10 reasons for visiting the Jyväskylä Region

1. An ideal destination or stopover. Jyväskylä is right in the centre of Finland, en route to everywhere.

2. Jyväskylä holds a world record which won’t be easily broken: Jyväskylä is home to more buildings designed by master architect Alvar Aalto than any other city in the world.

3. Petäjävesi Old Church and Oravivuori triangulation tower are both Unesco world heritage sites located in the Jyväskylä Region.

4. Staged in Jyväskylä, Neste Oil Rally Finland has frequently been voted the best organised round in the World Rally Championship calendar.

5. Jyväskylä’s pedestrian precinct – acclaimed as Finland’s best – is flanked by busy shopping centres and attractive boutiques.

6. Endless opportunities for sport and outdoor recreation – for instance Rantaraitti, the illuminated 10 km path that circles Lake Jyväsjärvi, was voted Road of the Year in 2005 and is used extensively by walkers, joggers and cyclists.

7. In the Jyväskylä Region boaters and fans of lake cruises are really in their element. Finland’s second largest lake, Päijänne, begins just outside the city centre and stretches a long way south.

8. The Jyväskylä Region is the heart of traditional Finnish sauna culture. The floating sauna that sails Lake Jyväsjärvi and the world’s biggest smoke sauna with room for 150 people are examples of the region’s unique and exotic sauna options.

9. Winner of international awards for its lighting, Jyväskylä now boasts over 80 lighting installations.

10. Voyages of Discovery for Kids offer adventure and excitement for children throughout the year.

Museum of Central Finland, panoramic restaurant and observation tower.

3) The calm of Church ParkLocated in the very centre of Jyväskylä, Kirkkopuisto (Church Park) is a fabulous place to rest your legs or enjoy a memorable picnic with friends and family.

4) Toivolan Vanha Piha – the sound of traditional craftsmen at workThe craftsmen’s courtyard established in the 1800s has been given a new lease of life. The courtyard’s boutiques sell items made in the nearby workshops; relax in the café and listen to the sound of artisans at work. The Museum of Central Finland’s craftsmen’s houses provide a flavour of times past.

5) Jyväskylä market place – a friendly place to shop and meetOn the market place Jyväskylä locals meet up in the covered cafés and while shopping for their daily fruit and veg. The noise and bustle of the market are best enjoyed on a warm summer’s day holding an ice cream.

6) Naissaari – the roar of the rapidsFlanked on both sides by rapids, atmospheric Naissaari – a river island featuring traditional wooden houses – is located in the Jyväskylä suburb of Vaaja-koski. This historic area is home to a café, the Vaajakoski lock on the Keitele canal, the Wanha Woimala (Old Power Station) summer art exhibitions, a summer theatre, a giftware shop, a bathing beach and more.

When you look around, you see culture everywhere The architecture of world-famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto stands out proudly in the streets of Jyväskylä. In addition to Aalto’s masterpieces the foundation stones of Finnish culture can be seen wherever you roam in the Jyväskylä Region. The region’s churches, exhibitions in museums and galleries, as well as first-class performances of theatre, dance and music are sure to leave a lasting impression.

These have to be seen!• The Jyväskylä Region can offer quality theatre and dance productions. Dance performances

of the highest calibre are arranged by the Dance Centre of Central Finland, for instance. Further details of theatre productions can be found on page 11.

• For those interested in architecture Jyväskylä is a real mecca. In addition to 15 Alvar Aalto locations there’s a chance to admire the designs of Wivi Lönn, Finland’s first woman architect.

• Two sites included in Unesco’s world heritage list are located in the Jyväskylä Region. Further details on page 12.

• The small galleries and museums are absolute musts for art enthusiasts. For art exhibitions, why not visit the Wanha Woimala (old power station) on the river island of Naissaari or Galleria Ratamo in the centre of Jyväskylä? At Design Alonen’s gallery you get to experience what art looks like in an old railway carriage.

• The range of museums is so broad it pays to set aside plenty of time. Craft skills and design are showcased at the Alvar Aalto Museum and Craft Museum of Finland. The Museum of Central Finland in turn provides great insights into the history of the province.

• The cradle of Finnish education is undoubtedly Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki, which is Finland’s oldest campus area. It was here that in 1863 Uno Cygnaeus established a Finnish-language teacher training college, which produced Finland’s first women teachers. Just a few years earlier Wolmar Schildt founded Finland’s first Finnish-language secondary school in Jyväskylä.

Get a double helping of culture:

enjoy a play or concert at Jyväskylä City

Theatre designed by Alvar Aalto.

