Promising jute bag market in Europe

Dhaka: Bangladesh could earn Tk 1 hundred crore annually by exporting jute bags as the

demands of the bas has been increasing in the global market.According to an estimate of

International Jute Study Group (IJSG), the demand of the shopping bags is 500 million pieces in

a year in the market.Leading food retailers Tesco, the Co-operative Group, Sainsbury's,

Morrisons and John Lewis-Waitrose partnership are expanding grocery convenience formats. In

the UK alone, the grocery market was worth 150.8 billion for the calendar year 2010, an

increase of 3.1 percent over the previous year.By 2014, IGD, a research organization working on

the development of food and grocery industry, predicts that the Chinese grocery market will be

worth ?761billion, compared to a forecast US market value of ?745billion

Companies like The Body Shop are also moving towards a "greener" packaging revolution.

Demand for natural, biodegradable bags will gradually increase as more and more chain shops

around the world phase out the use of polythene bags and use bio-friendly natural fibre bags

instead.Jute goods manufactures of Bangladesh export around 100,000 shopping bags a month

on an average to different countries. They mentioned that there is scope for export of more

jute bags in the years ahead, as some European countries are set to ban polythene bags.As per

Indian NIIR Project Consultancy Services India had exported about 40 million jute bags mainly to

Europe in 2008-09 and the number is likely to cross 75 million by 2011-12.This also appeared in

the Business Standard, an online Indian newspaper, that India exported 40 million bags at the

end of March 2009, especially to the European countries. This number is expected to rise to

more than 75 million in the next 3 years. It also reported, President of Association of Jute and

Handicrafts Entrepreneurs of Eastern India Sushil Khetan said that India's export of jute bags in

2008-09 is estimated at Rs 200 crore while it was Rs 120 crore in the previous year. - UNB

Jute sector in jeopardyWrong policy imperils millers * ME crisis

creates export nightmare Zahid Hossain BiplobKHULNA: For a lack of proper policy on utilizing the potential of the once-famous industry,

many private-sector jute mills in the country have become losing concerns like the government-

owned ones run by Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).Quite a good number of private-sector jute mills were established in different areas of the

country over the last few years. However, as many as 12 private-sector jute mills were shut

down in the meantime while another dozen are on the verge of closure, sources said.

The setback in the jute sector has created frustration among the mill owners. They say this

situation reveals an uncertain future of the industries that grew up circling the golden fiber.

Sources in the Private Jute Mill Owners Association said the demand for jute products fell

drastically on the international market amid unrest in the importing countries.

Bangladesh exports jute products mainly to Tunisia, Lebanon, Serbia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran.

But, the export demand plummeted amid a prolonged crisis across the Middle East.

Besides, the governments move to reopen the closed mills without any viability assessment

and a cut in subsidy has put the private-sector jute mills in further disarray, said one source.

Industry-insiders said the grand alliance government initially increased the subsidy in jute

sector from 7 to 10 percent. But, at the fag end of its tenure, the government made a cut intothe subsidy, putting the sector in a tight corner.

and Nissan jute mill in Narayanganj, Alhaj Aminuddin Jute Mills and Charmuguria Jute Mill in

Madaripur and Fatema Jute Mills in Savar have already been shut down.Meanwhile, Usha Jute Mills in Comilla and B.S. Jute Mills in Faridpur along with 10

country are now on the brink of closure, officials concerned said.

Besides, the attitude of the owners of big mills is reportedly non-cooperative towards those of

the medium to small jute mills. Many alleged that the big mill owners pushed to government

for subsidy cutbacks to maintain a monopoly on the sector.

Mahmud Hossain, managing director of Janata Jute Mill in Ghorasal, said the private-sector jute

mills have been taking the hit of subsidy cuts and mills are facing closure one after another.

Proper planning, ample subsidy and initiatives are urgently needed to save the jute sector, he

    added.

Many private jute goods exporters said the state-run BJMC has failed to explore new

international markets as it does not have the expertise to promote products globally.

They said BJMC should appoint efficient people with proven expertise in product promotion.

When contacted, BJMC Marketing Director Abu Sayeed said jute export declined in the currentfiscal due to the Eurozone crisis and unrest in the Middle East.

