Emergency services at Tinopai have taken a step up with the volunteer fire brigade taking delivery of a new three-seater fire engine.

The vehicle was handed over by Forest Protection Services through the Kaipara District Council and it carries a much larger volume of water and storage for emergency equipment, compared with the brigade’s former transport, which has been retired.

The handover ceremony included a performance by local school pupils and a blessing from kaumatua Gabriel Thompson.

“We are so pleased with the new truck. It means the world to us. It enables faster responses and allows us

to have all our equipment in one spot making the job easier for the crew,” said acting chief Allan Crabb.

“We often arrive at medical scenes before the ambulance crew arrive on site and we do extensive medical treatment. The old truck didn’t have the space to carry the equipment and we towed a trailer which slowed us down.

“The brigade now has 19 volunteer members who have just completed extensive exams with all the crew passing. We look after our community and they look after us. We are a go

ahead area and are excited about the plans for the future.”

These plans include the establishment of a Tinopai Emergency Services Centre, which will house the local branch of the North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard and the fire party.

The community is now fundraising for this as well as a seven-seater van so volunteer crew can travel together to call outs instead of cars as at present.

p Eight contestants battled it out as they competed for the title of grand finalist at the ANZ Young Farmer Contest regional finals held in Dargaville. Douglas McGregor, pictured holding the cup, was the last grand finalist to be named before the final contest in Taupo. Competitors were tested on a range of farming skills including practical, theory and business.

p Aranga school pupils saw red with teachers Richard Amoroa, Sonja King and volunteer assistant Claire Simmonds on their annual wacky hair day. With a roll of 35 students they put in a great effort and raised $69.50 for the Red Chopper appeal. The best junior effort was won by Jessica Simmonds, in her Snow White dress and red hair, and senior student Tayne Dibben won with her red striped t-shirt and red leggings.

p Dargaville RSA president John McLean accepts a cheque from the Kaipara Lifestyler’s Kylie Tane and Andy Bryenton. This generous donation is thanks to the annual Anzac Day poppies edition of the paper, representing huge support for the RSA from our business community. “We are very grateful for this donation,” said Mr McLean. “We were really pleased with the Anzac services turnout and would like to thank the community for showing us their support and making the day such a success. This year’s attendance was exceptional.”

Dargaville couple Pauline and Simon Gough have returned from a road trip with a difference.

“I don’t count myself to be anything special, I just did what thousands of others had to do when the war happened.”

After impressing Tour of New Zealand Cycle Race director Peter Yarrell with her paintings displayed in the Commercial Hotel, Pauline was invited to be the official artist for the race.

She accompanied her husband Simon who participated in the eight day North Island event from Cape Reinga to Wellington. Cyclists also travelled up from Bluff in the South Island.

“It was full on,” Pauline said. “I spent a lot of my time driving getting from one destination to the next or painting.

“It was a little out of my comfort zone but I am quite a fast painter and like to get things down quickly.

“Even though I didn’t get to spend much time in each place, I got to see parts of New Zealand I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. It was a great experience for Simon as well, who up

until last year had little experience bike riding and finished third in the Master’s category.”

Simon started training in November last year, going for rides about two to three times a week.

“The tour was seven days of little victories and satisfaction from knowing you have completed each section,” he said. “We are very thankful for all the donations and generosity from our supporters.”

Simon hopes to tick off the South Island event in two years time.

Pauline’s artworks were auctioned off at the prize giving with the remaining art going on the Tour of New Zealand’s Facebook page for a silent auction which will close on May 15.

A simple view of conflict from 95-year-old Ron Nicholas, who served in World War II in Egypt and Italy at Cassino, and who attended the Dargaville Anzac ceremonies with his family, and granddaughter, army sergeant Terraine Hollis.

Terraine initially enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and has served in Sinai and Afghanistan, and travelled to Italy, Gallipoli, Fiji, Malaysia and England, in the course of her 14 years in uniform. She has recently transferred to the NZ Army Reserves in order to become a full-time student, after working in Headquarters NZ Defence Force.

