The extended community approach replaces a former Kaipara District Council policy of employing outside consultants to determine policy, according to stakeholders in the project.

A steering group involving the Mangawhai Club, the new museum and the golf club, among others concerned, was formed to determine a vision for the area which encompasses the Mangawhai Activity Zone.

“I’d like to mention the level of co-operation we’ve had from the district council. Other groups with an interest in the park include the local arts association and Mangawhai Tracks Trust, which is associated with the Mangawhai Walking Weekend organisation.

“The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association is also very supportive of the community consultations,” Mr Stott added.

For Cynthia Shirtcliffe’s 80th birthday her daughters bought her something ‘very special’, a scenic fl ight across the Kaipara. She shared the experience with (from left) her granddaughter Tara Mitchell, and children Marian Morris, (Cynthia Shirtcliffe in centre), Robyn Mitchell and Michael Mitchell. The group departed from Dargaville airfi eld and fl ew over Kai Iwi Lakes, Maunganui Bluff, continued along the beach then circled back to the airfi eld taking a total of half an hour. Cynthia said that it was ‘very enjoyable’ and a great way to see Kaipara from a different perspective.

Gold Star awarded

The ceremony was attended by around 150 people including fi re service dignitaries UFBA past president, Lex Calder, Area Manager Kaipara/Whangarei, Mike Lister, along with Kaipara District Council Commissioner, Richard Booth and brigade life members, brigade members and partners.

On behalf of the Dargaville Fire Brigade, Chief Fire Offi cer, Jeff Palmer presented the Gold Star to Peter and a bouquet of fl owers was presented to Pat Ward.

“Peter worked in the Helensville Dairy Company and when it closed in 1988 he transferred to Dargaville where he joined as a fi re fi ghter. He was employed at Morse Mitre 10 where he became manager in 1990,” said Mr Palmer.

“Because of his new managerial responsibilities Peter was unable to attend calls as a fi re fi ghter so transferred to the then fi re police unit becoming Station Offi cer after Doug Snook’s untimely death.”

Mr Palmer thanked Peter for his dedication to the Kaipara district along with his commitment to the wider

Long service and good conduct medals were also awarded to DCFO Michael Ross and SO Hamish Watson who both served 14 years.

“Every year the calibre of entries has been improving — small businesses have to think about how they operate, not just what they do, and large businesses have to understand the dynamics in which they run their business,” says Northland Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Tony Collins.

Dargaville Arts Association entered the creative arts category while Northpine and Silver Fern Farms compete for the title of best large business, while Wai Hou Oma lodge and Wainui Shuttles have entered the owner operated category for small businesses.

Judges for the creative arts section, Christopher Carey and Irene Durham, met with the Dargaville Arts Association recently to help with marketing and promoting.

“Entrants have such courage and ambition to put themselves forward and get their name out there and for them to say ‘here I am’ is really great,” says Mr Carey.

Around eight years ago, owners of the Wai Hou Oma lodge, Ruby and Noel Martin entered the awards under the ‘new business’ category and Ruby said that it was helpful to gain exposure for their luxury accommodation near Kai Iwi Lakes.

“All us west coasters just want to be recognised more, because it’s so beautiful and it’s not really known about — people are blown away when they come here.”

Although she would love to win, entering the awards has already been benefi cial as businesses have to fi ll in around 30 pages of paper work in order to be nominated.

“It made me more aware of what my goals were and what I want to do for the business,” says Ruby

Silver Fern Farms took away the award for ‘large business’ last year and Dargaville manager, Dean McNaught, is looking forward to this year’s presentation.

“It’s a great measure for us to see how we stack up against other businesses in the region and it’s a fantastic event to be involved with.”

A panel of around 10 judges will look for great execution of good business ideas as well as future goals among other criteria specifi c for each category. To purchase a ticket to the gala dinner visit: http://northlandbusinessawards.co.nz/gala-dinner

The Mangawhai community objected to paying far too much for sewage removal. They never wanted the system forced on them, but they had a right to expect it to be managed properly when it was. It was a shambles, and still is. To cover their screw-ups Council tried to increase Mangawhai rates by a huge amount (more than 100% in many cases).

