HEARTLAND HERITAGE AND HABITAT INITIATIVE
Through the Heartland Heritage and Habitat Initiative, Ducks Unlimited is enhancing, restoring and protecting critical migration habitat throughout Kansas. These shallow and seasonal wetlands provide an oasis for migrating waterfowl, other wetland birds and numerous non-migratory species. These conserved lands also help preserve our outdoor traditions and hunting heritage.
the principal source of aquifer recharge
These small, shallow wetlands dot the landscape in the southern Great Plains where water is scarce. They sit above the Ogallala Aquifer, which is our largest underground water reserve. Playas catch the rainfall
runoff and allow the water to slowly seep through the soil into the underlying aquifer, “recharging” it while cleaning contaminants from the water as it percolates downward, which further protects the aquifer.
Kansas playas provide habitat for waterfowl and clean water for livestock. Playas also benefit people by filtering water and recharging the Ogallala Aquifer. Through workshops Ducks Unlimited has developed with partners, such as the Playas Lake Joint Venture, Kansas ranchers have learned how conserving their playas can enhance their operations.

Ducks Unlimited is working across the region to protect and restore these important wetlands so they can function
properly and maximize groundwater recharge. Though playas alone cannot solve our regional
water demands, their conservation will be a critical component of the solution.

HELP RESTORE CHEYENNE BOTTOMS*
The 20,000 acres of shallow wetlands and grass provide ideal habitat for millions of
migrating birds annuallyas they rest and feed.
20,000 Adds almost $3 million to
Kansas economy. Some 60,000 people visit each year. Hunters, birders, outdoors people come
from across the country.
$3,000,000Attracts:
• 350 bird species, 40 migrating species
• Half of North America’s shorebirds
• Whooping cranes, other critical/
endangered species
350 & 40
Since the last major renovation in the 1990s, the basin has
filled with silt, compromising water control structures.
KDWPT will repair and replace infrastructure, remove
silt and make other improvements. Ducks Unlimited has
pledged to raise $300,000 in private dollars to support this
large-scale restoration.
BRING BACK THE BOTTOMS
The Bottoms needs our help as its ability to attract and support birds has declined.