“She was chosen to do the Catafalque duty at the cenotaph for the 60th commemoration of Cassino which was an amazing honour,” said Mr Nicholas.

“She has seen and done a lot, way more than we did and things have certainly changed since we went to war.”

This is the third Anzac Day they have spent together.

“I feel that being in the military connects us in a very special way. The

sense of pride I feel even standing alongside my grandfather in uniform is very hard to express in words. I appreciate these moments and I value these memories so much,” said Terraine.

At 21, Mr Nicholas was enlisted and served in the New Zealand tank recovery section, rescuing damaged battle units with crawler tractors and transporters.

“The quicker you could do the job the better,” he recalls. “Often the work had to be done at night so you wouldn’t get caught and at times you had to be very quiet. We would let artillery off in a different direction to occupy the enemy while we got the job done.”

He recalls a time when they were getting fired at and he tried to jump into a tank for shelter. Others beat him to it so he had to slide under one.

The shells were getting closer and closer until finally he said “Oh God, this one is close please make it go away.” It didn’t go away but landed right beside him, without exploding.

“I guess I am one of the lucky ones.” ¢

New netball initiativeNetball New Zealand is joining forces with ANZ to launch a new initiative ANZ futureFERNS, a nationally recognised junior netball programme, which is growing in leaps and bounds all over the country and will soon be offered in Ruawai and Dargaville by the Northern Wairoa Netball centre.

ANZ futureFERNS has created a programme for Year 1–8 children with a modified game of netball, which takes into account the specific needs and abilities of children in this age bracket. The programme sees players progress through the modified versions of the game which develops their physical and mental skills.

New Zealand Netball chief executive Hilary Poole says ANZ’s support of the futureFERNS programme has been greatly appreciated.

“We want our children to get the best possible introduction to netball and encourage them to aim high. ANZ futureFERNS is designed to be great

to participate in, great to contribute to, great to follow and great to enjoy as a spectacle,” she said.

“The main aim for children is to have fun while learning basic netball skills like passing, catching and pivoting. As the kids grow, the game grows which is fantastic.”

ANZ’s Head of Sponsorship and Corporate Marketing, Susan McGregor said ANZ is happy to continue netballs advancement by providing a pathway through grassroots participation to help young netballers achieve.

A taste of historyIt was a full house at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex for the annual Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary fundraising address, with an historic Maori battle echoing memories of Anzac conflicts that were making headlines around the country.

Historian Roi McCabe spoke of the significant battle that took place at Kaiwaka in 1825, and of the importance of being able to discuss battles to honour those that have gone before.

The battle is commemorated in a monument on the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai road to mark where the Ngapuhi rangatira Hongi Hika, and warriors armed with muskets, came by waka to Mangawhai, beginning a campaign

against Ngati Whatua, the people of the Kaipara. Rotary is offering prize money for students under 20 for an essay competition on the battle. The competition closes on June 20, with up to six prizes of $500 each.

Otamatea High School, Point Curtis Boating Club, Otamatea Marae, and the Kaipara Sports Complex benefited from Rotary trust fund awards of $1,200 each, that were announced at the evening event. ¢

It has taken several years to complete but the five year switch replacement project is now finished.

It is the most substantial project in recent years and will be hugely beneficial for reliability of electricity supply in Kaipara and Whangarei.

Throughout the Kaipara and Whangarei Districts, approximately 800 air break switches have been replaced on the entire 11kV overhead network. In most cases these switches were replaced with enclosed switches while some were replaced by links. There are currently 654 enclosed switches on the 11kV network.

Around 20% of these switches have been identified as highly desirable to remotely control and were installed with a motor unit. Over the next few years we will be fitting the communication equipment to these switches to enable remote control.

The purpose of the project was to replace all air break switches on the Northpower network as this type of switch had reliability issues and was high maintenance. In addition to addressing the issue of the air break switch, the enclosed switch selected by Northpower has higher capacity and has a remote control option.

