The 50th Anniversary YearIn advance of the anniversary year, the Executive of the AJBCC and JABCC decided that the celebrations should be held in both countries and throughout the year rather than simply concentrating on the annual conference.

The year was launched at a JABCC-AJBCC jointly hosted 50th Anniversary Reception on Thursday 29th March, 2012 in Tokyo. The Guests of Honour Mr Katsuya Okada, Deputy Prime Minister of Japan and Mr Yukio Edano, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry addressed the Reception. Earlier in the afternoon, Mr Koichiro Gemba, Foreign Minister of Japan, briefly addressed a meeting of the two Executive Committees.

The presence of three such senior Ministers recognised the strength of the bilateral relationship at its many dimensions – political, security, commercial, scientific, cultural and people-to-people. It also acknowledged the good standing of the JABCC and AJBCC and the respect warranted to Dr Akio Mimura AC, Chairman of the JABCC.

In Japan, the major activity was the conduct of the 50th Anniversary Essay Contest on the topic “Revitalising the Australia-Japan Partnership in a Changing World”. This attracted 98 entries from Japan and overseas. The Awards Panel was chaired by Dr Akito Arima, Chancellor, Musashi Gakuen and a former Minister of Education and its Deputy Chair was Professor Masami Sekine, Keio University. There were two substantial cash and return airfares and accommodation prizes awarded and also two supplementary prizes. H.E. Mr Bruce Miller, Australia’s Ambassador to Japan, also sponsored a prize. An award ceremony was held on Monday 8th October as part of the 50th Anniversary Australia Japan Joint Business Conference.

In Australia, the AJBCC was delighted to co-host events with the Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry Sydney and the Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry Melbourne.

In Sydney, the two bodies organised a Reception that followed the AJBCC’s Annual General Meet-ing. Attended by 66 people, the Reception also became the opportunity for the Australian launch by Sir Rod Eddington AO, President of the AJBCC, of the Focus Publishing’s book “Australia-Japan: Partners in regional commerce and engagement”.

In Melbourne, the AJBCC joined as a co host of the Annual Spring Gala Dinner of the JCCI Melbourne and two Australia-Japan Societies in Victoria. Sir Rod had been invited to be the Guest Speaker of the occasion which had over two hundred attendees and he spoke on the history and the dynamism of the relationship.
