Is standardisation important for OH&S?
Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC“Member States shall take the appropriate measures to enable the social partners to have an influence at national level on the process of preparing and monitoring the harmonised standards”
Conclusion: Member states are responsible for supporting the access of the social partners to the standardisation process at national level

Personal Protective Equipment Directive (89/686/EEC)
“Member States shall ensure that by 30 June 1991 appropriate steps are taken to enable both sides of industry to have an influence at national level on the process of formulating the harmonized standards and keeping them under review.”
Conclusion: Standardisation is an important instrument of prevention supporting the European directives

Accidents with slicing machines in Germany
1990: 4,840 cutting accidents occurred in Germany with slicing machines.
14% of the accidents happened during cleaning of the machine.
Minor technical changes in DIN EN 1974 (e.g. protector ring next to circular cutting blade).
2000: reduction of accidents > 50%