Remote control allows Northpower to quickly isolate fault sections of line and therefore restore supply to the un-faulted sections significantly faster. This means our fault staff can concentrate on finding and fixing the fault in the isolated section of line.

The rural nature of the network means that a significant amount of time is spent by field staff traveling to operate switches manually. In most cases, the switch replacements were done using live lines techniques so that the power supply was not interrupted. The ability to install the enclosed switch live line was a factor when selecting which type of enclosed switch to use.

So next time you’re taking a walk, look up, you’ll probably notice them. They look like a silver metal box at the top of the poles. The remotely controlled switches have a silver box control about half way up the pole with a radio antenna mounted on the control box.

Redhill gets fresh soilu by Ann Morgan

The Redhill Cemetery upgrade is another step closer to completion, thanks to various trucking firms and drivers volunteering their services to cart 320 cubic metres of soil to the site.

“I approached the businesses for help and they generously gave their time and equipment to get this project done, at no charge,” said Des Subritzky.

“The drivers worked hard. They were all busy but took time out of their schedules, along with Derek Morgan who loaded the soil donated by Grant and Christine Fredrickson from Te Kopuru.

“The people in the district have shown marvellous support, their willingness and generosity in all areas has been extremely appreciated.

“We are now placing the soil and filling any areas that need it ready to plant the grass. If anyone would like to help at any time they are welcome to call me to see what we have happening.”

Horse whispereru by Ayla Miller

Local equestrienne Tori Murray-Elley returned home from the United States after working as a junior two-star Parelli instructor.

She is now teaching her own students the principles of natural horsemanship and a range of other training methods, on her Dargaville property. Natural Parelli Horsemanship is the study of horse psychology and consists of a variety of gentle techniques, focussing on communication.

After studying at The Parelli Centre in Colorado and working overseas, she is qualified to teach these practices to her own students, ranging from beginners to competitive riders aged from three to 75-years-old.

Inspired by the results she witnessed with a difficult pony, she decided to give natural horsemanship a go, with outstanding results.

“I compete in dressage competitions and I never saw anyone in these events use these techniques but when I tried them, I saw an incredible change in my horses personality. My difficult pony turned into one of my most reliable ones,” she says.

“As horses are prey animals and humans are predators, they think very

differently. We are more predator in our thinking. For us to get along takes a bit of understanding on both parts. For any good partnership there needs to be good communication.”

She can work between 70 to 80 hours a week but says it doesn’t feel like a job.

“I never wake up thinking I don’t want to do this anymore. I find it rewarding to see the changes in horses and their riders.” ¢

Gallery gets a refreshu by Ayla Miller

The White Rock Gallery in Paparoa is now displaying a completely new collection crafted by local artists.

“This is our second refresh and our third rotation of art,” says gallery secretary, Jillaine Murray.

“This time around we have found the artists are offering a different variety of their own work. They have been trying new things and this has meant we have ended up with a lovely cross section of artists’ crafts.”

The gallery has approximately 30 contributing artists. “We do a complete refresh where anything that hasn’t sold gets returned and replaced with new items.”

To display work at the White Rock Gallery artists must live in the Kaipara District as defined by the council or

have strong ties to the area. “We have several lots of really different jewellery including tribal and traditional designs at the moment. There is a wide range of paintings, abstract through to more traditional landscapes, beautiful textiles and quilts. There are a number of artists working with vintage fabrics, upcycling them and pairing them with contemporary materials.

“There is something for everyone and items range from $4 to $850. There are lots of beautiful pieces at good prices. We get a lot of people coming in for gifts or cards. As it changes regularly, if there isn’t something you like now there might be something next time.” ¢

Karate champ brings home goldu by Ayla Miller

Dargaville based karate champion, Shane Tregidga, has had a successful time at the Australian and New Zealand Open Championships winning a silver medal and two golds.

Following his silver win in the open men’s weight category in Australia he went on to win gold at the New Zealand Open Championships for his weight division in the kumite category and another in the open weight division, representing his Miyagi Kan club based in Whangarei.

