Registration information is the last 2 pages of this issues. Please make the hotel reservation as soon as possible. You can cancel up until the last minute. The hotel is two stories (with elevators) and they will try to have as many members on the first floor near the hospitality room as they can. Free high speed internet is included with the room price. I will hopefully have hospitality room details in the April issue. Troy is 20 minutes north of Detroit just off of I-75. The hotel has two fine restaurants (they have to be better than last year’s in St. Louis). Preliminary discussions include a tour to see a couple of local collections. As usual most of the time will be reserved for room-to-room trading. For anyone new who might be thinking of attending their first conven- tion, it will be the most openers and corkscrews you will ever see in one place (outside of Art Santen’s Opener Mu- seum). ———–———-–—-—-—Members Update——————–-—–—--——– Unfortunately three more JFO members have gone to opener/corkscrew heaven. Lehr Roe passed away on October 8th,

John Hall in August and Chuck King from cancer on November 12th.

Lehr was a long time JFO member and corkscrew collector. Along with Herb Danziger he hosted the 1989 JFO Con-

vention in Frankenmuth, Mi. He along with his wife Joan attended many JFO Conventions. Lehr was well known in

corkscrew circles and a passionate collector of Haff patent corkscrews. He was 75 and survived by his wife, Joan.

John Hall was another member who attended many conventions with his wife, Anna. John really loved one style of

opener, an A-12 sword. He collected any and all regardless of the advertising on it. John was 86 and is survived by his

wife, Anna.

Chuck was also a long time member of JFO and several national beer clubs. His main love was any breweriana from

Albany, Ny. and the surrounding area. Chuck was also very easy going and usually had great merchandise to sell at

shows. Chuck was just 49 and is survived by his wife, Karen and daughter, Amanda.

Cora Whelan, wife of deceased JFO member Don, has been battling breast cancer since the end of October. The tumor

was removed but she is at high risk for the cancer to return so she is undergoing chemo treatments. Cora has been to

two JFO conventions since Don’s passing and is always the life of any gathering. Our thoughts and prayers go out to

her and the families of Lehr, John and Chuck.

A-9-14 Wayne: One of the tougher A-9s to find, ―Wayne Beer Plaza 0800

Detroit‖. I obtained this one through Ed Kaye’s baseball player collection. A

couple of examples have sold on eBay. Who knows maybe if you come to

Troy another one will turn up and you can add this rare opener to your collec-

tion. The only other Wayne Brewing from Detroit beer advertising opener is

the Post-Pro A-20-39 Wayne Products & Brewing.

Spouse’s Corner By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse

Happy 2009! How can it possibly be a new year? Hope it finds everyone reading this in good health, good spirits and

with a good opener just found.

It’s hard to believe that the last time I wrote, we were about to go to San Francisco, seems so long ago. But we haven’t

forgotten all the good memories of seeing friends, eating lots of seafood and of course, riding the cable cars!! They

were having an unseasonably warm week that was great for us, especially for our annual bike ride over the Golden Gate.

We didn’t think Pete and Angela Norwicki could have a funnier story to tell us in 2008 as the one we heard the year be-

fore, but they certainly did. It’s always fun to spend an evening with such a happy and entertaining couple. Our trip

wouldn’t be complete without a visit with Jack Ford!! If he ever retires, there will be a lot of disappointed students who

are attached to this teacher, mentor and friend. Wish I had thought of the names he has given, Jazzy and

Snazzy….Razzle and Dazzle!! Maybe we need two more because those would be such cute names. I’m sure Jack is

glad that John Cartwright comes up for a visit with us too, as John’s wife always sends some goodies from their garden

for Jack.

The plan was that after San Francisco, the kitchen remodeling would get into full swing and so it did!! Had to pack up

the entire kitchen, as everything was replaced plus one wall was extended so we could have a wall oven. The kitchen

table, small electric cooler and microwave took up what little room we have in the living room. The old refrigerator was

in the garage. For a couple of nights we couldn’t walk on the new floor, so you had to go out the front door, and come

into the garage to get things out of the refrigerator. The coffee pot was in my office, but the cream and sugar was in the

living room. Then you had to wash the cup in our bathroom as the second bath was being renovated too!

