Walkin’ Cane Mark “Tyin’ To Make You Understand”. Enable / Blind Raccoon 2015. Walkin’ Cane Mark se autoproclama discípulo directo del gran Howlin’ Wolf. Junto a la profundidad de su voz y su grasienta y sencilla forma de tocar la armónica realiza un estilo que podríamos clasificar como sofisticado pero a la vez excéntrico, siniestro, pero siempre lleno de un profundo y auténtico sentimiento. Además Walkin’ Cane Mark es también un excelente ‘story teller’ con una manera muy personal de contar sus historias, a la vez que un buen conocedor de la música de los viejos tiempos. En el 2010 Mark grabó una serie de sus canciones favoritas solamente para obsequiar a sus familiares y amigos. Después de haber remasterizado aquellas canciones, ahora han vuelto a ser reeditadas en un álbum por la compañía Enable Records. Todos los temas incluidos mantienen aquel sonido característico de las grabaciones de Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon y Muddy Waters para Chess Records. Aparte del propio Walkin’ Cane Mark a la voz y la armónica también han intervenido Kirk Hawley a la guitarra y mandolina, Brenden McBride al bajo, Gordon Lynde Jr. al bajo en tres temas y John Rumbaugh a la batería. Son doce canciones que conforman un disco sencillo y sin pretensiones pero realizado con mucho corazón. BUENO. Walkin' Cane Mark declares himself to be a direct disciple of the great Howlin' Wolf. With the depth of his voice and his greasy and plain way to play harmonica, he performs a kind of music that could be defined as sophisticated but, at the same time, eccentric and sinister but always filled with a deep genuine feeling. Besides Walkin' Cane Mark is an excellent story teller gifted with a very personal way to tell his stories together with a good knowledge of old time music. In year 2010 Mark recorded a series of their favourite songs only as a gift to relatives and friends. After remastering those songs, there have now been reissued in an album by Enable Records. All tracks included keep the characteristic sound of those old recordings by Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters for Chess Records. Besides Walkin' Cane Mark on vocals and harmonica, the other musicians involved are Kirk Hawley on guitar and mandolin, Brenden McBride on bass, Gordon Lynde Jr. on bass in three songs and John Rumbaugh on drums. Twelve songs that make up an unaffected unpretentious recording performed with sincerity and deep love. GOOD.

Little Boys Blue “Bad Love”. Jaxon / Blind Raccoon 2014. La banda Little Boys Blue se creó en 1993 por JD Taylor y Steve Patterson en Jackson, Tennessee. Después de más de veinte años juntos, el grupo se ha convertido en unos auténticos veteranos de la escena musical de Memphis y Nashville, gracias a pertenecer al grupo de artistas que giran con una cierta frecuencia junto a viejas glorias del blues y del country que en su momento grabaron con la Sun Records. Todo ello les ha servido pàra desarrollar un estilo propio en el que mezclan influencias del blues de Tennessee y Mississippi con pinceladas de rockabilly, rock y música country. Éste es su tercer álbum y el mejor hasta el momento grabado para el sello Jaxon cuyo propietario Jimmy Exum quedó profundamente impresionado cuando les vio tocar en directo por lo que no dudó un instante en proponerles la grabación de este estupendo y colosal disco. El grupo está formado por Alex Taylor guitarras, JD Taylor voz y armónica, Mark Brooks batería, Steve Patterson guitarra solista y slide, David

Thomas piano y Dave Mallard bajo y coros. Once temas que os robarán el corazón y os cargarán las pilas durante mucho tiempo. BUENISIMO. Little Boys Blue was founded in 1993 by JD Taylor and Steve Patterson in Jackson, Tennessee. After more than twenty years together, they are now renowned veterans in Memphis and Nashville music scene. They also belong to the group of artists who often tour with old rockabilly, blues and country artists who used to record with Sun Records. This experience has helped them to develop his own style that mixes different influences like Tennessee and Mississippi delta blues with drops of rockabilly, rock and country music. This is their third album and the best so far, recorded for Jaxon Records, whose owner Jimmy Exum was deeply impressed when he saw them playing live which make him to immediately ask them to record for him. The result was this excellent and superb album. The group includes Alex Taylor on guitars, JD Taylor on vocals and harmonica, Mark Brooks on drums, Steve Patterson on lead guitar and slide, David Thomas on piano and Dave Mallard on bass and backing vocals. Eleven songs that will steal your heart and make recover your energies for a very long time. GREAT.

The Jimmys “Hot Dish”. Brown Cow Productions / Blind Raccoon 2015. Aqui llega la banda perfecta para disfrutar durante una alegre fiesta de sábado noche. The Jimmys vienen desde Wisconsin para hacernos bailar con su rhythm and blues, jump swing, blues, funk, soul y algo de boogie. La mezcla no puede ser más explosiva, máxime si está perfectamente interpretada y si a esto le añadimos que grupo suena empastado y contundente, entonces el resultado no puede ser mejor y más efectivo. La banda está liderada por el teclista y cantante Jimmy Voegell, ganador de algunos premios y reconocimientos. Si a éste se le unen una poderosa sección de vientos que nos transporta al puro y limpio sonido de los arreglos Motown junto al resto de músicos realmente profesionales, el resultado no puede ser otro que un soberbio álbum lleno de matices, coherente y rico en cromatismos sonoros. Estoy mas que seguro que “Hot Dish” hará las delicias de todos cuantos lo escuchen y animará a todos los invitados con los que cuentes para esa próxima fiesta que estás preparando en tu casa o en cualquier otro lugar, eso si, debes llevar este pedazo de cd para triunfar de lleno entre tus amistades. Además la producción final se merece otro diez. ¿Qué más se puede pedir? BUENISIMO. Here comes a perfect band for a joyful Saturday night party. The Jimmys come from Wisconsin to make you dance with his rhythm and blues, jump swing, blues, funk, soul and a little bit of boogie. The mixture is totally explosive, especially if you take into account it is perfectly performed by a well teamed band like The Jimmys, so the result is a totally amazing and very effective music. The band is led by the keyboardist and singer Jimmy Voegell, winner of several awards and recognitions. If he is joined by a powerful horn section which drives us to the pure Motown sound and cool arrangements, together with the rest of the very professional band musicians, the result cannot be other than a superb album full of nuances, consistent and rich in beautiful colourful sounds. Undoubtedly "Hot Dish" will delight everyone who listens to it and will give joy and fun to all your next house party guests but, of course, you should have this amazing album in your record player to succeed in full among your friends. Besides, final production deserves another ten points. So, what more can you ask for? ESSENTIAL.