He says he couldn’t have done it without the support he received from family, friends, businesses and the community.

“My family has always been there for me, and are understanding of my busy training schedule.

“So many people have helped me out by selling raffle tickets from their businesses, organising events and or offering private donations. Thank you all very much.”

Shane has been practising karate since he was nine years old and has won the last three national competitions and the last two New Zealand open competitions. He is the under 84 kilogram champion for two consecutive years, making him the defending male senior champion of New Zealand.

p Shane Tregidga with his two gold medals from the NZ Open Championships and the silver he won in Australia

In mid July he will be travelling to Turkey, to train and compete with the Turkish national team before competing at the 2015 European Open in Germany in September.

He is looking to compete in the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia and the Senior Worlds in Austria in 2016.

He has recently graduated as an architect and has returned home to concentrate on karate before he begins his career. ¢

Cool air and small appliance servicingu by Ann Morgan

Supplying, maintaining and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning units are just part of the service Supercool Refrigeration provide.

Sanjay Kumar introduced Amitesh Lal to such competitive prices for his own equipment, he suggested there was a good opportunity to provide savings for others and they started the new business on January the first this year.

Sanjay had been commuting from Auckland to work in Northland. Originally from a small village, he found the big city too busy and stressful, so the move to Dargaville was a welcome opportunity.

Amitesh manages the company and is the salesman, while Sanjay is

the service technician with more than 20 years experience in the trade. Whether they are installing or repairing a farm cool room or a heat pump domestically, helping people is what they enjoy doing, knowing their prices are financially viable.

“The people here are so friendly,” says Sanjay. “You can interact with them on the street and they smile back at you, it is so nice to live in a welcoming community. We love living in the Kaipara.”

p Sanjay is looking forward to meeting new clients

Their client base ranges from small and large commercial businesses, farmers and domestic clients, in the Kaipara and surrounding areas.

Sanjay says it is not necessary to pay the highest price for an item, you often get the same result from a lower priced product.

“We are in the process of expanding and will be hiring two local staff because we believe in keeping our community in employment. We will be needing an office person and someone to train as

a technician as the company has grown quickly,” says Sanjay.

“We are looking forward meeting with people and showing them our range of product, our main heat pumps are Mitsubishi and Gree.”

Sanjay can be contacted on 021 0843 4699, 09 945 5298 or by email [email protected].

They deal in refrigeration, air conditioners and heat pumps and also fix small home appliances like washing machines and freezers. ¢

Rural WinterPush for water purityu by Andy Bryenton

As the 2014/15 season draws to a close for dairy farmers, those who are part of the huge Fonterra cooperative will be looking to issues of water purity on their farms.

A guideline of the end of the season has been set for those farmers working under what is known as ‘temporary water exclusion’ — indicating that impurities have been detected in the ‘raw’ water sourced for farm use. The exclusion is temporary, because in many cases only a small amount of work needs to be done to meet the requirements and resume normal flow.

Fonterra routinely check the water supply of their contributing dairy farms for impurities such as E coli and sediment.

Water sources ranging from dams to bores to wells and streams are tested, and those which fail, or need additional purification or filtration are marked for the temporary exclusion schedule, leading to more stringent testing procedures and the necessity to treat water with purifying agents before such activities as flushing the plant at the start of milking.

As of the start of the season, that number may have been as high as one in five Fonterra suppliers — but this number has dropped dramatically as the season has progressed. The emphasis behind the push for cleaner water in dairy operations is quality control, and it falls in line with the Ministry of Primary Industries’ goal of guaranteeing top-flight exports. While temporary water exclusion does not pose a risk to milk

investment must be on target andcost effective.

quality, it does mean extra work for affected farmers, who are encouraged to put permanent — often automatic — systems in place to ensure compliant water all year round.

The solution may be as simple as draining and cleaning water storage tanks. In areas with poor groundwater, the collection of rainwater has been put forward as a solution.