I’m a detail person and thought I had done pretty well organizing and coordinating this project until I got a call from

John one day at work. He wanted to know if the oven that was to be installed was suppose to have a steam option. It

had been picked out months before, but I knew it did, now that he mentioned it. Well, it’s a good thing the plumber was

there, because it works best with water available and I hadn’t put that on the task list for Norm the Plumber (not Joe the

Plumber).

Oh my, I just saw John with a drill. Makes me very nervous, but I will try to continue on as my corner is due!! Why

does it make me nervous? Well, it’s like this. What they say about red heads not having any patience is unfortunately

true. Add to that mix the fact that men don’t read directions and it’s a pretty explosive situation. You soon start hearing

those words people say when things go wrong. Then you get blamed for buying something so impossible to install!!

Haven’t been able to convince him that I don’t buy things with the sole intent of putting him over the edge, that I was

not a design engineer for the manufacturer causing his blood pressure to elevate and that approaching things calmly usu-

ally helps things to go smoother. He’s smart enough to do things around the house, it’s just that red hair!! Thankfully

he is patient with the ―girls‖, including me at times, compiling newsletters and making opener trades!

Overall everything turned out very well. We feel like we were very fortunate. We knew the man who built the cabinets,

and he recommended the tile and granite man and the crew that stains the cabinets, so I just had to find an electrician

and call our plumber and all the tradesmen were in place and worked great together.

My wish was for it to be done by Christmas and it was basically done at 1:30 December 24th, except for a few things like

the under counter lights that had not come in.

The dogs did really well, even though their entire sleep schedule was disturbed by workmen in the house. It was nerve

racking to leave them in our new kitchen when we had to return to work after the holidays as long after puppy chew-

ing, they suddenly chewed a piece of furniture when some other workmen were here in the spring. So we leave about a

dozen nyla bones with them each morning. When John comes home, Snazzy carries each one back to the living room,

one by one. It must be a sight to see her as she is so proud when she has a bone or toy in her mouth and parades by just

Spouse’s Corner (continued)

prancing with her tail held high.

John was suppose to take over cooking in the new kitchen. I do give him credit for being the first to use the new oven,

making some excellent corn bread, but that’s about the extent of it. Haven’t tried my famous banana pudding that I

made for JFO 1989 and 1990 yet. But I did take my banana pudding pan to the appliance showroom when I was picking

out things to make sure that precious pan fits.

Well, I need to walk the dogs as John is working on the newsletter today, between checking out football scores. Since it

is the 2nd week of January and not cold, I can manage that.

Now it is time to start preparing for a trip to Troy, Michigan where we hope to see lots of JFO friends. John would like

to see some rare openers too!! So stay well, get your vehicles ready for the trip as time does go quickly now and we are

looking forward to this year. John hopes nothing else happens and he will be feeling much better than last year.

Footnote – bring lots of money, John needs to pay for this kitchen somehow!!

Corkscrews, Cabernet & Colonial Williamsburg

From several countries in Europe, Brazil, Canada and the U.S., 33 members of the In-

ternational Correspondence of Corkscrew Addicts (ICCA) gathered in Williamsburg on

Oct. 1 – 5 to for their annual meeting. Founded in 1974 by notable corkscrew collectors

as Brother Timothy of the Christian Bros. Winery in California and Dr. Bernard Wat-

ney, grandson of the founder of Guinness Brewery in England, this group meets annu-

ally somewhere in the world. Recent meetings have been held in Sydney, Australia, Alaska/Inside Passage Cruise and

last year in Vienna/ Budapest. Membership in the ICCA is limited to 50 members worldwide and new membership is

based on recommendations by 3 current members.