Steve Howell & The Mighty Men “Friend Like Me”. Out Of The Past Music / Blind Rccoon 2015. El guitarrista tejano Steve Howell es bien conocido por su buena y depurada técnica de interpretar el estilo fingerpickin’, junto a una melodiosa y cálida forma de cantar fuertemente enraizada en el blues rural y también en el country-folk. Ahora nos presenta su primer álbum para el que ha decidido rodearse del trío con el que trabaja habitualmente, The Mighty Men, formado por Chris Michaels a la guitarra eléctrica y acústica, Dave Hoffpauir a la batería y Jason Weinheimer al bajo. Todos ellos imprimen el carácter y el beat adecuados en cada uno de los temas que interpretan en el disco, sonando siempre compactos y con el suficiente swing para que Steve se recree con diferentes modos y matices a lo largo de un repertorio adecuado y bien construido sobre las premisas musicales que hemos mencionado anteriormente. Las diez canciones que conforman el álbum pertenecen a algunos de sus héroes, mentores y viejos amigos. Como he dicho el resultado es impecable para ser el disco de debut de un artista maduro que conoce bien su oficio, mezclando con buen criterio el blues y el folk a partes iguales. MUY BUENO. Texas guitar player Steve Howell is well known for his good refined fingerpickin' guitar playing, together with a melodious warm way of singing, deeply rooted in rural blues and country-folk. Now he comes with his debut album where he is surrounded by the trio he usually plays with, The Mighty Men, formed by Chris Michaels on electric and acoustic guitar, Dave Hoffpauir on drums and Jason Weinheimer on bass. All of them give an exclusive character and the appropriate beat to every song included in the album, getting enough swing and a real compact sound to let Steve run free along different musical ways and nuances on a suitable well built repertoire based on the music he likes to play. Ten songs that come from some of his musical heros, mentors and old friends. As I have just said, the result is perfect for a first album coming from a mature artist who knows well his job and cleverly mixes blues and folk in equal parts. GREAT.

JJ Appleton & Jason Ricci “Dirty Memory”. Old Boy Network / Blind Raccoon 2015. Dotado de una más que excelente técnica, gusto y creatividad, Jason Ricci es hoy en día uno de los más poderosos y aguerridos armonicistas del panorama del moderno blues actual. Sus actuaciones no dejan a nadie indiferente por la entrega de la que siempre hace gala. Ahora Ricci ha unido sus fuerzas al cantante y guitarrista JJ Appleton en un proyecto que se aparta de su repertorio habitual y que se convierte en un tributo a la tradición del blues acústico de Piedmont y de toda la franja este de los Estados Unidos incluyendo Virginia, Georgia y las Carolinas, una música que en su día popularizaran desde Sonny Terry y Brownie McGhee hasta Blind Blake, Pink Anderson y el resto de las grandes figuras históricas de la zona. El álbum está interpretado de forma totalmente acústica y en él JJ Appleton muestra toda su contumaz técnica, tanto con la guitarra Resonator como empleando el fingerpickin’, una técnica que domina correctamente y sin fisuras, siendo asimismo un cantante lleno de pasión y mostrando una entrega total. Por su parte Jason Ricci despliega todo su saber, mostrando su amplio abanico de figuras, notas, melodías y escalas a la armónica, además de una interesante voz. Once temas que combinan de forma magistral y muy didáctica el encanto del blues, los field hollers stomps, la old time music, el cajun y la música