For those using bore water or collecting from natural streams, automatic dosing equipment to release purification agents, ultraviolet light treatment or even the use of ozone generators may be the answer. In this season especially, the cost of infrastructural

Press headlines that Fonterra is facing a supplier crisis of confidence and risks haemorrhaging milk to private companies as fed-up farmer shareholders react to its latest financial results, deserves some comment.

‘Six Principles of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business’

Loyalty can be fickle amongst farmers when they are hit directly in their financial pockets and facing a financial slump caused by low dairy returns worldwide.

New Zealand has an increasing number of proprietary dairy companies and also the Chinese are undertaking major investments in dairy processing here, in competition to Fonterra.

At a Fonterra meeting I attended in Northland, Fonterra representatives confirmed they were negotiating to supply milk to the Chinese milk factory at Pokeno and that there was nothing to stop the Chinese from building more of these plants throughout the country.

If Fonterra is required to supply these establishing companies with milk under the current legislation for a three year period, it will certainly I believe, alarm Fonterra suppliers who see competitors

using Fonterra milk to establish their businesses and then competing for Fonterra suppliers.

I believe the current legislation should be changed and these competitors should be made to stand alone from the beginning.

There are strong indications that Chinese interests are planning to buy a significant number of farms throughout Northland and elsewhere and that these farms will supply processing plants financed and built by the Chinese.

Open Country, New Zealand’s second largest milk processor, an independently owned company, is looking at the options of building a milk plant at their Affco Horotiu plant or expanding its Whareroa site. It is claimed over 500 Fonterra milk suppliers are waiting to join their company, due to their

extreme dissatisfaction with Fonterra’s payout performance.

The Chinese have been traders for thousands of years. The famous Chinese military tactician Sun Tzu in 512BC wrote a book called The Art of War. The theories of his book are still widely read throughout the world today.

Many Chinese businesses and others throughout the world follow the six major principles of Sun Tzu, being capture your market without destroying it, avoid your competitors strength and attack

their weakness, use foreknowledge and deception to maximise the power of business intelligence, use speed and preparation to swiftly overcome the competition, use alliances and strategic control points in the industry to ‘shape’ your opponents and make them conform to your will, develop your character as a leader to maximise the potential of your employees.

Clearly they are a tenacious people. They never give up. We would do well to learn from them if we are going to survive in a free-market open economy that invites overseas investment.

It is up to us to make sure that we don’t become slaves in our own country. We must retain 100% control from the farm gate to the worlds markets ¢

Thank You Notices

Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club recently hosted the Bayley’s Northland Dog Trial Championships in conjunction with its annual trials.

The Judges travelled from Wairoa and Dannevirke for 3 days of competition culminating on Sunday where the champion sheep dogs of Northland, in each of the four events, were found.

It was a very successful trial made possible by the great team of helpers who kept the sheep on the mark, saw everyone well fed throughout and the great sponsors.

The Club would like to extend a huge ‘Thank You’ to the Course sponsors, Farmlands, Wairere King, PGG Wrightson and Jim Leslie. Our grateful thanks to the landowners, B & J Paton and to Robert Lynds and to the J. Hargreaves family for loaning us your sheep. We are also indebted to the following for sponsorship and help:

AFFCO, Ballance Agrinutrients, Bayleys, Direct Animal Health, Greenlea, A & L Hargreaves, Hawken Family Trust, R & D Hastie, McLennan Groundspread, S & J McRae, Manukau Wools, Marty Brown Weedspraying, Neville Bros, Otamatea Dog Trial Club, PGG Wrightson (Wellsford), Pete Thompson and Blue Vallance, Poland Motors Ltd, Rabobank, Ravensdown, The Vet Centre (Maungaturoto), the Timekeeper, sheep liberators, kitchen workers and bakers, BBQ cooks, Course Stewards, smoko deliverers, Judges and competitors, the general ‘runners’ who kept things going smoothly and to everyone else who contributed to the success of this event.