People reacted — they marched and they objected in writing, and they stopped paying their rates.

What did YOUR council do? Please read carefully.

They secretly backed off, and they secretly turned the guns on YOU. Then what did they do? With the minister’s help, they went into hiding. Are you angry about that? Would you like to give them a piece of your mind? You can’t blame the new gang in charge, because THEY didn’t jack up your rates, the elected council did, on August 29, and then they skipped town.

Are you going to take that? Are you going to pay for illegally established debt to fund things that don’t benefit YOU at all? To fund McKerchar’s illegal redundancy package? To fund all the other screw-ups?

The new rates demands are illegal — The Department of Internal Affairs publicly said so on 29 August, and their CEO has subsequently supported that position in writing. Even if you can pay these rates, should you?

You can go on trusting and being obedient, or you can call a halt. By courageously standing up to all this illegality and irresponsibility, the Mangawhai ratepayers got a very temporary reduction in their rates increases, at YOUR EXPENSE. Mangawhai didn’t do that to you, the council did. We have to unite to deal with this. NOBODY is looking after the ratepayers’ interests.

Are you OK with your increase? If you do nothing now, you are deemed to be. Your rates have risen by maybe 30%! Do nothing and it’ll happen again and again. Alternatively, stop paying rates, march in the streets, and OBJECT, until accountability comes back to Kaipara. Democracy is very poorly but it is not yet dead — its survival is in your hands.

She will complete her practical semester with Kumarani and after she graduates she wants to specialise in circus social work.

“The circus gives people fun things to do and gives confi dence. If someone learns how to juggle then they can feel really positive about it.”

She also says that it involves everyone and teaches trust.

“If you are building a human pyramid then everyone relies on each other, the top person has to rely on the people beneath them for support.”

She has been involved with the circus since she was a girl, and last year she taught hula hoop and acrobatics at a circus in Germany.

it has been feeling the pinch.“There is less funding available

lately and more people applying for it. We often perform free at events, but we still need to pay for equipment, insurance, rent, power and travelling expenses,” says Circus Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai.

Grazing Support Block Or Investment

Fish of between fi ve and 10 kilos have been not uncommon, and that has been inside the harbour proper, and not out at the Graveyard.

For some, it has posed a dilemma. What in fact is a good eating fi sh, and should the big ones be landed at all?

For a keen fi sherman, its often the attraction of showing off a trophy fi sh, and the bigger snapper probably will fi nd its way into the smokehouse, rather than fi llets for the table.

But there is a curlier question. The future of our fi sh stocks.

Kaipara angler, Gary ‘Gravy’ Greaves,

has decided to catch and release if the snapper is just too big for the table.

“I have caught my big fi sh, and now I prefer to release them when they are brought alongside. These are valuable breeding stock, and there are plenty of pan-sized fi sh out there that are better eating.”

It is an attitude that is echoed in research which estimates that large females may spawn up to 60 times in a season, which can last up to three-and-a-half months. Add to that the fact that a hen snapper can be home to literally millions of eggs at any one time. That is

Letting the big one goReports from fi shers around the Kaipara Harbour over the past fortnight have been highlighted by the size of some of the snapper being caught

a lot of future stock chances destoyed when the fi sh is fi lling a chilly bin on board.

It is also interesting to note that once snapper larvae hatch they tend to hang around in much the same stretch of water. They emerge from their transparent eggs spawned in the hundreds of thousands by a single hen at any one time.

After the egg ‘yolk’ is exhausted the fl edgling fi sh dines on plankton before moving to seek sustenance on the harbour fl oor. As the fi sh grows, it moves gradually into bays, estuaries and shallower waters when it reaches about one centimetre in length, and if they survive predation, feed and grow.

In about 30 years, they might make it to ‘mum’s’ size and the process goes on.

As we know, NIWA scientists have discovered that nearly all snapper on the west coast of the North Island come from nurseries in the Kaipara.

“These fi ndings show how fragile some New Zealand snapper and other coastal fi sh stocks could be. It highlights the importance of protecting natural habitats, like Kaipara Harbour,” NIWA ecologist, Dr Mark Morrison, has stated.

