Message from the PresidentAt Northcentral Technical College (NTC), we are proud to work with our K–12 partners in education to ensure that students throughout the NTC district have opportunities for success. With affordable tuition and exceptional job placement, NTC graduates are well equipped for success in the new economy. Technical college graduates continue to be in demand - with two thirds of the fastest growing occupations requiring a technical college education.

I am pleased to share the 2016-17 Annual Report, which highlights current collaborative partnerships between K–12, NTC and our four-year college articulation partners. We are proud to partner with four-year colleges like Michigan Tech and UW-Stout for engineering and UW-Oshkosh and Upper Iowa for nursing to expand educational options for local students by creating a seamless transition from high school to NTC to bachelor’s degree and beyond. In fact, we have over 400 transfer agreements with over 50 partner colleges to ensure students can start here and go anywhere. As your community’s college, we are committed to providing high quality educational opportunities taught by outstanding faculty in our state-of-the-art facilities. For those who prefer the full college experience, we are proud to announce our partnership for student housing, Timberwolf Suites, a privately managed student apartment community located adjacent to the NTC Wausau campus.

Thank you for working to help our local students prepare for their future. Working collaboratively, we are ensuring local learners are well poised to positively impact the local economy well into the future.

School-to-Career PartnershipThe North Central Wisconsin School-to-Career Partnership is a collaboration of school districts in the NTC district and area businesses working together to build a strong workforce in central Wisconsin. School-to-Career activities and programs help students develop a pathway from education to employment. The programs and activities focus on the academic, technical and soft skills that business and education deem necessary for the future of our youth.

Grant funds received during the 2016-17 school year totaled $913,062. Of this amount, 22 percent ($201,170) was distributed to participating high schools. In addition, grant dollars supported the cost of textbooks, supplies & materials, testing fees and other expenses for academy participants.

NTC Pathway AcademiesNorthcentral Technical College partners with area school districts to provide juniors and seniors an opportunity to start college while still in high school. Students participated in high school pathway academies, earning credits often leading to college credentials and/or industry-recognized certifications. The academies are completed at no cost to students through support from Northcentral Technical College, area high schools and grant funds.

NTC offered Pathway Academies for students to obtain the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Technical Diploma, Nursing Assistant (CNA) Technical Diploma, IT CompTIA A+ certification and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Technical Diploma. Students also had the option of enrolling in a personalized academy related to Accounting and Agriculture pathways.

Regional Academies Regional Academies provide partnering school districts an opportunity to work together with NTC to offer college-level coursework to students, providing a pathway to higher education. Academies are composed of Dual Credit or contracted courses within the same career cluster, allowing high school students to earn 2–15 college credits that ladder seamlessly into NTC programs or other institutions of higher education.

Of the high school seniors participating in high school academies during 2016-17, 32 percent transferred directly into NTC programs in 2016–17.

Youth ApprenticeshipYouth Apprenticeship (YA) is a rigorous one- or two-year elective statewide program for high school juniors and seniors. It combines academic and technical classroom instruction with mentored, paid, on-the-job learning that makes a real-world connection for students.

Twenty-nine schools participated in the North Central Wisconsin School-to-Career Partnership YA program in 2016–17. The YA program is funded by a state grant and supported by participating school districts and local businesses. 198 YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP GRADUATES RESPONDED TO AN EXIT SURVEY: 70 percent reported they were offered continued employment with their YA employer. 73 percent of these reported they were offered employment related to their YA program area and 72 percent accepted these employment offers.

Events & ActivitiesNTC helps middle and high students better prepare for their future career by giving them the opportunity to explore NTC programs through hands-on activities. Of the 469 seniors who attended NTC events in 2015-16, 158 (34%) enrolled at NTC during the 2016–17 year.

8th Grade Career Fair: 8th grade students speak with professionals, ask questions and get a feel for various professions as they consider future careers.

Campus Exploration Days: Sophomores explore different programs and career options by participating in hands-on activities at NTC’s Antigo, Medford and Phillips campuses.

Campus Visit Days: High school juniors and seniors explore career pathways by participating in hands-on activities at the Wausau Campus.

Commit to College: High school juniors and seniors interact with faculty from NTC’s programs, learning about opportunities for future careers. Students can also apply and be accepted to the college at the event.

Focus on Your Future: A new student orientation designed specifically for graduating seniors. Students meet with their advisors, register for fall classes, learn about campus resources, tour NTC and participate in NTC’s Spring Fling.

Get SMART: Students in grades 5–8 participate in Science & Math Activies using Real-World Thinking during a day of learning and fun on NTC’s Wausau, Antigo and Phillips campuses. Activities emphasize science, technology, engineering and math skills that help students think about where their interests and aptitudes can take them.

Get SMART. Live SMART.: Students in grades 8–10 participate in real-life health scenarios designed to help them learn how to work as a healthcare team member and respond accordingly in a simulated environment.
