• Solution – Time banking– exchange time rather than goods/money with neighbours– stimulate ‘barter economy’– increase social interaction and support networks– Increase trust/ community cohesion– Increase confidence/ skills/ employability
Timebanking: Delivery
• Staff– CFED Project Manager– New project co-ordinator
• Infrastructure– Face2Face location– Web/ DigiTV/Mobile site
• National Partners– Timebanking UK– DigiTV, Kirklees Council
• Governance– Project Board– Working Group
• Evaluation– Contract/ Independent– Local FE college/ Uni?
Timebanking: Benefits to Residents
Beneficiary/ Stakeholder
Qualitative Quantitative
Park Wood Residents - Improve access to a wider range of informal services than budgets allow

- Remove barriers to volunteering and returning to work e.g. through the provision of childcare or transport
- Expanded support and social networks
- Improve quality of life - Increase people’s
opportunities and life chances
- Pathway to work - Skills/ Education;
lessons and tutoring can be swapped via time banks; these may vary from basic literacy and numeracy to other skills such as piano playing or ICT skills
- Informal training could act as a pathway into accredited training
Timebanking: Benefits to KCC/ MBC
Beneficiary/ Stakeholder
Qualitative Quantitative
KCC - Increase community cohesion: building trust between neighbours
- Contribute towards national indicators: NI 1, NI 2, NI 3, NI 6 and NI 142

through reducing worklessness
- Develop the economic prosperity of Kent
- Increase the capacity of local communities so that people are empowered to participate in local decision making and delivery of services

Community Media: National Problem
• Strong links between deprivation and digital exclusion• Socially disadvantaged least likely to use social media
Community Media: Local Problem
• Issues – Ethnographic Research/ Workshop– stigma around Park Wood - in community and surrounding communities– negative image reinforced through media – some residents lack a sense of connection with place– reduced community optimism/ residents’ self-esteem – reduce trust and community cohesion– reduced incentives for people to improve their local area
• Solution – Community Media Project– education/ skills programme to help community create new media– emphasise the positives about community life in new media– disseminate content and display the information locally through local
screens … where residents go …– alongside public service messages generate by KCC partners and other
content like Kent TV from which many residents are excluded