americana con raíces. BUENISIMO. Gifted with a more than excellent technique, taste and creativity, Jason Ricci is now one of the most powerful and seasoned harmonica players of actual blues. His shows do not leave anyone indifferent for the extreme delivery and passion he always gives on stage. Now Ricci has joined forces with singer and guitar player JJ Appleton to achieve a project that moves away from his usual repertoire and becomes a tribute to the tradition of acoustic Piedmont and the whole east coast blues, also including Virginia, Georgia and North and South Carolina, a kind of music that became popular thanks to artists like Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Blind Blake, Pink Anderson and the rest of the great historical names of that particular area. A totally acoustic album where JJ Appleton shows all his amazing technique, both with Resonator guitar and playing fingerpickin' style he deeply knows, as well as a passionate devoted singer. On the other hand Jason Ricci displays all his knowledge, showing he is an accomplished harmonica player with a wide range of resources, notes, melodies and scales, but also gifted with an interesting voice. Georgie Bonds “Hit It Hard”. Roadhouse Redemption / Blind Raccoon 2015. La vida de Georgie Bonds nunca ha sido fácil. Después de una juventud llena de problemas que no vienen al caso, Georgie decidió dar un giro a su vida y durante catorce años trabajó como herrero de caballos no siendo hasta la década de los noventa en que empezó a dedicarse en cuerpo y alma a la música, gracias a haber escuchado unas grabaciones de Robert Johnson, cosechando de inmediato cierto éxito a nivel local lo que le animó a seguir por ese camino. Sin embargo en 1994 una serie de problemas relacionados con su salud le apartaron de los escenarios, ya que una reacción a un determinado medicamento le afectó los riñones y los médicos tuvieron también que reemplazarle las dos caderas. Gracias a una fuerte voluntad nuestro hombre publicó su primer disco en el año 2001. Sus penas y desgracias no terminaron aquí ya que una serie de problemas financieros y médicos le llevaron casi a la ruina. En este pasado 2015 Georgie ha recuperado la salud y superado las dificultades, por lo que vuelve nuevamente a la palestra con este su tercer álbum, con el que emerge y se nos muestra como un formidable y versátil vocalista dotado de un excelente potencial y dinámico registro con el que impone su ley a lo largo de todo este exuberante álbum lleno del mejor y más moderno blues a tener muy en cuenta. MUY BUENO. Georgie Bonds’ life has never been easy. His younger days were full of problems. In the late 70’s Georgie decided to give a turn to his life and he worked for fourteen years as a blacksmith shoeing horses. It was not until the nineties where he started in music, after listening Robert Johnson’s recordings, getting immediately some local success which encouraged him to follow on. But in 1994 a series of health problems drove him out of the stages, with an almost fatal reaction to medication with a kidney failure and a double hip replacement. Thanks to his will power he released his first album in year 2001. His misfortunes did not finish, as a series of financial and health problems almost led him to poverty but he managed to overcome all difficulties. Finally In 2015 Georgie has recovered his health and get over problems, so he comes back again with his third album, where he appears as an excellent versatile vocalist gifted with an

enormous potential and a dynamic musical achievement, to prove he is able to give us a more than a very interesting album full of the best actual blues that really deserves to be taken into account. GREAT.

John McKinley “Window On The World”. Self Production / Sarah French 2015. Desde Nuevo Méjico, aunque actualmente residente en Ontario, Canadá, el guitarrista y cantante John McKinley se curtió tocando en innumerables e variopintos garitos de rock y de blues del sur de los Estados Unidos. Ahora ha llegado el momento en el que se ha considerado lo suficientemente maduro para plasmar su obra en este primer cd de su carrera, en el que canaliza todas las influencias recibidas a lo largo de su vida y que no son pocas, desde Freddie King a Johnny Winter, pasando por ZZ Top o Frank Zappa, sin dejar de lado sus raíces mejicanas. Con todo ello John ha sabido absorber y extrapolar estos planteamientos musicales, consiguiendo completar un disco multicolor, dibujado a base de un rock-blues moderno y muy garajero con unos sonidos y unos riffs de guitarra bien arropados en todo momento por el buen hacer de unos músicos que le entienden perfectamente y dan la talla que de ellos se espera. Además de John McKinley a la voz y la guitarra se encuentran también su hijo Darius McKinley al bajo, Ben Rollo a la batería y la colaboración de Darryl Romphf como segundo guitarra. Un álbum curioso y atrevido para paladares acostumbrados al buen chile con carne. MUY BUENO. From New Mexico, although now living in Ontario, Canada, singer and guitar player John McKinley hardened himself as a musician in a countless variety of rock and blues clubs and juke-joints across the south of United States. Now time has come he considers himself mature enough to record his first album, where he drives all the influences he has received along his life, from Freddie King to Johnny Winter, ZZ Top or even Frank Zappa, without forgetting his Mexican roots. John has cleverly managed to absorb and capture all that musical background, to complete a colourful album, build up on the basis of the most actual garage rock-blues with a strong sound and guitar riffs well supported by the good work of a bunch of musicians who have fully understood what is expected of them. Besides John McKinley on vocals and guitar, you will also find his son Darius McKinley on bass, Ben Rollo on drums and the special collaboration of Darryl Romphf as a second guitar. A curious daring album especially devoted to palates used to eat good spicy “chile con carne”. VERY GOOD.

Red House & Friends “Red House & Friends” Paella Records 2015. Sin duda Red House es uno de los grupos con más solera en el panorama del blues español. Fundado a mediados de los años noventa por los guitarristas Jeff Espinoza y Francisco Simón, Red House es una formación de blues, soul y rhythm and blues que sigue el camino de la tradición de la música americana con raíces. Durante años se han recorrido prácticamente toda la geografía nacional además de realizar algunas incursiones por diferentes países europeos. Tres años después de su último álbum publican ahora su séptimo disco que, como su titulo indica, cuenta con la colaboración de inestimables amigos, colegas y grandes profesionales como Lou Marini y Steve Cropper ,ambos músicos fundadores de los legendarios Blues Brothers, Gene Taylor, pianista que ha formado parte de los grupos de James Harman o The Fabulous Thunderbirds entre otros, Mike Vernon, uno de los históricos del

