Dear Parents and Guardians
The Interschool Swimming Carnival was a huge
and successful event last Tuesday. House spirit
was abundant and attendance rates high. The
day was a credit to the organisers lead by Kate
Barfoot, Laura Herrington and the VET
Community Sport students. Congratulations to
all staff and students for contributing to the
colour, fun and success of this day.
School Council
The election process for School Council has been
completed. The college received three
nominations for three vacant positions in the
Parent Category. It is therefore my pleasure to
congratulate Warwick Lancashire, Kim Lipari
and Les Johnson as duly elected to School
Council. The college also received two
nominations for two vacant positions in the
DEECD Category. Congratulations to Kate
Barfoot and Keith Perry on their election to
School Council. We should also congratulate
Year 12 student, Joshua Lorimer who takes up a
position in the Community Category as a result
of his appointment as President of the SRC.

In 2014, Kambrya College will again be offering students at all year levels the opportunity to
participate in a range of academic competitions across the areas of English, Mathematics and
Science.
ICAS (International Competition and Assessment for Schools) Competitions are run by the
University of New South Wales and include the subjects Science, Writing, Spelling, English and
Mathematics. Each of the competition papers differs in format, and we have sample papers
which students can look at in the Numeracy Centre. Students in each year level sit a different
paper.
The AMC (Australian Mathematics Competition) is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust.
This competition consists of 25 multiple choice questions, and 5 short answer questions. Many of
the questions are suited to the student’s year level, with some harder ones thrown in as an extra
challenge. Students are scored against the same year level across the entire country.
For all competitions, awards are given to the top students in each year level across the country.
In 2013, our students were awarded with five ‘Distinction’ awards which placed them in the top
10% of their year level across Australia. All students who compete will receive a certificate of
participation.
If your child is interested in entering any of the above competitions, they should let their
English, Maths or Science teacher know. Permission forms will only be sent home to students
who register interest later this term. Each competition will cost approx. $8 to enter, with ICAS
Writing being slighter higher at approx. $15.
If you have any questions about any of these competitions please contact me at the college

Compass News
The Compass Parent Portal In recent weeks all parents will have received a letter about Compass School Manager.
Compass is a new tool being used by the College, primarily to increase the means of
communication between school staff and you at home. To access Compass, click on the Compass
School Manage logo on the Kambrya College website (http://www.kambryacollege.com).
One of the biggest advantages to the use of Compass is that we can deliver news and
information to you in real time. For example, we are able to upload end of semester reports
directly to your Compass account, removing the need to rely on ‘snail mail’ to deliver such
important documentation. Of course, if you prefer to receive communication from the school in
alternative forms, please just let us know and we accommodate this where practical.
A wide range of information is available to you right now, including:
A report of your child’s attendance including any unapproved absences
Your child’s end of semester report for Semester 2, 2013
Your child’s timetable including any special events which have been organised
Your child’s Chronicle, a summary of alerts which teacher post about academic
performance, behaviour, attitude and other general observations
A college news feed with updates about events and activities at the college
Compass can also be used to assist you in communicating with the school. It is currently
possible for you to:
Advise the school of an upcoming (or past) absence, instead of writing a note or phoning
the office
Give permission and pay for an upcoming excursion or incursion (permission forms can
also be printed and sent in to the school, and permission forms will still be given to stu-
dents by teachers)
Email any of your child’s teachers
If you have not yet logged on to Compass, I urge you to do so and have a look at the information
which is available to you. Over the coming year additional features will be made available
including booking for Parent-Teacher Conferences, subject selections, payment of fees as well as
access to learning tasks and teacher lesson plans.
In future newsletters, guides to assist you with the above tasks will be published. Compass is a
fairly robust system however and initial feedback from our parent community has been very
positive. If you have any questions about how to use Compass or any of the information which is
contained on your child’s profile page, please email our Compass Support team
([email protected]). If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it
via the Compass home page, accessible via a link on the College website.

Insurance and Ambulance Cover
Parents and Guardians need to be aware that neither the Education Department nor
Kambrya College have insurance cover for accident, ambulance or personal belongings.
Parents and Guardians who do not have insurance cover are responsible for paying for any
medical treatment that may be required including the cost of ambulance and related
transport costs. Students are also urged to not bring valuables to school as the College has no
capacity to pay for any loss or damage to personal property. Parents and guardians can
purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers.

Tuesday February 25th saw Kambrya’s whole
school swimming carnival take place. Weather
conditions were almost perfect, although there
was a sizeable downwind for race competitors!
While participation rates started off slow on the
day, with less than usual competing in the 50m
freestyle events, students got into the spirit of
competition to represent their Sub School. Mirrim
was out to a strong start, and eventually were too
good to catch, knocking Warin off the podium
and taking out the title for the first time in Mr
Moffett’s reign as Sub School leader.
House point totals for the day were:
1st: Mirrim 572
2nd: Bulen Bulen 464
3rd: Warin 366
4th: Gwonawa 276
The age champions and overall champions for
the carnival were:
13yrs: Hannah Lorimer & Luke Engler
14yrs: Hailey Cook & Matthew Kent
15yrs: Sharna Emanuelli & Jim Oshannessy
16yrs: Ebony Hunter & Dhesan Chetty
Senior: Haley Close & Joshua Lorimer
Overall: Hailey Cook & Matthew Kent
We would like to extend a huge thankyou to all
staff who assisted in the running of the event,
ensuring such as successful day.
Congratulations also go to Mr Sawers and the
VET Sport and
Recreation students for the fantastic organisation
of the day and doing a great job in running the
event. Well done to all competitors and to Mirrim!
