Update on the Chapter from Carl Shumpert

Staff from the National Administrative Office have been on campus this semester and have recruited an interest group of 30 men while continuing to add new members. The men recruited are involved on and off campus in organizations including Outdoor Emory, Emory Varsity Tennis, Oxford Basketball, Club Lacrosse, Emory ROTC, and Emory Volunteer Police.

Throughout the recruitment process, emphasis was placed on recruiting men that exceed KA’s academic standard, with over 75% of them exceeding a 3.0 GPA. These men are receiving officer and operational training from staff and this will continue in the upcoming weeks.

This group of men will restore the Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order at Emory University. A recolonization and induction ceremony took place on Friday, March 23. The National Administrative Office anticipates the Epsilon Chapter will charter by the end of spring 2019.

The University fully supports Kappa Alpha Order’s return to the Greek community.

Carlton O. “Carl” Schumpert (Beta Gamma – College of Charleston ’10) Associate Director for Chapter Development at Kappa Alpha Order

The Induction and Recolonization Ceremony, held on March 23, 2018, at the Miller Ward Alumni House, was a great opportunity to meet

potential new members of the KA Emory Provisional Chapter and to celebrate the recolonization of the Epsilon Chapter.

Emory Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Marlon Gibson floated the idea that Epsilon alumni and KA National should begin hosting interest group events in 2017 to drum up interest in our recolonization. In response, we held three successful events in 2017 thanks to the generous donations of you, our alumni, and KA National.

April 20, 2017 - Brother J. McDowell “Mac” Platt ’76 hosted our first event at Druid Hills Golf Club attended by over

50 undergraduates, alumni, and KA national representatives. Twenty-eight alumni attended and/or contributed to the event.

August 25, 217 - Epsilon alumni hosted a barbecue cookout at the Campus Life Pavilion (next to the Emory baseball field) for 34 alumni and undergraduates.

October 27, 2017 - Epsilon alumni hosted an outing at Top Golf Atlanta for 17 undergraduates and three alumni.

2017 Recruitment Efforts a Success

Epsilon of Kappa Alpha Order Mansion Update

Since our departure, the Epsilon of Kappa Alpha Order Mansion has housed a theme group called “Media, Literature, and Arts Outreach,” or “Arts and Crafts” as the students call it for brevity. Kappa Alpha Order (KA) will return to the mansion at 14 Eagle Row in the fall of 2019, according to Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Director of the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Marlon Gibson. In the meantime, a number of improvements have been made to the facility, including a new chiller and repairs to the emergency exit. Epsilon wishes to thank our alumni who have dutifully continued to make donations to Emory University earmarked for the KA Building Fund in spite of our absence from the facility these last few years. Construction on the Epsilon house on

December 29, 2017.

Letter from the PresidentEpsilon Chapter Alumni,

My name is Connor Cione. I am a junior majoring in history and political science, and will be attending the Marine Corps’ Officer Candidates School this summer with the goal of commissioning as a second lieutenant after I graduate. My current objectives for the chapter: recruit 45 new members by fall 2018, have the Epsilon Chapter rechartered by January 2019, and completely fill 14 Eagle Row for our return in fall 2019.

The chapter has received significant assistance from the Kappa Alpha National Office, including visits from executive board members and the permanent placement of an associate director for chapter development, Carl Schumpert, in Atlanta. Carl has gone to great lengths to aid in the chapter’s recolonization by hosting dinner interviews with potential new members, facilitating with Emory administration, and training the new officers in the maintenance of the chapter. Consequently, through Carl’s and other members’ hard work, we inducted 31 new members on March 23. In its first official recruitment in spring 2018, the Epsilon Chapter established a solid foundation on which to build off.

The chapter also appointed its executive board for the year. Officers have received training through Kappa Alpha Order programs such as the National Leadership Institute as well as direct training from Carl Schumpert. Bylaws were passed in February. New member education has begun after induction with the chapter studying the Varlet and other materials facilitated by the Number II. Events such as Top Golf on March 24, paintball on April 14, and others have ensured that the new members’ bonds continue to grow. We’ve also had opportunities to reaffiliate the chapter with the Emory Greek community through hosted social events.

The chapter looks forward to its planned rechartering next school year and is grateful for the extensive support from the Epsilon alumni and the national office. Fraternally,Connor Cione ’19

Emory Greek Life Task ForceThe Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha

Order would like to thank all of our alumni for their participation in the Emory Greek Life Task Force, which started in the fall of 2015 and continues to this day. The charge of the task force is to “examine and assess the current Greek life landscape on campus and make recommendations on improving Greek life to the university’s Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life.” We are expecting a final report later this spring. The Greek life town hall for April was scheduled for the evening of April 9. If you’re not aware, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life is now offering regular town halls to improve communication and transparency. The April town hall included an update from the Greek life review process.

Below is a partial list of brothers who have contributed to this discussion: Travis W. Blalock, M.D. ’03 Malcolm R. Bruni ’92 Phil Byrum ’95 James David Carico ’87 C. Edward Cloaninger III ’93 James Warren Edlen ’09 Joshua F. Frankel ’94 John Krister Holladay ’90