blues británico que recibio el premio KBA de la Blues Foundarion, Antonio Serrano, Marcos Coll, Julián Maeso, Gaby Jogeix, Bobby Alexander, Pablo Sampa y Lluis Coloma. Como puede comprobarse un extraordinario plantel de músicos para un álbum exquisito que contribuyen si cabe a dar mas brillo a un disco ya de por si excelente gracias al trabajo de estos dos grandes músicos. MUY BUENO. Red House is one of the most well known Spanish blues bands. Founded in the middle nineties by guitarists Jeff Espinoza and Francisco Simón, Red House repertoire includes blues, soul and rhythm and blues which follow the path of American roots music tradition. For years they have travelled and played all over Spain but they have also performed in different European countries. Three years after their last album, they now publish their seventh one which, as its title says, has included the valuable collaboration of friends, colleagues and great music professionals like Lou Marini and Steve Cropper, both founders of the legendaries Blues Brothers, Gene Taylor, a pianist who, among others, has been member of James Harman Band or The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Mike Vernon, one of British Blues historical names who was honoured with the KBA Award by The Blues Foundarion, Antonio Serrano, Marcos Coll, Julián Maeso, Gaby Jogeix, Bobby Alexander, Pablo Sampa and Lluis Coloma. As you may immediately realize, here come an extraordinary group of musicians on an exquisite album who contribute to round up an excellent album coming from these two great musicians. GREAT.

Sista Jean & CB “Requiem For A Heavyweight A Tribute To Odetta”. Freckle Bandit 2015. Sista Jean, cuyo verdadero nombre es Jean McClain, se ha curtido musicalmente como parte integrante de las secciones de coros vocales de artistas como Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion o Cher. Cuando no estaba de gira con ellos se dedicaba a cantar los blues junto a CB (Carlyle Barriteau), un guitarrista influenciado por George Benson y que ha acompañado entre otros a Bobby Caldwell, Ben E. King, Ricky Lee Jones, The Miracles o Paul Taylor. Después de una larga gira de tres años, ahora Sista Jean ha vuelto a trabajar con CB en este último proyecto, un tributo a la gran Odetta Holmes considerada la reina del folk-blues americano y acérrima activista en a lucha por los derechos civiles de los negros durante los años sesenta y cuyas influencias pueden encontrarse en la música de Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin o Bob Dylan. De hecho Sista decidió dedicarse a la música después de acudir a un concierto de Odetta. La emotividad de su voz junto a la elegancia de la guitarra de CB y el resto de los músicos que intervienen conforman un disco integro y honesto formado por un repertorio de doce canciones, la mayoría de Leadbelly, junto a una de Alan Lomax, otra de la propia Sista Jean & Carlyle Barriteau y el resto tradicionales. MUY BUENO. Sista Jean, whose real name is Jean McClain, got her musical experience as backing vocal section member of such great artists like Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion or Cher. When she was not on tour with them, she usually sang blues with CB (Carlyle Barriteau), a guitar player deeply influenced by George Benson who backed musicians like Bobby Caldwell, Ben E. King, Ricky Lee Jones, The Miracles or Paul Taylor among others. After a three years long tour, now Sista Jean has started to work again with CB. They have published this last project, a tribute to the great Odetta Holmes, who is considered the queen of American folk blues as well as an outstanding activist during the sixties in the fight for black people civil rights

and whose influences can be found in the music of Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin or Bob Dylan. In fact Sista decided to devote herself to music after seeing Odetta playing live. Her emotional voice together with the elegance of CB guitar and the rest of the musicians involved, complete an honest album of twelve sincere songs, the majority coming from Leadbelly, one more by Alan Lomax, another one a Sista Jean & Carlyle Barriteau own composition and the rest traditional ones. VERY GOOD.

R.B. Stone “Some Call It Freedom (Some Call It The Blues)”. Middle Mountain Music / Rick Lusher 2015. Este último trabajo de R.B. Stone sigue los mismos pasos de sus dos anteriores entregas, esta vez con once nuevas canciones que combinan diversos estilos de blues pero en el que predomina el Mississippi Hill Country y el Delta blues en todas sus formas y variantes, aunque también con algunos pequeños matices e incursiones en el blues de Nueva Orleans o en la música de artistas tan legendarios como JJ Cale, John Lee Hooker o los británicos y psicodélicos Cream. Además de RB Stone que canta, toca la armónica, la cigar box y el resto de las guitarras, se encuentran también como acompañantes Terrance Houston a la batería, Larry Van Loon al Hammond y piano, Josh Fairman y Randy Coleman como bajistas, además de un par de invitados que son los guitarristas Tim “Too Slim” Langford y Austin Young. Un interesante disco, bien definido y resuelto con gusto, gracias al dinamismo y la efectividad de un músico con un buen futuro por delante que seguro que colmará por completo las expectativas de todos cuantos lo escuchen. MUY BUENO. The last R.B. Stone new work follows the same steps of his two previous albums, this time with eleven new songs that combine diverse blues styles but mostly Mississippi Hill Country and Delta blues in all its different forms and variants, but also with some nuances of New Orleans blues as well as drops of such legendary artists as JJ Cale, John Lee Hooker or psychedelic British band Cream. Besides RB Stone who sings, plays harmonica, cigar box and all other guitars, you will also find Terrance Houston on drums, Larry Van Loon on Hammond and piano, Josh Fairman and Randy Coleman on bass, plus a couple of guests musicians, guitar players Tim "Too Slim" Langford and Austin Young. This is an interesting, well defined and tasteful recording, thanks to the dynamism and effectiveness of a musician with a good future ahead who will surely fulfil the expectations of all those people who listen to it. Connie Lush Band “Renaissance”. Self Production 2015. Después de veinte años sin parar de trabajar y de realizar giras por más de treinta países, Connie Lush decidió que era el momento de hacer un alto en el camino y evaluar lo que había hecho hasta el momento para dar un nuevo giro introspectivo a su carrera y ver con claridad como enfocar su futuro musical. Junto a su marido el bajista Terry Harris incorporaron un par de nuevos músicos a la banda y durante el verano del 2014 empezaron a componer nuevos temas con los que empezar su nueva andadura partiendo prácticamente de cero. El resultado es el álbum que aquí comentamos que contiene nueve canciones originales, más una versión de “I Can’t Make You Love Me” de Bonnie Raitt. Además de Connie a la voz, la banda está compuesta por Terry Harris al bajo, Roy Martin a la batería y percusión y Steve Wright a la guitarra. El disco nos ofrece unas canciones en la tradición de la música ‘americana’ con raíces, con diversos

