PRESIDENT’S  MESSAGE   Greetings! We have less than one month to go before we kick off our major events of 2016! We greatly appreciate the incredible efforts put forth by staff and volunteers who have been very busy preparing for:

• Golf Tournament on June 6th; • Run to the Farmers Market Half Marathon on June 18th; • Farmers’ Market opening June 18th; • 111th Millarville Races on July 1st; • 20th Millarville Rodeo on July 22 to 24th; • 109th Priddis & Millarville Fair on August 20 and 21st; and • Millarville Christmas Market November 10 to 13th.

As we prepare for the events, we are also looking ahead at improving the site at MRAS. To that end, we are pleased to report that Integrity Post Structure has generously donated the materials and labour in the construction of a permanent multiuse open structure on the north side of the grand stand. Thank you to Rick Dalton for coordinating the contact with Jerry Myer, owner of Integrity, and Jerry’s team in bringing the project together. We see the structure serving the track events along with a permanent covering for the Farmers’ and Christmas markets. We are at the six-month mark in our MRAS year and financially we are sitting very close to budget. With uncertainty in Alberta economy, we continue to monitor costs and revenue streams. Thank you to staff and event chairs for your support in this endeavor. The MRAS summer students have started – Ashley Mabbott is helping in the office, and Samuel Desaulniers in helping Frank on the maintenance side. Please say hello when you are visiting the racetrack. I am looking forward to a great summer with lots of activity around MRAS. I hope to see many of you at the Golf tournament, and on opening day of the market and at the “Run to the Farmers Market” Half Marathon. Brent Foster MRAS President

Sam Desauliners is working in Grounds Maintenance this summer assisting Frank with a variety of on-going projects. Sam will be returning to SAIT this fall to continue his studies in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Jared Kientz is also working in Grounds Maintenance on a part time basis to assist with the Farmers’ Market and pre/post event support throughout the season. Jared will be returning to St. Mary’s University this fall to continue his degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in History.

MRAS  FACILITY  CALENDAR   As of June 1st we now have a live event calendar on our website. This calendar allows you to scroll forward and back throughout the year to check the availability of our facility. Once a booking is made in the office it will automatically update this calendar, keeping the information current. Access to the calendar can be found on the Home Page of the Website, or it is available to you under the events drop down tab at the top of the Website. The monthly event calendar will no longer be part of Track Watch. Many thanks to Kent Ladell for creating this calendar for us and to Katie Yablecki for importing all the 2016/2017 bookings.

MILLARVILLE  HALF  MARATHON   The 5th Annual Millarville “Run To The Farmers’ Market” Half Marathon is coming up on Saturday, June 18. About 1,000 participants will be running/walking from Black Diamond to finish at the 34th season opening day of the Millarville Farmers’ Market. Along with race-related spectators and a normal opening day crowd, there will likely be about 4,000-4,500 people at the Racetrack on race day. “The event was originally conceived as a way to boost attendance on one of the lower attended, ‘shoulder’ days for the Farmers’ Market,” said Race Director Rick Charlton. “In a short time, it’s become one of the premier running events in the Calgary area and an important new fundraising vehicle for the Ag Society.” The event is supported by about 150 local volunteers. Naturally, with all of those people out running the roadways, there will be an impact on local traffic patterns, albeit early in the morning. Racetrack Road will be under a “rolling closure,” enforced by MD Peace Officers, starting at about 7:50 a.m. The closure impacts the length of Racetrack Road, from Black Diamond through to Millarville Racetrack. The roadway will be reopening behind the progress of the last participant and then at 10:30 a.m. altogether. If you’re a local resident within the perimeter and want to go for a drive, please do so with care, particularly if you’re out during the peak period of roughly 8:10 a.m. through to about 9:45 a.m. Millarville Racetrack and the Farmers’ Market can be accessed in a normal manner by vehicles via Highway 549 from Turner Valley, Calgary or Okotoks directions. There will be resident awareness Open Houses in Turner Valley (Sheep River Library, 4-7 p.m., June 8) and Millarville Racetrack (4-7 p.m., June 9) if you want more information. You can also look at the “Race Info” page at www.millarvillehalfmarathon.com or give Rick a buzz at [email protected] We’re looking forward to another fun event!

PRIDDIS  &  MILLARVILLE  FAIR   Have you seen the 2016 Fair Book? You can pick up a copy in the MRAS office or view it online on the Fair event page on the MRAS website. This is a great time to start planning your entries. ShoWorks will be available for online entries after Monday, June 6th. The PayPal option for paying your entry fees online will be active on this date was well. Entries will be accepted until August 14th. There are no changes to the exhibitor, exhibit entry or admission fees for the 2016 Fair. With modest incremental costs to extend the Fair to two days, the donations that make the Fair possible are particularly important this year. We are making good progress but are shy of our donation target. If the Fair is important to you and your family and you haven’t already done so, please consider making a donation.

COUNTRY  LANE  QUILD  SHOW  –  MAY  14,  2016

The Country Lane Quilter’s Guild held a very successful quilt show at Christ Church. Members brought favorite quilts to display in the log Church, Church House, and tents. Samples of charity quilts, heart pillows, and placemats demonstrated some of the charity work that this guild continually donates. Guests enjoyed viewing a wide variety of quilts, a tasty lunch and many names were drawn for gift baskets, donated by members of the guild.

Donna Kendall was chosen by guild members as our Quilter of Distinction for this show. She asked those who previously had purchased her quilts at the Priddis and Millarville Fair auctions, or were given quilts by Donna to bring their quilt. Many proud recipients shared stories of their personal connections and the significance of their quilt. These masterpieces show Donna’s gifted abilities in creating unique and stunning designs through color, shape, and… Another of Donna’s quilts is featured in the Christ Church. She donated “Sunrise Surprise,” to the Christ Church Evening Guild in 2012, and shared her inspiration for this quilt: “As the sun rises over our eastern slopes community, the sky and hills against the mountains emerge from the darkness into a constantly shifting and changing aurora of colour and light. At some point each morning, I am again amazed by the browns and golds surrounded by a sparkle of turquoise which seems to enclose them all in a colourful haze of blending lights from dark to sunlight. And then it is gone. Just like that. And it will never again be the same. A mere moment, caught in the majestic life of the mountains while they dance with the rising sun. And I was there to see. And then it was gone.” This original designed quilt is a testament to Donna’s artistry and generosity. Donna truly is a lady of Distinction! Special thanks to the many visitors who viewed our displays, the “tent crew”, and all the members who made this day possible.

 SOUTHERN  ALBERTA  PERMACULTURE  CONVERGENCE  2016

There are many speculations about climate change, sustainability and what the future holds for us and future generations. As individuals, many things are out of our control, but we can practice Permaculture. Permaculture is a design system that aims to create sustainable human habitats, wherever you choose to live. Many Permaculture practitioners in our province are gathering together this July 8-10th in Turner Valley, to host a Permaculture gathering including hands-on workshops, tours of Permaculture properties, and a sampling of local/organic foods. Permaculture advocates aim to grow as much of their own food as possible, reduce energy use, and increase energy efficiency in housing, economics and food production. Presenters will offer workshops in: rainwater catchment, fermenting foods, creative facilitation, making paper, sustainability and economics, making herbal salves, wildcrafting medicinals, video documenting your (Permaculture) project, and using wildflowers in the landscape.
