To return to school or not? Following the announcement last week, there has been so much talk about whether children should return to school and the timings around this. If there is to be any increase in the number of children attending Mayhill, clearly we need a careful and measured plan that is built around the highest hygiene and safety standards we can achieve. As everyone’s family has experienced this lockdown in a different way, some parents will be very keen to follow government guidance and return their child to school, whereas others will prefer to not send them in for some time and see this as a huge leap in terms of risk. I want to reassure you that you will have the school’s full support in whatever decision you make and we will work alongside each of you to help map out the right return for you and your child. Hopefully all parents will now have received today’s letter which ask you for your views should your child be eligible to return on 1 st June. They ask for your thoughts and response by Monday morning. Thank you. Odiham Foodbank Last Monday 4th May, the new Odiham Foodbank started full operation. MAYHILL JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWSLETTER | ISSUE NO 15| 15TH MAY 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

A rather busy week!

To return to school or not?

Following the announcement last week, there has been so much talk about whether children should

return to school and the timings around this. If there is to be any increase in the number of children

attending Mayhill, clearly we need a careful and measured plan that is built around the highest

hygiene and safety standards we can achieve.

As everyone’s family has experienced this lockdown in a different way, some parents will be very

keen to follow government guidance and return their child to school, whereas others will prefer to

not send them in for some time and see this as a huge leap in terms of risk. I want to reassure you

that you will have the school’s full support in whatever decision you make and we will work

alongside each of you to help map out the right return for you and your child.

Hopefully all parents will now have received today’s letter which ask you for your views should your

child be eligible to return on 1st June. They ask for your thoughts and response by Monday morning.

Thank you.

Odiham Foodbank

Last Monday 4th May, the new Odiham Foodbank started full operation. Initiated by All Saints Church Odiham, in partnership with Hart Foodbank, it provides emergency food and support for anybody and everybody who might be in crisis, across our community.

The Foodbank is open on Mondays and Thursdays, 1.30-3pm, and is based just behind Lloyds Pharmacy in Odiham High Street (at the Church Office, Ostlers Place, Deer Park View, Odiham RG29 1JY). If you would like to donate (see list below) to the foodbank, donations can be made at a new donation point in the Coop or at the Church Office on Monday’s and Thursdays between 1:30pm and 3pm. Beatbox Adventures with Shlomo

The Times Record-breaking

beatboxer SK Shlomo is launching a

huge project to help kids and raise

money for NHS Charities Together.

Homeskool Beatbox Adventures is a

weekly livestreamed interactive show

empowering kids and their families to

find their true voices and create their

own music. For 30 minutes every

Thursday, families around the world

will learn new vocal skills from SK Shlomo, the critically acclaimed world-champion beatboxer who

has previously collaborated with Bjork, Ed Sheeran and Lily Allen, played at Glastonbury and broken

world records with his jaw-dropping vocal gymnastics. Inspired by the success of his critically

acclaimed tour show, Shlomo’s Beatbox Adventures For Kids, he wants to teach families in

quarantine how to become Superstar Beatboxers and has set up a JustGiving campaign to try to

raise £2500 for NHS Charities Together in the process.

Pupils of the Week

What a week, with so many different outcomes from the children’s work. We have certainly been impressed with the ingenuity seen with audios, videos, stop animations, superb written outcomes

and amazing Maths. Well done to all of the children and to all you parents and carers too with your fantastic, ongoing support with their learning.

It has also been a pleasure to see photos of the activities children have been doing at home; from cooking to exercise challenges, building projects to new lawn laying – we continue to be delighted

by how resourceful and determined the children are.

The teachers have certainly found it tricky this week to decide on the pupils of the week and we would like to especially like to celebrate the following children’s achievements with you.

Year 3 Thomas G for his hard work in completing curriculum activities.

Harriet M for her French speaking videos and recordings. Alice H for her independent, positive attitude to home learning and for creating an incredible

presentation about light. Joey E for his critical thinking and thoughtful answers, when discussing ‘The Lighthouse’ animation

in this week’s English task.

Year 4 Gracie T for her super perseverance towards all of her home learning.

Orlando D for his wonderful drama as he travelled through the digestive system. Toby L both for his commitment to all home learning and for his awesome cooking skills – especially

in making pasta from scratch! Iso K for her creative, informative and entertaining animation of a journey through the digestive

system; in addition to her resilience with her Maths home learning.

Year 5 Angelos D for consistently working hard to complete his home learning with regularity - Well done. Evie L for facing home learning challenges with resilience and posting some great work on - we are

proud of you! Mia J for entering into the spirit of our virtual Greek day and describing her fabulous Greek Goddess

costume in detail using our literacy objectives. James S for entering into the spirit of our virtual Greek day, showing brilliant ingenuity with a

fabulous, invisible Hades’ costume.

Year 6 Billie A for a fabulous piece of English which was full of suspense and demonstrated excellent use of

speech to move the story along. Josh H for an outstanding piece of writing, full of personality. It was tense and full of humour all at

the same time. Freddie B for going the extra mile and entering a comic writing competition on top of his English

work. In addition for thinking of others in the class by suggesting this to them too. Emma M for some beautifully written and presented descriptive writing about Skellig.

National Thank A Teacher Day

May 20th is National Thank A Teacher Day. It will mark a moment when we, as a nation, can come

together to say thank you to teachers across the country who are making a difference not only now

during these unprecedented times, but every day of the year. The Teaching Awards Trust are asking

as many people as possible to share their message of thanks, ideally in a video clip leading up to the

day. This will be in an expression of their choosing - singing a song/miming to a song of thanks to

their teacher, writing and/or reciting a poem, or sharing a picture of a drawing.
