Dear Members The Mother’s Day lunch that took place on Sun-day 1st May was well attended and everyone was treated to a day of good food, fun and entertain-ment. I thank all who made the day one to re-member. After the lunch, those who stayed back journeyed through nostalgia as they indulged in childhood games like Chongkak, karem, chiki, etc. Sadly I was unable to stay but those that re-mained back, reported an afternoon of great fun. It is not often these days that I put a note in the Newsletter but here are two items:

Rudeness of members

Lately, when announcements are being made at Sunday lunches, it is noticed that some members keep talking, making it difficult for those trying to hear the speaker. This to me is the height of rudeness and it is only common courtesy to be silent while someone is speaking - no names no packdrill - but the members concerned should know better than to be so rude.

Reservation of tables and chairs is NOT ON

At the last lunch (the Mothers Day lunch) some members were telling others looking for seats that the empty seats at their table was 'reserved' or being kept for others yet to arrive. This issue was discussed by earlier Management Committees and decisions made then that the practice would not be allowed. At its last meeting the current Management Committee discussed the matter and maintained the position that there is to be no reservation of tables and seats, in other words it is first come first served. Generally the system works quite well but if any member feels that other members are not doing the 'right thing' please let a Management Committee member know of the circumstances. Frank Hedges , Secretary

The significant loss recorded for the year 2010/2011 has prompted the Management Com-mittee to review the membership rebates and at the March Management Committee meet-ing, a decision was made to withdraw the rebates. This was reported by our Treasurer at the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 10 April 2011.

The Committee is however committed to providing members with the best affordable prices for outings and other activities that would incur a cost to members.

The many activities, functions and events throughout the year are organised by a myriad of volunteers from the membership and every effort is made to ensure that overhead costs are kept to a minimum.

Members will be able to purchase Dance tickets for themselves at discounted prices and will continue to enjoy all the current facilities and activities the Association provides through the generosity of the volunteers and I encourage the general membership to con-sider being part of this entourage of volunteers. Thank you to all our volunteers for making the Eurasian Association a fun and informa-tive organisation that is committed to preserving a unique heritage and culture. PAPIAH KRISTANG—SPEAK KRISTANG Malacca’s 500th Anniversary

To mark the 500th Anniversary of the Portuguese landing in Malacca – August 1511 – a short history of this event will be featured in our newsletters leading up to August when we will celebrate this momentous event in the history of some of the Eurasians who originated in Malacca. We will continue featuring the Kristang language in September.

THE PORTUGUES CONQUEST OF MALACCA The second attack, 10 August 1511—continued from last month

As in the first attack, the main object of the Portuguese was to capture the bridge; but this time d’Albuquerque meant to hold it. Some days before his conference with the officers he had thought out a new idea. This was to use an exceptionally tall junk as a kind of fortified siege ladder, which could be floated towards the bridge, and grappled to it. It would over-tower the bridge, and from its commanding position the attackers could rake the bridge from end to end which their gunfire and stones, and make it completely untenable. Unfortunately at first for his plan, the junk was found to have too great a draught for the shallow waters of the river. The attack had to be postponed until the spring tide, which would refloat the junk and carry it down towards the bridge. Meanwhile the Malays, guess-ing his intention, did their best to set fire to the craft by sending towards it on the falling tide blazing boats and barges; but all their efforts were foiled by the Portuguese.

At last the junk was refloated. The Portu-guese bombarded the city during the night of 9 August, and on the next day the attack be-gan. D’Albuquerque having posted gun-boats on either flank of the attacking boats, made his way to the north part of the city where, after a brief but fierce struggle he succeeded in effecting a landing. Meanwhile Antonio d’Abreu, in face of furious fire from the bridge, which he relentlessly returned, had suc-ceeded in grappling the junk to the bridge, and by a heavy fire, swept the defenders from it. These took up a position behind palisades lying between the bridge and the mosque; but fire from the gunboats in the harbour com-pelled them to retire to the mosque. D’Albu-querque now gave orders for the mosque to be captured. The Malays thereupon evacuated it, and were followed in swift pursuit by a detachment under de Lima. Suddenly the latter’s troops found themselves face to face with fresh reinforcements under the command of the Sul-tan and his son Ahmad. In the band were twenty fighting elephants which now charged the Portuguese. Undis-mayed de Lima pierced the leading elephant in the eye with his spear and the maddened brute turned in the narrow road and fled, scattering the Malays, and infecting the other animals with its rage and terror. Continued next month..... *** An interesting note – the names d’Abreu and de Lima are familiar to me as they appear in the Boudeville family tree and I know families who originated from Burma with these surnames. I would be interested to hear from anyone who also has links to these families. Genevieve De Souza

The menu will strictly be Portuguese dishes with main meals at the usual $6.00 and cakes will be sold as normal. The Frol de la mar, Flor de la Mar or Flor do Mar (Flower of the Sea) was a Portu-guese nau (carrack) of 400 tons, which over nine years participated in decisive events in the Indian Ocean until her sinking in November 1511. There travelled Afonso de Albuquerque re-turning from the conquest of Malacca, with a huge booty and treasure to the Portuguese king, lost off the coast of Sumatra, making it one of the mythical lost treasures. A replica of the Flor de la Mar houses the Maritime Museum in Malacca.