Star of the region

Unesco world heritage sites – real showstoppers 1) Petäjävesi Old Church – masterpiece of construction in wood

Petäjävesi Old Church was completed in 1765 and gained inclusion in Unesco’s world heritage list as a prime example of Nordic wooden architec-ture in 1994. The church is a masterful demonstration of durable construc-tion in wood. Legend has it that the church, like the chapel that stood earlier on the same spot, was built without permission. Small farmers in the area were not prepared to wait for approval from the Stockholm cathedral chapter and erected the cruciform church in 1763 in just 35 days.

2) Oravivuori triangulation tower – 19th century research station In Korpilahti, on the top of Oravivuori hill, stands a triangulation tower. It is one of six points in Finland in the Struve chain. The chain in question is a triangulation chain stretching from the Black Sea to the Arctic Ocean which was used in the 1800s to establish the earth’s shape. On this spot a triangulation tower has been erected to commemorate the importance of the Oravi-vuori (or Puolakka) measuring station to the mapping of Finland. Further information on Oravivuori tel. +358 40 582 5105, +358 400 712 085.

Let your gaze roam when visiting

these Unesco world heritage sites. Just

how would it feel to stand in a nineteenth

century scientist’s shoes and ponder the

shape of the earth with the help of the

Struve chain?

Churches

Town churchJyväskylä’s Town church was completed in 1880. It was designed by architect L.I. Lindqvist. The Town church was the first in Central Finland to be built of stone. The church was originally built next to a market; nowadays it is surrounded by a park, Kirkkopuisto. In the church worshippers sit under a starry sky and look on as Jesus blesses children at the altar. Services in the church are held on Sundays at 10, weekly mass on Thursdays at 13. Guided tours of the church are on offer 14.6.–14.8. daily 11–18. At other times Wed–Fri 11–14.Kirkkopuisto, Jyväskylätel. +358 50 549 7043www.jyvaskylanseurakunta.fi

Taulumäki church – Church of AngelsTaulumäki church is the principal church of Jyväskylä city parish. The church was

completed in 1929 according to plans drawn up by architect Elsi Borg. The church is known as the Church of Angels due to the many depictions of angels found there. The church, built in neoclassicist style, is a long church with a west tower over 30 metres in height. Taulumäki church can hold approximately 700 people. Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 18. The church is also popular as a concert venue. A guide service is available in summer. Open 15.6.–15.8. 12–20.Lohikoskentie 2, Jyväskylätel. +358 14 211 [email protected]

Kuokkala churchKuokkala church was opened in February 2010. The church was designed by architects Anssi Lassila, Teemu Hirvilammi and Jani Jansson. The church, which can seat 275 people, is a unique work of art in every detail. In terms of motif it is a Bread of Life church. The altarpiece was created by artist Pasi Karjula. The church’s exterior is reminis-cent of medieval greystone churches. Services on Sundays at 11. The church is open Tue–Thu 14–16.Syöttäjänkatu 4, Jyväskylätel. +358 50 549 7045www.jyvaskylanseurakunta.fi

Korpilahti churchJyväskylä’s oldest church dates from 1827. The church can hold 850 people and is the largest in the city. The church was designed by Italian-born Charles Bassi. Alvar Aalto’s mark can be seen in renovation work planned by him in 1927. The bell tower designed by Alfred Cavén dates

from 1885. Service on Sundays at 10. Guide service in summer. Open 14.6.–14.8. Mon–Sat 11–19.Kirkonmäentie 1, Korpilahti, Jyväskylätel. +358 50 557 9008www.jyvaskylanseurakunta.fi

Toivolan Vanha Piha – Toivola Old CourtyardAt Toivolan Vanha Piha nine-teenth century tales and tradition meet the present day. Buildings dating from the era of smith Herman Toivola and the Museum of Central Finland’s craftsmen’s homes – the Coppersmith’s House and Carpenter’s House – with their associated activities have brought this wooden courtyard into fresh blossom. In the spirit of Herman Toivola – dubbed an industrialist even by some – once again a variety of items are being produced for the enjoyment of both townspeople and visitors. In the maternity hospital and Toivola’s own house visitors can watch craftsmen at work and buy their products. A pleasant café, Muisto, will be opened at a later date. A smith’s workshop also operates in the courtyard. At the site the Museum of Central Finland offers advice on renovation, study visits and much more.

In the spring of 2013 the focus of attention is customized bicycles. In summer and towards the end of the year exquisitely made craft items enjoy centre stage, while the whole family can participate in craft activities in one of the many workshops. The fascinating permanent exhibition Craft: A Touch of Life has its own audio paths for children and adults, and in the ‘Aistitila’ let your senses guide you: touch, smell and even taste. At the National Costume Centre Finnish national costumes impress with their range of colour. At Paja (work-shop) on the museum’s second floor try out some craft activities for the price of your admission fee (we make a small charge for materials). The museum shop stocks an extensive range of quality Finnish craft products and new design gems. The museum is open Tue–Sun 11–18. Brilliant City of Light!

