Hamilton Island Hamilton Island is one of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia, close to the Great Barrier Reef. Most of the car-free island is covered in bushland, and the coast is fringed by coral reefs. Tours offer up-close sightings of koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburras. Trails lead up to Passage Peak in the east, with views of the surrounding islands. It is positioned approximately 887 kilometres (551 mi) north of Brisbane and 512 kilometres (318 mi) south of Cairns. It is also the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with its own commercial airport, with short direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. Like most in the Whitsunday group, Hamilton Island was formed as sea levels rose which created numerous drowned mountains that are situated close to the east coast of Queensland. At the 2011 Australian Census, the island recorded a population of 1,208 people. Hamilton Island is a popular tourist destination all year round. In late August, the island plays host to its annual Hamilton Island Race Week yachting festival, in which more than 250 yachts from across Australia and New Zealand gather for a week of races around the Whitsunday Islands. This is only one of many events hosted on the island. Hamilton Island has won multiple awards including the Australian Traveller 'Most Desirable Island Escape' Award in 2015.

Meet a quokka

The happiest animal on Earth... Rottnest Island is known globally as the home of the cutest and most photogenic animal in the world, the quokka. Apart from a small colony on the mainland, they are found nowhere else on Earth. These tiny animals, related to wallabies, are found in abundance on the island, and have no fear of humans so will often come right up to visitors. The island was even named after these little animals by the first Dutch explorers to the region. Rottnest Island is also home to one of the world's most critically endangered mammals, Gilbert’s potoroo, which have been introduced to the island to help revive the species. Go whale watching Rottnest Island is a perfect location to see humpback and southern right whales as they make their annual migration along Western Australia's coastline. In April about 35,000 whales travel north from the Antarctic to feeding and birthing grounds in the Indian Ocean. From late August to November, on their return journey with newborn calves, they spend significant time around Rottnest Island's protected waters, before once more heading south. One of the best places to view the whales is from the newly constructed West End Boardwalk, which is accessible by bike or the Island Explorer bus.

So whether you’re after the thrill of seemingly endless, smooth open beaches, or you prefer the challenge of tracking overland and inland, you can test your 4WD skills as little or as much as you like.

Tips for 4WDing on Moreton Island Sand! 1. Grab a vehicle permit – permits are

mandatory on Moreton Island 4WDing. 2. Normal road rules apply on all Moreton

island tracks and beaches – max. 60 km/h. 3. The speed limit is reduced to 30 km/h in

front of the Micat, the Wrecks campground, Ben-Ewa campground and Bulwer.

4. Most beaches have washouts caused by creeks cutting across the beach. Slow right down to cross them.

5. All roads are unsealed, rough, rutted, sandy and narrow and not suitable for high speeds. Slow down and be prepared to give

way to oncoming traffic. 6. Pass on the left and indicate to let other drivers know your intentions, show etiquette and give a

wave. 7. Keep left of oncoming vehicles at all times. 8. Wear seatbelts at all times. 9. For safety, it is best to avoid driving at night. 10. Please watch for children playing on the beach. They can’t hear your vehicle due to surf and

wind.
