THREE PROGRAMS SUPPORTEDBY KIWANIS CLUB OF BLUE RIDGE WINCHESTER
REDBUD RUN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL READING OASISWith matching financial funds from Kiwanis International we were able todesign a "Reading Oasis" at Redbud Run Elementary School on FirstWoods Drive in Winchester. -Aided by members of the Sherando Key Club,an under-used alcove was painted, furniture purchase and books stackedon shelves for the more than 650 students to read at school or take home.Redbud is only partially accredited with the state of Virginia with a recenttest score of 70 for reading skills. The state benchmark for accreditation is75.CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH PANDA PANTRYThe city of Winchester has thousands of hungry children with theWinchester School Board records identifying nearly 3000 students thisschool year who qualify for free or reduced cost breakfasts and lunches - astunning 67% of the student population. In some cases meals provided bythe school are the only meals these children can count on. This makesweekends and holidays particularly stressful. Christ Episcopal Churchhelps feed 70 students from Frederick Douglass Elementary School overthe weekends and holidays, naming their program after the school's pandabear mascot. Every week of the school year, volunteers pack foodpurchased at a discount into bags that are then discreetly handed out to thestudents to take home for the week. Extra food is prepared and distributedto families over Christmas and spring vacation weeks.BIKERS 4 BIKESEvery Christmas a group of motorcycle riders organize to provide bicyclesand helmets to underprivileged children in Frederick County andWinchester identified by the Salvation Army. They know that familiesstruggling to make ends meet, the luxury of a bike isn't an option. Theynote that as riders of motorcycles who love riding and enjoying the openroad, every child deserves the thrill of riding. They provided 50 children withbikes as gifts this past Christmas
