ent sports, races and tournaments that will be insti-
tutionalized for every year.

Grunions On La Playa On Tuesday May 3, Jon Gilortenau, owner of Hotel & Restaurant Bar Casablanca Inn in Kino Nuevo, went to see the beach in front of the hotel
but had to run back inside for his camera. As this was what he found: Hundreds of grunion. The Grunion is a small fish found only off the
coast of California, USA and Mexico. In our country we are fortunate that the grunion is on the coast of Baja California in the Pacific Ocean
off the coast of our state in the Sea of Cortez.
Usually, between March and June, after the full moon and new moon at high tide, grunion females reach the sand where they, keeping their
head upright, dig in the sand with their tail until they are buried up to their pectoral fins and then lay their eggs. The male grunions then
wrap themselves around the female to fertilize the eggs that will remain hidden in the sand. All this can happen in just 30 seconds.
Most females spawn about six times during the season and can lay up
to 18,000 eggs during a season.
The eggs stay hidden a few inches deep in the sand. Until the new
grunion are born with the next high tide and are washed into the sea
about 10 days after the show happened.

The Truth About Tiburón Island Last month my wife and I decided to explore a little to the center of Tiburón Island. We left Punta Chueca where we got some
supplies. We walk along the edge of the Tiburón beach and the desert to the mountains over the island. We passed through canyons
with great variety of plants, some of them poisonous. We also found many large and small animals, reptiles and many species of birds
of beautiful colors came out freely from trees. Following the tour, around noon, the heat grew more. We needed to stay hydrated and
had to use more water than we had anticipated. We walked up to the hills where we went through a valley of breathtaking beauty
with many canyons and streams, many flowers and very green plants, it really didn’t seem like a desert. We went down one of the stre-
ams, heard noises and suddenly from the trees a group of 6 mule deer jumped out, which reminded me of a very exciting time when I
went hunting with my father, rest in peace, and I learned, at the sight of the beauty of natur, that as tired as you may be, that same
nature gives you the energy to keep going and keep discovering. You never know how far you can go.
Finally we reached the cabin where we were completely alone but still felt like something was with us. There were many tres around
and a creek on one side where we found enough wáter to stay there for a week! The only problem? There was a swarm of bees on the
pond hole so we had to face them carefully to get the wáter. We got enough to last us until we returned home.
The hut had only a mattress and an old solar photocell from which we managed to get some light. Suddenly, as we rested and prepared
our dinner, we saw a fairly strong light passing from the north to the south of the island off the hills of the valley. But then, suddenly,
the light disappeared. Which made me realize that we were not alone and something strange happened in that place, something is
manifested through the area.
I woke up at dawn to hear strange noises in the cabin and I noticed that the light had left on was off even though there was no wind.
We were so confused we could not sleep and decided to wait for dawn. When it came and everything was quiet, we felt more confident
to return to the beach where a 3 and a half hour walk awaited us.
As we walked, we thought of all the things we had seen. Then suddenly I heard a loud "watch out!" It iwas my wife. I was standing 20
inches away from a 5 foot rattlesnake. The snake felt the vibration of my feet and went towards the bushes as jumped back. I was very
lucky and God was very good to me at that time, we managed to emerge unscathed from this journey. haha well I hope you like it was
a part of the many things that have gone through those courses and in those remote areas. Saludos.

The Largest & Richest Island In Mexico Tiburon Island is an ecological reserve that is more than 1.208 km2
making it the largest island in Mexican waters. It has mountains,
deserts, rivers and beaches..
* 298 plant species have been found on it, 96 of which have not been found on any other island in
the Gulf.
The Majestic Tiburón Island is also home to:
*39 species of reptiles
*10 species of marine mammals
*178 bird species
*209 species of insects
*52 species of terrestrial mammals
Including the large bighorn sheep, introduced to the island in 1975
because its existence was threatened by excessive hunting. A total of 20
Sheep were introduced, of these came the current population (between 600 and 700).

Kino In May The Kino Bay digital photo contest was very close
this month. All photographs submitted showed the
beauty and majesty of BK.
The photos displayed, (in order) are the winners
of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place but all photos and con-
testants deserve a big applause.
There are future plans of dividing the contest into
2 different categories: professional and amateur.
Kino Bay never fails to impress anyone who has
the opportunity to look at it, there's always some-
thing unique happening. Next time you come
down for a visit, you better be prepared with a
camera in hand!