The 2008 program started on Oct. 1 with a Tour/Tasting and dinner at the Williamsburg Winery (Virginia’s largest win-

ery) where the members tasted 12 different Virginia wines, welcomed 3 new members and used the antique and new

corkscrews to open the wines. The corkscrew group toured the Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown and the Yorktown

Victory Center on Thursday Oct. 2 which was a memorable experience for all the members. Christiana Campbell’s Tav-

ern was the scene for a colonial style dinner with several Virginia wines.

On Friday, Oct. 3, the members visited Colonial Williamsburg with a trip down Duke of Gloucester St, (a stop at

Chowning’s Tavern with its famous corkscrew logo sign) (pic 1), the Governor’s Palace, and lunch on at the King’s

Arms Tavern. In the Governor’s Palace, a very rare early 18th Century English double hinge folding pocket corkscrew

was noted in the dinning room. Completing the day was a presentation on the third president of the U.S.-Thomas Jeffer-

son- by Colonial Williamsburg’s re-enactor William Barker. He spoke as Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the U.S. on

current issues in the early 1800’s and then discussed his wine and travel experiences in France from 1784-89. The ques-

tion and answer period was truly enjoyed by all members. Following the presentation, Paul Luchsinger, meeting host

presented Thomas Jefferson/Bill Barker with a ―Thomas Jefferson Tribute corkscrew‖, a limited edition corkscrew (35

corkscrews) (pic 2) created for this year’s meeting. This special mold corkscrew in darkened brass closely replicates

what Thomas Jefferson would have used in the late 1700’s during his stay in France and his residence in the White

House. Original research on the corkscrew design was completed by ICCA member Dr. Bert Giulian who published a

book---―Corkscrews of the 18th Century‖. Following the Jefferson speech and ―tribute corkscrew‖ presentation was a

Jefferson Vineyards wine tasting by Chad Zakaib, general manager of Jefferson Vineyards. Five wines were tasted

ranging from a Jefferson Pinot Grigio to a special release Jefferson 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon wine. It was a splendid

day of Jefferson history and wine.

Saturday Oct 4, was the day for serious corkscrew buying, selling at auction and a members’ exhibit of rare and unusual

corkscrews. Over $30,000 of corkscrews were traded or sold during the session.

Member exhibits included the first corkscrew ever patented by the U.S. government in 1860—the Philos Blake patent

and valued at over $10,000; less than 10 are known to exist. Paul Luchsinger (left in pic 3) admires the 2 P.Blake patent

corkscrews (pic 4) displayed by John Morris (right in pic 3) of Chattanooga, TN. Another member exhibited early 19th

century English design patent corkscrews such as C. Hull’s 1864 single lever Royal Club corkscrew, rack and pinion

design corkscrews and early double lever corkscrews.

A special and unique display by a Pennsylvania member was a rarely seen display of Knife-Pistols with a corkscrew

trigger. The 6 different knife pistols in the exhibit (pic 5), each with a corkscrew trigger were designed both for use as a

conventional weapon and also as a burglar alarm device (the latter use would be to set up as an alarm device with the

―corkscrew trigger‖ screwed into a door jam and the knife pistol would be loaded with a blank charge). Upon opening

the door, the pistol would fire and alert the owner of an intruder. And yes, the corkscrew trigger could be used to pull a

cork too.

International Correspondence of Corkscrew Addicts (I C C A) Annual Meeting Williamsburg VA, October 1-5, 2008 by Paul Luchsinger

The Saturday evening banquet for the ICCA members and wives included a final salute to Virginia wineries with 5

wines from 4 wineries. A sixth wine, served with the dessert course offered special memories to 5 members present at

the banquet. The ICCA members met in 1984 in the Bordeaux Region of France and visited one of Thomas Jefferson’s

favorite wineries that still exists today –Chateau d’Yquem. Host Paul Luchsinger, later in the 1990’s, purchased a bottle

of the 1984 vintage and stored it in his wine cellar for a special occasion. In 2008, the occasion happened and the 1984

Chateau d’Yquem bottle was opened with the special ―Thomas Jefferson Tribute‖ corkscrew. The 5 members from the

1984 meeting assisted Paul Luchsinger in opening the bottle. The assessment of the wine by all members—―simply deli-

cious!‖. The members agreed that Thomas Jefferson (3rd President) would have agreed too.

