It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 15 years since Facebook transformed the internet into a massive global net-work for communication. Since that time, many churches have yet to create a Facebook page, let alone creatively think of ways to use this now ‘old’ technology to expand their mission and ministry. Similarly, the majority of new time visi-tors find their way to our churches not by the signs on the road, but through Google searches. One would think that churches would be actively updating and improving their search engine effectiveness, but many churches have no idea what a Google Ad Word or SEO is or how they can be used to help their ministries. Throughout history, however, churches have been at the forefront of using technology to facilitate deeper disci-pleship: the Apostle Paul used the new technology of the codex (a bound book vs. scrolls) to spread the Gospel across Asia Minor, churches installed organs, the most sophisticated technologies of their day, to deepen worship experienc-es, and the Christian reformers used the Gutenberg press to make the Bible accessible to everyday Christians. How do we as 21st-century churches use the technology is available to us, and how do we as churches allow those technologies to become vehicles for discipleship?

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:
Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ
I used to give a small booklet called the “Three Simple Rule” that was written by Rueben Job to student who finished their course of study on confirmation. The booklet articulates well on the teachings of the “Wesleyan Way of Living.”
As you might know, the first simple is “Do no harm.” It is not that complicated. Even a lit-tle child can understand what that means. This rule saved me from uttering a wrong word or giving a wrong response.
The second rule is “Do good.” The words of Jesus and of Wesley suggest that doing good is a universal command. Doing good, like doing no harm, is a proactive way of living.
The third rule is “Stay in love with God.” Spiritual disciplines keep us in that healing and redeeming presence. The power of God forms and transforms each of us more and more into the image of the One we seek to follow. When we practice this, it works wonders in transforming the world around us.
I am always curious as to why the “Do no harm” is the first rule of life over “Do good.” Then I realized that if we do respect our differences and not intentionally harm or cross over boundaries, we could have a more harmonious life. Therefore it should be the first rule of life.
Currently our denomination is facing issues over the LGBTQI and struggling on how to bring all of together as children of God. I hope you prepare for the Annual Conference meeting with prayers when you attend on June 12-15 in Redlands, California.

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER
Greetings Brothers and Sisters of the Hawaii District United Methodist Church,
Yikes! Or should I say, “Yippee!!” Summer is upon us and soon families will re-unite as college stu-
dents will return home for school break, working people will take vacations to enjoy time away
from their jobs, and homeowners will begin gardening and home improvement projects. Isn’t it wonderful that
God gives us seasons that are predictable (for the most part) so that we can anticipate or plan new things and re-
newed things, attempt to re-organize our houses, and simply have time to enjoy being in God’s creation!
Summer also means that the Cal-Pac Annual Conference is also upon us. This year’s Conference, “I See A New
Church”, will be a time filled with a mixture of business-at-hand, worship, anger, fellowship, sadness, discern-
ment, disappointment, chaos, peace…. I sincerely regret that I cannot attend and experience this year’s confer-
ence, as I have very important tasks to undertake that I’m responsible for at our small State office. While I’m at
work, my thoughts and prayers will be at Redlands. I know that in the midst of the Conference, God’s Spirit will
be present. May everyone humble themselves, be still, and listen for God’s voice—He might whisper. He might
roar. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I pray for Peace and Unity.
With warmest Aloha,
Lynn Owan
