Kumu Hula - Ehulani Stephany

Kumu Hula - Ehulani Stephany

Ehulani has studied hula, and chanting, under 14 different kumu hula (hula teachers) in the Hawaiian Islands, as Uncle George Na'ope, Pekelo Day, Kaha'i Topolinski and Roselle Bailey. Ehulani's halau serve as the annual Royal Court Dancers for the Royal Court of Pu'uhonua 'O Honaunau ("Place of Refuge"), every summer, and almost every year she visits Maui for the World Hula Conference (at which Ehulani was asked to be an instructor, both in 2001 and 2005).

On film and video, Ehulani and her halau have been seen around the world. They were featured, for instance, in a CNN News special about the volcano Goddess Pele, Kilauea volcano, and the sacredness of the Hula Kahiko (Ancient Hula) -- and, most recently, they have worked with a film crew from Japan, making a feature-length documentary on the nature and people of Hawaii.

The mission of their halau is to express the sacredness of life through the poetry of hula, ashula is a spiritual path. A path to the core truth of ourselves. As we deepen this awareness of our place in the cosmos it is reflected in our voices & bodies.

Hula Implements Workshop Hula Implements Workshop Na Kani O Hula has been doing demonstrations and teaching classes and workshops on the making of various hula instruments since 1995. Gayle and Kent are honored for the opportunity to provide hula dancers throughout Hawai’i and worldwide with their hula implements.  Both take pride in their work and strive to maintain their reputation for quality products. Gayle’s background in agriculture led to the birth of Na Kani O Hula through her successful methods of farming ipu in Kula, Maui. Her many years as a hula dancer also gives her an understanding of how each instrument will be used.

Kent’s main focus is his work on ipuheke and pu’ili.  These instruments are made painstakingly yet each one is made with aloha.  His ipu heke are highly sought after because they are created to be played comfortably as well as being pleasing to the eye and most especially to the ear.