“Any negative impacts on the production of juvenile fi sh in the harbour will cascade through into a much larger coastal ecosystem, ultimately having a huge effect on the abundance of fi sh over a 700-kilometre coastline.”

Kaipara Harbour is under threat from human activities — particularly land uses which cause sedimentation, eutrophication, and changes in water quality. These effects can all damage the nursery habitat of snapper.

But, while work goes on to try and improve Kaipara Harbour water quality, there’s a clear signal that fi shers too can help safeguard the future — with a catch and release policy for those big ‘nodders’ out there.

A group of six producers will be tempting the over 24,000 visitors over four days at the “Mangawhai to Bayleys — Coast to Coast Kaipara” stand.

Heralded as New Zealand’s most glamorous food festival, it celebrates the start of summer boasting signature dishes from Auckland’s finest restaurants.

“It’s wonderful to be able to promote boutique food and wine producers from a subtropical area right on Auckland’s doorstep and there’s also the spin off effect of increased tourists,” says stand coordinator, Liz Holsted.

The participants are Lochiel Estate Wines, Millars Winery, Tara Lodge Tamarillos, Chapel Olive Oil, Purple Monkeyfinger Vodka, and the Long Flat Bacon Company.

“We are really looking forward to the event,” said Lochiel Estate Wines director, Gary Cameron, “it’s a very popular show and a great opportunity to showcase our wines.”

Owner of Chapel Olive Oil, Barry Baines said, “we’re very happy to be involved because we are keen to promote the region as well as boost sales.”

The director of the Long Flat Bacon Company, Graham Taylor, believes the show is an excellent chance to put their products in front of thousands of

Kaipara tastes showcased in Auckland

“It will be a very special open day with a number of new events as well as some milestones in the museums history,” said CEO Bet Nelley.

“Staff and museum friends and volunteers have been flat out getting exhibits ready and organising events that are sure to make it a day with a real difference as the museum comes alive.”

Central to the plans are the release of a new museum book, an appropriate 150 pages entitled Pioneering Life and the Kauri Tree.

Compiled by Sarah Charles, it is a combination history and diary with contemporary and archive photographs charting the history of the local area.

Early food preparation is also part of the day’s activities and visitors, with admission free, will be able to try their hand at butter-making, damper and bully tea, along with pioneer activities like rope-making and gum-polishing or even riding a horse side-saddle.

“All this to the beat of not only vintage machinery being started up, but also to a wide range of live music, including the Matakohe Eccentric Uke’s, a ukelele band with a lot of flair.”

Joining fees will be waived on the day, and family subscriptions to the ski club will come down to $100 for a one year membership.

“That gives you access to equipment – in the summer months there’s pretty much always someone there that can take you out.”

Each year the club competes in water-ski championships with the main one being a Kai Iwi Three Event Tournament in late January and the club coaches those that want to ski competitively.

“We’ve had some of our skiers represent New Zealand in

international competitions,” says Tim. Fifteen year old, Curtis Williams,

has been a member of the ski club ‘since he was a baby’ and recently competed in the Asian Australasian and Oceanian Waterski and Wakeboard Championship held in Korea.

“I did pretty well, I made the trick fi nal which means I’m in the top 12 for Australasia,” says Curtis who will be at the open day to inspire young skiers and in between skiing there will be a bouncy castle, lolly scrambles and a sausage sizzle.

All equipment will be provided including some wet suits. “All you have to do is show up with your togs and towel between 10am and 3pm,” says Tim.

Kai Iwi Lakes Ski Club is set to hold an open day on November 10 and committee member, Tim Robinson encourages families and the community to come along and “give it a go”

The awards dinner was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Auckland with 2122 entries from 13 different countries and a record 224 gold medals were awarded.

Vineyard owner, Ross Millar said it was “very cool” to see the Millar logo blown up when he received his medal.

“It was nice to go up on stage, and when I was walking away, they called me back, to say a few words about the syrah and make a speech.”