arreglos que van desde lo muy ligeramente pop, hasta la música rock, con algunas influencias cercanas al rhythm and blues. Un álbum nada desdeñable con una mas que notable producción y sonido, donde Connie revela toda la pasión que es capaz de expresar a través de unas atractivas cualidades vocales llenas de naturalidad a la vez que intensidad. MUY BUENO. After twenty years of a non stop working touring over more then thirty countries, Connie Lush decided it was time to take a break to evaluate what she had been doing so far to give a new introspective change to her career and clearly focus her musical future. Together with her husband, bass player Terry Harris, they added a couple of new musicians to the band and, during the summer of 2014, they worked writing songs to start with their new career. The result is this last album which presents nine original songs plus a version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" coming from Bonnie Raitt. Besides Connie on vocals, the rest of the band members are Terry Harris on bass, Roy Martin on drums and percussion and Steve Wright on guitar. A bunch of compositions that follow the tradition of Americana music with roots, with different arrangements that go from the very slightly pop to rock music, plus some close influences of rhythm and blues. An interesting recording with more than a remarkable production and sound, where Connie pours out all the passion she is able to express through her attractive vocal qualities full of an intense but, at the same time, very natural feeling. VERY GOOD.

King Louie & LaRhonda Steele “Rock Me Baby”. Self Production 2015. Louis “King Louie” Pain y LaRhonda Steele son dos músicos muy populares en la costa noroeste de los Estados Unidos. Llevan tocando juntos un montón de años y han realizado innumerables actuaciones. Sin embargo no ha sido hasta el pasado año 2015 en el que ambos decidieron que había llegado el momento de encerrarse en un estudio de grabación para editar una parte importante del trabajo que llevan realizando juntos desde hace ya tiempo. Este es un álbum meditado y reposado en el que ambos nos presentan un repertorio basado principalmente en el blues, el jazz, el soul y el groove mas contemporáneo y atractivo, interpretado todo con frescura y espontaneidad, gracias al talento innato de Louie, quien no en vano está considerado como uno de los mejores exponentes del Hammond B-3 y a la versátil y sugestiva voz de LaRhonda, quien se curtió como cantante de gospel y que recientemente ha superado un cáncer lo que le ha dado alas para volver a los escenarios con una fuerza más indomable y poderosa que nunca. Los músicos que han intervenido están todos magníficos, desde el saxo tenor de Renato Caranto hasta los guitarristas Dave Lula y Doug Lewis. Todos ellos contribuyen a redondear un disco ya de por si muy interesante. MUY BUENO. Louis “King Louie" Pain and LaRhonda Steele are two very popular musicians along USA northwest coast. For many years they have been playing together on countless shows. But it has not been until the past 2015 when both musicians decided time had come to lock themselves in a recording studio to do an album that gathered part of the music they have been performing together during the last years. This is a mature calm album, where both musicians bring us a repertoire mainly based in the most contemporary attractive blues, jazz, soul and groove, performed with a cool spontaneity, thanks to the innate talent of Louie who, not in vain, is now considered as one of the best Hammond B-3 players, and the versatile suggestive voice of LaRhonda, who got a wide experience as gospel singer

and has recently survived from a cancer, which has made her to come back with a remarkable power and joyful energy. The rest of participant musicians do a superb work, from tenor sax Renato Caranto to guitar players Dave Lula and Doug Lewis. All they contribute to round up a very interesting recording. GREAT.

Sin duda Johnny Rawls es uno de los supervivientes de aquellos años en el que el soul estaba en todo su esplendor y formaba parte de la música preferida de los jóvenes tanto blancos como de color, es decir, aquellos años dorados de la Tamla y la Stax. Nominado en diversas ocasiones a diferentes premios y ganador en el 2012 de los Blues Music Awards como ‘Mejor Artista de Soul’, Johnny Rawls nos demuestra en este álbum que sigue gozando de una salud vocal envidiable, dando una vez más lo mejor de si mismo, en unas composiciones francamente suculentas para todos aquellos aficionados a un estilo bien definido y del que actualmente Rawls sigue siendo uno de sus máximos representantes, si no el mejor si por lo menos un candidato a la corona como rey del envolvente y melodioso soul de Memphis. Blues In The Box “Solo Y Maljuntado”. Self Production 2015. Es curioso que un músico o una banda con residencia en España, en este caso en Barcelona, rescate una canción de trabajo tal y como las interpretaban los ‘field hollers’ en el sur de los USA durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX. Sin embargo nos encontramos con la sorpresa de que Leo Cayuela, impulsor de este proyecto, que además toca guitarra ‘cigar box’ y ‘cigar box dobro’, ambas de fabricación propia, se atreva a abrir su disco con “Back To Brown” de Furry Lewis, tema que pertenece al estilo citado anteriormente. Hay que destacar también el tradicional “John The Revelator”, que fue grabada por primera vez por el grupo de gospel Bessemer Sunset Four en 1928, donde Leo está apoyado por la dulce voz de Annie Baggs. Cayuela ha querido recrear aquellos años en los que Alan Lomax, Paul Oliver o Samuel Charters viajaban por los parajes del sur a la búsqueda de desconocidos bluesmen a los que grabar, entrevistar o ambas cosas a la vez. Tal como dice el propio Cayuela, “hubo un tiempo en que la guitarra se tocaba con una moneda en lugar de púa o se usaba una navaja en lugar de slide y en los que una caja de puros con cuerdas bastaba para tocar los blues desde lo más profundo del alma y del corazón”. Este disco es un homenaje a la genuina música negra de aquellos tiempos. MUY BUENO. It is noticeable that a musician or a band living in Spain, in this case in Barcelona, rescue a work song like it was performed by those field hollers in the south of the USA during nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, we are greatly surprised when we see Leo Cayuela, ‘alma mater’ of this project, who also plays self made cigar box guitar and cigar box dobro, dares to open this album with "Back To Brown" by Furry Lewis, a song belonging to the just mentioned style. It is also remarkable his version of the traditional "John The Revelator", which was recorded for the first time by gospel group Bessemer Sunset Four in 1928, where Leo is supported by the sweet voice of Annie Baggs. Cayuela’s aim is to bring us those years in which Alan Lomax, Paul Oliver or Samuel Charters travelled around the countryside of southern USA states looking for unknown bluesmen to record and interview. As Cayuela says, "there was a time where guitar was played with a coin instead a pick or a knife was used instead a slide and a cigar box and some strings were enough

