Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:

[Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ]

The precious summer is almost over. How was your summer in 2018?

You must have had numerous, wonderful moments with your loved ones throughout this past summer. But last week, we had a time of trial for all those who live in Hawaii. We were challenged by Hurricane Lane, which was predicted to hit the islands and leave us with catastrophic destruction. Now, we are able to pause and give thanks to God as we remember Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” Yes, indeed God is God of the universe.

This summer, I was gone for more than 20 days for several meetings including the School of Congregational Development, which was held in San Diego, CA. The theme of the school was “Momentum.” I had a chance to participate and learn about “Momentum” in what we need in our local churches and within our denomination. The school provided practical resources of many areas including spiritual formation, Christian education, lead-ership development, worship, and evangelism. I was certainly inspired and motivated to ignite momentum for our shared ministries in our district and in our Annual Conference.

With that passion I attended the Western Jurisdiction Korean Lay Leadership Training along with Bishop Grant Hagiya, who was one of Keynote speakers at the training. I was also invited to join the panel of “The Future of United Methodist Church and the Role of Korean UMC in this momentum.” It was held at the beautiful Zephyr Point Conference in Lake Tahoe. There were 165 lay members and 20 clergies who came to learn about lead-ership skills and the future of UMC beyond Feb. 2019. I was impressed by the lay leader-ship of the Korean Community for their maturity and their intentional effort to bring the community together after Feb. 2019. Bishop Grant Hagiya who was with them for the en-tire retreat created a circle of trust with the lay and clergy. What a wonderful momen-tum we had as a family of God. Who are you?” said the Caterpillar…

“I-I hardly know, Sir, just at present,” Alice replied rather shyly, “at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.” Lewis Carroll said those lines in his book “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland”. I am mentioning this to describe my understanding of human sexuality as my bishop at that time, Bishop Roy Sano invited me on the task force to discuss the Human Sexuality at our Annual Conference, 1996. I hope that God continuously leads and guides us on how to love our God and our neighbors in our midst.

With my prayers and love,

Rev. Se Hee Han

Hawaii District Superintendent

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER

Greetings, Brothers and Sisters of the Hawaii District United Methodist Churches!

Thank God that Hurricane Lane became a tropical storm and lost its destructive wind speed! During the “warning” period, I appreciated reading Facebook posts referring to Mark 4:35-41, when Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”. We were all praying

for the winds to calm down and for Lane to change its path. Thank You Lord, for hearing our prayers! We must continue to pray for our neighbors on Hawaii Island and Maui, who experienced destruction from the flooding, landslides, fires and steady rains. We also pray for the first responders and the agencies that are providing shelter for the victims. May they feel God’s comfort and assurance that they are not alone.

From August 16 to 19, I had the privilege and honor of being part of a team who organized and sponsored this year’s Hawaii Women’s Walk to Emmaus at St. Anthony’s Retreat Center. By the way, did you know that this event does NOT involve physically walking a long distance? The Walk is a faith journey with other Christian believers who want to live full lives, walking and talking with and listening to Jesus. As I sat with my small group, ranging in age from 18 to 60-something, I was reminded about the facets of God’s Amazing Grace and how His Spirit works in our lives. I listened as our group shared their thoughts and “aha” mo-ments. We were all inspired to use our time, gifts and talents to strengthen the ministries of our local churches, and to serve others in the name of Jesus Christ. My “aha” moment was realizing that the “Transformation” that Bishop Grant Hagiya is encouraging all the local churches within the Cal-Pac Confer-ence to embrace, was taking place at this Walk!

I know that not everyone is interested in the Walk to Emmaus program but I must say that I believe those who follow the Biblical teachings and Wesleyan theology of Grace that is shared at the Walk will surely be equipped to transform themselves, their churches, their communities and the world. I hope that our Dis-trict Lay Leader Team (Minja Choe, Francis Fukumoto and myself) can provide the Hawaii District laity with new opportunities to affirm their faith and be empowered to share God’s Love with the world!

May you shine the Light of Christ in all you do! With warmest Aloha, Lynn Owan

Bits and Pieces

Ann Thede, the spouse of Rev. Gaius Thede, has reached her journey on August 10th, 2018

and is with the Lord. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 2:00 pm at

Wesley UMC. Pastor Piula Ala`ilima will be presiding over the service.

Rev. David Henry Sr., a former pastor at Lihue United, has finished his course in faith on Au-

gust 12th, 2018 and now rests from his labors. A Maui Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Sep-

tember 29th at 10:30 am at Lahaina UMC. Pastor Paul Tangonan will be presiding over the service.

Please lift up prayers for Rev. Robert Montgomery, former pastor at Wesley and Lahaina UMC, and his

family. His beloved wife, Margaret, recently passed away on August 25th, 2018.

Please pray for the Big Island and Maui who are suffering from flood and/or fire damages due to Hurri-

cane Lane. Let us also give thanks to God that the hurricane downgraded to a tropical storm and did not

cause further damage as predicted to the other Hawaiian Islands.

Please pray for the victims and their families whose lives are now forever changed by the mass shooting

in Jacksonville, Florida. It is now the 232nd mass shooting in the US in the year 2018.

Congratulations to Parker UMC on their upcoming 90th anniversary on Saturday, September 1st. Service

time will begin at 10:00 am, following with a luncheon at 11:00 am.

Congratulations to Rev. Emy Cruz and his family! He is blessed with a new grandson, Psalm David Cruz.

Strength for the Journey October 14-18, 2018

Camp Mokuleia The next SFTJ retreat will be 4:00pm Sunday October 14 through noon Thursday October 18, 2018, again at Camp Mokuleia in Waialua. SFTJ is a spiritual retreat sponsored by the United Methodist Church, but open to any person who is diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. It is now in its 30th year in the CalPac Conference, and the 18th consecutive year in Hawaii. SFTJ is under the oversight of the Cal-Pac Conference AIDS Task Force, headed by Rev. Steve Marshall. The Hawaii SFTJ Camp Dean is Rev. Dr. Fran Wiebenga, and campers who have attended in prior years are being notified and sent registration forms; camp staff is now being recruited.

Most of those attending are on disability and need a scholarship for part of all of the cost of $200. We also would greatly appreciate airline miles to help bring people from the neighboring islands. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. To make a donation or if you know someone who might benefit from this spiritual retreat that also provides life giving healing experiences, please contact Rev. Dr. Fran Wiebenga at [email protected] or at 808-927-5949. All information is kept strictly confidential. Mahalo nui loa!
