NJSLA - STATE TESTING REQUIREMENTS
The class of 2022 have 3 pathways to meet their state testing requirement:
1. Take and pass the NJSLA ELA 10 exam and the Algebra 1 exam
1. Take and pass an alternate exam for both ELA and Math:
Any other NJSLA exam, SAT, PSAT, ACT, Accuplacer, ASVAB
1. Portfolio Assessment - done in the winter of senior year

Yr COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS
-Minimum 2 consecutive years of a World Language
-4 yrs of Math
-Chemistry
-Minimum of 16-18 academic or college units

**Should take at least 4 academic units senior year**
GPA/CLASS RANK
-Toms River Schools use a weighted GPA to calculate class rank.
-Extra points (weight) are given for higher level courses to match the higher rigor
of those courses. An extra ½ point is given for a plus (+) grade
Example: An A+ in college prep English = 4.5 pts
An A+ in honors English = 5.5 pts
An A+ in AP English = 6.0 pts

GPA/CLASS RANK
-Students receive their class ranks and GPA’s 4 times during their high school
career:
Fall of Junior Year
Winter of Junior Year (After MP 2)

-Ranks are run at the end of 3rd MP in Senior Year to determine the Valedictorian,
Salutatorian, and The Top 20 for Graduation
-Final rank/GPA are sent to Colleges after completion of 4th MP

-IF A STUDENT PLANS ON APPLYING TO A 4 YEAR COLLEGE, THEY NEED
TO HAVE AN ACADEMIC SENIOR YEAR SCHEDULE.
-At least 4 academic classes. The more competitive schools a student is
considering, the more academic their schedule needs to be
-”But I want an early dismissal”
-How are you going to stand out from other applicants?
EARLY COLLEGE AT HS NORTH (DUAL ENROLLMENT)
-Students earn college credit while taking their HS North courses
-Program began 2 years ago, but is in process of expanding. More courses will be
dual enrollment eligible in the future.
-Courses currently available: AP English Lang, AP English Lit, Pre-Calc Honors,
Intro to Computer Prog Honors & CP, Intro to Digital Design Honors, Adv Digital
Design, Web Pg Honors, Multimedia Honors

Transfer, Attendance and Grading.
EARLY COLLEGE AT OCC (Jump Start)
-Students take classes at OCC for discounted tuition at OCC.
-Gen Ed courses: psych, sociology, public speaking, etc
-Courses that easily transfer to other colleges
-Even with an early dismissal, students should not sign up for a class before 2 PM

SENDING TEST SCORES TO COLLEGES
-IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to send scores to colleges
-This is done through the test’s website
-It can take 2-3 weeks for scores to reach a college after the student requests
it online
-HS North DOES NOT get test scores, we CANNOT send them out

- Private vs Public Schools- How much and what types of Financial Aid are you getting

-Early in Senior Year, finalize your list-Around 5 schools: your dream school, a safe school, about 3 schools you have a very good chance of being accepted to
TYPES OF APPLICATIONS COLLEGES USE
1. Regular Admission-set due date for all applications, decisions made after due date
2. Rolling Admissions-set due date, but as applicants apply, their apps are
seen and decision is made
3. Early Decision-usually earlier deadline, decision made early, BINDING
4. Early Action-similar to Early Decision, but not binding

-Allows student to fill out one application that can be submitted to multiple colleges
-Sometimes a school will require a supplemental form along with the common app
-Student must invite counselor and teachers to provide school info/recommendations (DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO THIS)
-Mrs. Riordan has developed a slide show on using the Common app. It will be posted on the Guidance website and in the Class of 2022 google classroom along with this presentation

What are the positives of starting at a 2 year college?-Financial
-most students can attend a 2 yr college without accumulating
debt
-Student is unsure of major
-Student does not feel ready for 4 yr college
-Transferring to a 4 yr college has become easier than in the past
2 YEAR COLLEGES
-Kean at Ocean-Student can get a bachelor's degree without leaving Toms
River-major financial savings
-Charge Back Program-Attend Brookdale CC because they have a major not offered
at OCC, but pay same rate
2 YEAR COLLEGES
-NJ Stars Program
-Student in Top 15% of their class after Junior year or after Senior
Year - free tuition for 2 years at OCC
-NJ Stars 2-Student earns associate degree and has GPA of 3.25 or
higher-Transfers to 4 yr NJ College - can receive up to
$1,250/semester
VOCATIONAL SCHOOL
-Students who begin vocational school in their senior year, can return to vocational school to finish their program
-post secondary scholarship often available
-Post secondary programs offered for students to start after they graduate from high school
COLLEGE ATHLETICS
-Must complete 16 core classes under the NCAA Clearinghouse
-Must meet minimum GPA/Test score requirements
-Must file with the NCAA Clearinghouse for Division 1 and Division 2
sports. Transcript will be uploaded to NCAA by Guidance Office at the
beginning of Senior year if student is registered and a then a final
transcript will be sent at the end of Senior year.
FINANCIAL AID
-District Financial Aid Evening - Date TBD
-usually held in late September/early October
-Financial Aid Officer from a New Jersey college provides information on
FAFSA and answers individual questions
-OCC O.P.E.N. Workshops
-OCC holds individual workshops for families to help with FAFSA, students do
not have to be attending OCC