The ICCA members departed from Williamsburg on Sunday Oct 5,

with many memories of Corkscrews, Cabernet, Colonial Williams-

burg and a tribute corkscrew likely to have been used by Thomas

Jefferson. The next ICCA event is an online corkscrew auction end-

ing Nov. 16, 2008. The first auction in May 2008 drew 300 cork-

screw collectors with 200 corkscrews selling for a total exceeding

$100,000. The November Auction can be viewed at

www.auction.icca-corkscrew.com

Eifel Multitool

Joe Young got this piece on eBay. There is an obvious opener, screw driver, wrench of some kind and something else at the opposite end. (Weird) The stamping is interesting:

Eifel Multitool Made in USA

Price 15¢ Pat. Appld For Chicago, ILL

American Plierench Co.

The company also made other interesting wrenches. The pat-entee was Joseph Eifel (from Chicago) -- no relation to the Eifel of tower fame that I know of :-) Have you seen anything like it? It's not a beer, but it's sure different.

PAGE 14 JUST FOR OPENERS JAN 2009 ISSUE #121

It seems like I have been complaining for a long time that

eBay had been slowing down and very few really good

items were being offered for sale each quarter. I ate my

words this quarter as the eBay results are the most I have

ever recorded. There was quantity and quality. A couple

of collections (Bob McNary’s and Eric Bittner’s) were on

the market along with some smaller or partial collections

highlighted by Bill McKienzie’s Colorado openers offered

by his wife, Elvie. Maybe the economy is forcing people

to sell and who knows how long it will last but lets enjoy

eBay having lots of nice openers for sale.

Leading off the ―A‖ types was a mint A-1-79 Tahoe (from

Carson City, NV) bringing $179.49. It was offered by Jim

Pfaff who was selling a small collection of mostly nice

West Coast beer openers. Any pre-pro beer opener from

Nevada is desirable and this A-1 proved that point. Out of

the McKienzie collection was a mint A-4-61 Tivloi, the

first I have seen offered for sale and it sold for $136.49.

The top selling A-4 was a UL Blatz from Seward, Ne. and

it brought $152.59. Remember as a rule quality always

brings good results and the above three were great openers.

There were numerous good ―A‖s sold this past quarter and

anyone interested in collecting bottle openers should have

bought something as there were a lot of bargains also.

―B‖s were led off with another great opener from the Bill

McKienzie Collection, a B-5-10 Columbine, which brought

$169.49. A serious Colorado collector ended up with many

of the good openers Elvie sold on eBay. Rumor has it that

this B-5-10 was once owned by Norm Jay who traded it to

Bill for a $40.00 opener (many years ago). You never

know for sure how things will turn out. One that went out

of sight was a B-13-63 Glennons. It was sold with a C-13-

50 Glennons but the C-13 has been sold a few times for

decent money but this lot bringing $352.00 was a real eye

opener and I assumed the two top bidders were chasing the

B-13. On the somewhat moderate side I was surprised the

a B-18-UL Otoe Brewing from Nebraska City, Ne. only

brought $79.66. A really small brewery and I have not

seen any kind of advertising from this brewery before. I

assume Nebraska openers are not as ―hot‖ as they were at

previous times. The Bill McKienzie parade continued with

a nice B-29-2 Budweiser bringing $169.49. Another result

to note was a nice B-32 Coca-Cola Pacific Bottling Works

bringing $233.99. Who said there is a recession going on?

