30 - 60 Minutes Per SessionPlan 30 to 60 minutes per STEAMvestigation and 60 minutes for the Unit Challenge.

In 10-day programs, each STEAMvestigation adds a 2nd session to pursue individual Redesign projects based on testing data collected by the class.

Design and Redesign with Data Driven Decisions

Most STEAMvestigations include a testing phase. Young designers are encouraged to test their original models, collect data, and analyze results to jumpstart brainstorming discussions. ( Yes, even in kindergarten! )

5-Day and 10-Day Design Units 5 subject-focused STEAMvestigations build skills and knowledge in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

Tell StoriesBegin each

STEAMvestigation with a story, poem, song, or nonfiction

piece. Teachers or camp leaders read to younger children, setting the tone for a week

of adventures in engineering design.

Growth Mindset by Design

The engineering design cycle takes learners on a journey from asking questions through dreaming, drawing, designing, constructing, testing, and

redesign. The process encourages testing to failure, where failing

becomes part of the cycle.

“Introducing the engineering

design cycle at this age teaches young

children that failure is not defeat: it is the beginning of a

process.” -Jeannie Ruiz, Curriculum Developer

Start with a story, poem, or reading. Investigate science, tech, engineering, art, and math through 5 subject focused STEAMvestigations. Then use new skills and understanding as part of the engineering design process during the Unit’s culminating challenge. Teamwork, individual contributions, and the engineering design cycle help students construct and showcase multi-step solution-oriented projects.

S Fab Fabric Engineers test materials in the sun and design hanging pennantsT Wagons and Weight focuses on moving materials from one location to anotherE Gumball Runs uses gravity to design the slowest possible gumball run (marble or ball run)A Graphic Design from ancient cave pics to modern emojis, use images to sell ideas.M Designing Containers Geometric nets turn flat patterns into bags and boxes for your business.

UNIT CHALLENGE: Design and prototype the model of an entrepreneurial “pop-up” business.

Tiny House on WheelsSTEAMvestigations focus on squares, triangles, cubes, and square pyramids, geometric nets,

wheels, and axels to aid design and construction of a tiny rolling house and characters.

TinkerMaker CircuitsTroubleshoot motion, balance, shapes, materials and tetrahedra, then use simple copper circuits in the design and construction of a wobbling mechatronic TinkerMaker Art ‘Bot.

MOON BUGGYUse nontraditional materials to design

& test a moon buggy.

COPPER TAPE CARDSCreate copper tape circuits that light

LED cards & towns.

LAUNCH PADTest bands and

paper planes on a DIY launch pad.

ORIGAMI BUGMARKSTroubleshoot an

origami bookmark with glowing bulbs.

TETRAHEDRA GAMESUse geometric nets to create tetrahedra to be used in games.

TINKERMAKER ‘BOTUse motors, gears,

and switches to engineer an art ‘Bot.

WEATHER OR NOTWind socks and whirligigs build

understanding of air in motion.

BOXY BIRDHOUSEProtect the baby

bird (feather) from gusts of wind with a

boxy bird house.

WHEEL AND AxelDesign and construct

a sturdy wagon to haul a load from

garden to market.

POLYGON PICASSOTurn drawings and

pictures into Cubist inspired mosaics.