to play soulful heartbreaking real blues". This album becomes a tribute to the genuine black music of those unforgettable times. VERY GOOD.

Jason Vivone & The Billy Bats “The Avenue”. Self Production / Blind Raccoon 2016. Desde Kansas City nos llega el nuevo trabajo de Jason Vivone & The Billy Bats titulado “The Avenue”. En los años noventa Jason se trasladó a Kansas City, quedando sorprendido por lo baratas que eran aquellas grandes y señoriales casas de estilo victoriano que se encontraban en la Avenida Independence. Fue tal el impacto que Jason decidió comprar una con cien años de antigüedad y pronto supo el motivo por el que eran tan económicas. Allí vivían todos los jefes de la mafia y por las noches la avenida se convertía en un lugar sin ley donde pululaban los más raros y peligrosos personajes. Incluso alguna prostituta fue asesinada en aquella avenida. Este álbum es un homenaje y un buen reflejo de todo aquel ambiente y de las gentes que se movían por la terrible Independence Avenue, donde Jason nos muestra que, además de un buen ‘story teller’, es asimismo un buen cantante y un excelente intérprete de la guitarra slide. Vivone está respaldado por Matt Bustamante a la batería, Paula Crawford a la guitarra, Rick MacIvor a los teclados, Jeremy Clark al bajo Ben Hoppes al banjo y Joanna Berkevile a la percusión. Un buen disco, curioso y original que merece ser escuchado con atención. MUY BUENO. From Kansas City comes the new work of Jason Vivone & The Billy Bats entitled "The Avenue". In the nineties Jason moved to Kansas City where he was astonished when he saw how cheaper were those big stately Victorian houses at Independence Avenue. Jason decided to buy at steal a one hundred years old one there. Soon he realized why they were so cheap. Old mafia families lived there and at night the Avenue became a place with no law with strange dangerous people walking around and even a prostitute was killed there. This album is a tribute to that people who were living there he knew at that incredible Independence Avenue, where Jason shows us that, besides a good story teller, he is also a good singer and an excellent slide guitar performer. The rest of the musicians involved are Matt Bustamante on drums, Paula Crawford on guitar, Rick MacIvor on keyboards, Jeremy Clark on bass, Ben Hoppes on banjo and Joanna Berkevile on percussion. This is a good, curious very original album which deserves your attention. VERY GOOD.

Benny Turner “When She’s Gone”. Nola Blue / Blind Raccoon 2016. Benny Turner continua el legado de su hermano, el gran e inigualable Freddie King, llevando el blues por todos los rincones del planeta. Ambos aprendieron de su madre Ella Mae (King) Turner todo lo que se podía saber acerca del blues. Al igual que hiciera en su momento junto a su hermano, con este nuevo álbum Benny Turner quiere también rendir homenaje a su muy querida madre en el aniversario de su fallecimiento, incluyendo seis canciones extraídas de su primer disco y cuatro standards del blues, donde Turner se muestra como un poderoso cantante de gospel, soul, blues y rhythm and blues además de un bajista sólido y competente. De hecho Benny se curtió en la banda de su hermano Freddie y, a la muerte de éste con sólo 42 años, estuvo sumido en una terrible depresión durante mas de dos años, puesto que Freddie fue para él no solamente un hermano sino también un amigo y casi un padre. Fue gracias al cantante y guitarrista de blues de Chicago Mighty Joe Young que volvió nuevamente a los escenarios y se convirtió en el líder de la banda de

Marva Wright. Este disco es una verdadera maravilla tanto en interpretación como en arreglos y producción, donde Benny Turner y todos los músicos suenan soberbios. BUENISIMO. Benny Turner follows his brother’s (the unforgettable and exceptional Freddie King) legacy, carrying the blues all over the world. Both learned all blues secrets from his mother Ella Mae (King) Turner. As he also did with his brother, Benny Turner’s new album is a tribute to their dearest mother in her death anniversary, and includes six tracks from his first recording and four blues standards, where Turner shows himself as a powerful gospel, soul, blues and rhythm and blues singer, besides an energetic able bass player. In fact Benny hardened himself in his brother’s band and, when Freddie passed away only aged 42, he suffered a terrible depression for about two years, because Freddie was for him, not only his elder brother but also a friend and even a father. Thanks to Chicago blues singer and guitar player Mighty Joe Young, he came back on stage and soon he led Marva Wright’s band. This is a marvellous recording, both in performing as well as arrangements and final production, where Benny Turner and all the musicians involved sound really superb. GREAT.