The fun continued in the ―C‖ category with a C-1-3

Schoenhofen in excellent condition bringing $216.49. The

rarity in this one, its black paint on brass. I have never

seen a brass version. Have any of the members seen one or

have one in their collections? Cigar Box Openers had sev-

eral nice examples sold but overall prices were on the low

side. This may be a category that many collectors chase

after but like most anything there are a lot of great varia-

tions. Cast iron or ―D‖ types were led by who else but an-

other Bill McKienzie UL, a D-8 C A Lammers Bottling

Co, Denver. It brought $136.49 and like most of Bill’s

other Colorado openers was in great condition. Another

McKienzie opener, an E-17-2 Mile High brought $170.49,

and led the ―E‖ category. Are you seeing a trend with

Bill’s openers. This was just his Colorado collection but a

good many rare and hard to find openers were in it and

most were in outstanding condition. As I pointed out to a

couple of JFO members, it will be a cold day in H___ when

you see three E-23s for sale the same week on Bay and that

is exactly what happened this past quarter. Of course it

was another McKienzie opener leading the way at $56.00,

an E-23-2 Capitol. Finally in the ―E‖s I thought I might get

lucky and get a New Discovery ―E‖ when I bought the E-

UL-UL Mount Carbon (sorry Ben for beating you out), but

Larry Moter gave me a lecture that he has had one for years

and I just told him it was an E-2. It is a cross between and

E-1 and E-2 and yes I will give Larry credit for ―finding

it‖ (see pictures).

A couple of Coca-Cola openers headed the ―F‖ class. A F-

6 Coca-Cola & Orange Crush bringing $108.00 and a new

style kitchen tool with a triangular spatula selling for

$161.28. Figural bottle openers saw a few nice examples

sell and one interesting one was a Dale Deckert ―repro‖ of

the All American (#38) and it sold for $61.41. Dale found

out reproducing them was not that hard but getting a nice

paint job was the tough part. ―G‖s saw one interesting re-

sult, a G-21-1 K I K Malt bringing $104.49. The G-21

Northampton turns up fairly often but the other G-21s are

all hard to come by. I bought what looked like an H-2 Fink

Brewing for $13.00 but it is really a new Discovery as it

has a milk bottle opener added (see pictures). Jumping to

the ―K‖s, they were highlighted by a repainted K-2-9 Lone

Star bringing $169.49. The K-2-9 is probably the most

desirable K-2 to own as far as rarity and demand are con-

cerned.

―L-2‖s, what can I say, enough A-B ones have sold this

year for every JFO member to receive one (actually it

would take 2 years). In any event it is astounding how

many of these Williamson Mfg. Co. made. For ―M‖ types

a nice M-2-20 Bola sold for $138.99. Not bad considering

how hard it is to find M-1s and M-2s in real nice condition

―Opener and eBay Trivia‖

PAGE 15 JUST FOR OPENERS JAN 2009 ISSUE #121

especially ones with bottles. We finally get to ―the M-3‖, a

M-3-42 Seitz in super condition was bought by Art John-

son ―to complete his beer M-3 collection‖! The price

speaks for itself, second one known (first had no paint),

great condition and the only orange colored beer advertis-

ing slider known. Congratulations Art and for those won-

dering, one of his sons has claimed the collection when Art

passes on to ―M-3 Heaven‖. Three M-73s all brought in

the $200.00 price range, a Missoula, a Becker/Budweiser

and a Hotel Gowman Seattle and all in nice condition. I

will end the ―M‖s with a Bill McKienzie Colorado opener,

the very desirable M-6-2 Hamm’s sold for $202.51. The

second one sold on eBay and like a lot of Bill’s openers

very hard to find.