As the evenings draw in the City of Jyväskylä shines brightly and beautifully. At the darkest time of the year dozens of permanently illuminated locations enhance the city’s architecture and create an atmosphere that is unique, safe and attractive to the eye.

Jyväskylä is a pioneer in Finnish urban illumination and simultaneously the interna-tional Cities of Light association’s northernmost member. Skillfully designed and implemented, the city’s illumination has won accolades also at the global level: Jyväskylä won the international urban illumination city.people.light award. The criteria for the competition win included ecological sustainability alongside aesthetic impression. Carefully considered lighting solutions reduce light pollution, save energy and provide a foundation, for instance, for expanding tourism and business in the lighting branch.

One of the most exciting City of Light happenings is the Light Trilogy show combining light, sound and images in a unique manner staged regularly on the facade of Jyväskylä Lyceum throughout the autumn, winter and spring. The city already has over 80 other magnificent permanently illuminated sites. The newest of these are presented at the City of Light event organised each autumn.

Discover our illuminated sites on one of the guided walking tours arranged by Jyväskylä Region Tourist Information!

Conferences & congresses

Eight good reasons for staging an event in the Jyväskylä Region:

Star of the region

Päijänne brings a feeling of freedom

Down on the jetty life is tranquil. Päijänne’s harbours await you.

Jyväskylä harbour in LutakkoLocated on the shore of Lake Jyväsjärvi, Lutakko harbour is the northernmost passenger harbour on Lake Päijänne with regular services in summer to Lahti, Jämsä, Suolahti and Laukaa. From the harbour it’s just a short stroll to the city centre and its lively pedestrian area. The services in Jyväskylä’s newly refurbished Lutakko harbour are centred around the harbour café. The café is open 30.4.–30.9.2013 daily from 08.00. Visiting craft can take on fuel and drinking water – as well as empty their septic tank and bilge – at the service jetty.

Korpilahti harbourA winner of the Guest Harbour of the Year award, Korpilahti harbour makes an enjoyable spot to take a break for those travelling on land or water. In addition to harbour and restaurant services travellers can explore the works on display in the art gallery or dive into the world of Finnish summer theatre. Also in the area is a craft shop that offers visitors a chance to discover items made by local artisans. Welcome to Korpilahti’s fine new harbour!

Peace, quiet, traditions and a feeling of well-being. Visit the Jyväskylä Region, where Finnish sauna culture was born, and experience sauna in its most genuine, original form. In the Jyväskylä Region sauna is a matter of the heart.

VarjolaFinnish sauna, a great atmosphere, a dash of luxury, jacuzzis, a slice of adventure, the scent of birch, the roar of the rapids – Varjola’s saunas tell their own story. Our smoke saunas are big enough to accommodate large groups and come equipped with hot tubs. The log Kelosauna is a great experience for small groups and the Tent sauna provides some excellent steam right in the lap of nature. Hiking

As your feet get tired, the mind gets fresher. For this reason exploring and experiencing nature is the best counterbalance to the demands of everyday life. Every municipality possesses a number of signposted nature trails and routes that crisscross the varied landscape of the region.

Scenic routes in the city, the depths of the forest, and way up high1) Laukaa’s Metso Trail stretching over dozens of kilometres doesn’t

have to be covered in one go – take advantage of the many lean-to shelters to be found along the route.

2) Korpilahti’s magnificent Vaaruvuori hills are home to 70 endan-gered species.

3) From the summit of Korpilahti’s Oravivuori, 193 metres above sea level, a landscape unfolds which just can’t be missed.

4) Fans of urban hiking should head for Jyväskylä’s Rantaraitti path, which circles Lake Jyväsjärvi. It offers natural surroundings, physical recreation and culture in just the right proportions.

Winter activitiesThree popular ski centres, Laajis, Riihivuori and Häkärinteet offer snow lovers a huge selection of slopes and trails. Which is for you, the speed and excitement of the slalom slope or the calm of a wooded cross-country trail?

For fans of cross-country the Jyväskylä Region offers hundreds of kilometres of pure white trails. Scores of kilometres of these are illuminated. Jump into your cross-country ski shoes and away you go. Further details: www.jyvaskylanseutu.fi/kannat/latuinfo and Tourist Information.

Weather permitting, the Viitaniemi rink is open from November to March, while in mid-winter an ice skating circuit roughly 2.4 km in length is created on Lake Jyväsjärvi. Both are situated close to the centre of the city.

Equipped with refrigerated facilities, our cut-flower sales point can always supply fresh, long-lasting Nuppula roses for customers to take away.

Nuppula Land of Summer FlowersFrom the beginning of May unti late June the five greenhouses that comprise our Land of Summer Flowers are full of summer blooms, perennials and vegetable seedlings grown on site at Viherlandia.