Mitchell T. Palmer & The Hash Brown Band “She’s Lookin’ Good”. TopCat 2015. Grabado en 1997, TopCat Records ha publicado en fechas recientes el segundo álbum de uno de los grupos más veteranos de la escena del blues tejano. El disco incluye catorce poco conocidos ‘covers’ basados en el blues y el rhythm and blues de los años cincuenta, con composiciones que van desde Rufus Thomas hasta Lonesome Sundown, Harold Burrage o Magic Sam. El repertorio incluye también dos canciones originales, configurando un repertorio desenfadado y fácil de digerir, para satisfacer de esta forma a un amplio y variado espectro de audiencias y sensibilidades. Toda la banda se muestra compacta y bien engrasada, destacando la labor versátil de su guitarrista Brian “Hash Brown” Calway, un músico que se ha hecho un nombre gracias sus colaboraciones con artistas de la talla de Zuzu Bollin, Big Al Dupree, Sam Myers, Bobby Rush, Mike Morgan, Duke Robillard, Holland K. Smith o U.P. Wilson, pero también el resto de los músicos se muestran en plena forma, desde el fantástico y deslumbrante cantante Mitchell T. Recorded in 1997, TopCat Records has recently published the second album of one of the most veteran groups of Texas blues scene. The album includes fourteen not very well known covers based on fifties blues and rhythm and blues, with compositions ranging from Rufus Thomas to Lonesome Sundown, Harold Burrage or Magic Sam. King Edward “50 Years Of Blues”. Hit The Road 2015. Sin duda King Edward es uno de los músicos mas solicitados en sesiones de grabación y como acompañante de diversas figuras en el mundo del blues. Según sus propias palabras para él es imposible recordar la cantidad de grabaciones y artistas con los que ha colaborado a lo largo de su carrera tanto en Louisiana como en Chicago y Mississippi que es donde actualmente reside. Después de quince años sin publicar un disco, ahora vuelve nuevamente con un álbum grabado bajo su propio nombre y que tal como su titulo indica es un resumen de sus cincuenta años de carrera. Son un total de once blues en el mas puro estilo tejano donde se dejan ver sus influencias de guitarristas como Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland y en especial de Albert King. La guitarra y la voz de Edward se ve respaldada por Oteil Burbridge al bajo, Doug Lancio como segundo guitarrista y Marco Giovino batería y percusión. Un fantástico disco de blues genuino, intenso y gratificante que colmará las expectativas de los aficionados al blues ortodoxo con arreglos contemporáneos. MUY BUENO. Undoubtedly King Edward is one of the most demanded musicians in recording sessions or requested to back a wide range of blues renowned names. According to his own words it is impossible for him to remember the amount of recordings and artists he has worked with, not only in Louisiana but also in Mississippi and Chicago where he currently lives. After fifteen years without publishing an album, now he comes back again with a new work recorded under his own name. As the title suggests it is a summary of his fifty years of career. Kelly Richey “Shakedown Soul”. Sweet Lucy / Frank Roszak 2016. Después de treinta y cinco años de carrera Kelly Richey se ha superado a si misma con éste nuevo trabajo, que es su dieciseisavo álbum editado hasta el momento. Esta vocalista, compositora y excelente guitarrista nos presenta diez canciones cuyo denominador común y nexo de unión entre todas ellas son sus poderosos y energéticos solos de guitarra, junto a la mezcla de blues, funk, rock, americana y música electrónica, de la cual hace una arma poderosísima para fagocitar el aburrimiento de cualquier individuo que tenga un mínimo de sangre en las venas. Kelly canta también con gran autoridad y aplomo en todos los temas, mostrando que, con el paso de los años, su voz ha alcanzado unas cotas de madurez difíciles de superar, ya que ha conseguido llegar a un gran nivel, gracias a una voz curtida en los mil y un tugurios por donde ha paseado su música, su profesionalidad, su energía y, en definitiva, su buen hacer. Además de Kelly a la voz y la guitarra están también Rikk Manning al bajo y Tobe Donohoe a la batería, más diversos invitados en algunos temas. El ultimo y mas reciente álbum del cantante y guitarrista Keith Stone nos transporta a un increíble viaje musical tanto por New Orleans como por el sur de la Louisiana para poder de este modo apreciar con todos los sentidos su rica herencia y el enorme legado y tradición musical. Además de la innegable calidad interpretativa de Keith Stone, el disco cuenta también con un puñado de grandes invitados entre los que destacan Dr. John, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Joe Krown, Andy J. The Jumpin’ Bones “Marrow”. Self Production 2015. Desde Atenas, Grecia nos llega el nuevo disco de The Jumpin’ Bones, una de las formaciones más reconocidas por aquellas tierras en los últimos dos años. A pesar de ser una banda de reciente formación ya que empezaron a tocar en la primavera del 2014, tres de sus miembros, Orestis Tsikouris (voz y armónica), Dimitris Dakopoulos (guitarra) y Konstantinos Aloupis (bajo) comparten amistad y aficiones musicales desde la infancia. Juntos formaron su primera banda y empezaron a tocar en diferentes clubs de la capital griega. Finalmente han añadido al batería Spiros Gavalas al grupo, lo que ha dado mayor consistencia, fuerza y determinación a los Jumpin’ Bones, permitiéndoles alcanzar una proyección mucho mas amplia a nivel nacional. En septiembre del 2015 decidieron finalmente entrar en un estudio de grabación para plasmar este disco que incluye siete creaciones propias que se adentran en el rhythm and blues más primigenio con toques de garaje, rock y rockabilly. El disco ha recibido excelentes reseñas y comentarios y los ha consolidado como una de las bandas con más proyección en la escena del blues heleno. MUY BUENO. From Athens, Greece comes the new album of The Jumpin' Bones, one of the most recognized groups in the last two years in Greece. Although they are a new band, as they started to play in spring 2014, three of the musicians Orestis Tsikouris (vocals and harmonica), Dimitris Dakopoulos (guitar) and Konstantinos Aloupis (bass) are friends and share musical tastes since childhood. They formed his first band and started to play in different clubs of the Greek capital. Afterwards they added a new member to the group, drummer Gavalas Spiros, who has given much more solidity, strength and determination to The Jumpin' Bones, enabling them to reach a wider impact at national level. In September 2015 they finally decided to go to a recording studio and the result is this album that includes seven own songs which go deep into early rhythm and blues with some touches of garage, rock and rockabilly. The cd has received excellent reviews, which has consolidated them as one of the Greek blues bands with a bright future ahead. VERY GOOD.