In previous awards Millars have received three bronze and a silver but nothing quite compares to gold says Ross and it put them into the running for the syrah championships.

“Crossroads syrah won the championships but we think we were a close second, we haven’t seen the points table yet.”

Clown Doctors are trained performers who entertain and distract sick kids and amuse and relax strained parents with their artistic skills, gags, tricks and improvisation talents, making the hospital environment a little bit less of a scary place to be.

Having spent almost 20 years in theatre as a performer, puppeteer, designer, prop maker and tutor — Jude’s medical clowning career began in 2009 when she heard a radio interview with the founder, Professor Thomas Petschner.

“I thought it was such fascinating work and a fi eld that I’d really like to be involved in,” says Jude.

After an intensive training course she was selected for the 10-clown team at Starship Hospital, Auckland and is now coordinator for the programme.

“When we fi rst started visiting the wards we were nervous and the nurses weren’t sure at fi rst where to put us. Now they’re used to us and it’s good for the staff as well.”

“It’s incredibly fulfi lling to make a

difference in an environment where both the children and parents are feeling so vulnerable. We perform in pairs and bounce off each other, we try to distract the children, to make them laugh.”

International research has proven that humour, smiling and laughing can reduce muscle tension, increase hormones produced naturally in the body and lead to anti-infl ammatory and stress-reducing effects.

Jude says the effect of humour is amazing and she sees fi rst-hand the results as they are called on to help patients feel more comfortable during unpleasant treatments.

“One experience I recall was with a child in the isolation ward. They said what the child was about to have ‘was not going to be pleasant’ so we got out our fi nger butterfl y puppets as a distraction and when the nurse performed the procedure the child didn’t even fl inch.

To leave the room with the child and parent smiling is the greatest reward you can ever reap.”

The pool will close an hour earlier each day than previous years and open four hours later on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the hydro/learn to swim pool opening one hour later during the week.

Community Leisure Management are contracted by the pool trust to operate the pool.

“The trust has asked CLM to reduce opening times based on historical data on pool usage captured since the pool opened,” said facility manager, Scott Linklater.

“The new timetable will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6am to 7pm, Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 7pm and weekends 12pm to 7pm.“

“The hydro/learn to swim pool will operate Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm and weekends 12pm to 7pm.”

In October 2011, the pool fl oor bulged and cracked under hydrostatic pressure which lifted the concrete

base and led to the commission of a structural engineering report to investigate the incident.

“There is a report underway into the hydrostatic failure and until complete we’re not going to know what and how it went wrong,” said Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust chairman, Gordon Lambeth.

Dargaville’s Kauri Coast Community pool is set to open labour weekend for the upcoming season with a reduction in opening times

A proud history to a bright future — forestry in the KaiparaThe impact in real terms is staggering.

Forestry is the third-largest contributor to the local economy, almost as important to the growth and prosperity of the North as agriculture itself. Over two and a half thousand people owe their jobs to forestry, and forest owners are some of the most passionate advocates of sustainability, stewarding their land for future generations.

It’s no wonder, when the full scale of the world’s demand for timber is taken into account. Almost fi ve percent of the nation’s GDP comes from the export of forestry products, and this equates to literally billions of dollars. The industry has come a long way since pioneering times, and modern forestry utilises heavy machinery and high technology to harvest logs, along with a skilled workforce putting in long hours in

It’s the ‘hidden’ industry which drives our regional economy — a resource which we’re acclaimed for our acumen in managing and maximising around the world. But forestry in the Kaipara, and indeed all of Northland, is an industry which has very little visible impact on the average person, who may only note the laden logging trucks traversing our roads day by day

sometimes challenging conditions.Forestry built the Kaipara in a very

real sense — early settlers to these shores were amazed by the immense kauri trees which grew all around the Kaipara harbour, and took little time to establish logging camps, turning these forest giants into new homes, buildings and ships.

Shipping was the major use for timber in Europe at the time, for this was the age of sail, and a nation’s seapower relied on a steady supply of good timber. Dargaville and Te Kopuru became centres for kauri milling, and settlers endured a hard life in the bush work camps to bring rafts of logs down to the sea. A thriving

shipbuilding trade grew up in tandem with the forestry exploits of our founders, and for a time the fastest ships on the water came from the Kaipara.