Sources also pointed out that India is not importing jute and jute goods following the

depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar. - See more at:http://www.daily-

Jute mills get in miseriesExports fall, losses go up A

CorrespondentJute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) are incurring heavy losses for

lack of policy support amid sluggish export demand on the international market and

devaluation of the Indian currency, industry sources said.

For the first time in the last 29 years, the state-owned jute mills posted a net profit of Tk 195

million in 2010-11 fiscal, ushering in good days for restoring the golden era of Bangladeshi jute

    products.

But BJMC reported net loss of Tk 3.20 billion in the subsequent 2012-13 fiscal due to a

depressed international market with exports to another major market, India, facing a major

drawback due to depreciation of the rupee against the dollar, the industry-insiders said.

There are a total of 18 jute mills under the state-run Jute Mills Corporation.According to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, the country earned around $592 million in

the first seven months of the current 2013-14 fiscal from jute exports, down from $646 million

in the corresponding period last fiscal.

Officials concerned fear that the export earnings will decline by more than 30 percent this

    fiscal.

Abu sayeed, director (marketing) of the state-owned BJMC, told daily sun that recession in the

European Union (EU) nations and a political crisis across the Middle East have pushed down

    jute exports.

The neighbouring India also is not purchasing jute bags due to depreciation of rupee against

    dollar, Abu Sayeed said.

Industry insiders said India used to import around 60 percent of Bangladeshs total raw jute

productionwhich dropped significantly over the last few months.

They said India imported only 40,000 bales of raw jute in the first seven months of the currentfiscal compared to 800,000 bales in 2012-13 FY.

Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries have also cut their jute imports

due to political turmoil and economic sanctions.

China, Vietnam and the European countries have also reduced their jute imports from

Bangladesh, according to industry insiders.Syed Asaduzzaman, managing director of Zaman Jute Mills, said: Demand of jute and jute

goods dropped significantly on the international market while the major importer India has cut

its imports in the current fiscal.

Sometimes the importers are offering prices below the production costs, he added.

Many jute exporters blamed the absence of modern machinery and lack of research and

developmentactivities on jute goods for the crisis.

Some private-sector jute exporters said BJMC failed to explore international markets as it has

no proper research initiatives to promote jute exports and expand the market.

Industry insiders said lack of foresight while reopening the closed mills without proper pre-

evaluation has lead to another drawback which pushed up the expenditure instead of creating

    profit-potential.

They also said the government is yet to execute the Jute Packaging Act by making jute bags

compulsory for rice packaging to give a push to the ailing jute sector.Jute exporters have urged the government to take steps to increase the use of jute products by

executing immediately the Jute Packaging Act and to explore new export markets for jute goods

to save both the jute millers and growers.

India introduced mandatory use of jute in 1987.

the coming season as growers show more enthusiasm to cultivate the golden fiber this year.A

total of 840 seed traders have applied for permission to import Indian jute seed named JRO-524

variety (Tosha) which called as Nabeen seed in that country, Moksudur Rahman, deputy

director (Quarantine) of plant protection department, told BSS.He said the seeds would be

imported under private sector initiatives while the government will play the supervisory role.

The national seed committee headed by agriculture secretary will examine the applications

Bangladeshi scientists decode genome of jute fungus

    Staff Correspondent

Bangladeshi scientists have discovered the genetic history of a fungus which causes at least 30

percent loss of Tosha variety of jute, the golden fibre of Bangladesh.

The fungus is Macrophomina phaseolina which is responsible for 500 diseases across the globe.

This is the second innovation of the Bangladeshi scientists who invented the genome sequence

    of jute two years ago.

A team of Bangladeshi scientists, led by Prof Maqsudul Alam, decoded the genome of this most

dangerous fungus that affects jute, soybean, cotton, tobacco, maize and other crops.

This is the first such invention in the world. It will open up a new horizon for research,

Maqsudul Alam, a professor of microbiology department at University of Hawaii, told reporters

at the media centre of parliament.

The team decoded the genome while working under a government project on the basic and

applied research on jute under the agriculture ministry.

During her scheduled question-answer hour, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina first broke themessage to the MPs. Then the scientists briefed reporters on the invention.

It will help us make a new variety of jute, Md Samiul Haque told reporters, adding that

farmers would benefit from the invention after the scientists managed applied ways for the

    invention.

Chief scientist Maqsudul Alam said necessary measures had been taken to exclusively retain the

rights of the invention in line with the intellectual property rights. - See more at:
