New York District, Division 15 June 2012

Hello New York Division 15 Key Clubs!I hope you guys did well on your end of the year testing

and finding jobs or other things to begin doing for the summer. I

would just l ike to take the time to tel l you that Key Club doesn’t

end at summer time! Try to get your club to do a meet up or a

few small projects over the summer to keep the Key Club spirit

going! I know a club in our district is doing a meet up at Panera

over the summer. Little meet ups and small projects are fun to do

and bring everyone together for a few hours of service or just

chil l ing. You could even just brain storm for the next school year

of service. I f your club has a meet up, take some pictures and let

me know how it went! I 'd love to hear from you all .

Also, there are a few reminders: Monthly report forms

need to be fi l led in al l summer and handed in on time, which is

the 7th of every month. I f your club has not sent in the Election

Report Forms, then they should have received an email from me,

and need to do it as soon as possible. Both of these things need

to be CC:ed to me as well . Keep checking the facebook page for

other l ittle updates and reminders!

This summer I 'm hoping to have a meet up, possible in

Saratoga. There I would l ike to try and do a bake sale or some

other fundraiser for Eliminate, as well as just hang out and get to

know everyone better.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions you

have about anything.

Thank you

Thank you,

Lt. Governor, Caitl in Roberts

Why Volunteer? Why should kids volunteer there time?

Personally, I bel ieve that volunteering your time is one of the most

important things to do, not to mention the best way to spend your time. Key

Club is al l about volunteering your time to help other people around your

community and globally. So, Why Volunteer?

I love volunteering. For me its al l about seeing all the people that

you are affecting by spending a few hours of your time helping. A lot of

people our age dont tend to donate there time for the happiness of other

people. This is something I wish to improve. Volunteering is not only

rewarding but fun. I f you get a good group of people to volunteer with it

becomes more like hanging out , as long as you sti l l focus on the job. I

have volunteered at a lot of different places from churches, to help

teachers , to Key Club events. On top of that, you can volunteer your time

towards something you believe in or by doing something that you enjoy. I f

you enjoy reading, read to the elderly or to l ittle kids. I f you l ike art,

volunteer at an art studio cleaning or helping kids with art. Afterward, I

know that my efforts have helped someone else and that they are grateful

for my time and energy. I love volunteering and wil l continue to do so

during Key Club and after Key Club. I ts something that I am passionate

about.

Upcomming EventsDivisional and a future Meet upAs far as upcoming events: I real ly want to get a divisional going and set

up really soon. The thing is, last time I set one up a got a lot of emails

saying you guys had SAT's and were busy, so I need to know a date that is

good for you all . The divisional wil l be at Fort Ann Central most l ikely, on a

weekend, because I work during the week. I f anyone has a specific date to

throw out or any dates that they are going on vacation, please let me know.

I wil l have the date picked out after ICON.

Another thing that I am planning on doing over the summer is some

sort of small meet up, involving Eliminate. I t was suggested that we do

some sort of bake sale at the race track or something? That wil l be talked

about at the divisional as well as more information about Eliminate wil l be

given out. I f you have any suggestions or ideas feel free to let me know

ahead of time by email me or posting on the Facebook page.

A Senior's FarewellHow Key Club Has Impacted Emily's Life

I have been in Key Club since I was in seventh grade and

throughout these six years I have had the experience of doing something

for the better good. When I was seventh and eighth grade I mainly helped

out with packing care packages for soldiers and raising money for UNICEF

during Halloween and Muscular Dystrophy during the spring time. As I got

older though, I was able to branch out and start helping more because I

was able to take on more responsibi l ity. In these past couple of years, I

have helped raise money and non-perishable food items for our local Food

Pantry and I have helped set up tables and chairs for the annual Taste of

the North Country.

This past fal l I was able to help distribute lunches and cheer for the

athletes at the Hiland Park Country Club for the Fall Special Olympics and

it was one of the best experiences and it is one that I wil l never forget and I

hope to come back and help next year. Also, last June was the first time I

participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Our school

had recently received news that a fel low school mate and one of my

friends was diagnosed with cancer and that hit our small town hard. So to

help out him and his family, we raised money by sell ing T-shirts, bracelets,

and luminaries to l ight up the track that night. I walked that night with a just

healed broken leg and foot for my friend and I would do it al l over again if

asked. I also did it this year for him to celebrate being one year cancer

free! I know I wil l continue to participate in these events because over

these past six years I have learned that sometimes you need to put other

people’s needs in front of yours and to lend a helping hand when it is

needed and that is the greatest thing that Key Club has ever taught me.

Division SpotlightFort Ann at Relay for Life

This year was my first year attending the Relay for Life with my Key

Club. I t has been an incredible experience for me. During the time, I got to

walk and talk with al l the members of my club. I loved seeing everyone

interacting with each-other. There were board games and tons of snacks

for us all to enjoy. We did get rained-out though, but al l-in al l I had a lot of

fun. I t was a truly wonderful experience for me, and I hope to continue to

attend next year.

Major Emphasis Project"Children: Their Future, Our Focus"

Major Emphasis Project is just about serving our future, Children.

Back at Key Club's first international convention, in 1 946, the members

wanted to come up with something that would use all the efforts of al l Key

Club's to focus on. Now Major Emphasis is helping us achieve that.

Children all around the world wil l grow up to be our future and its

important to make sure that we help them in any way that we can. The

international Projects committee is helping team up with the three major

fundraisers for the Major Emphasis Project. Fundraising for any of those

charities is one way to help globally, but you can also focus on children at a

local scale.

You and your club can read to children or tutor them after school.

During the summer, you can partner up with a l ibrary and do a summer

reading day, focusing on some summer books and maybe doing a few

games or a snack time. You can do a teddy picnic for younger kids, where

they bring their favorite stuffed friend and have a picnic with some Key

Club role models. Your club can also do a “field day”, a games day at a

park or a school to promote fitness through games and races. Or have a

“parents night out” where parents can drop off there children and go out for

the night. Then, have stations of games, activities, or even a movie set up.

I f you charge a few dollars for each kid, you could then donate that money

to one of the global fundraisers! Talk to your local Builders Club about

attending one of there meetings and working with those members on

different projects they might be doing. The possibi l ity are really endless.

International Project and ProgramsTo all members of the mighty New YorkDistrict Key Club:

The International Projects Committee for the 201 2 – 201 3 service

year is up and running. The three district projects for this year are March

of Dimes, UNICEF, and The Children’s Miracle Network. This year the

district is striving for bigger and better things, therefore each key clubber

must put both feet forward in conducting as much service towards these

charities as possible to not only meet, but to surpass the district goals.

March of Dimes is an amazing organization that has a mission of

preventing premature birth, birth defects, infant mortal ity and improving the

overal l health of al l babies. Composed of many volunteers, researchers,

educators, outreach workers, and advocates, they who work together to

carry out their mission of March of Dimes through community services,

education, advocacy, and research to save babies’ l ives. The district goal

for March of Dimes is $1 5,000 as well as 1 5,000 service hours

UNICEF is an international organization that is even mandated by the

United Nations to advocate for the protection of Children’s rights, to help

meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their ful l

potential . This includes child survival and development, providing basic

education with gender equality, providing treatment to HIV/AIDS infected

children, and to better a policy of advocacy and partnership. The entirety

of this organization is based on good practices and developing a

relationship not only with the people they are helping but also the

volunteers and donors. The district goal for UNICEF is $50,000 as well as

25,000 service hours

The Children’s Miracle Network is a international organization with an

outstanding mission. Their goal is to actively supply and improve the

health care for mil l ions of young individuals much like yourselves, al l

around the world. By generating funds and awareness, the Children’s

Miracle Network is now in over 1 70 hospitals nationwide. In generating not

only hours of service but also donations you are impacting young lives who

are battl ing every type of childhood il lness and injury by giving them health

and happiness. The district goal for the Children’s Miracle Network is

$1 5,000 as well as 1 0,000 service hours.

For al l three of the above charities it is up to the mighty key clubbers of the

New York District to come forth and provide as much service as possible.

The service ideas are endless!

International ConventionInternation Convention is comming up!

Personally, I am extremely excited about Icon! I have never been to

Florida, or to Disney, and to get the chance to spend time there with my

fel low Key Clubbers is amazing. I am counting down the days! During Icon,

there is going to be a bunch of fantastic workshops that wil l help me be

more informed on things l ike Eliminate. There wil l also be a huge Dance 2

Eliminate, which should be extremely fun!

One of the speakers, Eden Sher, from “The Middle” is someone who

I used to watch on TV when I was younger. I remember how happy she

was, even when she failed at things in high school. I cant wait to hear what

she has to say! Our entertainer Justin Wil lman from C”upcake Wars”

should also be interesting to watch. I didnt even know he could do magic!

Im planing on checking out LEGO Imagination Center’s in my free time. I

love lego, being the geek that I am.

I expect that at ICON I wil l be able to learn and have once in a l ife

time experiences that wil l help me further in Key Club. My expectation is

just that, this trip wil l be simply amazing. I know it wil l just blow my mind

away and I would l ike to thank everyone that made it possible for me to go.

I real ly do appreciate it. Thank You.