Nowadays native trees are protected by covenant of law, and the echoes of that pioneering past are preserved in such establishments as Matakohe’s Kauri Museum, along with relics and tools from those times. Many — such as long pit-saws and steam engines — are the forebears of today’s logging machinery, which has grown to stand at the forefront of technological innovation.

Modern logging begins with the right kind of tree, from seed to seedling and into maturity. In New Zealand the most cultivated kind of timber comes from a variation of the Monterey Pine, pinus radiata. It’s ideal because it grows quickly, and produces easily worked, high-

quality wood for the building industry. With forests taking on average a quarter of a century to mature, forest owners are careful custodians of their land, with a sustainable cycle of pines cultivated so that there are always mature trees ready to be harvested. Unlike any other building material, timber will never truly

for strength, peeled to make versatile plywood, or even ground up for paper. Careful sorting by grade ensures that each log fulfi ls its purpose, and the mills and ports are fed by a fl eet of logging trucks, putting in thousands of kilometres a day between them.

Forestry is a challenging but rewarding industry, and one of the linchpins of the local economy. Not only the export earnings of this sector count — there are also a host of local Kaipara businesses dedicated to supporting this vital trade. When logging professionals need tyres, lubrication, hydraulic repairs, or servicing for their chainsaws and equipment there is skilled help on hand from people right here in Dargaville and around the Kaipara.

It’s through their hard work and expertise that the forestry industry keeps its edge!

run out if our forests are managed in this way.

While there’s still plenty of work for the modern ‘lumberjack’ — now a skilled, safety conscious professional armed with a powerful chainsaw instead of an old-fashioned axe — many trees are now felled and stripped of their foliage by a single machine. A vicious-looking processor head (sometimes termed a Waratah, after a famous brand of such devices) can literally pluck the tree from its stump with a hinged chainsaw, then roll it between spiked wheels to remove excess branches. Attached to a digger arm and chassis, these machines

can harvest large areas in a short time.

In the steep back country, logs are often transported to more accessible ground by wire. A ‘yarder’ — a kind of

large, moveable tower equipped with powerful motors — hoists the logs from out of the forest on moving carriages, stacking them ready for transport. In fl atter areas, logs are carried by rugged ‘forwarders’, heavy-duty vehicles with chain-wrapped tyres. For the really heavy jobs (which abound in the silviculture

If you’re a Subaru owner, chances are you’re as passionate about the power and performance of your machine as the WRC drivers who have taken Subaru to countless podium fi nishes — and that means you demand the highest level of expertise when it comes to tuning and servicing your car.

In Northland, the people to see about your Subaru are SubLab Whangarei. From Legacy to Forester to WRX and more, Warren, Toni and the team have the cutting edge technology and the skill to keep your vehicle running factory-smooth, or to boost power and economy by tapping into the computer ‘brain’ of your machine.

It all comes back to having the right team for the job. Warren and Toni began working with Subarus over 14 years ago, growing their business and gaining the support of Subaru NZ. In 2000 they moved to their current Cameron St location, branching out to encompass a bigger workshop and new technology. Now they are the only offi cial Subaru parts and service lab in the north!

Service advisor Kris and auto technician Cade, along with Warren, have been granted the highest honour Subaru can bestow for technical acumen — the Subaru Technician Premium Award. They’re joined by Mike in the parts department, experienced technician

Affordable, proven performance from Subaru specialists

Jason, and young apprentice Gatlin to make up the ‘behind the scenes’ team at SubLab. Toni takes care of customers from the front desk, making sure that the busy SubLab workshop runs smoothly.

Subaru produce some advanced and highly technical machines, requiring the very latest in technology to service and tune. SubLab’s skilled team can increase the performance and fuel economy of your car or all wheel drive

by connecting directly to the computer which manages its engine — as well as taking care of those more prosaic but equally important auto care aspects such as suspension, injection, exhaust and a full suite of after-market accessories for customisation.

