Thursday, November 2, 1PM

Monica Randall, author of Phantoms of the Hudson Valley, will present this lecture about the great Catskill hotels and luxury resorts of the last century, and the haunting ruins that remain today. These elegant palaces, perched atop cliffs overlooking the Hudson River, were built in the early 1900s for wealthy New Yorkers looking to escape city life.

Growing up in the Fifties Thursday, November 9, 1PM

Martin H. Levinson grew up in Brooklyn following World War II. He will revisit his middle-class childhood and discuss significant cultural events of that era, such as the advent of television, rock & roll, desegregation and more. Part memoir, part social history, his book is a portrait of an iconic mid-twentieth century American community.

With the exception of story times, siblings outside of the program age limits will not be permitted in the program. -If you have any questions, the Library staff is happy to assist you!

Juvenile Library Cards are available to children under the age of 17 who are able to write their first name. A parent or guardian must sign the library registration form in the presence of Library staff.

Calling from Carowak! Local Author Story Time Event Sunday, October 8, 2PM

Dennis Kantor, English teacher at Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, will be coming to share his newly published children’s book, Calling from Carowak.

Hear Mr. Kantor read aloud and join Miss Toni for an alien craft! Ages 7-10. No registration required.

Doggone Safe! With Linda Keehn & Gracie Thursday, November 30, 5:30PM Certified dog trainer and dog bite safety educator Linda Keehn comes to the library to promote “Doggone Safe” - a dog bite prevention initiative. Children will learn how to understand canine body language and practice greeting and petting pups with licensed therapy dog, Gracie. Registration required.

Babysitting 101: Babysitting Certification Series

For teens Grades 7-12 who wish to prepare for babysitting and child care jobs. This series will

help you become responsible and reliable. A Completion Certificate will be awarded

Libby Skala Presents Lilia!

Lilia Skala was an actress and architect when she escaped Austria and came to America in 1939. She

worked in a zipper factory, learned English, and began acting again, earning an Oscar nomination

for Lilies of the Field, and appearing in the Broadway shows Three Penny Opera and Diary of Anne Frank, and in movies such as Ship of Fools, Charly, and Flashdance. Her granddaughter Libby Skala is an award-winning playwright and actor.

Libby’s celebration of her grandmother’s extraordinary life promises to be an afternoon of

exquisite theater.

has performed with the American Philharmonic Orchestra and was Orchestra Director at Farmingdale for 25 years. Terry taught at the Juilliard School and has been Lawrence High School Orchestra Director for 18
