact your cardiovascular health in a more positive way, you’ll also notice the positive changes on the outside as well.

*These are also referred to as Refi ned (Simple) and Unrefi ned (Complex) Car-bohydrates.
