Superintendent Mr. L. Sebastian . .Mrs. k. Mayer, FBLa advisor ~ 27 students from Hettinger High School will be traveling to Fargo, nD March 29-31, 2015 to participate and compete at this year’s nD FBLA Spring Leadership Conference (SLC). FBLA recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. At the State Leadership Conference, members will compete in events testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners are then eligible to compete for national awards at the national Leadership Conference in Chicago this summer. In addition, students will have completed their specified level of their Business Achievement Award. The Business Achievement Awards (BAA) are an aggressive, self-directed, results-based business and leadership program designed to compliment academics while accelerating a student’s leadership skills. The awards focus on the words surrounding the FBLA Crest: Service, education, and Progress. Best of luck to all students attending the 2015 SLC!

SmARTER BALAncE TESTInG: Students in grades 5-6 will start the Smarter Balance north Dakota State Assessments on wednesday, March 25 and March 26. The students in grades 3-4 will start wednesday April 8 and April 9. Make-ups will be the day after the test that week. we are going to test the weeks of April 14, April 21, and April 28 starting on Tuesday and going through Thursday each week. Make-ups will be Fridays of those weeks. It is really important that students are here for testing unless they are really sick so we don’t have to deal with many make-ups.

PRE-SchOOL REGISTRATIOn: Mrs. Skogen will hold pre-school registration for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year on Friday, April 17, from 10:00-2:00 p.m. in the pre-school room. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and current immunization records at the time you register them. mATh mEET AT nEW EnGLAnD: Mrs. Spratta is coaching the 4-6 graders and Mr. wanner is coaching the 7-8 graders for The Math Meet. The Math Meet will be held in new england on Friday, April 24.

nO SchOOL: we do not have school on good Friday, April 3. we also will not have school on Monday, April 6, for easter Monday.

OPEn SWIm DATES:we will have Open Swims on Tuesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 23. everyone is welcome to attend and the entrance fee is $3.00. Students must be able to stand on the bottom of the pool in the three foot area or they need to have an adult in the pool with them. Open Swim will start at 3:30 and to until 5:00 p.m. Students may come down right after school and get changed for Open Swim.

chAnGInG PROGRAm: The Changing Program will be held on Tuesday, April 28, and Thursday, April 30, from 1:00-2:30 for the fifth and sixth graders. The students are split by grade level and gender. The great nurses from west river Health Services put this program on for our students each year and we truly appreciate their efforts to do this for our students. PAREnT mEETInG FOR chAnGInG PROGRAm: On Tuesday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m. Patty ness will hold a parent meeting in the AV room to share information with parents regarding the Changing Program for 5th and 6th grade students the next week.

GOOD BuGS-BAD BuGS: Judy Larson will be here on Thursday, April 2, in the AV room to do a program for students in grades K-6 on “good bugs & bad bugs” in our environment. Students will learn about the life cycles of these bugs, what they do to help us, and what they can do to harm us or crops.

nO chILD LEFT BEhInD STILL GOInG STROnG:Many people thought that no Child Left Behind was being replaced by Common Core and Smarter Balance. That is not the case, they are simply new additions to no Child Left Behind. what that means is even though we have a new curriculum, new tests, and new cut scores we are still expected to have 100% of our students at grade level proficiency. As a school district we do fairly well, however, we are not at 100% for each grade level so we and most school districts in north Dakota will be on School Improvement where we have to meet certain criteria in order to receive any state or federal funding.

wash cloth is, the shape, and texture. The conversation continues when drying off with the color of the towel and getting the child’s body dry. when it’s time for pajamas one parent may simply put them on the child. Another parent will talk about the color of the pajamas, the design on the pajamas, the texture of the pajamas and how we put them on our right leg, our left leg, our right arm, and our left arm. Then the language use continues with a story before bedtime, looking at the pictures, and talking about them and the story. The interesting thing about the study is that words that come from mom and dad are more important and make a larger impact than words that come from television, computers, Ipads, or games. So simply setting a child in front of a television set does not do the same as the dialogue example from above. So words, words, words, are very powerful and can make a huge impact on your child’s ability to learn language which helps with reading and writing later on in school. So parents take the time and initiative to have conversations with your pre-school children, they are busy learning language skills so give them all the help you can.

Mr. r. Jones, Band ~ March was the beginning of many opportunities for the band program at Hettinger. The first group to take advantage of an opportunity was the 6th grade band. On March 10, the students participated at the Big Muddy Band Festival in Mandan. This was their first experience on a stage with adjudicators in the audience. The students rose to the occasion and brought home four trophies that day. The group’s performance earned them a silver trophy, along with trophies for outstanding trombone section, outstanding percussion section, and outstanding saxophone section. This group set the bar for the rest of the semester! Six days later, the high school band compet-ed at regional competition and followed suit with what the 6th grade band started. with eleven members, the high school band competed in different small group categories this year. There were ten different solos/ensembles that competed for Hettinger year. Of those, three ensembles and three soloists received a star rating, sending them to state music in May. Michael Shirek, elli Kaitfors, and Beth Holzkamm are the soloists who received the star rating, while a woodwind ensemble and saxophone quartet are also going to state. The ensemble involving ten out of the eleven students performed “nearer, my god, to Thee” and received a star rating, along with an outstanding performance award! The bands have come in like a lion and have no intention of going out any other way. This is just the beginning of what the program is capable of!

Music auditions, concert and summer tour

Over the past months there has been changes taking place within the north Dakota University System that affects admission requirements into a north Dakota College or University. This past week the final requirements have been released. “. . . the admission guidelines for north Dakota State University and the University of north Dakota will become progressively more rigorous for students applying for fall 2016 and beyond. In addition to increasing the gPA and ACT guidelines, high school core requirements will also change. Over the past few months, nDSU and UnD have examined best practices on which additional course(s) should qualify as core, including a review of core high school

requirements from the ten research institutions in a six-state regional area (Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Iowa, nebraska, and wyoming). Of those who require 15 or more core courses, every institution requires either 2 or more units of foreign language and/or at least 1 additional unit of math or science. In addition, an analysis of students seeking admission to nDSU and UnD for fall 2014 entry term demonstrated that the vast majority had already completed 4 units of math, science, or social science. Finally, these changes also maintain alignment with north Dakota graduation requirements. Based on our study of best practices, the following are the changes for additional core coursework for nDSU and UnD: · For students seeking admission for fall

2016—no changes to core requirements. · For students seeking admission for fall

2017 = 14 creditsIn addition to the original 13 core courses, 1

unit of additional coursework chosen from any existing category (english, math, science, social science) or world language (including foreign languages, native American languages, or American Sign Language). · For students seeking admission for fall

2018 = 15 creditsIn addition to the original 13 core courses, 2 units of additional coursework chosen from any existing category (english, math, science, social science) or world language (including foreign languages, native American languages, or American Sign Language). It is important to note that both nDSU and UnD have holistic review processes in place in which students may still be admitted if they do not meet our new admission guidelines, so we encourage these students to apply for admission and each application will be reviewed. we value the work that you are doing in the high schools to prepare students for higher education.”