Bay Crossing
The Vets Play Ball
The swimming event, Bay Crossing: Alcatraz 2011 was dedicated to Mr. Miguel Cuevas Lozano, a 70
year old swimmer who won five medals at the U.S. National Championship. This swimming event,
organized by the Sports Commission in the State of Sonora, in coordination with the State Associa-
tion of Swimming and Masters Swimming Team Sonora, involved 120 swimmers. The distance was
1.250 meters starting from Alcatraz Island. The categories were youth, first strength, super veter-
ans, masters and children. In the latter, the distance was 500 meters on the sea shore. The winners
received medals or certificates of participation

Teams from Kino Bay, Mayos of Navojoa from Sonora played ball against teams from Tucson and Chandler Arizona at the sixth edition of the
International Veterans Baseball Tournament in Bahia de Kino on May 28th and 29th in the Javier Ramos López "The Champion. " edition.
Among those present at the opening ceremony were the Commissioner of BK, Dr Peter Moraga Silva, the Harbor Master: Ing. Fco Bejarano and
the Executive Coordinator of The Awakening of a Riviera, AC. At the ceremony, the US
flag and national anthem were presented and sung followed by the presentation the
Mexican flag and national anthem sung by the student "Chuyita."
The first ball was pitched by the Commissioner and batted by Captain Bejarano. The
winners were:
1st place: Chandler, AZ
2 nd place: Tucson, AZ
3rd place: Bahía de Kino
The MVP was the pitcher and man-
ager of the winning team, Mr. Santos
Gonzales.

While the 120 swimmers reached the goal of Alcatraz Bay Crossing, 2011, a little later in the papala area, Frankie was busy with his own
personal challenge. Practice perhaps, or maybe hoping someone will know of it and help him get to his dream Francisco Javier Valenzuela del
Castillo swam 5 km. Gerson and his fellow "Chapo" Guevara cheering from the beach. He tells of every minute, every wave of it in his blog. An
energizing gel, a cramp and one last kilometer of swimming before he reaches his swimming goal he gets a cramp. When finally reaches his goal
on the beach, his teammates receive and give encourage him for a Little while. He hurriedly gets in the showe, gets dressed and 9 minutes later
he’s on the run! On his 50km run.
THE RUN (In his own words)
We left in good spirits: Gerson, the person of Agua Prieta, Shorty, the police officer in his ATV and I . 5 KM later Zabdi joins us. Somewhere
in the way, at a beer store called "Deposito Kino Nuevo" the manager put a bucket of water and soaked sponges out to cool us down. Aslo bottles
of water to hydrate us; he did this each time we pased by.
Later, Alfonso Ramírez joins us. There were people on both sidewalks were who yelled out words of encouragement, others are sounding the horn,
some wave from their cars, others from their homes. A little barefoot girl ran with us for a few feet, I hope to hear, one day in the future, that she
became an ultra marathon runner. The sun's rays getting stronger and start to feel an unbearable increasing cramp, I had to stop. But after a light
massage, once again I take the pace. Weeks before this challenge, I had an injury. I got off the workout and those were the consequences.
People were cheering saying "Come run again in Kino." A steady rise was the last 10km. With 49 miles and 5K swim it was getting harder. 300 mts
left, the cramps reappear, but now in both legs. I take a few steps, the goal is so close, my companion Zabdi tells me to lean on him but I’m almost
there and want to cross the finish line by my own strength. Then out of nowhere, I get the strength needed, I get to the goal, I've done it! it was
worth the effort, this is something that will stay for life. Anything is possible with training and a deep determination. It is achievable to those who
are determinded to do it.
My dream is to participate in the IronMan in Cozumel and to go to the World Selective Ultra marathon, in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
Economics is an obstacle to attend these events. I count on your support and are involved in them, the filing fee this year is $ 575 dollars plus trans-
portation, lodging, meals, transportation, bicycle, etc. In addition to not having even a bicycle. Appreciate your support.

Fishing Derby: The Results It's the 3rd Annual Fishing Polly Boyles Derby hosted by Kino Bait & Tackle, the fishing shop
in Kino and yet it was the first time that Mexican citizens participate. Normally only foreign-
ers enroll each year. They come to Kino from all over north America and europe to partici-
pate yearly in this open sea tournament.
The first place winner was Jose Cano (right) of
Hermosillo with this white sea bass weighing 47.5
lb. Jose won first place in the categories of white
sea bass and biggest game fish of the tournament.
Second place was won by Bob Weber (left) with 18

Let’s Go Fishing On November 11 - 13 It was decided by the newly formed Organizing Committee of the International Corvina Fishing Tournament
at the Sea of Cortez in Kino Bay. At a meeting in the Pargo Rojo Restaurant, it was agreed to move the date
because the tides be better on these dates. Another major change is that this time only one corvina will be
accepted per day for weighing. Also, specific camping areas will be designated to anyone wishing to camp
out there. A good portion of the proceeds from the tournament will go to help different institutions such as
CAME BK, Ecological Clubs, United Families among others.
Committee members are: Chairman of the Citizen Council of BK and owner of the restaurant, Mr. Luis Alberto
López Murrieta, Executive Coordinator of The Awakening of a Riviera, Mr. Carlos Cumming Mexia, the Captain of the