―N‖ types like other categories saw lots of good examples

sold but nothing eye catching though I am sure Mike ―The

Truck Driver‖ Krejci was happy to get the N-43-UL Schlitz

& Fort Pitt for $116.49. The knife was one of the many

nice openers and corkscrews (many unlisted) from the col-

lection of Eric Bittner. The ―O‖s or wall mounts were

highlighted by an O-5 Beaufont Ginger Ale, first being

bought for $30.00 on a Buy-It-Now and then resold for

$200.00. The third example I have tracked on eBay and all

three have sold in the $200.00 price range. One other ―O‖

notable was a O-8 Coca-Cola Bottling Co from Peoria, Il.

bringing $224.72. Good Coca-Cola openers are still

strong. Many good Starr openers sold and prices seemed to

have leveled off and definitely much lower than the 2000

year boom times.

Many Anheuser-Busch knives sold this past quarter. I will

comment first that the 1952 P-25-3 version with the plastic

looking handles sold several times with a couple being sold

in the $400.00 range. A lot of these were recently found,

beware! Probably about a $100.00 knife with so many of-

fered in the market place. A P-26-UL Anheuser-Busch

―Flag‖ knife was the top seller at $1,720.00. As the news-

letter is being sent out in January, a P-71-1 Budweiser in

fair condition that sold for $1,313.00 and the buyer did not

pay up, so it is being offered again on eBay. A P-71-2

Budweiser knife in good condition sold for $455.00 five

years ago. This P-71-1 has a missing Stanhope, missing

blades and the corkscrew has half of it broken off. A filler

piece and amazing to think it went for the price it did the

first time. Bob Sudduth bought a very interesting political

P-26 knife having the Chicago political name of Christ Jen-

sen (1920s). The knife had a stanhope and was in great

shape which led to the selling price being $698.00. Once

again many nice beer corkscrews or ―P‖s sold.

―R‖ or 3-D figural types saw some activity with the notable

item being a R-6-2 Kaier selling on a Buy-It-Now for

$600.00. It was in average condition. Something you do

not see sold very often were a pair of S-2-1 Pabst special

opening cans with the original carton. They sold for

$229.27 and certainly a very unusual style for a bottle

opener. General corkscrews were somewhat active as the

ICCA Corkscrew Auctions seem to be taking over for

eBay’s auctions. Very good activity for corkscrews but the

highlight which I pulled from the ICCA Auction results

was a 1882 Pitt Patent bringing $9,000.00. A rare bird for

U. S. patent collectors. Finally in honor of the trucker, a

Hard Rock café opener eBay result is shown for the first

time, and in fact it was a lot of 61 different which sold for

$662.00. Who says new stuff is ―Crap‖?

Next stop on the show schedule is Blue-Gray in February

in Fredericksburg, Va. It will be interesting to see if people

are buying and just how much good stuff will be offered

for sale. A report will follow in the April JFO. In either

event get your stuff ready, Troy, Mi. is just around the cor-

ner. Lots of great openers and corkscrews for sale and

trade. One bright part to the ―recession‖, gas is cheap! Be

there!

Speaking of great openers and corkscrews at the JFO Con-

vention, last year in St. Louis I had two boxes of openers

sitting on the coffee table every day of the convention.

Among the many ―miscellaneous‖ items were three M-28-1

Coors folding can openers in leather pouches. Twenty

years ago it was considered a ―tough‖ type but now many

examples have turned up. So no one bought any of the

three which were included in a pile bought on eBay.

The month after the convention, I get a visit from Dave

Pinney and his girlfriend and he is going through the two

boxes and picks one of the M-28-1s to buy. He had a small

pile of openers and nothing too expensive. I knew I had

one non-beer M-28 so I opened the leather pouch and about

passed out when this one has a corkscrew swiveling around

with the opener. M-28s with a corkscrew are much tougher

to find than without and I had never seen a beer one until

now. It was a ―New Discovery‖ as I told Dave that I had

meant to set that one aside after St. Louis. Sorry Dave but

I had never checked them when I got them and could not

believe a Coors ad one had a corkscrew. I gave him one of

the other two for $5.00 (Norm likes it when I say ―I gave‖

someone an opener). I have been collecting 30 years and

still do not take the time to check things carefully.