Steven Troch “Nice ‘N’ Greasy”. Sing My Tittle 2016. Steven Troch quedó enganchado con los blues a la temprana edad de diez años. Con el paso de los años se ha convertido en un original y competente armonicista influenciado sobre todo por los nombres históricos y clásicos como James Cotton, George Smith y sobre todo Little Walter. Para este primer disco Troch ha viajado desde su país Bélgica a los Estados Unidos para grabar en los estudios del conocido guitarrista Kid Andersen, quien le ha ayudado a reclutar un excelente plantel de músicos de blues de primera fila como son Rusty Zinn a la guitarra, Bob Welsh al piano, guitarra y bajo, el propio Kid Andersen también a la guitarra, bajo y contrabajo y finalmente June Core a la batería. El álbum es un compendio de fantásticos blues en la más pura línea y tradición tanto de Chicago como de la costa oeste. Son un total de doce temas que recogen las influencias antes mencionadas pero sin olvidar la esencia del calypso, el rockabilly, los más genuinos shuffles e incluso algún que otro ritmo más reggae. En todos estas canciones, escritas y compuestas por Steven Troch, se puede percibir el espíritu de Willie Dixon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Reed

o George “Harmónica” Smith. BUENISIMO. Steven Troch was caught with the blues when he was only ten years old. As the years have gone passing by he has gradually become an original able harmonica player deeply influenced by the historical classic names like James Cotton, George Smith and especially Little Walter. For this first album Troch has travelled from his country Belgium to United States to record at the studios of well known guitar player Kid Andersen, who helped him to recruit an excellent group of first class blues musicians like Rusty Zinn on guitar, Bob Welsh on piano, guitar and bass, Kid Andersen himself on guitar, bass and upright bass and finally June Core on drums. Marc Ferrer Trio “3 Coffees”. Marccato Edicions 2015. Marc Ferrer es un excelente pianista dotado de un increíble talento interpretativo cuyo estilo abarca, entre otros, el rhythm and blues, el blues, el boogie, el jazz y el swing, que afloran de manera espontánea en la música de este hombre. Ahora nos presenta su primer proyecto en solitario donde nos descubre todo su conocimiento del género con trece canciones preciosas donde aborda con pericia y muy buen resultado los estilos antes mencionados. Composiciones en su mayoría del propio Marc se suceden con nítidos dibujos, riffs y fraseos dentro de un marco cálido y compacto. Ferrer y sus compañeros combinan un gran sentido del ritmo y del tempo, con un swing y una conjunción admirables en todas y cada una de las canciones que interpretan. Los músicos que intervienen demuestran su buen hacer y su destreza profesional, ya sea Agustí Burriel a la voz en un par de temas junto a la de Laia Porta, o Big Dani Pérez al saxo tenor en “Night Train” y “Barcelona In Blues”. La sección de ritmo corre a cargo de Pep Rius al contrabajo y Olivier Rocque a la batería, ambos dan el contrapunto ideal para que Marc brille con luz propia y a gran altura al piano. En definitiva, nos encontramos ante un disco lleno de enorme expresividad y mucha personalidad que ningún aficionado al jazz debería dejar pasar por alto. MUY BUENO. Marc Ferrer is an excellent piano player gifted with an amazing performing talent, whose style covers, among others, rhythm and blues, blues, boogie, jazz and swing which spontaneously come out in his music. Now he brings us his first solo project where we will immediately discover all his musical knowledge, along thirteen beautiful songs where he cleverly approaches the above mentioned styles, always with an excellent result. Most songs are Mark’s own compositions and come with beautiful cool drawings, riffs and clear phrasing surrounded in a warm compact frame. Ferrer and his musicians combine a great sense of rhythm and tempo with an astonishing swing in each one of the album songs. All musicians involved show their musical skills on a very professional well teamed work, either Agustí Burriel vocals on a couple of songs together with Laia Porta, or Big Dani Perez on tenor sax in "Night Train" and "Barcelona In Blues". The rhythm section

includes Pep Rius on double bass and Olivier Rocque on drums. Both give the perfect background to make Marc’s piano shine at a very high level. In short words, we are facing al album with a terrific expressiveness and tons of personality that every jazz lover should take into account. GREAT.