PRESCOTT COLLEGE: 20 Years Later This month the Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies of Prescott College BK celebrated 20 years of existence. Tad Pfister, Lorayne Maltz,
Edward Boyer, Doug Hulmes and Thomas Fleishner. Were among the ones present. They were also the first pioneers who “began to build
and promote what is now the station," said Jacy Brunkow, the new Managerof the Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies from Prescott
College in BK.
Jacy Brunkow added that although officially the center was institutionalized in 1991,
the work in Kino had begun 10 years before that. With classes and programs that the
pioneers, Doug Hulmes and Thomas Fleischner, carried out using Islandia Marina in
Kino Viejo base before building what is now known as “Prescott College BK” in New
Kino. Also present were the first teachers and students, along with today’s staff who
enjoyed presentations about the great achievements that they dreamt of one day.
“One of the biggest achievements over the 20 years has been just watch it grow.

conservation and
environmental edu-
cation (which) did
not exist until 10 years ago ... The very growth
is one of the visible achievements “ says Jacy.
Also discusses ecological BK clubs, which are the fruits of the environmen-
tal education program. The first ecology club was organized 10 years ago in
high school. The excitement was evident in his voice and his face when he
talked about the clubs that have followed it in grade school and high school.
This year, they add one more achievement. A community program with the-
Seri tribe and Colombian anthropologist, Kathy Ramos. The program seeks to explore the relationship of scien-
tists, biologists and other professionals working in or interested in working with the community, linking directly
to a member of the Seri community. Center funds come from foundations such as the U.S. National Science Founda-
tion, the Christensen Fund, Prescott College in Arizona among others. "It is not a donation, its a commitment" says Jacy.
All students at the Center are college students from Prescott College AZ who voluntarily choose to come to take courses that will help them
focus more on their career. These students are given the opportunity to live in the palapa located at the top of the library." We get stu-
dents who are focused because they come by their own interest."
The stay of the students depends on the courses
they come to take which can be one semester or 3
to 4 weeks. “2 or 3 times a year we have students
taking multiple courses at once or come back for
more courses. Enabling these students to stay up to
one year.” When asked where he sees the center
over the next 20 years, said: "Seeing the progress
of these 20 years, there is much room to grow wit-
hin our programs. it's about moving forward and
strengthening the programs and research." To
celebrate 20 years of success, the current & former
staff created a mural with the center’s logo.

Tucson Mayo In Sonora "I‘ve been traveled a lot of years around the world, & the truth is that in Sonora, I have never seen a situation of risk or insecurity,
for that reason, I want to invite the citizens of Arizona to visiting this state... it is also a beautiful place. Our access to the sea, our Riviera
which is just 4 hour drive from Tucson, " said Mr. Bob Walkup, mayor of Tucson, AZ in a joint press conference with Sonora Governor Gui-
llermo Padres Elias.
“In fact I am a promoter of Sonora in Arizona and before the governor of Sonora, my friend Guillermo, I offer to serve as an ambassador for
your state in Arizona, because it is important that they know they can travel to Sonora.” He added, “... The people of Arizona can feel fully
confident to travel to Sonora, Sonorans may also be totally comfortable and confident when visiting Arizona and Tucson in particular our
city." Bob Walkup and his wife have been traveling continuously to Sonora.
In turn, the Governor Guillermo Padres agreed that the beaches of Sonora are also the beaches of the citizens of Arizona and they can have
the confidence that their families are safe during their visit.
Walkup visited the state with a delegation of entrepreneurs from Pima County to
participate in the golf tournament Uniting Nations Cup, organized by the Mayan
Palace and the Professional Golf Association of the United States.

SONORA’s “Stoplight” Of The Future The government of Nuevo León used the state of Sonora as an example in reference to tools and strategies implemented by the State.
This month, Nuevo León state officials spent in our state of Sonora to see how the state works in areas related to the “crime stoplight” of the
crime.
The “Crime stoplight” is a fundamental tool used by policymakers in Sonora to reduce crime rates.
“We emphasize the need to use ... an excellent mechanism for coordination and ex-
change of best practices for each municipality to imitate what others do best,” said a
representative of the state of Nuevo León, “(it) has been used for years in the state of
Sonora and the results are obvious.” Sonora is the only border state where the crime
rate in general is down. Shown in the graph on the left.
