Au order from theSecretary of War, datedas farhack asMarth last, forbids the impress-ment of articles ofsubsistence en route tothis city; and no Ompressments of smh goodshave been made at alt, whether ou their wayto urwltliiu the city; uor are Governmentagents permitted to impress at depotß ,outhe highways.* They have madenosuch im-pressments.

If the speculatorswere driven oil, and theSubsistence Department andconsumers willagree to unite and confine their purchasesto theschedule of prices established by theCoinminstallers of the State, as they bavebeeu invited to do, the supply would befound abundant, for both.

but tf tbespeculator should be allowed topurchase adlibitum, as they are now doingto a greater orless extent iv this city, andboard the necessaries of life, meting themout only in merciless extortion, ashe please.,serious evils and cnibiirrassuieuts to ourcountry will arise.

Drive speculation off, andit will be foundthat producers and manufacturers haveenough aud to spare for both thearmy andthepeople.

Our Soldiers' Suffering Families. To the Editorof tlie Dispatch :

The Army Committeeof theYoung Men'sC'hri'tiau Association is a safe and conve-nient channel for supplying relief to thefamilies of C*_r noble soldier,, 'li. is com-mittee for .more thau two years have labo-riously und faithfully distributed the bene-factions of those who have-practically sym-pathized with this needyportion of our pop-ulation, painful as it is, candor compels theadmission that recently tbe receipts of tbecommittee have sadly diminished. Is thisthe result of indifference, or is it simply in-advertence. We would fain, believe thelat-ter, lias the self-sacTificing soldier, separa-ted fromhis wife and children, tighting ourbattles, forour rights, in tbe field, lost theaffection of the benevolent and the affluentat home? Care wenot that these widowedwivesand orphanedchildren die of cold andstarvation . Are their husbandsaud fatherseugagediv some wild and recklets crusade, orare they giving their health, their blood, their limbs, and their lives, for one of thenoblest causes upon which the sun ofHeaven evershone. Gained, we are a great{>eople; lost, we are ruined. Let us, then,v thiscity, and all over the country, whocannot go to tbe field, and whose pocketsareplethoric with Confederatenotes, give orsend liberal sums to Wm. P. Munford, Esq.,Chairman, that the wives andchildren ofourmatchless defenders may have food, fuel, andclothing. Humanity.

Gen. Banks has just issued throe longorders. The chief one is in respect tothe opening of the Mississippi. ThatGeneral is touching in his description ofthe value of the Valley of the Missis-sippi, uiddeclaresthat, notwithstandingthe ravages of war, it is a splendid fieldfor Yankeeingenuity. '-Theinhabitableglobe doesnot offer a morenoble theatrefor intelligententerprise than the Valleyof the Mississippi. Neverwas acountrybetterworth fighting for?better worthpreserving." This flourish is theprefaceto calling to arms every one liable tomilitary duty, in order to hold the lovelycountry.
