INTERNATIONAL PROJECT PROPOSALPROJECT 1629

Kachere Water for Life— Chipata, Zambia —

“But whoever drinks of the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14

We are a ministrythat mobilizes the global Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the

glory of Jesus Christ.

Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving

the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries

allows us to support the Church’s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities.

We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its

intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry

low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards

by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach.

We invite you to join with us as we seek to transform the lives of the poor materially and spiritually — ways that

please the Father and glorify Him in Heaven and on earth.

Project Synopsis

DescriptionThis project will install hand-pump wells in four remote rural villages. It will also provide education regarding health and hygiene, and distribute Bibles in the local language.

PurposeTo prevent waterborne diseases such as dysentery and typhoid and quench the painful thirst of families in desperate need.

Our PartnersSince 2012, Kachere Development Program has worked to empower vulnerable populations, especially women and children. Its leaders work hand in hand with the communities they serve, working to address needs for clean water, proper sanitation, nutrition, environmental conservation, agricultural improvements and protection for orphans.

LocationFour villages located within Zambia’s Chipata District: Pasilani, Chipungo, Mafemula and Tapila.

Cost$31,326 will install four hand-pump wells, directly benefiting about 2,400 people. It will also provide V-WASH training for 80 appointed committee members and distribute 150 Bibles in the local dialect.

Highlights• Only 51 percent of Zambia’s rural population has access to

safe, clean drinking water. This is far beneath the level of access in urban communities, where about 85 percent of the population has potable water.

• Poor families often spend hours filling their buckets with contaminated water from shallow ground holes and trickling streams. For them, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal issues are part of everyday life. These ailments are painful and can be life threatening — especially for children who are already undernourished.

• Women and young girls are often responsible for collecting water for their households, sometimes walking extremely long distances. This prevents many of them from attending school and can even leave them vulnerable to assault when they must collect water in the evening.

• Kachere Development Program was founded in 2012 by Anglican Diocese of Eastern Zambia. Today, the program emphasizes an interdenominational effort to serve the poor by providing humanitarian aid and proclaiming the Gospel.

• V-WASH committees will receive training to ensure preservation of the wells and promote healthy activities such as handwashing and proper sanitation. Committee members will help to disseminate vital health and hygiene information within their communities.

The Need

Women in Zambia make long, arduous treks to collect water, often walking barefoot for miles only to find that putrid, murky pools of groundwater or narrow streams are the only sources available to them. Some are very young; others are elderly. Some are mothers with babies strapped to their backs. For all, the burden of carrying heavy water containers is challenging, partly because water collection is often done in pre-dawn hours or in the evening.

The women travel at these odd hours to secure a place in line, but by traveling in the dark, they also risk the possibility of assault, rape and poisonous snakebites.

Why walk so far? Why take such risks? This is the fate of the poor. They have no other options.

They also collect the water even though they know it may sicken their entire household. Most open sources of water in Zambia are contaminated with dirt, frogs, mosquito larvae, waterborne parasites and animal waste. These are the same shallow wells local dogs and cattle use, so the families who draw water there risk their lives with every sip. When chronic diarrhea and stabbing intestinal pain strike, children frequently miss school with the illnesses, and tragically, many have died. The malnourished are particularly vulnerable. Vomiting and diarrhea sap those children of what little strength they have left.

Despite knowing all this, women in Zambia continue to rise before dawn for the long walk to collect water. Their families must drink something. And on and on it goes — this endless cycle of drudgery, fear, sickness and sorrow.

But there is an answer to this problem. We can break the unending pattern of dehydration and disease. The solution lies right beneath the ground the women tread each day. Under the surface of the earth, it is possible to tap a new source of clean, safe water — good for drinking and free from harm.

These poor women cannot reach that source alone. But with your help, fresh water can flow!

Health Facts for Zambia

• Nearly half of the rural population lives without access to clean drinking water.

• Child stunting is shockingly high (around 40 percent) due, in part, to malnourishment and a lack of proper sanitation.

• Life expectancy is low, and less than 3 percent of the population lives past 55 years of age.

• Diarrheal diseases remain one of the leading causes of death for children under 5.

Poor villagers in this region often collect water from sources that are full of frogs and dirt.

Ministry Description

It can be easy for families living in remote Zambian communities to feel forgotten by the rest of the world — and sometimes even by God. Understanding this, the Church has worked hard to address the needs of isolated villages and found ways to bring in help and hope.

One such outreach, founded in 2012 by the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Zambia, is called the Kachere Development Program (KDP). Today, it is led by an interdenominational network of Christians who are committed to serving the poor in Christ’s name. Some of these faithful servants even grew up in the same villages that KDP now serves.

The president of the board, Bishop William Chombo, is especially knowledgeable about the struggles the poor families face. He visits them regularly, stays in their homes and drinks the same water they drink.

Over the past two years, Cross International has partnered with KDP to complete 27 lifesaving wells in villages all over Chipata. Each time, KDP has worked effectively to bring crystal-clear water to those who have been exhausted and in pain for too long. By drilling boreholes deep into the earth (164 feet or more) and having the water tested, KDP ensures that the new water supply will be both abundant and safe.

Your generosity will provide borehole wells for four remote villages, directly quenching the thirst of 2,400 people who do not have access to clean water. It will also provide V-WASH training sessions for 80 committee members, who will be responsible for training others within their communities. This training provides vital information regarding hygiene and sanitation, which will help the villagers preserve the wells, protect their health and potentially prolong their lives.

With your help, we can provide families with another important gift as well — 150 Bibles in their own language! The villages served by this project are largely inhabited by the Chewa and Ngoni tribes. Most of the families identify as Christians — but some have never had access to a Bible of their own. Your gift will give endless encouragement, comfort and strength to poor believers when you place the Word of God in their hands.

KDP is ready to save lives and refresh souls in Eastern Zambia. All it takes is a “yes” from you.

Our Promise to You!Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred through June 30, 2019, the close of our ministry’s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project,

the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.

Help Now!

It’s very moving to see families celebrate the wonderful moment when clean water finally flows in their villages. These poor people toil day after day, nauseous and dehydrated in the blistering sun. You can imagine the wave of relief they feel when that terrible burden is literally washed away.

This is your opportunity to give that incredible gift of life and hope to impoverished families in Zambia.

Your compassionate response to this project will benefit everyone, but village women and girls who spend hours each day collecting murky water for their families will be blessed most. Exhausted and afraid of what the future will bring, they have been willing to put their lives at risk to find and collect water for their families. By supporting Cross and empowering the work of the Kachere Development Program, you will put an end to those daily trials! You will save these girls and women hours each day, allowing them to either complete their education or invest their time in work that can pull their families out of poverty.

Please – help us answer the prayers of thousands, and wash away the tears of the poor by supplying needy communities in Zambia with the gift of clean water. It will bless their lives and restore their spirits!

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use,

it will be measured to you.Luke 6:38