It’s also good to know that when you

Subaru is an automotive marque with pedigree — renowned for producing some of the world’s most successful rally cars, as well as some of New Zealand’s favourite road vehicles

buy Subaru parts for replacements or upgrades from SubLab Whangarei, you’ll drive away with a 12 month warranty — just another way this international brand stands behind their local professionals!

Right now SubLab have one of Subaru’s new and exciting XV crossover vehicles available to test drive — if you love power, performance and pedigree you must take the time to try this stunning new concept in motoring.

The XV is Subaru’s fi rst foray into the crossover market, a competitive niche indeed. But their offroad and all-wheel-drive credentials shine through, with the XV receiving praise from worldwide motoring critics for its handling and fuel economy. A serious contender for the likes of the CX-5 and the ASX, this is one crossover which is far more than just a high-riding version of a popular station wagon.

Drive SubLab’s demonstration model and see for yourself why this new offering may very well prove as popular as the well-loved Legacy wagon with families — especially in rural areas with that high ground clearance.

“ The XV is Subaru’s fi rst foray into the crossover market, a competitive niche indeed”

The 2012 Toyota Camry AtaraBook your test drive today

Refined developed & perfected through generations, since

1983 this is the ultimate iteration of one of

New Zealands favourite Sedan’s

Sharpening up a Kiwi favouriteexecutive and the school run and you begin to see that straight line speed is far less of a concern than providing a reliable, comfortable and stress free driving experience.

They’ve done so well with previous iterations that other car makers have tried unashamedly to emulate the Camry’s appeal — and steal some of its commanding market share. 2012’s model sets the bar even higher.

Outside, a sportier, more planted stance and crisp lines emphasize the work done by Toyota’s engineers to make the Camry slippery and aerodynamic, with the side effect of giving the car a more kinetic look. Twin chrome tipped exhausts, fog lights and aggressive headlamp clusters emphasize a new, more interesting style. It’s the same within — the cabin is subdued, but exudes an air of quality, with discreet

There are those who would say that the new 2012 Toyota Camry Atara has been a long time coming. Not in terms of the time it’s taken to supersede the previous model, but in terms of just how long the engineers, aerodynamicists and automotive tech-heads at the Japanese auto giant have been sharpening the edges of their top-selling mid-sized sedan

stitching, aluminium accents and clever storage spaces.

Space has been maximised for both luggage and passengers — the back seats boast an almost fl at fl oorpan, allowing ample legroom. The boot is cavernous, despite packing in a full sized spare wheel. And the driver’s seat proves a very comfortable place to be; just the ticket for commuter driving. Add in touch screen electronics and a powerful stereo and the miles will melt away.

The real surprise comes when the Camry hits the highway. With responsive handling, a sporty six-speed transmission shifting smoothly (and quickly) via shift paddles when it comes time to kick down and pass, and 135kw of power, the latest Camry has a fi zz of excitement about it which is missing from many mid-sized sedans in the same bracket. It’s an eminently practical tool which also happens to be spirited and engaging — the next evolution of a brand which has sold more than 15 million units and is still going strong!

The original Camry made its debut in 1983, and through seven successive generations Toyota have, surely been honing, fettling and perfecting the concept, with the same precision earlier Japanese engineers would have lavished on a traditional katana sword.

The challenge which Toyota have succeeded in conquering is far more diffi cult than simply blitzing the Nurburgring. The 2012 Camry is designed for that most demanding of automotive tasks — the daily commute. Add in sales rep fl eet service, company

Food in the sunshine

At Sugarbelles you’ll fi nd some of the best coffee ever to grace an espresso cup, plus delicious home made goodies AND some of the nation’s best pies. They’re made just round the corner at Real Town Pies, who back up their baking skills with some serious pizza credentials too — try their chicken delight for a hit of creamy avocado, lashings of cheese and ham all grilled to perfection with succulent chicken.

