What?ABC is the association to benefit children

ABC has two locations available for us to work with: Cassidy’s Place and Graham’s School

ABC focuses on helping children in need ranging from infants to 5-year-olds

MissionThe Association to Benefit Children (ABC) was

created to amplify the voices of defenseless children by combating the debilitating effects of poverty and championing the right of every child to a joyful and nurturing childhood

ABC creates model programs that are

StatisticsThe number of children in city shelters has grown by

60% in recent years

50% of all children in shelters are under age 6

As of 2011 25% of children in Manhattan live below the federal poverty line

As of 2011 10.6% of children receive public assistance in Manhattan

10.8% of more than 11,000 families who entered the shelter system in the fiscal year of 2011 were from Manhattan

Statistics (continued)Nearly 31.3% of children under the age of 5 in New

York city as of 2011 indicated reports of child abuse and neglect

In 2010 5.3% of mothers in Manhattan received late or no prenatal care

From 2009-2011 there were 3.9 deaths per 1000 live births in Manhattan

2011-2012 49.2% of elementary and middle school children enrolled in Manhattan public schools met reading standards and 61.9% met math standards

How does ABC help?Sets up variety of programs to nurture and create a

healthy childhood experience for these children

ABC sets up programs for infants and toddlers and adjusts their curriculum accordingly

Different locations focus on different aspects of childhood for example: Cassidy’s Place focuses on children from ages three to five who live poverty and may be suffering from serious medical conditions and have special needs, The Graham school provides enriched education programming for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers

How can we help?In infant programs, volunteers may be need to

hold, feed, and sing to the children

In toddler and preschool classrooms, volunteers may be asked to help with storytelling, reading, painting, arts and crafts, and supervising the children as they enjoy free play in one ABC’s outdoor playgrounds