Travelling down to Ruawai, stop in at Ellecee café for an al fresco lunch, complemented by a creamy cappuccino or velvety smooth fl at white. When you get to Dargaville drop in to the Horseshoe café for a snack or a meal

— pick up some fresh sandwiches for a trip to the beach, or tuck into their famous all day breakfast. As you head out toward Whangarei you’ll discover the Top Shop there on your left — with seriously good home made pies piping hot from the oven, and a selection of sweet treats to entice you.

For a great night out this October, party at Malba’s in Whangarei, where great food meets hot music — it’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink or two and dance the night away.

One thing you must not miss is the Dargaville Club’s swinging 1960s party on the 12th — it’s a time warp back to a funkier era, with a top live band playing all the hits!

The band, made up of guitarists Kevin Jobbitt and Chris Davidson, Saxophonist Stu Stevenson, bass player Dave Ryan and drummer Ned Pukeroa will cover all of their all-time favourites, spanning the Beatles, Cliff Richard, the Shadows and more icons of the 60s. If you grew up with these classic bands it’s time to dust off your fl ares, dig out your platform shoes and party! And for those of you who only know the timeless music of the 60s from old LPs and the radio, it’s a chance to feel what it was really like to be there for Woodstock -without the mud and rain.

It’s the perfect season for a culinary road trip in the spring sunshine, and what better place to begin than Maungaturoto?

“It’s got great prospects, there’s probably around 20 musicians going,” says Joe.

He says that the set list will be informal and musicians will choose time slots they want to perform in on the weekend with a total of 17 hours live music over the two days.

“Musicians will turn up on an adhoc basis, and you get a group together and perform on the day.”

Jazz originated in the south of the United States and owner, Donice Hall-Morris, originally from Texas says, “It’s going to take me right back to New Orleans”

It begins on Saturday at 11am-11pm and

Seventeen hours of jazz

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church will be hosting a fundraising event with a twist on Sunday, October 14 with a variety concert at the Lighthouse Function Centre at Harding Park, Dargaville.

“We wanted to do something a little different to raise funds — we hope people will enjoy it. It’s also an opportunity for people to show off what they can do,” says co-organiser, Pat Reed.

The audience will be entertained with a variety of 10-minute performances over two hours including solo singers, duets and groups, as well as highland dancers, ballet dancers and Circus Kumarani.

The show will run from 2pm to 4.15pm with afternoon tea provided by the church parish.

“There will be a real variety of music styles, from classical to contemporary as well as comical songs and country and western — something for the whole family. I think children will especially enjoy it as many of the performers are young.”

Tickets are $15 adult, $5 child and $25 family, available from Gloria’s Flowers and Gifts, Walden’s Shoes and Empire Luncheonette.

For more information contact Shirley Geraghty Ph 09 4398309 or Pat Reed Ph 027 5115860.

Joe Carbery and the Swingtets will perform at the jazz party in the weekend: Art Cummins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Joe Carbery on alto saxophone and vocals, Julian Russell on piano, Marty Cullen on bass and Don Hales on drums

Aratapu Tavern is set to hold a jazz party on the weekend, October 6-7, with dozens of musicians, including Joe Carbery and the Swingtets featuring vocalist Carol Power

More than 40 artists feature in the Mangawhai Art Trail over Labour Weekend with 14 venues beginning at Studio 50 in the village and ending at Jeanette Vickers art studio at Mangawhai Heads.

“It’s a great weekend and the last arts trail we did, around Easter, we had around 400 people attend and I sold out of my abstract photographs,” says Jeanette.

Included in the trail is Alene Featherstone who recently won fi rst prize for the painting and drawing category at Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts awards.

It will be showcased in her studio along with a variety of paintings, drawings and pastel works including large drawings of pioneers depicting old bush themes.

“The arts trails keep getting better

and better as they go on” says Alene.

Secretary of the Dargaville Arts Association, Pauline Gough, will also showcase her work in the foyer of the new Mangawhai Museum along with 30 other artists.

“It will be my second time on the arts trail – I exhibited at Easter and I found the Mangawhai Arts Association to be a really nice bunch of people to work with.”

All 14 venues will be open 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday and Jeanette suggests that a good place to begin is at the museum.

Maps can be collected at the Mangawhai Information Centre or any of the venues marked with pink fl ags.
